Expansive football, talented technical magicians and a manager who had taken us to things we could not have dreamed of - it all looked so exciting ahead of the new campaign. There were iconic wins over Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, but despite champaign football being on show once more, the gulf in Premier League quality cost us relegation. It's here Baggies! Part 2 of Albion's exciting automatic promotion back to the Premier League. After signing Paul ‘Robbo' Robinson in October to strengthen Albion's defence, Megson dipped into the transfer market once more recruiting Mark Kinsella and Geoff Horsfield to bolster an already strong squad. Those signings along with a young “One of our own” Lloyd Dyer proved pivotal to push the Baggies through the Promotion door in comfortable fashion in the end as Megson's men never dropped out of the top two for the rest of the campaign. Back in the top flight for the first time since 1986, Albion were proud as punch to be pitting their whits against the big boys once more and showed it with superb victories at Manchester City and West Ham United. Gary Megson's Baggies were back in the top flight after 16 years of being in the wilderness following spells in the second and third tier of English football. After cutting an 11 point gap over our Black Country rivals Wolves. Albion's never-say-die attitude and incredible team spirit took them over the line to Premiership glory. Selling one of our star strikers, the Battle at Bramall Lane, missing more penalties than we had scored along with going all the way to the FA Cup Quarter-Final. This season had it all from drama to ecstasy with iconic moments and memories never to be forgotten. Gary Megson's first full season in charge at the Hawthorns was like being on a dream boat as we showed our credentials amongst the elite team's in the First Division. A season that began full of fresh optimism following the dismissal of Denis Smith and the appointment of Ex-Premier League Manager Brian Little who came with an excellent reputation. Yet challenges on the pitch and off the pitch accumulated with poor results cost Little his job meaning Albion were searching for their second manager in less than 12 months. A new Chairman in Paul Thompson and a new manager in Gary Megson helped revitalise a slippery slope for the Baggies as they pulled out all the stops to survive the dreaded trap door of Division 2 Football on the final day. Denis Smith's first full season in charge started like a house on fire as we won three out of our first four league games. Our new Ginger Ninja showed his full potential bagging over 30 goals and nearly earning himself a Sports Car as we dipped in and out of the play-off positions. There was also a young Italian bursting on the scene to light up the Hawthorns with his magic tricks. Hear how my radio dream came true for a day, my first away game in a while with much more packed into another enthralling campaign supporting my beloved Baggies.
After a flying start that saw us well in contention for promotion. Manager Ray Hartford shocked all Albion fans by quitting the club. The arrival of new manager Denis Smith didn't go to plan, but we finished the season strongly in preparation for the next campaign. A bronx hat, another league double over Wolves and a player sponsor were all part of this personal league season story. Success in the Isle Of Man to thumping wins over Norwich, QPR and Southend - oh and a Blues double! While a new striker was in Town to give Taylor and Hunt some much needed competition. Another season packed full of fun and Baggies memories as Ray Harford entered B71 following the sacking of manager Alan Buckley to bring exciting times back to the Hawthorns.
A season full of up's and down's, but ending the campaign on a high note. In his full first season in charge, Buckley steered Albion to a comfortable mid-table place after some harrowing bumps along the way. Yet there was still some iconic moments, with Super Bob Taylor and a cup run which almost took us to Wembley. Sit back and re-live it as I also give Sneekes a little pep talk of my own, as Albion finished the highest I had ever seen them do so to date.
No fairytale ending for this one, but still some great moments to enjoy in a season we finished strongly. Buckley's Baggies were transformed following the sacking of Keith Burkinshaw turning the Hawthorns into a fortress. Defeating two of the three newly relegated teams from the Premier League, before beating Wolves again to thumping play-off chasing Tranmere. Sit back and enjoy another Albion campaign, as we improved on the season before.
After Ossie Ardiles had jumped ship to move to Spurs, following that epic 1992/93 promotion winning campaign, I feared the worst, and it almost happened! But, thanks to a last day win at Portsmouth, we would survive and ensure First Division football would be back at the Shrine again next season. There was a Black Country double over our local rivals Wolves. Enjoy the audio commentary of those ones! Being Mascot at the New Den and living my dream of playing on the hallowed turf. All this and more packed into yet another roller coaster ride of supporting my beloved Baggies.
