Was 1985 English football's darkest year? There could be a number of nominations for this much coveted title but 1985 contained the tragedies of Heysel Stadium and the Bradford City fire. Weeks before these events the sixth round FA Cup replay between Luton Town and Millwall degenerated into a shocking riot. The average attendance at a Division One match in 1972 had been over 30,000. By 1985 that had slumped to just 18,374. No British team had qualified for the Euros in France in 1984 so no British television channel bothered to cover it, so low was the interest in the game. Football in 1985 said the Sunday Times was a slum sport played in slum stadiums and increasingly watched by slum people. Jim White, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes discuss whether or not that withering verdict was justified. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome to The Football Weekend Classics series, where we'll be sharing some of the best moments from the podcast all summer long. First up: Kasey Keller's Millwall stories. The goalkeeper from Olympia, Washington played for the U.S. Men's National Team at four World Cups, but he was also one of the first Americans to really cut it in Europe. His first move after college in 1992 was to head out to South London to play in The Den. A Scottish professor tried to explain to him the gravity of this development before he went, but now, after 175 appearances — and a regular series of pitch invasions — Keller knows better than most the ferocious intensity of Millwall's world. It all came to a head when they were closing the famous old stadium and moving to The New Den, when fans rushed the field and stripped the players — including Keller — of everything they had on. In the end, he could only escape the pitch by running at full pelt and kicking somebody in the chest when they jumped into his path. For the full interview with Kasey, check the original podcast. The love of cinema, Peter's sonorous baritone, Sarah's hatred of hot weather, the case for changing the way we adopt in the UK and does Peter ever go to watch Millwall and throw lager about? He does not. And those are just the topics and questions posed by listeners.Peter and Sarah also ask why we now embrace organisations that were once proscribed as terrorists? And in light of Coldplay being the most boring band on earth (scientific fact), why can't we make decent rock stars anymore. This week, we're delighted to welcome Millwall's Managing Director Mark Fairbrother to the show. This is a football club that many people both in and out of football have a preconceived idea about, built around historical associations with hooliganism and social unrest. These perceptions are rooted in media portrayal, cultural symbolism and sociopolitical factors rather than the club's present day values. So, what does the Millwall of today represent and stand for? Off the back of a hugely successful Championship campaign which saw the club fighting for a play-off spot on the last day of the season, eventually finishing 8th, Mark is building both a club that can push the boundaries of its modest budgets (comparative to their competitors) and act as a pillar of the community. Football clubs are more influential than ever to the people that support them and localities they serve; this is a club going a step further. We're very excited to bring you this; an insight into one of England's most notable clubs intent on rooting itself high up the football pyramid. On today's show we discuss: The Millwall Identity: What makes Millwall unique and why does the club's reputation precede it? How does the club lean into its history without being constrained by outdated stereotypes? What does “no one likes us, we don't care” mean to the leadership today? Is it a challenge or a strategic asset? Can a club change how it's seen without losing its soul? Running a Championship Club: How do you balance short-term results with long-term stability in a volatile league? What are the day-to-day commercial realities of Championship football? How does Millwall approach player trading and squad investment with limited resources? How do media rights and the recent Sky deal affect clubs like Millwall? Is the EFL sustainable as a whole or are financial disparities becoming too great? Football Business vs. Football Culture What are the pressures of running a club where emotion runs high, but margins are tight? How do you manage fan expectations while still being fiscally responsible? Is the modern football club more like a community anchor or a business enterprise and what happens when those two pull in different directions? What's the biggest misconception fans have about how football clubs are run? Millwall's Future What does success look like for Millwall? Is it promotion, survival, or something else? How is the club investing in infrastructure, community, and culture to grow sustainably? What are Millwall's ambitions on and off the pitch in the next five years? Can the club compete with parachute-funded rivals while staying true to its values? What role does leadership at club level play in shaping the future of the Championship? David Forde is with us this week. For a bloke who has quit playing football countless times Forde managed to carve out a great career and cement himself as a Millwall legend. Forde has suffered with performance anxiety for large parts of his career and often found himself skipping training to travel to India to practice meditation to help him battle this and find a new form of focus. After getting a 2 week fine while playing in the Welsh league Forde was ready to quit football and move back to Ireland but in a very quick U-turn he got a move to West Ham and was training with his hero David James. In a career spanning across 20 years Forde has had his fair share of encounters with mavericks including Martin Allen, Di Canio & Stephen Bywater. While at Millwall he saw everything a Millwall legend would have; promotions, relegations, fights, smoking cigars at Wembley after winning in the play-offs and of course the elbow Jermaine Beckford. Zero points and eight conceded - that's probably not the Easter we all had in mind. Hot off the heels of a 1-3 defeat at Millwall, which itself came off pretty sharply after a 3-5 at home to Portsmouth, the On The Ball podcast dissects Norwich City's terrible slump in form. Host Ryan Livermore, Craig Draycott and Steve Sanders chat youth v experience, set-piece woes, bad starts, and crosses, and what this all might mean for next season's chances. Plus, rolling through who to keep and who to shift for next season, the players and managers who never represented Norwich City but should have, and adding items to the club shop.
