The Chumash Rebellion Welcome to a holiday episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast, where we dive into the myths and truths surrounding the most propagandized narratives of American history. Yes, Thanksgiving is upon us—a time that can range from warm gatherings with loved ones to fiery debates with relatives reveling in the "glorious" Trump victory over "that communist Kamala Harris." But as we carve the turkey, we often forget—or perhaps never truly knew—the histories that make up this holiday and its complex intersections with the lives of Native Americans. Tonight, we take a sharp detour from the saccharine tales of "Pilgrims and Indians" with our esteemed guest, historian Joe Payne, who will unpack the story of the Chumash Rebellion of 1824. It was a powerful and successful uprising against the oppressive mission system in Alta California—a narrative systematically erased by colonialism's historical whitewashing. Prepare for revelations that will enrich—or weaponize—your Thanksgiving dinner debates. Joe Payne will illuminate the Chumash not as the "savages" that racist missionaries painted them to be, but as a sophisticated and resilient people forced into colonial servitude by Spanish Franciscans. Through their heroic uprising, they defied their oppressors and reclaimed their autonomy, even if only briefly. Tonight's episode promises an academic and gripping journey into this hidden history. Introduction: Horror Tropes and the Legacy of "Teens in the Woods" Welcome back to *THIS IS REVOLUTION* where we never apologize for our taste! At TIR, we reject the concept of “guilty pleasures.” Whether it's low-budget films, DIY music, or bootleg swap meet finds—we embrace it all. And if there's one genre that pulls us in, it's horror. Today, we're diving into perhaps the most enduring horror trope: the “teenagers camping in the woods” genre, a setup that begins with ordinary characters and quickly descends into terror and survival. This genre arguably gained its iconic standing with the *Friday the 13th* franchise, where a vengeful, silent figure haunts unsuspecting teens for their “sins” or simply for being there. What began with an act of vengeance in the original *Friday the 13th* became something far darker—a formula that ultimately evolved into a chilling commentary on innocence, power, and punishment. With sequels piling up, Jason Voorhees' motive shifts from vengeance to something closer to a ritualistic bloodlust, a reflection of the franchise's own bloodthirsty popularity. But what do these stories reveal about our society's anxieties and about the "rules" that horror fans know all too well? Films like *The Cabin in the Woods* take this trope further, using it as a meta-commentary on the genre itself—introducing archetypal characters and scenarios as intentionally manipulated constructs, while weaving in a dark critique on our endless hunger for violence as entertainment. Today, we're taking a closer look at these “teen slasher” tropes and what makes this genre so unforgettable. Let's dissect the horror, the satire, and the complex politics of punishment and voyeurism that keep audiences coming back for more. This exploration into horror classics and their archetypal characters isn't just about scares—it's about understanding our collective psyche. The “teens in the woods” trope reveals as much about our cultural anxieties and contradictions as it does about our cinematic tastes. FIND REVOL PRESS BOOKS HERE: https://www.revolpress.com/ In this episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION podcast, we delve into the intricate and often contradictory relationship between heavy metal and the political left. For decades, heavy metal has been both celebrated for its rebellious ethos and criticized for tolerating reactionary practices, from casual misogyny to far-right ideologies. Yet, as David Burke's compendium from Revol Press, What's Left of Metal, argues, there exists within metal a powerful current of leftist social critique, challenging capitalist systems, authoritarian structures, and the commodification of culture. Metal, Burke and his contributors assert, is more than an outlet for rebellion; it is a space where leftist politics and radical critiques of power can thrive. As the compendium notes, “metal is a space where the contradictions of modern life—alienation, repression, and exploitation—are confronted head-on, yet it is also a culture that has often been co-opted, commodified, and neutralized by the very systems it seeks to challenge.” (What's Left of Metal). This duality raises important questions: how does metal retain its radical potential while being recuperated into mainstream culture? Is there a leftist core to metal's ethos of resistance, or is the genre too compromised by its reactionary tendencies? And as metal becomes more culturally legitimate in the Global North, what's truly left of metal's subversive edge? Our conversation today with David Burke will explore these questions, focusing on the intersection of metal and leftist politics, the genre's potential to contribute to revolutionary praxis, and how metal's critique of society can be weaponized for the left in the contemporary moment of permanent crisis. Burke's collection challenges us to think critically about the role of extreme music in leftist organizing and cultural production, as well as how left commentators, metal musicians, and scholars can engage more deeply with metal's revolutionary potential. LISTEN TO CHAMPAGNE SHARKS HERE: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/champagne-sharks/id1242690393 Welcome to another episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast, where we explore the deeper political and social dynamics behind current events. Today, we're diving into the recent indictment of once-revered hip hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs on federal racketeering charges. Combs, once celebrated for his entrepreneurial prowess and impact on hip hop culture, is now facing serious accusations of running an elaborate criminal enterprise centered on human trafficking, abuse, and sexual exploitation. The charges against Combs are shocking but reflect the darker realities lurking behind the glamor of the entertainment industry. As outlined by the justice.gov indictment, Combs is accused of forcing women into "Freak Offs"—elaborate sex performances orchestrated through coercion, violence, and manipulation. He allegedly used narcotics, financial dependency, and physical threats to control his victims, echoing the practices of global human trafficking networks. This brings to mind a broader and more disturbing reality: are we confronting this issue with the seriousness it demands, or are we only shocked when such allegations involve a high-profile celebrity? While the focus is on Combs now, we must also recognize that these charges are not isolated to one individual. The exploitation of women and their commodification through violence, coercion, and control is a pervasive and deeply entrenched issue in capitalist society—one where power dynamics are exploited to maintain control and assert dominance. These behaviors are happening right now in some corners of the world and for years they've been glorified in the hip hop community. It's just pimping, and as the song says, it ain't easy. Is hip hop having a “mask off” moment? With the Combs and Young Thug trials, do these legal proceedings have a negative effect on the genre or the way it's perceived? Rap music, once thought to embody “realness” in the case of Young Thug, is being challenged on its authenticity. It's never really been fantasy escapism, but “the unreported news” of the inner city told by the people that lived it. In the case of Young Thug, is this all a lie now? Is it what people like Gerald Horne and Stanley Crouch have viewed? A minstrel show of underclass troupes? In the case of Combs, the pimp has been a glorified figure for some time in Black urban life. Isn't Puffy nothing more than a modern iteration of Max Julien in The Mack? Today, we will discuss the nature of these crimes, the structural realities that enable them, and what this case reveals about our collective attitudes toward abuse, celebrity culture, and power. Are we finally waking up to the harsh realities of human trafficking, or do we still turn a blind eye until a famous name is attached to it? Watch the trailer here: https://youtu.be/5ea23H8o3m0?si=ZqhE9xZnZtsLm3pQ Welcome to another episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast, where we go beyond the typical election season chatter to explore the deeper political landscapes shaping our world. As we approach the U.S. presidential election, much of the media will focus on poll numbers, political ads, and electoral horse races. In 2024, politics has become more akin to team sports, where tribal loyalties and spectacle often replace substantive policy debates. But instead of playing the same game, today we're turning our attention to Latin America, where political struggles reveal more about the urgent global fight for justice and democracy. Our guest today is Nando Villa, the producer of the documentary The Ecuadorian Candidate, which follows the candidacy of young left-wing economist Andrés Arauz as he runs for the presidency of Ecuador. Arauz faced a formidable opponent in Guillermo Lasso, a wealthy conservative banker. The documentary captures Arauz's efforts to unite fractured left movements and appeal to the Ecuadorian electorate in the hope of building a progressive future. This film goes beyond just one election—it highlights the broader struggles of the Latin American left in the face of neoliberal hegemony and the complex political terrain of the region. We'll dive deep into these themes and ask what lessons can be learned from Arauz's campaign for those fighting for progressive change around the world. Read Matthew's substack here: https://matthewvernonwhalan.substack.com/ Introduction On today's episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION podcast, we confront the stark realities of the U.S. carceral system, focusing on the brutal conditions inside Alabama's prisons. The U.S. is notorious for having the highest incarceration rate in the world, and Alabama stands out as a grim case study of what many scholars and activists have long called a form of modern slavery. The state's prison system is severely overcrowded, underfunded, and rife with violence, neglect, and systemic abuse. With prisoners subjected to inhumane living conditions, forced labor, and an indifferent legal system, Alabama's prisons highlight the broader contradictions of a capitalist society that profits off of punishment and exploitation rather than rehabilitation and justice. Our guest today, journalist Matthew Whalan, has dedicated his work to uncovering these harsh realities, particularly through his Substack article, "A Life in Alabama Prison", and a recent interview that has brought attention to the horrific living conditions behind bars. His reporting sheds light on the voices of those often silenced, emphasizing the daily indignities, brutality, and neglect that people incarcerated in Alabama face. Whalan's work helps us grasp not only the human cost of incarceration but also the structural forces that perpetuate it, including racial and economic inequality, capitalist exploitation, and political neglect. As we delve into this discussion, we must ask ourselves: what does the treatment of prisoners in Alabama reveal about the broader U.S. prison-industrial complex? How do these systems of punishment maintain and reinforce the racial and class hierarchies on which American capitalism is built? Whalan's work encourages us to move beyond liberal reforms and understand the carceral system as a fundamental pillar of capitalist exploitation—a system in which prisons function not as institutions of rehabilitation but as warehouses for surplus populations deemed disposable by the state. Introduction: The political landscape in the United States has shifted dramatically over the past few years. The ascension of Donald Trump, propelled by a wave of racial animus, faux populism, and a fierce rejection of identity politics, seemed to signal the end of the liberal racial identitarianism that flourished during the Obama years. However, the Democratic Party's recent announcement that Vice President Kamala Harris will be their nominee to face Trump in the upcoming election suggests that identity politics may still play a pivotal role in American politics. Kamala Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, has long embraced both sides of her heritage. Yet, her identity has been a focal point of political attacks, with Trump recently attempting to question her Blackness in a room full of Black reporters—a move that backfired, eliciting boos from the audience. As the Democratic Party once again leans on the "I'm With Her" slogan, reminiscent of Hillary Clinton's campaign, the question arises: Will Harris's identity galvanize the African American intelligentsia, particularly in a post-George Floyd America where the chattering class has been notably quiet? This episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast will delve into how the African American intelligentsia might react to a potential Kamala Harris presidency. Will they see her as a beacon of progress, despite her past role in the tough-on-crime policies of the 1990s, or will they reject her as another establishment figure out of touch with the needs of the Black community? Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. We appreciate each and everyone of you. If you have the means, and you feel so inclined, BECOME A PATRON! Read Ashley's work here: https://www.compactmag.com/.../assisted-dying-isnt-freedom/ https://unherd.com/.../assisted-dying-advocates-are.../ Welcome to today's episode of This Is Revolution, where we delve into the complex and often controversial topic of euthanasia. Known by terms such as "Death With Dignity" or "Medical Assistance in Dying" (MAID), euthanasia is increasingly presented as a humane option for those suffering from terminal illnesses or chronic conditions. But is it truly a compassionate choice, or does it mask a more troubling reality? Since Canada implemented the MAID program in 2016, there have been 44,958 deaths under the program, with 2022 alone accounting for 4% of all deaths in the country—a 31% increase from the previous year. This rise in MAID-related deaths has saved millions in healthcare costs, raising ethical questions about the role of euthanasia in society. Does it offer a dignified end for those who can no longer contribute economically, or is it a method of disposing of those deemed unproductive, such as the elderly and those with addiction issues? The expansion of MAID to individuals with mental illness and even "mature minors" has sparked global debate. Critics warn of a slippery slope where euthanasia might be seen as a solution for those facing not only illness but also poverty and other social injustices. Our guest today, Professor Ashley Frawley, has written extensively on the subject. She highlights how some academic papers argue that MAID serves as "harm-reduction" in an unjust world with little chance of improvement, suggesting that allowing euthanasia in such cases might prevent further suffering. A significant portion of the population seems to agree, with one-third of Canadians supporting MAID for individuals whose sole affliction is poverty. Is this a sign of a compassionate society, or are we edging toward a dystopian reality where economic productivity defines one's right to life? To explore these pressing questions, we are joined by Professor Ashley Frawley, who will help us navigate the ethical, social, and political implications of euthanasia. Please welcome Professor Ashley Frawley. Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. We appreciate each and everyone of you. After running through some highlights of the Right's response to Trump's massive debt to New York, Jason Myles joins, diving right into his recent article “Same as it Ever Was: The Illusion of American Political Discourse In Media,” on the faux-evolution of US political discourse alongside immaterial policy changes. Jason tackles the progression of US immigration policy from the progressive facade of the Obama Administration, through the backlash to Trump's objectionable and visibly brutal border policy, up to Biden's recent pivot to completely embrace the GOP and Trump's far-right framing of the border crisis, before he, Sam, and Emma parse through parallels with the rhetoric around crime and the Defund movement. Sam and Emma then expand on the ongoing GOP mutiny against Speaker Mike Johnson, parse through the dramatic break between Candace Owens and the Daily Wire, and bask in the complete unraveling of the GOP's Biden inquiry, with some help from Russian collusion. Happy Hump Day! Emma speaks with Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), to discuss the recent victories pro-public education candidates have had over right wing candidates in the most recent school board races. Then, Emma speaks with AMQuickie co-writer Jacob Silverman to discuss his recent piece in The Nation on Sam Altman's mysterious departure from OpenAI. And THEN, she's joined by Jason Myles, co-host of the This Is Revolution podcast, to discuss his recent mini-book release of I Was A Teenage Anarchist. First, Emma runs through updates on the death toll in Gaza climbing over 14k, Israel's striking of Humanitarian locations provided by the US, Ro Khana's call for a ceasefire, the growing anti-Palestinian Red Scare in Hollywood, a former Obama Advisor's harassment of a halal street vendor, organizing for reproductive rights, Wisconsin's Supreme Court, labor action among California educators, and a potential Andrew Cuomo mayoral run, before parsing through the recent announcement of a four-day PAUSE in Israel's bombardment of Gaza, and the Biden Administration's internal fear of honest journalism about the war. Randi Weingarten then joins, as she quickly runs through the astounding failure of the attempted right-wing takeover of local school boards, with candidates backed by Mom's for Liberty and the 1776 Project losing 70% of their races, including losing 8/10 in regions where they had seen previous victory, and how these results show what actual parental rights look like. Jacob Silverman then joins, diving right into OpenAI – the largest AI startup in Silicon Valley – Sam Altman – the CEO of said $80 billion startup – and this weekend's attempted removal of Altman by the board. Silverman walks through Altman's powerful role among Silicon Valley's elites, particularly among the cash cows, also touching on OpenAI's internal conflict between its cautious non-profit elements and its bullish members with grandiose visions, and how the mass funding required in this industry forces the integration of AI, regardless of its quality or moral clarity. After walking through the details of OpenAI's board's sudden firing of Altman, and the equally sudden (and successful) revolt against that decision, Silverman touches on the state of the AI tech bubble (particularly in comparison to the Crypto bubble), before briefly wrapping up with the guilty plea of Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao. Jason Myles helps round out the episode as he and Emma walk through the evolution of his mini-book “I Was A Teenage Anarchist,” and the parallels he sees in the fight between deconstruction and authenticity in the hardcore punk scene of the 1990s and 2000s, and the ongoing internal conflicts of the US' embryonic left. Myles touches on the additional parallels for the branding of both punk and leftism, before expanding on the need for a solid material and power analysis in pushing for actual material change – particularly within the context of social versus political and legislative progress. And in the Fun Half, Emma and the MR Crew react to the disgraceful behavior of Stuart Seldowitz, a former State Department staffer caught on video making racist, Islamophobic comments towards one halal cart vendor repeatedly on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. They also take a look at Iraqi-Israeli historian Avi Shlaim's remarks about the establishment of the Israeli state in the late 40's, and how the Zionist project precipitated geopolitical and religious conflict in the region. Finally, the MR Crew signs off with a fantastic message ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday from the person everyone needs to hear from before they give thanks: Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Rivka and Frank are joined by musician, writer, and This Is Revolution host Jason Myles, to talk about the 1984 military drama, A Soldier's Story, which depicts a racially motivated murder at a Louisiana Army base during World War II. They unpack how the film. based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Soldier's Play, presents the complex perspectives of the Black community on morality, respectability, and violence.
Katie talks to the hosts of THIS IS REVOLUTION podcast (TIR) about Black Marxist politics which frequently gets left out, coopted or distorted. TIR was started by long time musician and overall troublemaker Jason Myles in late fall of 2019 in West Oakland, CA. After about a year through the recommendation of Touré Reed, Jason met Black Agenda Report and Huffington Post columnist Pascal Robert. The two bonded over their Marxian class analysis and other topics that they felt was missing in an understanding of the concept of “Black politics”. Pascal continues to write for Black Agenda Report as well as an occasional column in Newsweek, while Jason is a columnist at Sublation Magazine as well as the host of TIR. The two have no signs of slowing down their intellectual output as Pascal is working on a book on Haitian history and Jason continues to expand the show in various directions from live shows, to a feature length video essay that he will be screening for live audiences by year's end. On this edition of Parallax Views, Jason Myles of the THIS IS REVOLUTION podcast and the metal band Bitter Lake joins the program to discuss his Sublation Magazine article "Remembering Woodstock ‘99". Analysis and commentary of the Woodstock '99 music festival, which famously ended in riots and sexual assaults, has resurfaced in 2022 thanks to new documentaries: Netflix's Trainwreck: Woodstock '99 and HBO Max's Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage. These documentaries make the case the the aggressive music of Generation X, particularly bands like Korn and Limp Bitzkit, and crass commercialism were in large part to blame for the Woodstock '99 fiasco and, furthermore, that all of this betrayed the hippie peace and love ethos of the original Woodstock. Jason, who has experience working music festivals, argues that this doesn't really strike the root of the issues that led to Woodstock '99. Specifically, Jason takes a materialist perspective on the matter that looks at relationship between capitalism and not only Woodstock '99 but the original Woodstock music festival of 1969 as well. In doing so h de-mythologizes the romanticized narrative around the original Woodstock festival and questions the nostalgia around the 60s counterculture. All of this and much more covered on this edition of Parallax Views!

Trump furious he couldn't overcharge FBI agents during their brief stay at Mar a Lago; Republicans starting to think maybe they should have let Merrick Garland sit on the Supreme Court instead. It's the GOP that wants to defund the FBI, the Justice Department, the Internal Revenue Service and every other law enforcements agency that tackles white collar criminals like Donald Trump. The only law enforcement agencies Trump and the GOP care about are local police officers who protect property and the rich while keeping the poor in a perpetual state of fear. As luck would have it, two hours and thirteen minutes into tonight's episode the FBI raided Donald Trump's Mar a Lago, and Republicans immediately proved my point by calling to defund the FBI. Pascal Robert, co-host of This Is Revolution podcast, joins us for a conversation about the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo to round up the week in news. Then Sam is joined by Jason Myles, co-host of the This Is Revolution podcast. First, Sam covers the confirmation that Ginni Thomas was conspiring with John Eastman, Trump's Coup Lawyer, and Assange's extradition being approved. Digby and Sam then get right into the updates from Yesterday's 1/6 hearing, from Donald Trump calling his Vice President the “P-word” (hint: it's not “Pence” or “President”), and debate who Trump's next right-hand man will be, especially as the god squad votes are among the most important in his control of the Republican party. Next, Sam and Digby have some discourse on the discourse around 1/6, exploring the contrast between US coverage of the hearings (or really, the lack thereof) and the coverage abroad, getting deep into the US political establishment's obsession with legitimizing the right as a party with integrity, and contrasting them with “magas” and “ultra-magas,” despite the central involvement of active Senators, Congresspeople, and spouses of Supreme Court Justices, with everyone participating, from Grassley to Graham, completely aware of the illegality of what they were planning. Diving deeper into yesterday's focus on Mike Pence, Digby and Sam analyze why someone who supposedly was against this, kept asking people for advice and debating strategy with the MAIN strategizers of the insurrection, before walking through the role of Michael Ludwig in legitimizing the “bipartisan” nature of the committee, and exploring the future of Republican insurrection attempts as they shift to more localized corruption and grassroots bigotry. Then, Sam is joined by Jason Myles as they dive into his recent video essay exploring the progression of Black cinema and the role it played both in Hollywood as a whole and the greater American and African American cultures, starting in the 1960s, with the new left of Maverick filmmakers making independent films and a push for more Black power contrasted with the actual rise of Blaxploitation movies, with movies like Sweet Sweetback and others practically saving Hollywoods bottom line, despite going completely against the general Black intelligentsia. Jason then dives into the next stages, as the ‘90s came back around to independent films (once again due to falling profits) making these “hood films” on the defective young black man, diving into the infection of neoliberalisms' focus on “cultural” shortcomings and ignoring the classism and racism that were the actual issues of the time, and how these stereotypical and exploitative films pushed Black power away from the political realm and into, exclusively, the cultural realm. They wrap up their interview by looking at the modern era of Black cinema, the contrasts between films like Black Panther and Moonlight, and the need to return Black power to a political concept. And in the Fun Half: Tulsi dances around Sean Hannity's stupidity, Jesse Watterboard has an idea to get to the bottom of the SCOTUS leak, and DeSantis celebrates the ancestry of Apartheid heir Elon Musk. Ted Cruz takes shots at Disney's queer agenda, as he points to the integrity of regimes that are rejecting the upcoming “Lightyear” film, such as China and the UAE. Meghan Kelly returns to the media as she calls out her former employers for discussing the fact that trans kids who are rejected by their families frequently resort to suicide, plus, your IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Pascal Robert, co-host of the This Is Revolution podcast, to wrap up the week in news. Pascal first takes on the meaning of yesterday's successful nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, first walking through her qualifications, as the first justice with public defense experience since Thurgood Marshall, and why Biden's reduction of her nomination to identity politics undermines the incredible progressive victory her confirmation provides. He, Emma, and Sam then dive into how her confirmation impacts the ideology of the court, as the first seat replacement that actually shifts the court slightly to the left (despite its otherwise far-right makeup), before Pascal walks through his view of the Right's counter-revolution of the last half-century and the Court's role as a counter-majoritarian conservative institution throughout US history, save the New Deal period. Then reflecting on KBJ's history, they discuss the minimal critiques from the left, alongside her willingness to fight for the underdog, using her early-career experience to practice law from myriad perspectives (rather than just the corporate one), before Pascal wraps up by walking through the last fifty-year progression of the Black political class, from the mayors of the early Civil Rights era that supported redistributive policy despite their neoliberal alignment, through the urban regimes of the '80s that began to fully embrace the neoliberal policies, and into the ‘90s' complete marketization and embrace of DLC politics, as Robert assesses the mayorship of PR expert Eric Adams. Sam and Emma also touch on stalling peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Puerto Rico's continuing power outage, and Lindsay Graham's and Rand Paul's insistence on disrespecting KBJ on the Senate floor. And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew checks out Ron DeSantis's new campaign track "Sweet Florida", then flash to the past to the all-time classic "Bush Was Right", they check in on Ben Shapiro melting down over milestone appointments like KBJ's, Morning Consult shows how much the Child Tax Credit lapse torpedoed Congressional Dems' standing, Judge Jeanine goes ballistic over the concept of student loan debt forgiveness, Steven Crowder sticks to his morals (being against tardiness) and cancels on Matt Gaetz, Jonathan Swan pisses off Mitch McConnell by asking him "do you have morals?", and the Fox & Friends crew go off on Austin, Texas for being *checks notes* "pro-homeless" (???). In today's jam-packed Best of 2021: Sam and Emma host author Clint Smith, staff writer at the Atlantic, to discuss his new book, How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America on how the legacy of slavery has been passed down and obscured through generations of storytelling, and the manner in which this manifests in modern society. They walk through the sites that Smith visits in his book – from Monticello, looking at how the stories of Thomas Jefferson perfectly encapsulate the cognitive dissonance of how Americans view ourselves, to Angola Prison as a symbol of modern enslavement literally build upon a plantation – and how the heirloom of ideology is passed down through every element of our society, through education, through infrastructure, and certainly through community policing measures. Smith explores his experiences at a Sons of Confederate Veterans celebration, and the importance of elevating empirical historical facts in making space for activists and organizers to express contemporary racism as carrying the remnants and residues of these systems through all elements of American society. Then Sam sits down with with Harvard history professor Annette Gordon-Reed on her new book, On Juneteenth, which explores the Texas roots and national consciousness of the holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the South. Beginning in the 1500s, Gordon-Reed walks us through the arrival of slavery in Texas with Spanish settlers, and its development as an Enslaver's Republic as it broke away from Mexico and U.S. slaveholders ventured into the state to capitalize on the protection of the industry. Then, they discuss Gordon Granger's arrival in Texas on June 19, 1865, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, and the active and direct removal of status from former slave owners and deliverance of autonomy to Black freed folk, before they move into the violence of reconstruction in Texas and the South. Professor Gordon-Reed then walks through the importance of Juneteenth since the arrival of Granger, with the purchasing of what would become Emancipation Park in Houston as a grounds for celebration directly following it, why this day, in particular, took off as a celebration of manumission, and how Juneteenth has come into more widespread popularity. Lastly, Sam and Emma are joined by Jason Myles, co-host of the This Is Revolution podcast, as they dissect his Medium article, “I Was a Teenage Anarchist," on the growth of the punk movement around the concepts of authenticity and deconstruction, how that hindered its growth and ability to alter the mainstream, instead, setting it up to be absorbed by the machine, and what that can teach us about the state of the online left today. “There is no doubt that racism is real and has negative consequences for people's lives,” Adolph Reed Jr. and Touré F. Reed note in the abstract to their article “The Evolution of ‘Race' and Racial Justice under Neoliberalism.” “This is why we have consistently argued for the continued value of anti-discrimination policies. But race reductionism's insistence on uncoupling disparities from political economy lends itself to individualist reforms (anti-racism training and swelling the ranks of black capitalists) as responses to structural ailments. We must reject race-reductionist analyses and refuse to accommodate charges that a left focused first and foremost on critique of and challenge to capitalist political economy as such, with its corrosive human consequences, is unacceptably ‘class reductionist.'”What is race reductionism and how does it close off possibilities for liberational politics? How is it that we've come to have such a restrictive understanding of race, culture, identity, and “authenticity” today? How have the political, economic, and ideological changes to society that comprise what we call neoliberalism created a situation where discussions of race and racism are divorced from analyses of class and “capitalist political economy”?As part of a new collaboration between The Real News Network and the podcast THIS IS REVOLUTION, co-hosts Jason Myles and Pascal Robert speak with scholar and activist Adolph Reed Jr. about the genealogy of American conceptions of race and racism, and about the folly of fighting neoliberalism on neoliberalism's own terms. Adolph Reed Jr. is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, a longtime activist, scholar, and commentator, and the author of numerous books, including: Class Notes: Posing as Politics and Other Thoughts on the American Scene; Stirrings in the Jug: Black Politics in the Post-Segregation Era; and The Jesse Jackson Phenomenon: The Crisis of Purpose in Afro-American Politics.Read the transcript of this interview: https://therealnews.com/when-identity-becomes-a-prison-there-can-be-no-liberational-politicsPre-Production/Studio: Jason MylesPost Production: Cameron GranadinoHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Jason Myles & Pascal Roberts, from the THIS IS REVOLUTION podcast join us to talk about black trauma from a political economy and Marxist perspective. Jason and Pascal had Catherine Liu on their show recently to talk specifically about "black trauma spectacle" ongoing within the culture industry, liberal media, and other areas of American society. We asked them what they thought more broadly about the concept of black trauma, racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, and what kind of "treatment plan" is needed to remedy the suffering of those who may suffer under capitalism more disproportionately than others. More therapy for racialized peoples? Reparations and other "race first" programs? So-called "class reductionist" politics? Also, should Harriet compliment men's balls? Just weeks ago, as we reported previously on The Real News, onlookers in the US and around the world were horrified yet again by scenes of pain, desperation, and brutality at the US-Mexico border in Del Rio, Texas. With COVID-19 and global vaccine apartheid continuing to exacerbate a public health crisis, with continuing political turmoil following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in July, and after another devastating earthquake shook the battered nation in August, thousands of Haitian refugees have been forced to leave their homes in the hope of seeking asylum in the US.Instead of having their appeals for asylum heard and their situation recognized for the crisis of humanity that it is, these refugees were met by menacing US Border Patrol agents on horseback who rode them down and rounded them up in brutal fashion. Since then, the US government under President Joe Biden has deployed the Trump-era Title 42 policy to mass expel thousands of refugees back to Haiti without hearing their asylum claims, even though the Department of Homeland Security designated Haiti for Temporary Protected Status in May.While the news cycle has moved on from the immediate so-called “crisis at the border,” the nightmare for Haitians and the country of Haiti is still very much ongoing. In this interview, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks with Pascal Robert about the larger political context that led to the horrifying scenes at the US-Mexico border last month, and about the deep disdain, fear, and imperialist designs that have historically shaped US policy toward Haiti and its people. Pascal Robertis an essayist and political commentator whose work covers Black politics, global affairs, and the history and politics of Haiti. He is the co-host of the podcast THIS IS REVOLUTION, a frequent contributor to the Black Agenda Report, and his writing has been featured in outlets like The Huffington Post, Alternet, and the Washington Spectator.
From the earliest period of Black American history the Black Church has had an integral role in shaping the social fabric of Black life. Throughout various periods of that long history the Black church has also been crucial in Black political action and institution building. In this current moment when Black electoral politics is rooted in the right wing corporate flank of the Democratic Party with many White progressives to the left, is there any potential for the Black church to be anything more than a vehicle of political and social control used by the Black political class? Is there potential for the Black church to be radicalized to embrace an agenda that fights the egregious nature of American capitalism and imperialism? Do phenomena like prosperity ministries relegate the Black church to being a vehicle for promoting conspicuous consumption and Black capitalism, or is a more radical vision possible? We will ask these questions and more on this episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION. About Dr. Floyd: Nikol G. Alexander-Floyd is Associate Professor Political Science at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. We chat about life on the island and how wayyyy too many hoomans are coming to visit the island right now. We also discuss the FDA's latest slimy, desperate, and dangerous move to attempt an international ban on the plant medicine kratom, which helps millions of people around the world, and especially in the U.S., wean off prescription opiates. It helped me to defeat alcoholism. The American Kratom Association is filing a suit to extend the comment period for this proposed ban until later in August- find out more at protectkratom.org. It is the BNP after all so we rant a bit about Big Pharma, gentrification, autocracy, and other assorted cheerful topics relating to the overall tailspin of our late stage global capitalist system. But never fear! We end the discussion on a positive note, discussing past lives and the indomitability of (and need to elevate) the human spirit. There is a notion that poisons the minds of many Americans. The myth of Manifest Destiny. The narrative that the vast empty western lands of what we now call the United States was an untamed wild unknown filled with savages that could only be settled by a truly civilized people. In recent weeks, there has been breaking news from Canada that unmarked mass graves have been found near what were knows as “residential schools”. These “schools” were boarding facilities with a long-standing partnership between religious institutions and national governments. Their goal was to isolate Indigenous youth from their families erase their customs and language and assimilate them to the dominant culture. In the United States, Col. Richard Henry Pratt was maybe the most impactful figure of the off-reservation schools. His goal was that of complete assimilation. His motto that became that of the system, “Kill the Indian, Save the Man”. In this episode of THIS IS REVOLUTION, we'll take a deep dive into the insidious nature of the residential schools in the US as well as Canada with historian John Gram. About John Gram (From his website https://johnrgram.blogspot.com/): Dr. Gram's research and teaching interests focus on the political, social, and cultural consequences of US expansion during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His current research agenda examines the process of indigenous identity formation under the pressures of settler colonialism, as well as the processes by which the United States incorporated frontier and borderland regions. He is the author of Education At the Edge of Empire: Negotiating Pueblo Identity in New Mexico's Indian Boarding Schools (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2015). He also has a blog, “Telegrams” Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. We appreciate each and every one of you. In 1979, the Iranian Revolution upended the political order of the Middle East, sweeping from power the country's pro-American monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The forces that coalesced to ouster the Shah from power were broad, including not only religious conservatives, but liberal, socialists, communists, and national minorities. However, it was the country's religious establishment, under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini, that were ultimately able to take power and establish an “Islamic Republic”. This week on This Is Revolution we take a deep divide into the Iranian Revolution and its aftermath. What were its origins? Which political forces contested for power during the revolution and how has that contest played out in the post-revolutionary era? And in what ways has Iran's continuous relationship with the United States affected political developments over the last four decades. About Eskandar Sadeghi-Boroujerdi: Eskandar Sadeghi-Boroujerdi is an Assistant Professor in Comparative Political Theory at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He was previously a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (2016-2019), where he also obtained his doctorate (2010-2014). Eskandar has published widely on modern Iranian and Shi'i Islamic political thought and is a series editor of Radical Histories of the Middle East (Oneworld). His monograph Revolution and its Discontents: Political Thought and Reform in Iran, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2019. Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. After World War One and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, the victorious Western allies made provision for a Kurdish state in the 1920 Treaty of Sevres. Such hopes were dashed three years later, however, when the Treaty of Lausanne, which set the boundaries of modern Turkey, made no provision for a Kurdish state and left Kurds with minority status in their respective countries. Over the next 80 years, any move by Kurds to set up an independent state was brutally quashed. -From the BBC About Dr. Djene Bajalan(from the Missouri State website): Dr. Djene Rhys Bajalan is a historian of the Middle East specializing the rise of nationalism and the evolution of the Kurdish question. Well it's been not a full week since the events of great storming of the Capital by a mix of QAnon conspires, MAGA heads, Proud Boys, and well, just a bunch of people that have bought into the current administration's false claims about the election being stolen. Would these claims have had the same merit, the same effect on masses of people had not the Russiagate narrative be shoved down the throat of the American people ad nauseam by mainstream media? Twitter and Facebook, after the events of Monday and a GOP mutiny of the Trump wing of the GOP have banned permanently the 45th president. Is it too little too late? Is it the all-controlling hand of “Big Brother” silencing decent? I mean wasn't this part of Kamala Harris' presidential platform? Remember on the debate stage Harris calling for the muting of Trump's Twitter account? A race reductionist argument is also fanning the flames as well. Mainstream media to YouTube pundits persist with the claim that only because the participants of the short siege of the Capitol building were white they weren't harmed, or treated as heavy handed as BLM. 5 people died, one being an officer. Another woman was trampled to death, of course many people saw one woman shot in the neck trying to break into the sealed doors of Congress. Are we building back better? Is the current administration, which has already shown us that they are NOT going to be fundamentally different than the previous neoliberal ones we've seen previously lead us to “restore the soul of America?” Is neoliberalism and the warmongering neoconservatives at the core of the rot of the country? I have some homies here to help us answer these questions. You can Watch Dan Larson on Toy Galaxy Here: youtube.com/toygalaxytv You watch C. After my discussion a few weeks ago with professor and author Touré Reed, I found myself watching the movie Boyz N Tha Hood. In our discussion, we started to critique the politics of many Black leaders of the 90's that were proponents of the 1994 Crime Bill. Not even 5 minutes into the film, the viewer gets hit with the Black on Black crime troupe. The SAME THING I find myself fighting when we hear voices on the right defend state violence, is part of the messaging of this iconic film. A film that I would set off the "Hood Movie" genre of the 90's. I mean by the time you get to movies like "Menace II Society" it's just a more dramatically over the top version of Boyz. I will say again that there was a crazy thing with my computer at the end, where I lost my connection to the WiFi, thus stopping the stream. We did pick up for another hour or so, for part 2 that is available for patrons. We are hosting a livestream Question and Answer session with author of the book "Welcome to the Rebellion: A New Hope in Radical Politics" with author Dr. Michael Harris. “Star Wars doesn't just depict a dystopian future but focuses on fighting it. It says that another galaxy is possible.” “We face a planet-destroying empire – ideologically-driven, deceptive and dangerous. Our most likely path is toward the dark side: violent, exploitative, racist and authoritarian. Unless we change course, unless we rebel against the system that's leading us there.” -Michael Harris from the book, "Welcome to the Rebellion: A New Hope in Radical Politics" Listen to Dr. Harris on the THIS IS REVOLUTION>podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2fPiAlT0zpofskDd5yZ2QJ?si=gPIok2pvTCWt9AoYWV-ggQ Watch the broadcast here: https://youtu.be/kW7eY1I8FNY Buy the book here: https://www.johnhuntpublishing.com/zer0-books/our-books/welcome-to-rebellion Thank you so much for taking the time to check this out.
