It's another Strange Demise in the unfortunate sphere of The Game of Death of Thrones of Death! And we're in Rome, in and about Rome, sort of near Rome, ok he's Roman at least! Valentinian The First. Come hear how he screamed himself to death! (spoilers) Big thanks to Scott Buckley for some lovely music ZapSplat for Music, Marching and Bears! Pay us money to stop on Ko-Fi. WE DARE YOU. Summary: Prepare to travel back in time and embrace the dayglo technicolor of the 1980's, a time when Miami Vice impacted fashion, the PMRC became the best promoters of heavy metal in the world, and JUDAS PRIEST achieved mainstream success and popularity with a shift towards bigger, heavier, more modern metal soundscapes which has become their calling card (with the exception of that one keyboard & synth laden album from '86 that always seems to draw flak, even from fans). Get ready to “drop the needle” on some quality 80's metal loaded with “extra junts” while learning the consensus regarding “slimy gray meat sliders” and fix yourself a “PB&KY sandwich” (to go) before you ride off on the dot matrix “printer paper road out into the sunset” while trying to comprehend why the PMRC co-founder's husband “talks like Paul Stanley” YET does not wear the gloves of shame. Prepare to give “old stretch” a workout before reaching the “Love Zone” (which is right next to the “birth hole”) and JOIN US for JUDAS PRIEST VOL. II: The 80's. Episode 23 of Season 6 was a fantastic affair. It went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 June 2023 at precisely 7pm. The airwaves were treated to the power and majesty of Judas Priest with 'Screaming For Vengeance'. From there it was a flurry of Deep Purple, Tesla, Airbourne and .......... see Artists Featured below for the list. This show was special because we had a worldwide exclusive launch of the second track off the forthcoming Philistine album Seranim, this one's called 'Leviticus' and it's seriously great. We also had the launch of a new feature called Mystery Song. This is a track sent to me by Metal Jaco, I agreed not to listen to it up front so was totally in the dark as to what we are going to hear. Anyway if I tell you what Mystery Track was it will spoil the podcast. It was classified by a listener as 'Linda Take Walk' Music but it went down well. The Immortals this week was a bit different, and we listened to Frank Zappa's masterpiece ‘Titties and Beer'. The Ultimate Challenge as usual got people talking, once the music started shit got real, Megadeth took it with Machine Head and Bush after that. For what its worth my pick was Machine Head. As menetioned TSORR had exclusive rights to be the first to play Philistines second release off their forthcoming album Sensium. I had a great 5 min interview which quickly went to 8 min and could easily have gone an hour. I am thinking of interviewing them again when the album launches and doing a Rock Review style one hour special when its released. Let me know if you like that idea. For the rest it was a pretty heavy show albeit with a slower taper off at the end. I hope you enjoy it. Check out the website and Facebook pages for all tings TSORR. If you want a copy of the book The Story of Rock and Roll get in touch. Artists featured: Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Tesla, Airbourne, WASP, Buckcherry, Rose Tattoo, The Screaming Jets, Accept, Doomsday Outlaw, Texas Hippie Coalition, Junkyard, Seether, Gary Moore, Molly Hatchet, The Color Blew, Halestorm, Joan Jett, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Orbit Culture, Shinedown, My Chemical Romance, Iron maiden, Ayron Jones, Frank Zappa, Bush, Megadeth, Machine Head, Pantera, Philistine, Pink Floyd, Dave Hause, Cold Chisel, Marvelous 3 The Story of Rock and Roll. I was excited to get into this record after really liking Priest's last record, British Steel. Screaming For Vengeance takes a bit more of a polished, hard rocking approach than the previous record and kinda left me wanting more. Check out my review.

Guest: Erik Shaw from Maiden A-Z of the Deep Dive Podcast Network.Happy 40th anniversary to Screaming for Vengeance! Judas Priest's 8th studio album holds some of their most popular songs... but we're not here to talk about those. Your hosts are dying to talk about "Bloodstone", a personal favorite of the panel. George, Tom, and Hattie are joined by returning guest Erik to wax poetic on abstract lyrics and funky guitar lines. We also look at a live version from 2018, and share some thoughts on the whole album. One of the founding groups of heavy metal is Judas Priest, and their eighth studio album entitled Screaming for Vengeance would be their commercial breakthrough album for North America. In addition to the distincive vocals of Rob Halford, the Judas Priest lineup for this album included K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton on guitars, Ian Hill on bass, and Dave Holland on drums.Judas Priest was formed in 1969, but did not issue a record on a major label until 1977 and their third studio album. Their sixth studio album, British Steel, was the first to feature Dave Holland on drums and is considered their high water mark by most critics. However, Screaming for Vengeance would find both heavy metal and mainstream rock success Friends of the show Joe Davis and John Lynch join us for this album while Bruce and Brian are away. The HellionThe lead track to the album is this short instrumental that builds to Electric Eye.Electric EyeThis track follows The Hellion on the album and is often the leading song at Judas Priest concerts. The inspiration comes from George Orwell's 1984 - the electric eye is the camera that the totalitarian government uses to watch over all in the dystopian community. While not released as a single, this is a well known song played on rock stations at the time.Riding the WindA deeper cut, this is everything you would want in a metal song - fast drums, screaming guitars, and high vocals in a minor key. “Tearin' up through life million miles an hour! Blindin' all in sight, surgin' rush of power! Well I'm riding, riding on the wind.”You Got Another Thing ComingThe first single released from the album is now one of Judas Priest's signature songs. It reached number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it is the only Judas Priest song to make that chart. The song reflects the idea of taking life by the horns, and not letting anything stand between you and your dreams. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Raised on the Radio by the Ravyns (from the motion picture “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”)This movie came out in August of 1982, and would be a mainstay of midnight movies throughout the 80's. This song is the leading track from the motion picture soundtrack album.STAFF PICKS:Favourite Shirts by Haircut 100Rob's staff pick is also known as "Boy Meets Girl." Haircut 100 is one of the New Wave bands which was a part of the second British Invasion. It is a fast song with a conga feel. Everybody Wants You by Billy SquierFriend of the show Joe Davis features the lead track from Squier's album "Emotions In Motion." It hit number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent six weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The lyrics reflect the hazards of leaning on superficial looks.Eye of the Tiger by SurvivorFriend of the show John Lynch brings us the main theme from Rocky III." It was also the title song from their third album, and the single was released a day before the movie. Naturally it rapidly climbed the charts and was the number 1 song for the month of August 1982. Beyond Belief by Elvis CostelloWayne's staff pick is a deep cut off Costello's album "Imperial Bedroom." A very complex and multi-layered song, the lyrics are also quite clever. "Keep your finger on important issues/ with crocodile tears and a pocketful of tissues." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Nuevo York by SantanaSantana's distinctive Latin infused guitar licks take us out on this week's podcast.
Prior to Screaming for Vengeance, Judas Priest had solidified their stature as a heavy metal act around the world but not so much in the US. Though 1980's British Steel gave them some chart success in the UK & other parts of the world, big success in the States still eluded them. Thanks to You've Got Another Thing Comin', Priest was able to get on MTV and graduate to headlining arena shows in North America. We examine this heavy metal classic as it turns 40, the Wolf relives seeing them in the front row, how this record holds up today & the legacy of Judas Priest. A time of momentous change in the world. The Weather Channel premiered on cable television, Sony introduced the first compact disc player, “E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial” was released in theaters and Metallica released their “No Life ‘Til Leather” demo. (And that's not even “everything” that happened in 1982!) 1982 METAL was morphing into something louder, faster, and heavier, helping to lay the foundation and pave the way for future generations of metalheads, ensuring that the rest of the 80's (at least from a metal perspective) would become “the best decade ever”. It's time to “put your '82 hat on” and enjoy a little “armpit romance” with the “Abomnigog” you brought home from the club as you “roll one” and experience “higher education” from “The Man of the Year” before you turn off your ColecoVision and JOIN US for a tasting of some 40 year old vintage metal as we revisit 1982: THE YEAR IN METAL. It's 198X, and you're in the record store looking for something new. Suddenly your eyes are drawn to a Judas Priest album bearing the image of this big fuckin' metal eagle swooping down across a yellow background, and you think "I need this album immediately." Upon getting home and listening to it, you were right, and you'll be back for more in no time. Back here in the present, some people who weren't around to have that experience talk about that very album. Does it hold up? Is Rob Halford still one of the greatest voices in metal? How many solos can Schmeev get away with playing on this episode? Find out as we talk about Screaming for Vengeance. Episode 11 continues our NIT Tournament to determine the greatest rock music artist that didn't make our original 64 “team” NCAA Tournament (see episodes 1-8). Hard rock/heavy metal matchups for this episode: (1) Deep Purple (gets bye for first 2 rounds) (2) Judas Priest (gets bye for first 2 rounds) (3) Motörhead vs. (10) Megadeth (4) KISS vs. (9) Alice Cooper (5) Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Dio) vs. (8) Ozzy Osbourne (solo career only) (6) Thin Lizzy vs. (7) Tool. Notes for this episode: Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor was the drummer in Motörhead (we did not mention the last name Taylor). The last huge rock release that was a major “event” was probably Radiohead's In Rainbows in 2007. Correction: Motörhead had only #1 album in the U.K. (the live No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith from ‘81) though Ace Of Spades (‘80) and Iron Fist (‘82) also cracked the top 10. “Adrenaline run” should be “adrenaline rush” (you probably figured that one out already). Deep Purple - The heart of the band was those guitar-keyboard duels (forgot to say keyboard). The classic Deep Purple live album referenced should've been Made In Japan not Live in Japan. Richie Faulkner is the guitarist who replaced K.K. Downing in Judas Priest. British Steel has the razor on the cover not Screaming For Vengeance (doh!). Simon Phillips not Simon Reynolds (a notable rock critic) drummed in Judas Priest, among his many other career credits. Scott somehow forgot to mention his favorite Judas Priest album, 1978's Stained Class. Also 1979's Unleashed In The East is one of the great live albums.

Throw up those horns, because today’s episode is all about heavy metal and hard rock! We discuss whether stereotypes about metal and its fans are unfairly hurting its chances with the NomCom, and we list 18 artists we think warrant consideration for the Rock Hall. Eric also talks about loincloths and proper umlaut usage, while Mary somehow manages to bring up Carole King in a metal conversation as well as make up a word (is disclude a word?).
Episode Description: Judas Priest top 10 songs, is what this episode is all about. Sonny and I get into why we love Judas Priest and play some of our favorites. I also review the Judas Priest concert I recently attended here in my town. What’s The Story: Judas Priest is easily one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. They were in my earliest discoveries as I started to form my obsession with hard rock and heavy metal. I got into British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance almost at the same exact time in high school. I saw them 2 hours outside my hometown on the World Vengeance tour in February of ‘83. It was my 2nd big concert I attended. The Australian band Heaven opened up and I was right on the barrier for the whole thing. After seeing the recent Firepower Tour hit my town it seemed like a great time to reminisce and talk about some of our favorite Judas Priest tunes. Crank It Up! "It's gonna be great to come back and see all of our metal maniacs first and foremost", enthused Rob Halford, frontman for Judas Priest, talking about their upcoming appearances at Download Australia. "We never get to Australia as often as we'd like so this is a special treat and very exciting. We're looking forward to bringing our Firepower music too. This tour has been on the road for over a year now and we're thrilled to be bringing some of our music from Firepower to share and perform with our metal maniacs in Melbourne and Sydney".That album, released last year, reaffirmed Judas Priest's position atop the metal tree, with Halford admitting the band made a conscious effort to recreate periods from their glory days of music on the album."The only thing that I can recall thinking is when Glenn, Richie and myself sat down and said with all of these great albums and all of these great songs later the only thing that we really wanted to do was re-invent some of the classic moments of Priest" he said, "Which we could trace to the length and breadth of our roots if you think about it with albums like Sad Wings of Destiny, Screaming For Vengeance, Painkiller, British Steel, Sin After Sin, Killing Machine... it just goes on and on (laughs), but internally we knew what that meant so that was the focus".In the full interview Rob talks about Ozzy Osbourne's recent health scare and what effect it has on fellow musicians, the birth of Judas Priest, how it felt being part of the New Wave of British Metal movement, the bands early stage attire and finding their musical image and identity, Judas Priest's place in heavy metal history, the implementation of twin guitars into their music and how it affected the band, when he felt Judas Priest made their mark on the music scene, the British Steel album, and more.
