Proletarian TV | 10 August 2026 Napoli health workers standing against genocide Roberto De Gregorio, an Italian nurse in southern Italy's largest hospital, talks to the international workers' event hosted by the World Anti-imperialist Platform in July 2026. In his speech he outlines the work he and his fellow workers at Cardarelli hospital (in Napoli/Naples) have done to show solidarity with the healthworkers under attack in Gaza. And he talks about how this work has helped to form a permanent collective within the hospital whose aims have become broader. On the one hand, they focus on the problems faced by their hospital and those who work and are treated there. But they also try to look further and to place those problems in the broaded social and political context. As Roberto puts it: "Our hospitals' problems are the consequence of political problems, so we're also discussing this and starting to try to find political solutions. “We mustn't leave every hospital to try to save itself, every department to save itself, and every worker to think about working only for himself. Our Chair Joti Brar gives an introduction to comrade Her Ismara, and makes some piercing observations in response. Ismara celebrates the 100th anniveraary of the birth of Fidel Castro, leader and inspirer of the Cuban Revolution, as well as the storming of the Moncada Barracks on 26th July 1953, that triggered the Revolution. Although that heroic assault on the fortress of US comprador Batista failed, it led to the trial of Fidel and his comrades, which Fidel turned into a tribunal of the reactionary and dictatorial regime. “History will absolve me!” Declared Fidel, at the conclusion of his epic speech of defence! And on January 1st 1959, the revolutionary forces led by Fidel, Raul and Che Guevara victoriously entered Havana, ushering in the rule of the Working People and the dawn ofa socialist era in Latin America. The US IMPERIALISTS HAVE NEVER FORGIVEN the people of Cuba for breaking free of their grip, and today desire to have their brothels, casinos, landed estates and latifundia, wage slaves, peasants, vassels, monopolies and sweat-shops restored to their corrupt and mafiosi-led grip. Despite the vindictive sanctions - intensified to fever pitch by this vindictive and unstable Trump regime - and the special economic measures that the Cubans have had to take to withstand those sanctions, Cuba stands firm, on the front line of the anti Imperialist struggle. The state constructs markets strategically, using mechanisms like the dual-credit policy to force both domestic and foreign automakers toward sustainable production targets.While the episode isn't focused on MMT, it highlights how China's monetary sovereignty enables fiscal space for long-term industrial planning. The nation's ability to issue its own currency and direct credit toward clean development highlights a crucial distinction from Global South countries trapped in IMF-imposed structural adjustment programs. This self-determined policy space, which is denied to nations like India and much of Africa, allows Beijing to absorb neoliberal shocks while maintaining state control over the economy.China's sustainable growth model is anti-imperialist in two key ways. First, energy independence reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels that expose the country to geopolitical leverage through choke points like the Malacca Strait. Second, technological autonomy focuses on developing indigenous productive forces that break the Western monopoly over clean technology.By keeping private capital subordinate to state priorities, China shows that socialist modernization offers a workable alternative for the Global South, avoiding the de-development and resource plunder that characterizes Western industrialization.China's model may still have some contradictions, but it continues to show what is possible when state power is wielded in the interests of the working class.Ashwin Shantha (they/them) is a doctoral student whose research focuses broadly on the political economy of sovereign development in the global South, focusing specifically on China and South Asia. In this episode, Breht goes on The Left Page podcast as a guest to explore the role that science fiction plays as part of the cultural superstructure of empire: a genre born in the shadow of British and American imperial power, shaped by colonial assumptions, and increasingly haunted by attempts to critique the very structures it once blindly reproduced. From early invasion fiction and dreams of space conquest to modern works like Dune, Blade Runner, The Expanse, and The Three-Body Problem, Leon, Frank and Breht examine how sci-fi imagines the future through the unresolved contradictions of the present: capitalism, colonialism, racial hierarchy, technological domination, corporate sovereignty, and imperial war. Series Summary This series brings together scholars researching the relationship between green finance, and the everyday experiences of violence and solidarity across the world. Green finance, the various models of loans and investments that ostensibly support mitigation and adaptation to climate change, is promoted by international bodies such as the United Nations and the World Bank. However, the abstraction of this language and policies involved obscures the connections to everyday practices of extraction and resistance. This series reinfuses the economics of climate change with people's histories and agencies. Therefore, anthropologists and adjacent field scholars have a particularly apt skill set for grounding the climate finance discussion in place-based, community-informed explorations across the globe.   In the second episode of the series, Denise Fernandes recounts the global process that solidified a top-down and market-driven approach to climate change action. In her analysis of the Rewa Solar Park in India, Denise weaves together the long history of colonialism, the flow of capital, and science and technologies that produce the “free, clean, and green energy.” As a result of these processes, certain spaces, like the Gurh tehsil, become banjaar zameen (barren lands) amenable to megaprojects backed by green loans from the World Bank, in what Denise describes as American energy imperialism. She also brings art into the energy discussion! From Odetta's interpretation of Woody Guthrie's “Pastures of Plenty,” to her photographic narrative of invisibilized fracking in Colorado Denise shows her interdisciplinary approach. She also discusses her teaching and public press articles, like the ones in The Wire, Article 14, and New Lines Magazine.   Guest Denise Fernandes is an Assistant Professor of Global Environmental Politics at Whitman College, Washington, USA. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Her teaching and scholarship focus on renewable energy and fossil fuel landscapes, climate justice, and the reproduction of injustices and inequalities in historically marginalized communities in the Global South. For her Ph.D., she studied the financialization of World Bank-financed solar parks in India. In this work, she investigated the historic narratives and rhetoric that shaped solar decision-making processes during the energy transition in the Global South. She regularly collaborates with artists and journalists to visually portray energy landscapes and the climate crisis, and to enhance the importance of public scholarship within academia. Host Jéssica Malinalli Coyotecatl-Contreras is a University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies at UC Santa Cruz. She holds a PhD in Anthropology (UCSB, 2025) and a Master's in Social Anthropology (El Colegio de Michoacán, 2013). Her work builds on the knowledge of women and Indigenous communities, at the intersection of the (built) environment, feminist political ecology, and anti-coloniality in the Americas. Her work has been featured in peer-reviewed articles and online pieces for broader audiences. She is currently working on her first manuscript “Volcanic Sustainability: Progressive Fossil Capitalism, Violent Energy Transition, and Indigenous Futurities in Mexico.”

This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the war in Iran and what it means not only for Iran but for the wider region and the entire world. What have we learned about the difference in the ways the imperialist and anti-imperialist countries approach war? We discussed the fact that Iran has for decades held off using its real nuclear option: domination of the Hormuz strait. The fact that is it using it now shows that the war that it knew would eventually be forced upon it has finally arrived. And for Iran it is existential, and the outcomes it is fighting for are non-negotiable. We compared Iran's objectives fighting Nato and the Zionist proxies with Russia's in its fight against Nato and the Banderite proxies, and noted that they are almost the same: removal of military threats against the country; removal of fascist proxies on the doorstep; acceptance of the country's sovereign right to determine its own affairs in peace; reparations. Meanwhile, despite a bit of ‘hesitation' (partly owing to genuine disputes about how to proceed and partly for public consumption), the rest of the imperialist camp is ultimately going all-in on the USA's war against Iran. Because they know that their economic system is on the verge of total meltdown, and war is their only possible salvation. And they also know that they will ultimately stand or fall as one. Those of us who live in the imperialist countries need to be doing everything possible to organise a real anti-imperialist mass movement here at home. Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Russia, the Sahel states, Venezuela, Cuba are all on the front lines of this war, sacrificing their lives in the fight against our common class enemies. Joti Brar: This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the Epstein files. What do they reveal to us about the nature of the capitalist-imperialist state machinery and western bourgeois democracy? What has been exposed is not just the depravity, supremacy and criminality of the ruling elites, but the personal networks (long ago described by the founders of Marxist science) through which they operate, do deals and manage the direction of the system – far away from any mechanisms of public accountability, scrutiny or control. The truth is that we didn't need these fresh revelations to prove that the present system is inherently genocidal, sociopathic and anti-worker, or to understand that it is irreformable in all its essentials. But the latest revelations certainly confirm that putting our hopes for change in the replacement of a few ruling-class puppets in Parliament or Downing Street is a futile activity. We spoke about Peter Mandelson's role in the Labour party, and the dangerous game being played by opponents who are keen to use the revelations for party-political point-scoring. A prolonged focus on the Epstein scandal might seem like a heaven-sent distraction from all the imperialist warmongering and looming economic catastrophe, but it could end up exposing and ruining not just a particular politician or party, but the whole system of bourgeois rule in the eyes of the people. Along the way, we also asked why so many independent media commentators continue to repeat imperialist lies about Venezuela's leadership having ‘sold out' and the USA's regime-change operation having been successful, although there is still no evidence to support such assertions and every reason to treat them as US psyop narratives. Finally, we talked about why there is no way forward for humanity while this system continues to exist, and why, despite all its horrors, there are still some who fear the prospect of the ‘instability' (ie, social upheaval) that will inevitably accompany the collapse, defeat and dismantlement of Anglo-American imperialism.
