Joti Brar: This week I spoke with Garland Nixon about the Epstein files. What do they reveal to us about the nature of the capitalist-imperialist state machinery and western bourgeois democracy? What has been exposed is not just the depravity, supremacy and criminality of the ruling elites, but the personal networks (long ago described by the founders of Marxist science) through which they operate, do deals and manage the direction of the system – far away from any mechanisms of public accountability, scrutiny or control. The truth is that we didn't need these fresh revelations to prove that the present system is inherently genocidal, sociopathic and anti-worker, or to understand that it is irreformable in all its essentials. But the latest revelations certainly confirm that putting our hopes for change in the replacement of a few ruling-class puppets in Parliament or Downing Street is a futile activity. We spoke about Peter Mandelson's role in the Labour party, and the dangerous game being played by opponents who are keen to use the revelations for party-political point-scoring. A prolonged focus on the Epstein scandal might seem like a heaven-sent distraction from all the imperialist warmongering and looming economic catastrophe, but it could end up exposing and ruining not just a particular politician or party, but the whole system of bourgeois rule in the eyes of the people. Along the way, we also asked why so many independent media commentators continue to repeat imperialist lies about Venezuela's leadership having ‘sold out' and the USA's regime-change operation having been successful, although there is still no evidence to support such assertions and every reason to treat them as US psyop narratives. Finally, we talked about why there is no way forward for humanity while this system continues to exist, and why, despite all its horrors, there are still some who fear the prospect of the ‘instability' (ie, social upheaval) that will inevitably accompany the collapse, defeat and dismantlement of Anglo-American imperialism. A recent op-ed by the New York Times Editorial Board calls for the U.S. military to reinvent itself and rearm itself in new ways in the face of the Western capitalist order losing its hegemony to rising powers across the world. The very idea of returning to a multipolar arrangement without the United States at the forefront terrifies the ruling class - including those elements who are at odds with the Trump administration on specific policies, tactics or details of how things are implemented.The Times piece reinforces the newspaper's long role as a mouthpiece for the capitalist class and for imperialism. The op-ed isn't aimed at the average American, though it contains plenty of fearmongering about supposed threats from its favorite boogeymen China and Russia. It's really aimed at restoring some sense of unity with those isolationist, so-called “America First” sectors. Not only did the Women's struggle launch the strike that triggered the October Revolution, but the Bolshevik party and movement would not have succeeded were it not for the participation of very many women throughout its ranks - from Alexandra Kollontai (People's Commissar for Welfare in the initial Soviet government - unheard of and undreampt of in the capitalist nations in 1917!), to Krupskaya and tens of thousands more. Indeed no revolutionary workers movement can succeed unless it is able to mobilise the working women for the struggle. Having come to power, the Revolutionary Soviet government in the RSFSR, in re-building the economy, in uprooting norms of exploitative society, in educating the entire population, and in re-writing the laws and the constitution of the Russian and other Soviet Nations, remade society to suite the needs of the working class and peasant masses, and in so doing revolutionised relations between men and women. For the first time the communist society, under the dictatorship of the proletariat and peasantry, put women on an equal footing, creating legal and actual physical social conditions that allowed women to take a full and active part in the running of society, to work and to govern -- including the mass provision of socialised childcare, creates, kindergartens, and high quality dining-rooms and restaurants throughout the territory of the Soviet Union. It was, of course, the Soviet government that not only decreed the equality of women, but gave the women full equality and full voting rights - more than a decade before the Suffaragist movement in Britain succeeded in wresting any voting concessions for women. Truly, in the Soviet Union, Women held up half the sky! Vicky explains the heroic role that Soviet Women took in the ranks of the Red Army, in smashing the Imperialist war of intervention and above all in defeating and dismantling the German Nazi War Machine, launched with vitriolic fury against he Soviet people on June 22nd 1941. This year is the 80th anniversary of the great victory of the Fatherland liberation war and great ant-fascist war, in which the Soviet people gave 27b million lives to Vanquish German and European Fascism - and China some 40 million to Vanquish Japanese Fascism. Israel's US-backed genocidal destruction of Gaza has exploded the fiction of the “rules-based” international order and exposed the violent, people-destroying, land-grabbing imperialism it was always based on. Over the last two years, the US and Israel have carried out a genocidal war in Gaza, officially killing over 60,000 people, bombing Gaza's cities to smithereens, and displacing 90% of its 2.1 million people. Their blockade of almost all aid has caused a famine that threatens to kill hundreds of thousands of people. But first historian Greg Grandin talks about the Pope, immigration, imperialism and his excellent new book America "America, América: A New History of the New World" Greg Grandin is Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of a number of prize-winning books, including most recently The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America, and The Empire of Necessity: Slavery, Freedom, and Deception in the New World, which won the Bancroft and Beveridge prizes in American History and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize in the UK. He is also the author of Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History, as well as for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Yaakov Shapiro is an international speaker, author, and pulpit rabbi for over 30 years, now emeritus. He has attained an enviable place in the arena of anti-Zionist public intellectuals, having constructed a unique oeuvre on the ideology of Zionism and its relationship to Judaism. After graduating high school at age 16, Rabbi Shapiro dedicated himself to full-time study of religion, becoming the protégé of some of the most well-regarded rabbinic scholars in Orthodoxy. Among his areas of research are religious philosophy, analytic theology, Talmud, Halachah, and Biblical exegesis. At age 19 he published his first book, משפטי הבירורים, a collection of original expositions on rabbinic principles of tort adjudication. His most recent work, The Empty Wagon: Zionism's Journey from Identity Crisis to Identity Theft (2018), a 1381-page treatise on the differences between Judaism and Zionism, is the most comprehensive work written on the subject and considered by many to be definitive. Jennifer Koonings is a psychiatric nurse practitioner, New York State certified sexual assault forensic examiner (SAFE) and former ER nurse. She completed graduate studies in global public health. She was fired from her long held held SAFE role for her anti-genocide advocacy after the NY district attorney's office accused her of being a rape apologist as well as the reason why a sexual assault victim she provided care to and testified in court for did not receive justice. She currently works providing mental health services to underserved women in the NYC shelter system.
