The BBC is under fire over its failure to remove a racial slur shouted by John Davidson, who has Tourette syndrome, from its broadcast of the Bafta awards. Davidson was heard shouting the N-word while two stars of the film Sinners, Delroy Lindo and Michael B Jordan, were on stage. He said controversy over the incident had left him “distraught” and that he had been assured any offensive words would be edited out. The BBC has apologised for the error and said producers overseeing the coverage did not hear the slur. LISTEN TO SWING KIDS HERE: https://swingkids.bandcamp.com/   San Diego, like its northern cousin Seattle, has always existed on the periphery of mainstream cultural circuits—too geographically isolated for major label attention, yet fertile ground for subcultural innovation. Its position at the edge of the U.S.–Mexico border makes it a fascinating site for hybrid forms, a crossroads of tension, migration, and creativity. In the early 1990s, out of that liminal zone, emerged Swing Kids—a band that fused the rhythmic sensibility of swing jazz with the sonic dissonance of hardcore punk. Their 1994 self-titled EP was less a collection of songs than an act of sonic revolt—a controlled detonation that anticipated what would later be called “screamo.” While their time together was brief, Swing Kids' influence continues to reverberate, embodying the ethos of art as confrontation—a refusal to conform to genre, commerce, or calm. I'm honored to welcome them today to talk about the aesthetics of chaos, the politics of sound, and what it means to create something truly disruptive in a culture that increasingly rewards conformity. Many early interpretations of the Katrina disaster quickly cohered around a racial justice perspective, which rehearsed familiar narratives of the color line as the central axis of conflict in American life. The truth of such narratives seemed undeniable in the face of the news footage, testimonies, and imagery of mostly black New Orleanians stranded in the flooded city and struggling to survive amid chaos and little government rescue and relief.
