"Just one more year, to be safe."I've heard that sentence more times than almost any other in my career. One year becomes two, two becomes five. By the time they finally retire, something has shifted and retirement looks very different. This is the math of working one more year. Both sides of it.We're going to cover:- why Mark and Carol (example case) had $2.5 million saved and still couldn't say yes- the $600 a month question that changed everything in the room- what Carol said when I asked how many good years she and Mark actually had left- why Mark realised three of those years were already gone- the cost that never shows up on a balance sheet--Advisory services are offered through Root Financial Partners, LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. In this episode: one-more-year syndrome, worry & fear, mindfulness for financial independence, “enough” mindset, living freedom now with Pete Adeney (Mr. Money Mustache)Episode SummaryPete Adeney (Mr. Money Mustache) argues that the biggest trap on the path to financial independence isn't math, it's worry. He and Adam unpack how fear fuels “one-more-year syndrome,” why the same worry often follows people into retirement, and how perspective and mindfulness can help interrupt the brain's constant problem-finding loop. The conversation reframes freedom as something to practice now, not later, and challenges listeners to stop optimizing for worst-case scenarios at the expense of living.Guest BioPete Adeney, best known as Mr. Money Mustache, is a personal finance writer and long-time voice in the FIRE movement. After building an engineering career and saving aggressively, Pete retired before age 31 and began sharing what he was learning about spending less, investing simply, and building a life where work is optional.Resources & Books MentionedMr. Money MustacheDeep Work (Cal Newport)Guest Contact InformationMr. Money MustacheMMM Boot Camp email seriesKey TakeawaysName the real enemy: worry, it quietly turns FI into “one more year,” even when the math already works.Build “worry immunity” with perspective: notice how the mind invents problems (the HOA/mailbox example) and reality-check what's truly at stake.Use mindfulness to turn down the volume on fear stories so you can choose freedom now instead of optimizing for worst-case hypotheticals.Remember that “enough” is a practice: start living parts of the life you want today so retirement isn't a leap into the unknown.Join the Mindful FIRE Legends community at MindfulFIRE.org/join.PS: Introducing the…

What if "one more year" isn't a failure of courage. What if it's a messy, human, sometimes wise transition between the life you built and the life you're finally ready to choose? In this spontaneous, unusually raw episode, Bill, Jackie, and Patrick crack open the emotional side of financial independence. They go beyond the surface of the hesitation, identity shift, grief, relief, and weird freedom that can show up when the math says you're done but your nervous system is still catching up. Bill shares what it feels like to downshift after unexpectedly reaching FI, why he's enjoying work more now that he doesn't need it, and how a heartbreaking night in the ER sharpened his thinking about what really counts. Jackie reflects on her own two-year "one more year" phase and why she no longer sees it as a mistake so much as a cushion she needed. Patrick adds the planner's lens: if a choice still serves your life, it may not be "one more year" syndrome at all. This episode is a heartfelt reminder that the real work isn't just reaching the number but learning how to let go when the time comes. This episode covers: Why "one more year syndrome" may not actually be a bad thing The emotional transition from being FI on paper to actually changing your life Bill's intentional downshift and how FI gave him leverage at work Jackie's two-year hesitation and why she now sees it with more grace How fear, identity, purpose, and burnout all shape retirement timing  Why working after FI can still make sense if it serves your life The difference between choosing one more year and drifting into it unconsciously How tragedy and loss can change the way you think about time Why the second chapter of life requires more than just good math How late starters can prepare emotionally, not just financially, for freedom . === SUPPORT  THE  SHOW ===

The biggest financial mistake high-earning physicians make isn't overspending — it's the exact opposite. In this episode of the Money Meets Medicine podcast, Dr. Jimmy Turner and Justin Harvey, CFP® dive into one of the most overlooked challenges in physician personal finance: the super saver trap. While most financial advice for doctors focuses on avoiding lifestyle inflation, living like a resident, and preventing the Diderot Effect, Jimmy and Justin tackle the other side of the coin — what happens when financially literate physicians save too much and can't flip the switch to actually enjoy their wealth. In this episode, you'll learn: Why the traditional "live like a resident" advice can backfire for financially literate physicians How the 10% Rule allows you to enjoy lifestyle upgrades without sabotaging your financial future The identity crisis that hits doctors when they realize they could go part-time, cut back to 3 days a week, or retire early Why "one more year syndrome" keeps physicians grinding long after they've reached financial independence How to balance saving, spending, and living a life you actually enjoy as a high-income earner The values-based decision-making framework Justin uses with clients facing major financial trade-offs (home upgrades, practice ownership, business launches) Why dying with too much money is a real risk for financially literate doctors — and how to avoid it How to use the Kinder questions to uncover what you actually want from financial independence Jimmy shares his personal journey of saving over a third of his income early in his attending career, then deliberately scaling back to take a lower-paying job 30 minutes from home so he could coach his kids' baseball team and be present for his family. Justin shares a real client story about a physician weighing a $2.7 million home purchase against time to retirement, work-life balance, and family values. Whether you're a resident, fellow, early-career attending, or established physician approaching financial independence, this episode will challenge you to ask the harder existential questions: What is enough? When can you flip the switch? And are you using money as a tool — or letting it use you? Resources mentioned in this episode:

As you approach retirement, the questions shift. It's no longer just “How much have I saved?” It becomes, “When do I want the freedom to retire?” “How much risk do I really need to take?” And perhaps most importantly — “What is my money for?” Today, I'm joined by financial planner Zach Morris for a candid conversation about risk tolerance versus risk capacity, sequence of return risk, working one more year, helping family, and why having a 100% probability of financial success might actually mean you're leaving life on the table. If you're within five years of retirement — or wondering whether you're truly ready — this episode will help you think differently about risk, purpose, and pulling the trigger. Future Hall of Famer Bobby Wagner announced his intention to return for Year 15 — and now the big question in Washington is simple: should the Commanders bring him back? Doc Walker and Anthony both say yes… but with different visions. Doc believes Wagner's leadership, football IQ, and command of the defense are too valuable to let walk — especially for a unit still finding its identity. However, Doc wants to see Wagner in a more limited, situational role to keep him fresh and maximize his impact across a full season. Anthony sees it differently. He believes the new defensive scheme fits Wagner perfectly and could allow him to remain an every-down presence. In Anthony's eyes, Wagner's instincts and processing ability still make him one of the smartest linebackers in the league — and in the right system, that matters more than raw speed.

As the year closes, Jesus' parable of the barren fig tree reframes time as mercy: the owner's demand to cut it down makes sense in a world obsessed with speed, results, and replacing what disappoints, but the gardener pleads for one more year - not to excuse fruitlessness, but to do purposeful work in the soil, even the slow and unglamorous work of “manure.” The sermon confronts how instant-gratification habits (especially through technology) train us to treat people like devices - demanding quick performance and cutting them off when they don't deliver - while Jesus shows a different way: patient love that tends, digs, and invests. Yet that patience is not permission to remain unchanged; faith exists to bear fruit, and Jesus calls us to pursue both faithfulness and fruitfulness. The invitation is to step into the new year resisting quick judgment, trusting God's slow transforming grace, and choosing to live in the ways of the manure - because as long as the gardener is still tending the tree, hope remains.

We almost made hockey great again in America but Team USA did fall in OT to Canada in the final of the 4Nations tournament.  But let's keep it real here... better to lose at hockey than to lose $200 billion a year to their country.    KKHI Co-host Stephen Miller took over a news conference at the White House Thursday and gave a perfect Civics 101 lecture to the ridiculous media.    Meanwhile, Trump welcomed Tiger Woods to the White House and met with PGA Tour and LIV golf officials to broker an agreement for the two to work together or merge.    Actor John Travolta owns a piece of KC history.    Travis Kelce is giving vibes that he may have one more year left but it would look different than before.  The Royals play their first spring training game.  A tennis star breaks down in the middle of her match, you have to hear this.    And our song of the week is the break up song that has become an American anthem.

The NFL has apparently ended racism in America as they will no longer call for it to be ended with logos on the playing field.  All joking aside, this is a really, really big deal as we keep reminding everyone we now live in a post racist/post cancellation free speech America.  What a glorious time to be alive.    President Trump will attend the game, the first sitting president ever.  Andy Reid says he's back for at least another year in 2025, the Chiefs defense is on quite a playoff roll stopping running backs and costs for a possible parade are going to cost taxpayers.     The Royals will feature Sunday games on broadcast tv as they announce a new deal.    Trump has quite a plan for Gaza that is similar to something I used to joke about at work 25 years ago.  And it's a really good idea.  The Department of Education is targeted for elimination, USAID is on administrative leave and a plan for Iran is dire if they get out of line.  Every day is a whirlwind for the Trump team.  Incredible.
