HIGHWAY, 11min,. USA Directed by Douglas Alan Cunningham Betrayed by her husband, Amanda, a former Army Ranger, drives hours to meet a revenge lover but is followed by a mysterious and menacing truck on lonely desert roads. https://www.facebook.com/highwayashortfilm https://www.instagram.com/highway_the_movie/ Get to know the filmmaker: I've always been fascinated by neo-noir westerns, films like Steven Spielberg's Duel (1971), Oren Shai's The Frontier (2015), and the early works of director John Dahl, especially Kill Me Again (1989) and Red Rock West (1993). John Sayles' Lone Star (1996), Jonathan Mostow's Breakdown (1997), and the Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men (2007) are three other greats in this same subgenre. Although I wouldn't call Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas (1984) a neo-noir western, per se, it shares many of the same aesthetics and was a huge influence on my early thoughts about HIGHWAY. Equally influential were Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1982) and Mad Max Fury Road (2015), both directed by George Miller. Finally, Ridley Scott's Themla and Louise (1992) also influenced HIGHWAY, not just because of the road movie aspects, but also because of the theme of sisterhood that features so prominently in that film. When I first saw Lindsey Hawkes (who plays Amanda, the lead in HIGHWAY) in a different short film in late 2021, somehow her look–that mixture of physical toughness and emotional vulnerability–brought all those different influences together into one story in my mind. Once that happened, the script was not difficult to write at all, and I was determined to make the film. As a major supplier of monitoring and control systems to the water sector, Ovarro is fully versed in the challenges faced by global utilities today. Still struggling to understand the new lockdown arrangements for England announced on the evening of Sunday the 9th of May, 2020, Charles Adrian reintroduces his listeners to four books given to him by guests on the podcast. Towards the end of this rather long episode, you might hear some banging in the background, which was coming through the wall from one of Charles Adrian’s neighbours. Apologies for this. Correction: When Charles Adrian talks about spondees in this episode, he should be talking about trochees. You can read about trochees on Wikipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trochee and about spondees here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spondee. Also, the book by James Frey that Charles Adrian calls A Thousand Tiny Little Pieces is in fact called A Million Little Pieces. Branching out into the gardens with Paul we continue our conversation from part 1 https://eattmag.com/join-us-in-part-one-of-our-tour-of-the-royal-botanic-garden-sydney/ Where we began our tour standing on the original footprint of the 1816 Botanic gardens a small section of what was known as the Governor's domain to start this botanic garden. From there in part 2 https://eattmag.com/part-two-of-the-sydney-royal-botanic-gardens-podcast/ We hear how recently, archaeologists discovered a grinding stone from a place called Cuddie Springs, and that grinding stone had starch grains from kangaroo grass that was 32,000 years old. How Vines introduced into the Colony of New South Wales. Now in the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens Podcast Part 3 we learn of how Vines introduced into the Colony of New South Wales by James Busby Esq. After a most delicious European tour in 1832 sent back on the Lady Harewood in 1832, an extensive collection of over 500 vine cuttings selected from the different vineyards of France. The experimental garden Charles Fraser and another early botanist, Alan Cunningham brought back seed and even seedlings of these trees and planted them in the experimental garden among others between 1824 and 1828. Looking to see how these trees would perform and how they could be used as timber trees. Cedar Red Cedar grew well and become one of the most valuable commodities coming out of the Australian colonies. So well in fact Red Cedar can be found in many old town halls or in old buildings, both here but also in places like Manchester and London, and also in places in India. Into the Palm house Charles Moore whom was born in 1820, in Dundee Scotland. Had arrived in Sydney on 14 January 1848 and took up the position of Director of the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney, a position he held until 5 May 1896. Where he had decided to start planting the palms out in the old experimental gardening 1862, and where we still have some of those original plantings. Ken grew up on a farm in Hope Valley, Rhode Island. In 1967 he joined the Marines and began his study of the Fighting Arts. While with the USMC, he studied Combat Fighting, Weapons Combat, Infantry Training, Basic Specialist Training, and Jungle Guerrilla Warfare Training. He then got his chance to evaluate this training as he was sent to combat in Viet Nam. Upon returning, he stopped over in Okinawa and witnessed Okinawian Shorin-ryu Karate. He made up his mind that he would study this art when he returned home to the States. In 1971 he began his study of Shorin-ryu when he met and began studying with Sensei Mario Yambao. Sensei Yambao had won the Bronze Medal at the Japan World Tournament and had just arrived from the Phillipines. Ken studied with Mario for fifteen years and earned Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) in Okinawian Shorin-ryu. Later earning his forth degree when promoted by 8th. degree Jun Caballero. Ken also studied and has black belt rank in Judo, Ju-Jutsu, TaiHo-Jutsu, SenI-Ryu Budo as well as un-ranked arts like Catch Wrestling and Hung Gar. During this time, Ken also studied Judo, Ju-jitsu, Taiho-jitsu, and Chinese Shaolin Chin-na. It was at this time that he started to dissect the Shorin-ryu kata (forms) and return the techniques to Pre 1900 meanings following the principles of Shaolin Chin-na. Over the years Ken dove into a deep study in the ancient art of Chin-na which has five sections: Muscle Manipulation, Bone Dislocation, Circulatory Disruption, Breath Disruption, and Pressure Point Attacks. The Pre 1900 was reborn and Ken called it Kempo-jitsu Pre 1900 MA, meaning "Chinese/Okinawian Truth". Ken was to bring the old martial art to the attention of sport martial artists through out America. Most students of "Sports Martial Arts" believe they are studying the "Old Arts" , but are in fact practicing the art developed between 1900 and 1940 for Okinawian school children. Ken made it a point to meet and listen to many Grandmasters of other arts through the years. Among these are: Grand Master Winchell P C Woo of the Hung Gar Fu Hok (Hung Family Tiger/Crane) who taught Ken many secrets of Chin-na O Sensei Phillip S Porter the American Judo Legend under who Ken won his 5th Dan in Judo Grand Master of ITJF Taiho-jutsu Bernard "Gil" Gilbert who is an expert in Vital Point Attacks and Restraining Techniques and over the years earned his 10th. degree under GM Gilbert. Grandmaster of American Taiho-jitsu Alan Cunningham who excels in Law Enforcement techniques and Short Stick. Ken learned many techniques from GM Cunningham. Master 6th Degree James Byersdorf who spent many years teaching Judo and Ju-jitsu at the MACKO Headquaters before moving to Vermont. The world lost a fine Judo teacher when Master Byersdorf passed away in 2018. Grandmaster Kenneth Miarecki who presently works on Judo and Sen-i Ryu Budo with Ken at MACKO Headquarters. Thanks to GM Miarecki Ken has perfected Judo balance in combat which he incorporated into his art of Kempo-Jitsu Pre 1900 MA. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/martial-maze/support
