This week's episode, I had the great pleasure of interviewing self-defense expert Grandmaster David Amiccuci. David has a wealth of experience and has been training in martial arts since the fourth grade when he started wrestling. David has been training in martial arts for over 40 years and was a correctional officer for 29 years, where he was the Team Leader for their tactical team for the majority of his career. I was blessed to have trained with Grand Master Amiccuci for eight years and received my black belt. The older I've become and the more I've grown, I've realized how impactful martial arts was on me. It strengthened my mind, molded me to have a warrior spirt and a never quit attitude. Martial artist and self defense expert Tony Blauer has a great article called “The Economics of Violence,” which basically states you can't afford to get attacked. What will it cost you to be attacked? The emotional, psychological trauma. Self defense is an absolute necessity in my opinion. The ability to protect your family and loved ones should be taught to everyone, and I feel grateful to have been influenced by Grand Master Amiccuci.David is a 9th degree black belt in Kajukenbo. Kajukenbo was founded in 1947 and some credit it as the first MMA. Kajukenbo is a hybrid martial art that phonetically breaks down as Ka (Karate) Ju (Judo/Jiu-Jitsu) Ken (Kenpo) Bo (Chinese Boxing/Gung-Fu). The originators of Kajukenbo wanted to create a martial art that had the best of all these martial arts. They wanted something that was street effective especially on the dangerous streets of Hawaii. Kajukenbo specializes in neutralizing multiple attackers, disarming people armed with weapons such as clubs, bats, knives, and guns. I can tell you from first hand experience, Kajukenbo works and it is one of the most effective martial arts I have experienced. David specializes in improvised weapons and using his environment as a weapon. David is experienced in unorthodox weapons such as the whip and sjambok. David is especially talented and well versed in knife fighting and knife defense. If you're someone who wants to learn some basic self-defense principles, but don't want to make it an everyday thing, I can't recommend enough David's yawara seminar. David modified the class over the years and the class includes a tactical flashlight. It's one of the best self defense classes I've taken and afterwards you'll learn key principles like body mechanics, awareness, pressure points, throws, and more. Les Kismartoni is a phenomenal competitive shooter.  Just don't give him a hot dog with ketchup on it!  He is from Chicago where good hotdogs have other accessories like pickles, mustard, and relish.  That being said, Les is a Distinguished Master in IDPA and a Grandmaster in USPSA, which means the boy can shoot.  His gun of choice is a Beretta 92 from Langdon Tactical and he shoots both iron and red dot sights.  Like me, he prefers the irons.  Les just won the South Florida Defensive Challenge and explained in this episode how he got started in IDPA which was a challenge living in Chicago.  Also in this episode, Les throws out these nuggets: –Why he still closes one eye while shooting iron sights and why that works. –What he learned training with world champion Eric Grauffel. –What is the best type of pizza to get in Chicago! The Perpetual Chess Book Review Series Chess Books Recaptured  returns to discuss the award winning book, San Luis 2005 by GM Alik Gershon and Igor Nor. San Luis 2005 chronicles a crucial tournament in modern chess history, a double round robin whose winner determined the FIDE World Champion. The tournament featured nearly all of the top players of the time including GM Viswanathan Anand, Judit Polgar, Peter Svidler, and the winner, GM Veselin Topalov. As we discuss, GM Vladimir Kramnik was conspicuously absent, as he was already champion of a competing World Championship Faction that was originally founded by GM Garry Kasparov. Kramnik ultimately played the winner of this tournament in a 2006 Championship reunification match.    My guest co-host is Dr. Christopher Chabris, a renowned author, cognitive scientist and USCF Master. As Christopher and I discuss, it is a beautiful book with lucid prose and great photos and game analysis. The tournament it covers did not have a suspenseful ending, but it did contain some drama in the form of cheating accusations that were lodged against the tournament winner. As we discuss, these unproven accusations have a lot of parallels to the Carlsen-Niemann scandal. We also discuss why tournament books “don't sell” and compare this book to other classic tournament books like Zurich 1953. Lastly, I catch up a bit with Dr. Chabris on his OTB tournament plans, and his forthcoming book  Nobody's Fool: Why we Get Taken in and What we Can do about it. “Black belt, don't think!” Those deep, stern words from the Grandmaster echo across the dojo and ring in my ears like a loudspeaker at full volume. Eight fellow black belts surround me in a circle with weapons in their hands while I have none. We're doing a dynamic circle knife drill exercise where, one by one, they attack and I have to disarm each weapon and take the attacker down while avoiding injury myself. When the exercise begins, I'm full of adrenaline and can feel my heart racing like a race car at the Indy 500. I'm trying to outthink my opponent, contemplating their next move, pre-planning my next move, and overthinking the entire scenario. I'm not trusting myself or my instincts.  While I manage to avoid what would be serious injury on the street, my movements aren't fluid at all! Grandmaster calls me out and starts the exercise over. I take a slow breath and turn around in a circle to look at each of my eight opponents. “Begin!” the Grandmaster orders.  I… close my eyes.  Now that I've removed my sense of sight, I'm relying solely on sound, touch, and trust in myself.  Each black belt yells “Ki-ai” and initiates their attack. I respond and disarm the first one, then the next, and the next. The disarming goes significantly better, and I'm reminded of how powerful the senses are and how harder the others work when you take one away. In this next episode of the “So You Think You Want to Become a Storyteller” master series, I talk about how the five senses can enrich your storytelling. Once again, I have my interviewer extraordinaire (Mark) ask me some tough questions on this topic such as: How do you incorporate the senses into your storytelling and make your stories come alive? Do you even need all five senses, or will just one or two do fine? And can you overuse senses in your stories? What you will learn in this episode: -How you can use the senses to describe anything in a story -What sense tends to get overused and underused by storytellers -How you can use the five senses to evoke specific emotions in your story A little about me: Hi there. I'm Kymberlee. As a Speaking Strategist and founder of Storytelling School, I've had the pleasure of working with over 500 speakers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs worldwide for over a decade. No matter if those folks were getting ready to take the TED or TEDx stage or preparing for a high-stakes presentation with everything on the line, my specialty is High Stakes Short Form Communication. I've seen what works when influencing change and what doesn't. It turns out storytelling is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your arsenal. That's why I'm building a movement of master storytellers to affect change in the world on a global scale to help people tell real stories that have influence and impact. With effective storytelling, you change people's lives. Since competition for potential client attention is fierce, a story can make the difference between being memorable or irrelevant. You'll find me sharing my matcha tea mishap to discuss perfectionism, my quest for Bruce Lee and Hello Kitty art to explore kindness, or the six months of live blade training I underwent to illustrate presence. I spend my days showing the power of using stories to help cement ideas and bring lessons to life and teaching my clients to do the same. If you think business owners can't tell stories or don't have stories to share with their clients, staff, donors, followers, or investors, I invite you to reconsider your perspective. There's no better place than in business to tell your stories so audiences, no matter how big or small, can understand how you think and what you value. Now it's your turn... If you're ready to become a master storyteller and effect change in our world, you've come to the right place. Links and Resources: Storytelling School Website @storytellingschool on Instagram

This week's guest on Perpetual Chess is author, psychology professor and avid chess player, Dr. Joel Sneed. In the professional realm, Joel is a practicing clinical psychologist, and his research focuses on the topics of late life depression and cognitive impairment. A casual chess game with a patient led to Joel's discovery of competitive chess, and since then he has always found time for the game. In addition to co-authoring some excellent chess books, Joel has achieved very unusual gains for an adult learner. Joel began tournament chess at age 33 with a 1200 rating, and at age 48 is rated over 2000! Joel thinks that part of the reason for his success has been his emphasis on the psychological side of chess, as discussed in his latest collaboration with GM Boris Gulko, Analyzing the Chess Mind. The book provides both traditional game analysis from GM Gulko, as well as more general advice about chess psychology from both the GM and the Professor. It was fascinating to hear Joel's story, and there is much to learn from his book and from our conversation! This week we are joined by trainer, author and 6 time New Jersey state chess champion, IM Dean Ippolito. Dean has been an accomplished active player for decades, and a major theme of our conversation is the increasingly unforgiving nature of modern competitive chess.
