This week on Grumpy Old Geeks, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire, starting with follow-up that will make you wonder if the rich are finally getting their comeuppance. It seems Tesla's market share is plummeting, and Elon Musk has been unceremoniously knocked off as the world's wealthiest person. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Microsoft are flirting with new partnership terms, and OpenAI is also reportedly cozying up with Oracle for a cloud computing deal. Are they figuring it all out or just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? You decide. In the news, it's a feast of AI-induced chaos. Anthropic attempted to settle a copyright lawsuit for $1.5 billion, but a judge rejected it. Apple faces scrutiny for allegedly using pirated books to train AI (because who needs original ideas when you can just steal them?), and everyone from Reddit to Yahoo is rushing to get paid for their data being scraped by AI. Google even admits that the open web is struggling, while pushing ads into AI-generated answers and trying to convince us that DOGE never existed. Meanwhile, millions of YouTube videos have been copied by AI companies—because why create when you can just steal? Not to mention, The Boring Company reportedly stopped tunneling after a "crushing injury" (ironic, huh?), Zuckerberg and Palmer Luckey are teaming up again like a disastrous boy band for military-grade goggles, and Meta whistleblowers are exposing child safety issues. Plus, a hot mic caught Zuck groveling to Trump—the cringe is real. And if that wasn't enough, it turns out AI usage is actually declining at big companies, and programmers using AI are creating more security risks than a screen door on a submarine. It's almost like we saw this coming. For your Media Candy fix, get ready for a dose of existential dread. The MTV Video Music Awards are still happening in 2025, with a median viewer age of 56—because nothing screams "youth culture" like osteoporosis. We'll wonder if Wednesday (aka Charlie Sheen) is still winning and discuss Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Amazon Music is launching AI-powered playlists (because who needs a human DJ when you can have an algorithm that thinks it knows your soul?), and Deezer claims 28% of all new music is AI-generated. Taika Waititi is developing a "potentially disastrous" Fyre Fest musical (we're excited!), Foundation is renewed for season 4, and the HBO Max CEO thinks it's "way underpriced"—bless his heart. Plus, more Highlander reboot news that will probably disappoint, and a look at The Missi & Brooke Show and The Traitors Ireland. Finally, in Apps & Doodads, bad news for AirPods Live Translation in the EU, Evernote and WeTransfer's owner is buying Vimeo, and you need this pettable Poké Ball Tamagotchi-style toy. In The Dark Side with Dave, we'll discuss The Princess Bride, how tariffs are ruining hobbies, and who wants "slop for their ears." This episode shows that some things never change, and most things are just getting worse. Dragons sneak their way into many a fantasy world and Magnamund is no different. Though the final dragon saw its final sunrise many ages ago, an army of them now marches towards the Kai Monastery. And yet, August and Jonathan seem to talk about everything except Dragons, with the discussion leading them instead to examine equine abuse, fallen princelings, promotions of Sommlending captains, and a certain fan favorite baroness.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by Hip Hop legend GRANDMASTER FLASH!Y'say... Y'say... Y'say / y'say / y'say (etc) and if you're not carrying that scratch sentence on in your head you have some SERIOUS homework to do. We flashback to the 20-teens to the era of the Beatdown radio show, Pip's XFM show which centred around (but not exclusively) rap and Hip Hop music. Pip had some stone cold legends guesting on there, as you will have heard on some previous flashback episodes, but THIS flashback is the Grandmaster Flashback of all of em. Flash has retained the pure enthusiasm and excitement you would hope for in a DJ and crate digging legend, and enthusiasm which radiates easily and - speaking as a DJ myself (this is producer Buddy typing) - makes me want to just grab an armful of records and hop on the turntables. It's just that pure fun mixed with discovery but entirely fueled by funk and straight up musical greatness. Although as you'll hear, Flash does speak like a true old skool DJ skipping through the 'wack parts' and heading straight to the break. You have to imagine how insanely brilliant that feeling must have been back then, when people just didn't know what these breaks and now classics were, and he even goes into the old trick of hot-watering the labels off and replacing em with dud labels to throw other DJs off the scent. It's hard to retain that mystery these days but back then it was just so different. Anyway - a beautiful snapshot of a truly crucial time in Hip Hop, a part of the genesis of what we know it as now. Whether you like it or acknowledge it or not, this is where it started. Going Pro at 57: `GM Alex Fishbein on How New and Challenging Training Methods Fueled an Upset win at the US Senior Invitational At 57 years old, Tennessee-based Grandmaster and Author, Alex Fishbein, has built an impressive chess résumé, with 12 state-championship titles across four states and multiple appearances in U.S. Championship events. But until recently, his chess had always been balanced with a demanding finance career. Last year, for the first time since age 24, Alex stepped away from Wall Street to devote himself fully to chess—an experiment that paid off quickly. Through a rigorous and unconventional study routine—including his unique “post-postmortem” method—Alex pulled off a surprise victory at the 2025 U.S. Senior Invitational, despite entering as the second-lowest rated player. In our conversation, he reflects on: The training methods that fueled his breakthrough His advice for caring less about ratings The outsized role of age and stamina in senior chess Lessons learned from legends like Korchnoi and Keres Alex's story shows the power of playing actively against all comers, staying curious, and embracing new challenges, and he provides inspiration for chess players of all levels. Isaac Asimov, 1969. Creative Commons Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in New York City on August 10, 1983. Isaac Asimov, who died at the age of 72 in 1992, was considered, along with Ray Bradbury and Robert Heinlein, one of the three great masters of American science fiction in the 20th century. Isaac Asimov began sending in stories and getting published in science fiction magazines at the age of nineteen, and at the age of 21, with the publication of the short story “Nightfall” in John W. Campbell's Astounding Stories magazine. moved into the first ranks of science fiction writers. That status was confirmed a year later with the publication of the short story, “Foundation,” later renamed “The Encyclopedists,” which would be the first of several short stories and novellas republished as the three volumes of the Foundation trilogy. In the 1940s, he turned to a series of stories focused on robots, which became the collection I Robot and then in the 1950s turned to novels, including Pebble in the Sky, The Caves of Steel and The End of Eternity. Along the way, through his entire career, he wrote dozens of non-fiction books on a wide variety of topics, along with young adult novels, and mystery novels and short stories. In the end, the number of books he wrote or edited exceeded 500, not counting separate short stories and articles. This interview was conducted in a New York City bookstore Asimov was visiting to sign copies of a new collection, The Union Club Mysteries, a year after his return to the world of the Foundation trilogy, Foundation's Edge, was published. Because his two –volume autobiography had come out a couple of years earlier and dealt with the plots and themes of his fiction, the interview focused instead on his life as a writer and his work with editors and publishers. A miniseries adaptation of the Foundation Trilogy is now in its third season on Apple+. This podcast was originally posted August 22, 2021. From boasting of a lone International Master (IM) in Manuel Aaron in 1962, India has come a long way in the world of chess, particularly in the last two-and-half decades of the new Millennium. Today, India has 85 Grandmasters, including three women, 23 Woman Grand Masters, 140 International Masters and 42 Woman International Masters while the list of FIDE masters is growing by the day. In the top 10 of any category or age group, Indians figure so prominently that they are second only to the US and China in the men's and women's section respectively. The double-gold at the 2024 Olympiad and India's superb performance in the Candidates added to its growing reputation as a superpower. But if you look from an historic perspective, our champions of today are merely continuing the legacy of a 5,000-year-old tradition which can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization when chess (called Chaturanga then) was, among other things, used for war stimulation. According to legend, Ravan's wife Mandodari taught him Chaturanga so that he could plan battle strategies. Later, Chaturanga became Chatrang in Persian and Shatranj in Arabic before travelling to Spain and the rest of the western world. In the modern era, chess is looked at in different ways. A gymnasium of the mind. A cerebral tug-of-war. For India, Anand can be the best reference point to start any debate involving chess. In fact, Indian chess can be neatly divided into Pre-Anand and Post-Anand eras. The Pre-Anand period was nascent with not many players around, no infrastructure to talk about or any support from the government or the private sector. Indian chess style was one of the many variants of the official chess as recognized by the ruling body FIDE. By the time Anand became India's first Grandmaster in 1987 and triggered the post-Anand era, chess was a rapidly growing sport. Let's look at some figures. Till the start of the new Millennium, India had just three GMs with Dibyendu Barua (1991) and Pravin Thipsay (1997) following in the footsteps of Anand. The first decade of the new century produced 20 GMs and the next 10 a staggering 44. The present decade has already witnessed 16 GMs to take the tally to 85. Her family's bloodline, tracing back to early British royalty, Danish ancestry, and historical figures like Odin and Freya, marked her as a target for exploitation by secret societies, including Masonic and military networks. Unbeknownst to her as a child, this lineage, combined with her innate psychic abilities, would thrust her into a hidden world of ritualistic abuse and mind control programming.Lou's earliest years were shrouded in dissociation, a coping mechanism that veiled her memories until age nine. It was during a live TV appearance on a British talk show, Kilroy, that she first realized she had no recollection of her childhood - a stark revelation that her mind had locked away years of trauma. Raised in South London, Lou's home was a paradox of spiritual allure and dark undercurrents. Her mother, a spiritual channeler, practiced yoga, healing, and automatic writing, influenced by esoteric figures like Steven Jenkins, a Mongolian Buddhist and author, and Andrew Barti, a Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta - who was a frequent visitor to her home and one of her abusers - presenting himself as charitable while orchestrating ritualistic abuse of children behind the scenes. Her father - who was former Merchant Navy, worked at Shirley Oaks Children's home as a maintenance worker and builder, and was a former model with celebrity friends like David Prowse who played Darth Vader in Star Wars. This only added to the complicated family dynamics.Lou's earliest years were shrouded in dissociation, a coping mechanism that veiled her memories until age nine. It was during a live TV appearance on a British talk show, Kilroy, that she first realized she had no recollection of her childhood - a stark revelation that her mind had locked away years of trauma. Her childhood was punctuated by fragmented memories of horrific rituals - being tied up, hung upside down, subjected to electric shocks, and submerged in a cold water tank with a dead body. These experiences, often conducted in underground tunnels and other conspicuous locations, were part of a sophisticated, governmental programming system linked to Masonic lodges and military bases. I am standing in the dojo, drenched in sweat. We're in the middle of a dynamic circle knife drill, and I'm surrounded by fellow black belts, each armed with metal training knives and ready to attack in a simulation of real-life danger - fast, chaotic, and unrelenting. At first, I hold my own, fueled by adrenaline and a strong desire to prove that I can hang with the best. I move quickly, using flashy moves and relying on sheer speed, but as the drill speeds up, my technique falls apart. I'm rushing transitions, missing critical details, and losing confidence. My partners sense the chaos, pressing harder, and I fall further out of my flow. Out of nowhere, my Grandmaster claps his hands and yells, “Stop!” Everyone and everything freezes. He walks over to me and simply says, “Master Kymberlee, go slow to go fast.” Those five words hit me like a punch to the chest. When it's my turn again. I take my place back in the middle of the circle and take a deep breath. The attacks begin and I do the opposite of what I was doing before. I slow down. I breathe. Suddenly, something shifts. My awareness expands. My movements become sharper, more intentional, and ironically, even faster. The disarms land. The flow returns. This specific drill changes everything, and not only how I train; it ultimately changes how I teach, how I move, even how I tell stories! In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll learn what knife fighting taught me about storytelling and why it's important to practice slowing down so that you're having a bigger, more lasting impact on your audience. You'll get answers to questions like: How can slowing down your storytelling method make you a more impactful and memorable storyteller? What are the "slow power" techniques that you can apply to your own storytelling and speaking methods? In what ways can pacing and pauses help build suspense to captivate your audience? What you will learn in this episode: How going slow in storytelling allows the audience to connect on a deeper level Why slowing down signals strength and confidence and commands the audience's attention How practicing storytelling slowly helps build muscle memory so that you can deliver with precision when it matters most A little about me: Hi there. I'm Kymberlee. As a Speaking Strategist and founder of Storytelling School, I've had the pleasure of working with over 500 speakers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs worldwide for over a decade. No matter if those folks were getting ready to take the TED or TEDx stage or preparing for a high-stakes presentation with everything on the line, my specialty is High Stakes Short Form Communication. I've seen what works when influencing change and what doesn't. It turns out storytelling is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your arsenal. That's why I'm building a movement of master storytellers to affect change in the world on a global scale to help people tell real stories that have influence and impact. With effective storytelling, you change people's lives. Since competition for potential client attention is fierce, a story can make the difference between being memorable or irrelevant. You'll find me sharing my matcha tea mishap to discuss perfectionism, my quest for Bruce Lee and Hello Kitty art to explore kindness, or, as I discuss in this episode, the six months of live blade training I underwent to illustrate presence. I spend my days showing the power of using stories to help cement ideas and bring lessons to life and teach my clients to do the same. If you think business owners can't tell stories or don't have stories to share with their clients, staff, donors, followers, or investors, I invite you to reconsider your perspective. There's no better place than in business to tell your stories so audiences, no matter how big or small, can understand how you think and what you value. Now it's your turn... If you're ready to become a master storyteller and effect change in our world, you've come to the right place. GM Alexandr Fier is a 5 time champion of Brazil and 9 time chess Olympian. He also recently qualified for the FIDE World Cup for the 8th time by finishing tied for first at the American Continental tournament. But aside from all of his impressive accomplishments, what interests me most about GM Fier is how frequently he competes. Last year alone, he played nearly 200 classical games,, and he has now travelled to over 50 countries. In our conversation we discussed: How he maintains his energy and positive outlook through a busy tournament calendar Why he thinks playing quickly gives him a competitive advantage. (Hence the nickname “No Fear”) How he reacted to getting some harsh feedback from legendary trainer IM Mark Dvoretsky at age 18. Spring is here and many jurisdictions are having their Sessions, which means electing new Grand Masters who will be traveling around to visit lodges. In response to a listener's question, we discuss the process and protocols involved in a Grand Master's visit. Should you feed the Grand Master? When does he or she get introduced? Where should they sit? When do they speak? Who else gets introduced with the Grand Master? There are a lot of questions to answer and we do our best to get to all of them. The Shoutout goes to yet another new Encampment, Razorback No. 100 of Oregon. That's TEN new Encampments during the five years of this podcast! In the Odd Podge, Ainslie shares his lodge's new mode of transport, Toby shares receiving is 25-year pin for Sons of Norway (and can't resist an impromptu history lesson about the group), and Mike talks about his most recent experience participating in the Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia.

What could you achieve if you let go of all excuses and limiting beliefs? In this deeply motivational episode, Nicole Jansen welcomes Lawrence “Stoney” Stone—a remarkable martial arts grandmaster, published author, stunt coordinator, rock band singer, and cancer survivor whose life story is anything but ordinary. Born with congenital hip problem, later with CMT (Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy) a degenerative nerve disease, Stoney has faced significant physical challenges since birth, yet has refused to let them define or limit him. From building future champions in his dojo to serving as an executive protection consultant, Stoney's impact ripples across countless lives and disciplines. Join us as Stoney opens up about the powerful lessons learned from his “spanking grandma,” and his real-life journey of overcoming adversity with purpose, faith, and fierce love. He shares how mentorship, tough love, a sense of responsibility, and unwavering honesty have fueled his legacy—prompting us all to step up, stop making excuses, and love with conviction. Whether you're searching for inspiration, seeking actionable leadership insights, or grappling with challenges of your own, this conversation will leave you empowered and ready to tackle whatever comes next. What We Discuss in This Episode How did Stoney overcome significant physical limitations to become a martial arts grandmaster and mentor to champions? What role did family and “tough love” play in shaping his unstoppable mindset? How do you guide others—especially young people—out of victimhood and toward responsibility and growth? What does it mean to “not own” your challenges or diagnoses? How can leaders and mentors balance empathy with calling others to greatness? Why is authenticity and emotional expression crucial for true leadership? What does it look like to surrender to purpose and let go of micromanaging your life's plan? How do faith and spirituality underpin resilience and transformation? What lasting advice does Stoney offer for living a meaningful, impactful life? 10 Key Takeaways Lead by Example: Young people and mentees learn most from who you are and what you do—not just what you say or teach. Tough Love Builds Resilience: Support combined with high expectations (“spanking grandma”) pushes us to unprecedented growth. Refuse to “Own” Limitations: Don't take on negative identities around illness or labels—claim victory and move forward. Surround Yourself with Greatness: Your environment and your circle shape your possibilities and determination. Your Challenges Are Your Strength: Facing adversity builds the grit and wisdom necessary to help others. Balance Compassion and Accountability: True mentors love fiercely AND hold people to a higher standard. Embrace Vulnerability: Emotional honesty and caring openly are strengths, not weaknesses, for leaders. Purpose Over Perfection: Focus on finding and fulfilling your unique design rather than achieving flawlessness. Take Responsibility: We must model and teach personal responsibility; excuses perpetuate victimhood and stagnation. Keep Growing and Giving: Growth is a lifelong journey—keep learning, serving, and evolving no matter your stage or circumstances. Favorite Quotes "I've never really relied on or counted on being different. I've never been afraid to stand in front of people and tell them I care. And that makes a difference." — Lawrence Stone "Because I didn't know I was different, because I didn't accept that—I'm just me. I love me. I love what I do. I love who I am, where I am, and why I am." — Lawrence Stone "If I don't believe in me, how can I expect someone else to believe in me? You have to believe in yourself first, no matter what the world says." — Lawrence Stone This episode is a rich tapestry of wisdom, humor, and heart. Tune in—and rediscover what's possible when you stop making excuses and start living your purpose. Purchase Rebel Queen here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/.../9781538757291/... Born to a poor Jewish family in Cold War Budapest, Polgar would emerge as the one of the greatest female chess players the world has ever seen. While still a teenager, she became the first woman to qualify for the men's World Chess Championship cycle. She went on to become the highest rated female chess player on the planet and, at age 21, the first woman to earn the men's Grandmaster title—chess' highest designation. But to get there, she had to endure sexism, anti-Semitism, state-sponsored intimidation, and even violent assault. Throw in sabotage, betrayal, and powerful enemies, and you have a sense of what she went through while breaking chess' glass ceiling. Polgar eventually left Hungary and started a new life as an American citizen. After retiring as a player, she became the only female Division 1 college coach in the country and built two separate college chess dynasties from scratch—at Texas Tech in Lubbock (where she now resides) and Webster University in St. Louis—leading them to more national titles, world championships, major titles, and Olympiad medals, especially gold, than all other college chess teams in the United States combined! Dr. Kenneth Rogoff has undoubtedly had one of the highest-profile and most interesting careers of any Grandmaster working outside of chess. He is an author and Harvard professor who was once singled-out by none other than Bobby Fischer, as a player who had shown remarkable chess improvement. As a young chess star, Dr. Rogoff actually dropped out of high school to move to Europe and pursue chess professionally, but by age 18 he had returned to the U.S. and enrolled at Yale. He would remain active in chess for many more years, but his top priority gradually switched from chess to academics, and he eventually quit chess entirely (save for an exhibition game against Magnus Carlsen in 2012) Dr. Rogoff still loves chess and thinks about it all the time, but economics turned out to be the right decision for him, as he has become a distinguished professor who has worked as the Chief Economist at the World Bank, and has met 8 different U.S. Presidents in his life. His new book, Our Dollar, Your Problem, intersperses occasional lessons from his chess career while providing a modern history of the U.S. dollar as the reserve currency. This interview focuses primarily on Dr. Rogoff's chess career, but those interested in his reflections on the global economy should stay tuned until the end of the interview, and should definitely check out his new book.
