This short overview is reproduced from the Grandmasters of Geopolitics Telegram channel, with thanks. From his student days onwards, Ayatollah Khamenei's life story was interwoven with the history of modern Iran. In the 1960s and 70s, Ali Khamenei was arrested six times by the shah's secret police, Savak, enduring torture and internal exile. These years of underground resistance solidified his revolutionary credentials. Meanwhile, his experience on the frontlines of the US-backed 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war strengthened his antipathy and mistrust towards US imperialism. ------------------------------------------------ Subscribe! Episode 450 | Interview with Grandmaster Park (GMP) Podcast Description Episode 450 is a sit-down conversation with Grandmaster Park (GMP) — a longtime friend of the show and someone who's helped shape the modern martial arts school industry. We go back to the “old days” when billing companies took a painful cut just to collect tuition, and we talk about how the industry has changed — not just in technology, but in parent expectations, communication, staff culture, and what it takes to build something that lasts. Along the way, GMP shares a few simple (but powerful) mindset shifts: how to stop letting “scorpions” steal your peace, why COVID was a reset button for the industry, how to train staff like you train students, and why school owners have to start thinking about retirement and exit plans like real entrepreneurs. We also dig into AI — not as a gimmick, but as a tool that rewards school owners who learn how to ask better questions, document their story, and build systems faster than ever. Key Takeaways The industry used to pay a “tuition tax” — and most owners don't realize how far we've come.Back in the day, schools were heavily dependent on billing companies to collect tuition, and the fees could be brutal. The bigger point: when you've lived in a new normal long enough, you forget how much friction you used to tolerate. Parents don't automatically trust the instructor the way they used to — so communication has to evolve. What worked 20–30 years ago (“Just do this at home and they'll do better in class”) doesn't always land today. The message still matters, but the delivery has to be clearer, more intentional, and more repeatable. Not everything is controllable — and the scorpion story is a gut-check for school owners.GMP shares the classic “scorpion and the frog” story: some people sting because it's in their nature. The lesson isn't to become cynical — it's to stop being surprised, protect your energy, and choose your circle wisely. COVID was a reset button — and the schools that survived often leveled up.GMP's take is blunt: a shakeout happened. Some schools closed that didn't deserve it, but many that survived did so because they had a real foundation, real systems, and the discipline to prepare for “winter.” If you're living tuition-to-tuition as a business owner, something is off.GMP challenges the idea that entrepreneurship should feel like paycheck-to-paycheck. He points to basic discipline: track spending, cut the leaks, and start investing for the future. Compound interest is the “eighth wonder of the world” — but only if you actually use it.The conversation hits on index funds (like the S&P 500), performance-based investing vs. cash sitting idle, and simple retirement vehicles (like a SIMPLE IRA) that can help owners and staff build long-term stability. Train your staff the same way you train your students: white belt to black belt. One of the biggest paradigm shifts in the episode: school owners already know how to build a curriculum that takes a beginner to black belt — but they don't apply that same thinking to staff. GMP's challenge: build a staff playbook and training path with clear expectations, checkpoints, and “retests.” If a student doesn't know the form, they don't move on. Staff training should work the same way. Some “student problems” are actually teaching mistakes. The left/right example is a perfect reminder: if the student can't process the instruction, the teacher has to change the approach. Color patches. Better cues. Different framing. The responsibility is to keep improving the delivery. Failure isn't the enemy — but you have to teach the culture around it.GMP and Allie talk about how Eastern philosophy treats failure as part of success, while many parents/students hear “failure” as “you are a failure.” Clear guidelines, expectations, and the way you deliver feedback matters. AI rewards the owner who learns how to ask better questions.GMP calls AI a new gold rush. The shift is from hunting for answers to learning how to prompt well. Start simple. Talk to it. Use voice mode. Feed it your story and your values — then let it help you build systems, onboarding, curriculum, and communication faster. Exit planning is coming to martial arts — whether owners are ready or not.GMP points out that private equity is paying attention to children's activity businesses (including martial arts). That makes “exit” a real conversation — but it starts with getting your house in order. Action Steps for School Owners Do a quick “leak audit” this week.Pick one recurring expense you've normalized (subscriptions, food runs, convenience spending) and calculate what it costs per month. Decide what you're keeping, what you're cutting, and what you're redirecting into savings/investing. Create a “Close the Dojo” shutdown routine — but for your finances.Set a weekly 15-minute money check-in: revenue, expenses, cash on hand, and one action to improve next week. Build a staff curriculum outline (one page is enough to start).Write the stages of staff development like belts: New hire (white belt): basics + values + front desk standards Assistant instructor: class support + parent communication Lead instructor: full class ownership + retention responsibilities Manager: systems + team leadership Add “retests” to your staff training.Pick one skill that keeps breaking (phone scripts, intro tours, enrollment conversations, attendance follow-up). Create a simple checklist and re-train until it's consistent. Fix one teaching mistake you keep repeating. If you keep saying the same thing and getting the same blank stares, change the cue. Change the visual. Change the framing. Don't keep “punching the same wall.” Start using AI daily for one small business task.Don't overcomplicate it. Pick one: Draft a parent email Create an onboarding checklist Write a staff training outline Brainstorm a retention campaign The goal is reps — not perfection. Write down your “exit plan” in one paragraph.Even if it's messy. Do you want to sell? License? Hand it to a team member? Reduce teaching hours? The point is to stop pretending you'll “figure it out later.” Additional Resources Mentioned Index funds / S&P 500 (as an example of performance-based investing) SIMPLE IRA (as an example of a retirement vehicle for small businesses) PCP (Praise–Correct–Praise) and positive reframing/deflection as communication tools Note: A book by Tony Graff is mentioned in the conversation, but the exact title wasn't confirmed in the transcript.
Ben and Tumaini get back together at their kitchen table in Paris, discussing events of Rome, where the biggest story was Jannik Sinner making ATP history. We discuss the enormity of Jannik Sinner having won all nine Masters 1000 events, and how the ATP's term for it is deeply suboptimal. It's not the most suspenseful tour right now, but it's impressive. We also discuss the far more unpredictable women's field, including champion Elina Svitolina as well as Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Sorana Cirstea, and more. We also discuss boycott talk (we don't think it's plausible but it's still notable), and the Italian Federation's stated goal of making Rome into the official "Fifth Slam." Thank you for listening! It's Marvel Monday and Thor gets a colorful cosmic makeover! ABOUT THOR: RAGNAROK Imprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR THOR: RAGNAROK 2017 | Theatrical Release CAST & CREW OF THOR: RAGNAROK Director: Taika Waititi Writers: Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost Cast: Chris Hemsworth as Thor Tom Hiddleston as Loki Cate Blanchett as Hela Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk Anthony Hopkins as Odin Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS Two years after the Sokovia situation, Thor finds himself captured by a fire demon, who ominously reveals that Odin is no longer in Asgard—and that the realm's destruction, which he calls Ragnarök, is inevitable. The demon claims it will only occur when his crown is reunited with the Eternal Flame. Thor is like ok cool, then he breaks free, defeats the demon, and takes the crown, convinced he's just saved Asgard from its fate. Back home, things are… off. Idris Elba is missing, and “Odin” is acting suspiciously theatrical, literally have plays put on about the story of Thor and Loki and Asgard. Shocker, it's actually Loki in disguise. Thor forces Loki to come clean, and with help from Doctor Strange, they track down the real Odin in Norway. There, Odin reveals the truth: he's dying, and his passing will unleash Hela, his long-hidden firstborn daughter. Once the ruthless leader of Asgard's armies, Hela was erased from history when her hunger for power became too much—even for Odin. Odin dies. Hela arrives. And within minutes, she destorys thor's hammer like it's nothing. Loki is like UH OH BRING US BACK which opens the portal to get them home. But Hela hops in and knocks them out of the portal into space. She returns to Asgard, quickly conquers it, kills people, and does alot of bad stuff. Meanwhile, Thor crash-lands on Sakaar—a chaotic junk planet ruled by the eccentric Grandmaster. Captured and enslaved by a scrapper known as 142 (who actually used to be Valkyrie), Thor is forced into gladiator combat… where he comes face-to-face with none other than Hulk. Thor nearly wins using newfound lightning powers, but the Grandmaster rigs the fight, keeping Hulk his champion. Still in jail, Thor tries to rally Hulk and Valkyrie to help save Asgard, but neither is interested—until a series of events, including a recording from Natasha Romanoff, brings Bruce Banner back. Valkyrie finally agrees to help, and with Loki involved, they steal a ship, spark a gladiator uprising and make their escape. Back on Asgard, Hela's forces are closing in on the remaining citizens. It's not looking good.. Thor shows up to confronts Hela but realizes the truth: she's too powerful to defeat. After losing his eye in battle, Thor has a vision of Odin that changes everything—Ragnarök isn't something to prevent… it's the only way to stop Hela. Thor makes sure to fulfill the prophecy—destroying Asgard and killing Hela in the process. With their home gone but their people alive, Thor—now king—leads the Asgardians aboard a stolen ship, finally reconciling with Loki and setting a course for Earth… only to be interrupted by a massive, looming spacecraft waiting in their path. Andre Norton is one of the pivotal figures in the history of science fiction and fantasy and remains eminently relevant for modern readers. She was a prolific writer, authoring more than 300 titles spanning a career from the 1930s to the 2000s. She was one of the earliest writers to create stories of a post-nuclear apocalyptic dystopia and works of post-humanism yet kept a thread of hope and optimism. In her lifetime, Andre Norton was recognized by her readers and her peers as a towering figure, receiving a World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement and being named a Grandmaster by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association among other accolades. She was also the first writer to be invited to contribute to the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Sales of Norton's work in her lifetime rivalled George R. R. Martin, Arthur C. Clarke, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. And yet, Andre Norton has become somewhat obscure, an unsung Ohio writer who flourished during her lifetime and deserves renewed attention. Today's podcast episode will hopefully entice you to delve into her work and to help fulfill her final words: “I just don't want to be forgotten.” Don Boozer, Coordinator of the Ohio Center for the Book and Manager of the Literature Department at Cleveland Public Library, hosts this episode. He's joined by Dr. Jeff Karem, a Professor of English at Cleveland State University, to illuminate the life and work and Andre Norton. Dr. Karem received his Ph.D. from Yale University, and his research and teaching focus on exploring the contributions of diverse regional and ethnic writers and works on 20th century American Literature. To view photographs and documents relating to Norton, see this episode's accompanying blog post, “The Imaginative History of Andre Norton.” Page Count is produced by Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library. Chris opens up about his 40-year journey in Taekwondo, revealing how a volatile and traumatic childhood led him to seek protection, discipline, and ultimately, a lifelong identity. From overcoming devastating injuries to evolving his philosophy on leadership, Chris shares how the "slight shifts" in his mindset helped him transition from a young student to a Grandmaster in Taekwondo and a serial entrepreneur. Key Advice & Takeaways Seek Knowledge, Not Status: True mastery isn't about the title or rank. It's about the depth of your understanding. Shift your focus from gaining power to increasing your expertise. Earn the Right to Lead: Avoid "imposter syndrome" by outworking your own expectations. Leadership is earned by being an example and practicing what you preach every day. Humility Increases with Rank: The higher you go in any field, the more humble you should become. A great leader is never "above" any task, including the smallest chores. Train for Longevity: Respect your body's limits. Shift from training for the "moment" to training for lifelong health and mobility. Prepare Your Mind: Opportunities often fall into your lap when you are mentally prepared to receive them.
Poul Anderson (1926-2001), noted science fiction and fantasy author, winner of seven Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards, in conversation with the late Lawrence Davidson, recorded for the Probabilities radio program on KPFA on June 10, 1978. The late Poul Anderson, who died on July 31, 2001 at the age of 74, is considered one of the greatest science fiction and fantasy authors of the twentieth century. He even has an asteroid named in his honor. Known for his hard science writing, in particular his Polysotechnic League series as well as his Landry series and his Time Patrol series, he was also a master of fantasy. There were also historical novels and mysteries. His career began in 1947 at the age of 21 with stories in Astounding Science Fiction, and he became a professional writer a year later. One of his novels became a film, the Hugo nominated novel, The High Crusade, in 1994 about an alien spaceship landing in medieval England. It is currently not streaming in the United States though if you search, you can find a DVD copy. As with many of the writers of the pulp and paperback era, Poul Anderson is ripe for rediscovery. After Probabilities got its start in 1977, it was natural that the Orinda-based writer would become a guest on the show, though his libertarian politics put him at odds with much of the KPFA audience. This conversation with co-host Lawrence Davidson, recorded June 10, 1978, was likely Davidson's very first solo interview and came before the show's focus turned to the history of modern science fiction. For some unfathomable reason, Lawrence seemed to keep turning the focus to Anderson's politics, to which the writer finally explained, a little exasperated, that he was basically a story-teller. The interview was digitized, remastered and edited on February 22, 2026, using the Adobe Podcast app to remove noise and echo. . This week, Alex is joined by the "Mr. Worldwide" of Marvel Snap: Dara! They kick things off with a life update, discussing Dara's move from NYC to Australia and now Thailand, living the $3 Bolt ride life while navigating a 12-hour time difference. They dive straight into the Star-Lord Season Pass review. While Alex thinks it's a solid 4-Star card, Dara drops a massive hot take: Star-Lord might be better than Shou-Lao due to his insane synergy with Fin Fang Foom and Grandmaster. Then, they roast the Super Premium card, Magus, agreeing it is "Toxic Doxy" levels of bad and a hard skip (1 Star). They also review Moon Dragon, deciding it's a "Doom 2099" dependent card that falls flat if not played on Turn 2. On the flip side, Dara claims Drax (Avatar of Life) is the best non-Season Pass card of the month, praising its ability to counter Ramp decks. Finally, they open the Mailbag to discuss a wholesome community letter and debate a spicy game design question: Should Marvel Snap introduce a 5-Turn Game Mode to create a true Aggro meta? Plus, a heavy dose of nostalgia as they reminisce about Warcraft III tower rushes and the "Golden Era" of Blizzard.Join Alex Coccia and special guest Dara as they chat about this and more on this episode of The Snap Chat—and catch Cozy and Alex every week as they discuss all things Marvel Snap.Have a question or comment for Cozy and Alex? Twelve years ago, the Hammersmith Chess Club in London was down to fewer than 20 members and facing an uncertain future. Today, thanks to committed volunteers, a welcoming culture, and the broader boom in chess, it's the largest chess club in London, and was recently named ECF Chess Club of the Year. I'm joined by Hammersmith Club Captain Gaston Franco to discuss the club's remarkable turnaround and what other communities can learn from it. We cover topics like financial sustainability, league play, and gender dynamics, as well as the importance of creating an inclusive, welcoming environment. We also explore Gaston's own chess journey, which highlights one of the game's great strengths: its ability to provide instant community, especially when moving alone to a new country. In this episode, we explore the powerful metaphor of Life as a Chess Game, where every decision—big or small—sends a ripple effect across the board, impacting not just our position, but the lives of everyone around us. We discuss the lag time of karma (why results often take time to manifest), the importance of foresight, and the ultimate question: Are your moves setting up a game of connection and victory for all, or are you unwittingly sacrificing the pieces that matter most? Join us to learn how to become a Grandmaster of kindness and intent. New Episode of the Happiness Podcast with Dr. Robert Puff, Ph.D.

This week's guest is U.S. Chess Hall of Famer GM Maurice Ashley. Maurice will forever be known as the first African American to earn the Grandmaster title, yet he has gone on to build a varied and distinguished career across all facets of the game. He is a popular author and highly regarded Chessable creator, a teacher, an organizer, and a frequent commentator for major chess events, often from the St. Louis Chess Club. This week on Grumpy Old Geeks, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire, starting with follow-up that will make you wonder if the rich are finally getting their comeuppance. It seems Tesla's market share is plummeting, and Elon Musk has been unceremoniously knocked off as the world's wealthiest person. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Microsoft are flirting with new partnership terms, and OpenAI is also reportedly cozying up with Oracle for a cloud computing deal. Are they figuring it all out or just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? You decide. In the news, it's a feast of AI-induced chaos. Anthropic attempted to settle a copyright lawsuit for $1.5 billion, but a judge rejected it. Apple faces scrutiny for allegedly using pirated books to train AI (because who needs original ideas when you can just steal them?), and everyone from Reddit to Yahoo is rushing to get paid for their data being scraped by AI. Google even admits that the open web is struggling, while pushing ads into AI-generated answers and trying to convince us that DOGE never existed. Meanwhile, millions of YouTube videos have been copied by AI companies—because why create when you can just steal? Not to mention, The Boring Company reportedly stopped tunneling after a "crushing injury" (ironic, huh?), Zuckerberg and Palmer Luckey are teaming up again like a disastrous boy band for military-grade goggles, and Meta whistleblowers are exposing child safety issues. Plus, a hot mic caught Zuck groveling to Trump—the cringe is real. And if that wasn't enough, it turns out AI usage is actually declining at big companies, and programmers using AI are creating more security risks than a screen door on a submarine. It's almost like we saw this coming. For your Media Candy fix, get ready for a dose of existential dread. The MTV Video Music Awards are still happening in 2025, with a median viewer age of 56—because nothing screams "youth culture" like osteoporosis. We'll wonder if Wednesday (aka Charlie Sheen) is still winning and discuss Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Amazon Music is launching AI-powered playlists (because who needs a human DJ when you can have an algorithm that thinks it knows your soul?), and Deezer claims 28% of all new music is AI-generated. Taika Waititi is developing a "potentially disastrous" Fyre Fest musical (we're excited!), Foundation is renewed for season 4, and the HBO Max CEO thinks it's "way underpriced"—bless his heart. Plus, more Highlander reboot news that will probably disappoint, and a look at The Missi & Brooke Show and The Traitors Ireland. Finally, in Apps & Doodads, bad news for AirPods Live Translation in the EU, Evernote and WeTransfer's owner is buying Vimeo, and you need this pettable Poké Ball Tamagotchi-style toy. In The Dark Side with Dave, we'll discuss The Princess Bride, how tariffs are ruining hobbies, and who wants "slop for their ears." This episode shows that some things never change, and most things are just getting worse.
