Today's poem is one of the few enduring works of a poet and playwright who burned brightly during his heyday and then blinked out almost entirely. Happy reading.Leigh, son of James Mathews Leigh, was born in London on 29 March 1837. At an early age he engaged in literary pursuits. From time to time appeared collections of his lyrics, under the titles of Carols of Cockayne, 1869 (several editions); Gillott and Goosequill, 1871; A Town Garland: a Collection of Lyrics, 1878; and Strains from the Strand: Trifles in Verse, 1882. His verse was always fluent, but otherwise of very slender merit. For the stage he translated many French comic operas. His first theatrical essay was in collaboration with Charles Millward in a musical spectacle for the Theatre Royal in Birmingham. His ‘Falsacappa,' music by Offenbach, was produced at the Globe Theatre on 22 April 1871; ‘Le Roi Carotte' at the Alhambra on 3 June 1872; ‘Bridge of Sighs,' opera-bouffe, at the St. James's, 18 Nov. 1872; ‘White Cat,' a fairy spectacle, at the Queen's, Long Acre, on 2 Dec. 1875; ‘Voyage dans la Lune,' opera-bouffe, at the Alhambra, on 15 April 1876; ‘Fatinitza,' opera-bouffe (the words were printed), adapted from the German, at the Alhambra on 20 June 1878; ‘The Great Casimir,' a vaudeville, at the Gaiety, on 27 Sept. 1879; ‘Cinderella,' an opera, with music by J. Farmer, at St. James's Hall, on 2 May 1884 (the words were published in 1882); ‘The Brigands,' by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy, adapted to English words by Leigh, was printed in 1884. For ‘Lurette,' a comic opera, Avenue, 24 March 1883, he wrote the lyrics; and with Robert Reece he produced ‘La Petite Mademoiselle,' comic opera, Alhambra, on 6 October 1879. He edited ‘Jeux d'Esprit written and spoken by French and English Wits and Humorists,' in 1877, and wrote Mark Twain's ‘Nightmares' in 1878.His last theatrical venture—a complete failure—was ‘The Prince Methusalem,' a comic opera, brought out at the Folies Dramatiques (now the Kingsway), Great Queen Street, London, on 19 May 1883. He was a Spanish, Portuguese, and French scholar, a brilliant and witty conversationalist, and a humorous singer. He died in his rooms in Lowther's private hotel, 35 Strand, London, on 16 June 1883, and was buried in Brompton cemetery on 22 June.-bio via Wikipedia This is a public episode. In today's episode of the Live UNREAL Podcast, we're bringing you a live segment from Jeff's recent Glover U event, where he spoke with top agent Laura Gillot. Laura is from the small town of Lebanon, Oregon, so she understands the importance of loving on your database and being service oriented. Last year, Laura maintained a market share of 24% in her area! That's not easy to do, even in a small town, so how does she do it? According to Laura, it all comes down to engaging her database. When the population isn't so large, every database member counts. To help engage with these people, Laura's team hosted 39 events last year. In this episode, we'll discuss how she hosted these events, the strategy behind them, and how she capitalizes on every database member. We also discussed: The difference between client and community events The importance of engaging your database Caring and loving for your team Key Points 1. As a team leader in a small town, Laura understands the importance of engaging your database. Every person counts, and word of mouth counts more than ever. As a result, she relies on plenty of events to keep her people engaged. 2. Asking someone for a referral straight up can be awkward, but it's important. Referral business is much more reliable than random leads. 3. Whether you're a member of a team or a leader, you need to understand how critical it is to work together and care for each other. Part of Laura's success comes from how she is able to get the best out of her team members. 4. By working with us, Laura and her team are able to focus on money-making activities. Now, she is much more engaged with her team. According to Jeff, you should never be surprised by why someone decides to leave your team; you should always know what's going on.

Joining the co-hosts are Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, a London physician active in the fight against COVID; John Gillott, a British sociologist of science and author of Bioscience, Governance and Politics; and Ravi Bali of Marxist-Humanist Initiative. They discuss governmental efforts to contain the pandemic, the backlash against these efforts—often justified by invocations of “freedom”––in the United Kingdom as well as the United States, and how opponents of containment efforts have spread misinformation. Some of the discussion focuses on recent articles, by Fitzpatrick and by Gillott, which criticize the “lockdown-skeptical” line taken by Spiked, a British online publication that emerged out of the revolutionary left. In the discussion, reference is also made to the Great Barrington Declaration and to Amanda Marcotte’s article, “The NRA way of life is ruining our nation.” In the episode’s current-events segment, Brendan and Andrew discuss Georgia’s new voter-suppression law and the fightback against it. Today’s episode features an interview between Matt Trifiro and Iain Gillott, founder and president of iGR market strategy consultancy.Iain is a leading wireless and mobile industry analyst, and since 2000, has run iGR, a market strategy consultancy focused on the wireless and mobile communications industry. In this interview, Iain discusses the many challenges and intersections between wireless, mobile, and edge computing, his views on where the telco operators will fit into edge, the role CBRS will play, and much more.Key Quotes"Problem number one is people don't realize how much edge is actually out there. A lot of people think, ‘to do edge computing, I’ve got to wait for 5G. There'll be no edge until there's 5G.’ But some of the very first edge compute was put in with ethernet wired connections…The second problem is that everybody has a different definition of the edge. My definition of the edge is if you take one more step, you fall off a cliff. That’s the easy one.""The perceived value of edge compute in the mobile network is with the cloud vendor, not with the mobile operator, and I think that's a problem. It doesn't mean they're not needed. The mobile operators are needed, but from a mobile operator perspective, their customer is the cloud vendor. It is not the enterprise or the end-user…In this respect, I hate to say it, but they are being pushed into an edge bit-pipe relationship where they're going to rely on the cloud guys to deliver that business to them.""When we've seen things take off in technology, they're one of two things: They're either huge volume, mass market, low cost. Or they're very specific, super high requirements, and expensive. It takes a while to build the middle ground.""The operator will tell you it's the connection that's the value. The application developer says it's the application. The edge compute guy says it’s the servers. But the whole solution is the application, some compute, and connectivity. But the CIO looks at the entire solution. The answer is we need all three.""I think the problem with edge compute is, it's very difficult to pick winners and losers right now. Some operators are going to be successful with their strategy and others will not even be involved. So picking winners and losers is difficult.""I think people who've got a very rigid view of ‘the edge is here, and I'm going to do this and sell it to these people,’ that's a problem. You've got to be much more fluid and say, ‘to this customer, the edge is over there, for this customer, the edge is over here, and for this customer, it's actually completely different.’ You’ve got to be really fluid and flexible, probably like we haven't been before as an industry. And I think this is why the operators will have a problem because they're not flexible."SponsorsOver the Edge is brought to you by the generous sponsorship of Catchpoint, NetFoundry, Ori Industries, Packet, Seagate, Vapor IO, and Zenlayer. The featured sponsor of this episode of Over the Edge is Ori Industries. In the inaugural episode of the Coach Developer Conversations podcast series, UK Coaching's Coaching Manager Andy Bradshaw explores the theme of observing coaches in action with Senior Coach Developer at UK Sport Andrew Gillott. Where does that action start? Is it in the act of coaching athletes? Is it the setup? The preparation? Andrew highlights the value of flexibility, of having a number of tools available (in language, approach, focus) and waiting to see which are most appropriate to use. Looking at the specifics of observation, Andrew explains what that means to a coach developer, what's going on with him throughout an observation, and why. Whatever your role, if you're helping people to be active and improve, we're here for you. Visit UKCoaching.org to grow your coaching skills and be part of the community.

What to Say During a Crisis with Eden Gillott When you’re dealing with drama and you want to know what to do and what to say, Eden Gillott is the person to go to. She has been the President of Gillott Communications, a crisis PR firm, for over 11 years. She chats with Tom Fox about what a company should say in a crisis situation, how to prepare for a crisis in advance, and common mistakes to avoid. What to Say During a CrisisEden defines a crisis as anything that threatens your reputation in a way that will interrupt your business. Whenever there is a crisis incident, especially one that involves loss of life, your company should express sorrow and empathy, and should never make light of the fact that people have lost their lives. You should also think about your key message and goals: ideally, your strategy should include your short-term reaction, but also consider the long-term impact of your actions. How To Prepare For a Crisis While you can never predict a crisis, there are ways to prepare in advance. Think of the things most likely to happen in your industry. Crisis in the food industry, for example, can include recall and contamination. If something were to happen, how would you respond? A good strategy is to have a placeholder statement you can use as an immediate response that tells everyone you're taking care of the situation, you're looking into it and will get back to them as soon as possible. This placeholder statement buys you time while you gather the facts. The last thing you want to do during a crisis is rush out with misinformation, Eden warns. It can make an already bad situation even worse. Common Mistakes to AvoidDuring a crisis, you should avoid these common mistakes:Lack of communication - Be as transparent as possible. Make sure everyone has the facts needed to make an educated decision.“ It's not my job.” - When there's a crisis, it's everyone's job.“ It's too small to be noticed.” - A crisis can become worse if you ignore it.It's a good idea to have a protocol in place so if a crisis occurs you have a framework to follow. Advice About Social MediaTom comments that social media has amplified messages, which can be catastrophic in a crisis. Eden advises how companies can use social media during a crisis. Social media posts can also precipitate a crisis. She admonishes, think before you post! Lying is an Absolute No-No!Eden says that there are two absolute no-no’s in crisis PR, and lying is one of them. Lying will always come back to bite you: your credibility will spiral down and the reputation you spent years building will be tarnished. If you’re caught as a liar, people will never believe anything you say in the future. ResourcesGillott Communications Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Can a real estate agent work by referral and still serve a lot families? There is a myth that in order to scale up a business, you have to pursue cold leads. One couldn't possibly have a big enough sphere to to serve hundreds of families with their real estate needs each year. And even if they did know that many, how could they possibly give them enough attention for it to turn into business? My guest, Laura Gillott, helps to bust these myths and show a model by which she served 526 families in 2018... 80% by referral!
Andrew Gillott describes himself as a Coach Developer. I would describe him as a genius learning architect. Andrew has been instrumental in leading and creating opportunities for coaches to learn and develop and his passion for learning and development has meant that he has led some of the most innovative and creative programmes of development for coaches up and down the UK talent system. In this conversation we explore the inevitable 'drills v games' debate, how he uses an ecological approach to help coaches to appreciate their effect on athletes and why context is important when understanding the behaviour of coaches. Hope you enjoy

Joining Charles Adrian in Amersham for the 117th Second-Hand Book Factory is his mother Rae Bentley Jones (aka Rae Gillott). They talk a basketmaker’s life, detective fiction and some world history. Episode image is a detail from the cover of Indemnity Only by Sara Paretsky, published in 1987 by Penguin Books; cover design: blacksheep. More information, including book listing, at http://www.pageonepodcast.com/

This is the very tip of the first, green shoot to grow out of the freshly turned soil that is Muselings. It's just a test. You can find out more about the podcast at muselings.uk.
This is not a Page One but it is a podcast episode. It's a preview of the first episode of a new series of podcasts called Muselings. All the episodes in this first series (at least) are going to be short, true and about podcaster Charles Adrian. This episode is about shyness and knocking on people's doors. More information about the podcast is at muselings.uk.
This is the first episode of a solipsistic new podcast series centering on podcaster Charles Adrian. This week, he talks about shyness and knocking on people's doors. You can find out more about the podcast at muselings.uk.
With a clock ticking implacably in the background, Charles Adrian meets mother, mobile artist and edible gardener Viviana Rossi-Cafell for the 76th Second-Hand Book Factory. They talk about the transformative effect of gardening, a warm feeling of friendship and a feeling that comes just before crying. Italian is spoken in this episode, both well and badly. You can see some of Viviana’s work here.
For the 101st Page One (which, as listeners of Page One 100 will know, is actually the 102nd episode of the podcast), Charles Adrian talks about the five novels he would take with him to a desert island, if he were forced to go. And allowed to take books. These books are essential. And long. (Here, by the way, is Charles Adrian talking about The Folding Star on Steve Wasserman’s podcast Read Me Something You Love)
For the 100th Page One (which, as Charles Adrian explains, is actually the 101st edition of the podcast), we are given a brainload of statistics. How many pages have been read in how many languages by how many people etc. If these and other questions have been exercising your attention, this episode is for you. Charles Adrian also shares something of his own (also to be found here) and he plays some funny music and some beautiful music.
“You are the music while the music lasts.” For the 75th Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by pianist and Korean-American mutt SooJin Anjou to discuss the need for contradiction and art that contains the world (no small ambition). This will be the last of these Second-Hand Book Factories for a while so, in Groucho’s words, please hug yourselves for me. [On the question of classical music on the podcast, a clarification: of course, while I was editing this, I remembered that I played some Schubert for Ted Schmitz as part of the 30th Page One, which you can find here.]
A special vintage edition of Page One this week as Charles Adrian is joined by his little sister Lissa for the 28th Second-Hand Book Factory. Between sips of tea and mouthfuls of cake at the Chiswick House Café, they discuss their suspicion of people who haven’t read Harry Potter, their shared appreciation for the playfulness of Jasper Fforde and opium. Incidentally, Harry Potter fans might want to read this.
For the 74th Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by playwright, performer and accidental sex-positivity educator, advocate and activist Cameryn Moore. They talk about the level of detail in some rich historical fantasy, some of the advantages of a really big tea cup and the realisation that people write creatively about their food experiences. [Note: apologies for the phone that buzzes at 5:50; this is the result of a schoolboy error on the part of the podcaster.]
For the 73rd Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian talks to comedian, writer, promoter and human organism Barry Ferns about the effect of parental care on infants, how to get more time at home and an intense but life-affirming account of some difficult experiences. Find out more about Barry at barryferns.com.
For the 72nd Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined in Zürich by Englishman Will Ellis (and, almost inaudibly, by his wife Agnes) to talk about a couple of confident explorers and whether or not Will speaks Spanish.
Another of the vintage episodes from Page One’s London Fields Radio days, this is the very first outside recording done for Page One and, while the sound quality is poor - it’s what might be called an atmospheric recording, if you were being very generous – the books and conversation make up for any aural discomfort. Hopefully. Charles Adrian’s guest here is singer and self-confessed Gilligan avatar Ted Schmitz, who, like Charles Adrian, is a member of the Berlin-based theatre ensemble Nico And The Navigators.
For the 71st Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by anthropologist and human Karin Eli for talk about the fight to gain one’s place in the world, a little bit of undemanding murder and some of the challenges of translation.
Charles Adrian is joined for the 70th Second-Hand Book Factory by failed mathematician and failed actuary Colin Bartlett. They talk about semi-autobiography, Duke Ellington, clouds and one of the best books of the 20th century. [The Vera mentioned is, of course, Vera Chok, whose latest Page One is here.]
For the 69th Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined at the Festival Hall in London by Tom Bowtell, who describes himself as a writer, actor, director and maker of adventures (and you should look up some of the things he does with his company here). Their discussion covers bold beginnings, the riches to be found in random facts and bird jizz (entirely SFW, by the way).
For the 68th Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by radio producer, carer, stand-up comic and empath Lolie Ware. They discuss the introduction of the elbow, unsuitable jobs for women and the importance of paper maps in an age of smart phones. (addendum: P. D. James died a week after this podcast was recorded. You can read an obituary here.)
Richard Purnell, a man who likes to take the truth for a walk, joins Charles Adrian for the 67th Second-Hand Book Factory. They talk about the comedy to be found in the detail, the morality of converts and a rare German book in translation. More about Richard here.
Opening another season of Page One, Charles Adrian is joined by long-time collaborator Vera Chok to talk about reproduction, the ‘discovery’ of the clitoris and sex as prose poetry. Incidentally, Charles Adrian talks a certain amount of rubbish about the discovery of the clitoris and the controversy surrounding female souls as well as about the history and use of syllogisms; please click links for more accurate information.
This week’s vintage Page One, which originally went out in October 2012, sees Charles Adrian talking to comedian Tom Webb. There is a curious lack of books in this episode but Tom and host Charles Adrian have fun discussing facebook, Scott Capurro and The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart. Incidentally – in case you are looking for connections – the last track is from the album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars and spiders build webs. It’s embarrassing, but there it is. You can follow Charles Adrian on twitter @charldrian. Tom and Charles Adrian both have shows to plug at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2014. Information about Tom and his shows is here. Information about Charles Adrian and his show is here.
For the 65th Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by performance artist, writer and musician Nick Field. It may have been a tactical error to sit outside, at a café not far from Victoria station in London, where the background noise from taxis, buses and other voices threatens to overwhelm the conversation at times. Oh, and you will hear the microphone summersault off its improvised mic stand at one point. It is nearly the summer holidays for Page One; everythings is falling apart. But the episode is still worth listening to. Promise. Nick’s music, incidentally, can be found online here.
Hosting Charles Adrian for the 64th Second-Hand Book Factory in her Motel de Nowhere in Bethnal Green is artist and performer Susannah Hewlett. They talk about the effect of abuse in different ways and the push to create nicknames. Information about Motel de Nowhere is here. and you can find out more about Chris Titmas here.
For the 63rd Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by writer and sometime academic Alan Cunningham. They talk about precision in the face of horror, the creation of fear and just plain good storytelling. Oh, and get ready to sit back and chill out at the end of the episode for nearly ten minutes of gentle bliss. You can listen to Alan talking to Charles Adrian about his own book, Count From Zero To One Hundred, here.
Shorter than usual, for good reason, this week’s Page One is a skim through the first pages of some short stories. Always remember that the first page of a short story is extremely good value because what you are getting is a greater proportion of the whole. [Warning: some bad language occurs in the middle of the podcast]
For the 62nd Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by Gary Powell, who is the manager of a real book shop, on the street in Exmouth Market in London. After a wobbly start, they talk about an unlikely liking for sport, the realisation that maybe nobody can give you what you need and the latest addition to a classic collection. You can buy the Rachel Kann book and find out more about her here. The podcast with Gary’s boyfriend John, which we talk about, was put out again recently. You can listen and download here. [Warning: some bad language from beginning]
For the 61st Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian sits down to eat with performer, writer, director and 32-year-old Caroline Horton. Without the help of physical books, they manage to talk about poetry competitions, lightness of touch and beauty in graphic form. You can find out more about Caroline here.
Another of the podcasts dredged up from Page One’s London Fields Radio past, Charles Adrian is joined here by ‘maker’ Greg Wohead. They talk about writing, running and the far north east (of America). Greg is a wonderful storyteller and is frequently to be found on tour – more information about his work and his tour dates is here. A note about the end of the podcast: Greg and I talk about the radio play The Air Gap, which Greg had starred in, and which told the story of Chelsea Manning. At the time of recording this conversation, Chelsea Manning was still known as Bradley Manning.
Joining Charles Adrian at the Farm Shop in Dalston for the 60th Second-Hand Book Factory is actress Liz Chan. They have a calm and quiet talk and exchange memories in different forms. Disclaimer: Having asked his guest to turn off her phone, Charles Adrian failed to turn off his; he apologises, therefore, for a little electronic interference towards the beginning of this recording. He also apologises for the occasional sound of chewing as he eats some rather nice lemon drizzle cake.
For the 59th Second-Hand Book Factory, Charles Adrian is joined by Dave Pickering, who is a freelance storyteller, podcaster and, on the day we met, author of an article about the disappearance of his previous job that was published in the Guardian’s Comment Is Free section; you can read the article here and the blog post that it is based on is here. Also, if you think you might be interested, check out Miranda July’s Learning To Love You More project here. And here is a link to Dave’s Getting Better Acquainted podcast. [Warning: some bad language during the first music track]
Sitting outside the Money Museum in Athens, Charles Adrian is joined by musician, performer and teacher Vicky Sachpazi for the 58th Second-Hand Book Factory. They talk about the science of religiosity, the right way to behave in a room and Lawrence Durrell’s ‘poet of the city’. (Incidentally, if you haven’t already, check out the 55th Page One, in which Charles Adrian talks about Lawrence Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet!) More information about Trio Tzane is here.
On top of Mount Parnitha just outside Athens, with a storm and a dog and some people in the background, Charles Adrian talks to performer Erifili Stefanidou (not to be confused with the other actress of the same name) for the 57th Second-Hand Book Factory. They talk about the most famous book in modern Greek, something splenetic by a famous Russian and something sweet by a relatively famous Frenchman. When Charles Adrian says ‘pilote’ he means, of course, ‘Pilate’.
Alison Windsor describes herself as a teaching artist with an interest in theatre and language, which is a neat shorthand for some of the kinds of things that she does. For the 56th Second-Hand Book Factory, she has flown from Sydney, Australia, to Athens, Greece, to talk to Charles Adrian about Kundera’s lightness of touch, the first play performed in (colonial) Australia and to swap stories about Paris. In the background you will occasionally hear the sound of next week’s guest… More information about Alison is here.
This week Charles Adrian puts on his poetry voice to read from some poetry pamphlets that he has found beneath Waterloo Bridge. That’s it. He encourages his listeners to embrace poetry.
Ron Cooper is a legend in frame-building. He started as a fifteen-year-old apprentice with A.S. Gillott, and his frames have come to define the very best of the British lightweight style. He talks about the early days learning from master … Continue reading →
