"The original field recording of the botanic gardens in Tallinn, Estonia, reminded me of how much I enjoy visiting these spaces, unusual and exotic flora from around the world in a little capsule… some rare specimens may only exist in these manmade protective bubbles…"For the project I extracted 6 sections of the original audio, between 5 and 25 seconds in length… (No other audio was used). I processed these on my iPad with various granular synthesis apps (Fluss, Tardigrain, Outgrowth, etc.)to dissect, disassemble, rearrange and reconstruct into a new composition."As well as adding further effects; delay, filter, distortion and reverb etc. to create 3 separate granular textured layers which I then combined together to create the final track. Some eq/compression to finalise.“The recursive manipulation; chopping, stretching and distorting of the original audio, creates a sort of dystopian cybernetic jungle, a cacophony of alien and mechanical, yet almost familiar sounds, echo around this synthetic environment…”Botanic garden in Tallinn reimagined by id_23.

His research is focused on an investigation of the philosophical and historical roots, implicit founding presuppositions and argumentative structure of the concept of wilderness, and its practical application in Dutch wildlife conservation projects. The first part of his dissertation will focus on the historical roots and the philosophical conceptual structure of our current wilderness concept. The second part will take a more practical approach. In this episode, we talk about botanic philosophy. We first discuss what it is, what a plant is, the concept of plant blindness, and a bit of the history of studying plants. We talk about the work of Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin. We discuss what influenced the way we view the natural world. We explore concepts like wilderness, rewilding, being native, being exotic, and being an invasive species. We discuss plant intelligence, and whether plants have personalities. Finally, we talk about why plants matter.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Épisode 1330 : Influenceurs, créateurs de contenu, UGC, contenus incarnés , c'est quoi la diff ? On parle ici d'employee advocacy. . . . About the Host: Chris Clarke is an environmental advocate and the knowledgeable host of the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast. He is committed to desert protection and conservation, bringing decades of experience and insights into environmental issues, policy discussions, and activism. Known for drawing attention to critical environmental concerns, including endangered species and responsible land use, Chris actively engages with audiences who care deeply about ecological preservation and advocacy. Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast, host Chris Clarke examines the much-talked-about claim of dire wolf de-extinction by a biotech firm. Chris navigates through the intricacies of this scientific breakthrough, unearthing the partial truths and sensationalism, while keeping a focus on broader environmental implications. Throughout the episode, Chris challenges the notion of de-extinct species fitting seamlessly into today's ecosystems. Drawing parallels between the dire wolves and other potential candidates for de-extinction, like the Shasta ground sloth, he discusses the feasibility and ethical considerations of such scientific pursuits. The conversation isn't just about biology; it encompasses the cultural and ecological dynamics that ground these animals in past and present narratives. Tying together scientific discourse and environmental activism, Chris highlights why preserving current ecosystems is critical for any species reintroduction success. Key Takeaways: The idea of de-extincting dire wolves is riddled with complexities, from scientific limitations to ecological impacts. Dire wolves possibly have physical adaptations ill-suited to surviving in today’s drastically altered ecosystems, calling into question their viability if brought back. De-extinction efforts are providing the antienvironmentalists in power with arguments to rescind environmental protection laws. The example of California condors serves as a reminder of the financial and ecological challenges faced in conservation and species restoration efforts. Chris advocates for a holistic approach to conservation that considers ecosystems' dynamic nature and the cultural knowledge animals pass down through generations. Notable Quotes: "Even if we grant Colossal Biosciences claims… the dire wolf is useless without its habitat." "The ecosystem that held the species and the relationships changes… they become, to some extent, new ecosystems." "What's the difference between that and releasing an invasive species into a habitat that doesn't have a niche for it?" "As long as they're in Botanic gardens, we don't have to worry, right? But it's the relationships that are important here." Isn't it just wonderful to suddenly get wind of a perfect idea that makes soooo much sense? On my departure for Tauranga to do Nature Nerd stuff at the Bay of Plenty Garden and Arts Festival, I received a fabulous email from Laura, who runs the Envirohub Bay of Plenty. Space for Nature. This is the picture: Nature doesn't just belong in our National Parks, our rural areas and wild, open spaces. If we use our spades and our plants, we can create a Biodiverse area around our homes as well. In cities and villages, in the centre of towns, all the way to the outskirts of those sterile new subdivisions. It's a matter of creating the right kind of habitat which will attract lizards, insects, birds, and magnificent fungi in autumn. Your garden could become an important corridor of Native species nearby, allowing them to move deeper and further into your “hood”. Trapping pest species is another way to add to the Biodiversity of your Quarter Acre Paradise. Imagine becoming part of such a community that links us all together for the same generous reasons: creating a much better and enjoyable ecosystem, which will be making bird song a regular concert of the Neighbourhood. There are many ways you can go about creating your own little Paradise: join a restoration team in your area (planting, trapping, weed removal, etc) and learn what works well in your district to get Biodiversity back in the backyard. You can also go for a walk in your local forest and identify what native trees, shrub, and plant species do well – identification is pretty easy when you use iNaturalist (an app on your smart phone). You can also visit your local Botanic garden and learn from the professional Botanists! Envirohub Bay of Plenty came up with another grand idea: sign the pledge to make Space for Nature in your Backyard and you'll receive advice and resources to help you in your journey – plus a sign for your gate or letterbox (“We're Providing Space for Nature”). Plus, a Native Tree and a Trap to get rid of the unwanted critters Such a simple idea. Thank you Laura! You made my day. For more information, visit their website here. As the Easter break begins, Gardeners' Corner has some easy ways to transform your garden space. David Maxwell is joined in studio by expert gardener Brendan Little who has suggestions on how an uninspiring front garden can be transformed into a low maintenance garden with interest and colour through the year. Also joining David is city gardener, Grace Loughrey, who knows how to transform the smallest of spaces with easy to find plants. Holidays are a great time to visit gardens and Kilmacurragh in south County Wicklow will be welcoming many this Easter weekend. The gardens are undergoing a major expansion programme and on this latest visit head gardener Seamus O'Brien gives David privileged access to some of the new areas under development and he also gets to see how the future of the Wollemia pine (once thought extinct) has now been secured. Also on the programme, the new trail at Belfast's Botanic gardens dedicated to John Templeton sometimes called the ‘father of Irish botany' and Huw Richards on his new book ‘The Self-Sufficiency Garden'. Contact the programme on gardenerscorner@bbc.co.uk
This week Gardeners' Corner visits what must be one of most beautiful classrooms in the country – the walled garden at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus in County Antrim. David Maxwell joins CAFRE's Lori Hartman for a look around, as work begins to renovate some areas including the hot border and a brand new brick pergola. At Mount Venus nursery, in the hills above Dublin, Oliver Shurmann has some spring highlights and Colin Agnew introduces the new Templeton trail at Belfast's Botanic gardens. In Killinchy, Anne Fitzsimmons is enjoying the spring heat in the polytunnel where she is sowing some perennials and she explains why it helps to pre-sprout your courgettes. In studio, Anna Hudson joins David to answer questions and provide some spring inspiration. Email the programme at gardenerscorner@bbc.co.uk
Despite the War, Ukraine Plans to Be a Green Energy Hub. That story and more on H2O Radio's weekly news report. Headlines: Despite Russia's destroying half of its electricity infrastructure, Ukraine is building a lot of renewable energy. Botanic gardens are among the best ways to cool cities during heat waves. To tackle space junk, Japan is making satellites out of...trees. A cure for snoring—that's also good for the planet.
This week we continue our artistic autumnal theme in conversation with Nina Veteto, a conservationist, an artist, and an expert storyteller. This is the third appearance on my podcast for today's intriguing but controversial guest: JW Ross. JW is the founder of the company Botanic Tonics, which makes an energy drink shot/alcohol alternative called "Feel Free", which has come under criticism lately, including a lawsuit, based on confusion (and lack of clarity) regarding the presence of Kratom in the product. In this episode, Jerry "JW" Ross is back to take a dive further into the latest Feel Free kratom-free formula, the continued controversy around kratom and kava safety/addiction profiles, the lawsuit, and much more. JW himself is a lifelong innovator and inventor of this plant-based tonic. He started his career as a Texas oilman who experienced immense corporate success that was tainted with alcohol addiction. After hitting rock bottom and going to rehab, JW purged alcohol from his life and completely pivoted his career. As part of his addiction recovery process, JW went on life-changing trips in the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, where he discovered botanical plant medicines whose ingredients have been used socially and in wellness for centuries. After discovering these plants, JW dedicated his life to finding a herbal solution that would replace alcohol and still give him a euphoric lift with a positive impact. He home-tested many concoctions, finally creating the perfect recipe that turned into the new Feel Free Tonic recipe.
