Resuming my Trance Mission with “The 138 bpm Drop”   Balearic Trance Journey. Drop both your inhibitions and your gear and let the journey start!   If you do not like real (but frenetic at times) bangin’ trance, I strongly suggest you give this one a miss… yet, you will have foregone quite a journey…   Firstly, I have to thank Lars for giving me the inspiration to put this set together. Lars has been supporting this space for quite a while and has always commented (positively or not) when he sees a new upload.   Recently, Lars contacted me when, in between my hiatus and completely uninterested with the current offering of traditional house, I uploaded the 2 Quanta of Solace. Once again he gave me the will-power to revisit that old love of mine, Trance, Progressive House or what I call Trouse.   In the past, I have always chided from high bpm Trance. Anything over 130 and I would either never get there or prefer not to include it in any set. Partly for I felt it was frenetic and partly for I assumed I (and by extension) you were too old for it.   The algorithm I use to choose a playlist in preparation for my sets is programmed by design to nicely keep tracks, keys, bpm and flavours in a tight range. And since I like to start slow to build up, I very rarely get to reach anything over 130 bpm.   There is vast blog space on the Internet dedicated to the question “ Who is afraid of 138 bpm Trance?” There is even a label called “ Who is afraid of 138 bpm?”…. Well, in many ways, I am!   This being said, in order to continue the Trance Mission and be true to the genre, I always knew I would eventually have to get over that fear.. I worked without the algorithm and here we are. Set is 80% over 132 bpm by DESIGN!   Vielen Danke Herr Lars. This one (good or not) is for YOU! Sorry for all the florish but had all those dits and felt like trying them out..   Another reason to resume the mission, was a request I got a few weeks ago to play for Mardi Gras for a LGBTY party in Sydney. The request was flattering, yet due to not being in the right headspace at all and natural performance jitters, I chose not to consider it. I told the promoter that I would send him a demo of what I thought would be the right journey for such an event for the boys.   Well, here it is!   As a general comment, this set is very ornate. In many ways , it is more a case of Xtian trying to take stock of what he can do and tediously learn new tricks than anything else. But along the way I am putting out there all the new edits and mashups I have been toiling on, which might just be a bit TOO MUCH in one go considering my modicum of talent but it feels so good to have them out there and await your reaction and so good to have them safely saved and backed up on my HD for a future live set! As an added bonus (for me): after the mashup of Silence and Missing from a few years back, I have now semi-cracked a mashup and counter-mashup of Finally and Silence.. Yippee, I can finally rest.    Obviously, not every track is fresh and current. For Trance is all about anthems and there are at the most 3 or 4 a year! I did try my best to include a few I never played before. As I had used a few current great tracks in the two previous Quanta and did not want to repeat myself ad nauseam, I decided to try out all the edits I have been working on in the past and had lost when my library got corrupted. Call it a bulk early release, other would call it premature ej...... but sorry I just had to..   Even more satisfying, almost all tracks are new Xtian Edits of mostly unkown remixes and , for better or for worse, you get the added bonus of a few of mashups I am quite happy with.   Now close your eyes, imagine you bought a ticket for Ibiza, got yourself sorted and you are ready for a genuine balearic Trance journey..    DO NOT GET AFRAID WHEN IT GOES TO 138.. "Kiss Me Here", old Tritonal fav of mine with a great built up and Christine de Soto amazing vocals. This year will see a LOT of "Saltwater" remixes as I think it is the 20th anniversary. I can't wait to see what comes as I believe that "Saltwater" is one track that has yet to get THE DEFINITIVE REMIX but in the meantime, I found this 2009 one give this anthem a bit of a kick. A very recent track from Above and Beyond "Treasure", DO NOT MISS.. Zoe Johnston whose voice you will recognize is just amazing. Great melodic trance. Then starts a "Silence" extravaganza.. None of those remixes are run of the mill ones, most are bootleg and ALL are my personal private edits and mashups. I obviously have overdone it.  But now I have those files secured and backed up and I am ready to drop them any time.. Starts at 38:00, Mashup Silence/Finally (41:19) to end around 46:16. "Koori" from Vitodito.. Japanese Trance.. Just because it is japanese.. "Second Chance" from Blood , Grooves and Kikkis.. Do not love the track but I actually think I did a fair job with the "Silence" mashup (starts at around 58:32). A unknow trance remix of You've Got the Love" got the mashup treatment with "How Deep is Your Love" at !:04:54 Could not have a balearic Trance journey without some latin rhythm and hence brought in a new remix of "Pasilda" from Helena Legend. Followed by another anthem but a completely new take with Kings of Tomorrow "Finally" in a totally different colour courtesy of Frank Caro and a private Xtian Edit, which I can live with and will use in live sets.. Tracks starts at 1:20:20 mashup at 1:22:02) Onto a Chicane medley, with a "Poppihola" mashup with Dajae's "Everyday My Life", which almost works.. So close but another one I will drop in live sets.. (Mashup starts at 1:29:40) Do not miss "An Angel's Love" from Alex M.O.R.P.H. ANTHEM... I had missed this absolute gem from 2011.. When Trance meets Classical I am completely in my element.. LOVE IT! Finishing with "As the Rush Comes" from Motrocycle, another anthem, but presenting my private edit, true to the original but if I may say maybe even more potent.. Spring has Sprung Pt.3 (Vintage Trance for Vintage Ravers)   Third and last part.. It got a bit more interesting from there on..   A bit of context.. For a few years, our crew has been yearning for some good old uplifting Trance.. Back to the 90’s.. I was quite apprehensive about it, not being sure that we ,still, actually could handle any sustained trance.   I did learn a few things whilst mixing the set and I will come back to that later, but I am happy to report that I was proven wrong., Trance can work if appropriately tailored to the crowd.   Straight out of the mixer with all the imperfections of live mixing.. I learned a valuable lesson for the next time I play Trance: A) Maximum length of set should be 1h30 B) Unless the track is an ABSOLUTE ANTHEM  (and there are max 10 of these all around) no track should be more than 4/5 minutes, therefore only radio edits to be used in the future. C) Attention span of the punters is 2 minutes if nothing change ( levels etc...).   I will be back with an original mix within a fortnight..   To our friends.. On a Trance-Mission: Episode 01 (The Ambient Set)   Off to a Journey into Trance..  and if I am not delusional the first port of call is a good one.. Dust off the glow sticks, the furry boots, the neon T-shirts, the lycra leggings, the kandi, the beads necklaces, the multi pocket flarry pants, the lasers and get ready for minor keys! In the next few weeks, across several uploads, I will attempt to take you back to those memorable days with (mostly) current productions. I am attempting to find a modern. adult, progressive Trance vibe.. I have been burning with the desire to build one of those journeys for a while. It is a slow process and I usually give up! This time, in the next 4 uploads, I have set  myself the challenge to take you there.. I usually stop midway either for lack of good current material or because once the higher bpm region (130 to 140 bpm) are reached, I find that frenzy aspect of Trance possibly too hard to stomach or probably just not something I would know when and how to appreciate. Yet, as far as EDM is concerned, Trance was my first love and nothing, NOTHING can replace the memories of a great Trance journey.   So here we are... at the onset of the Journey!   Episode One: The Ambient Set We will be crossing over from Progressive to Ambient, Down-Tempo, Deep, Trance, even some classical and opera.  One common thread to the set: all tracks have a balearic vibe.. Starting very tame but those with keen ears and kindred spirit will regognize that, without a shred of doubt, we are on a trance journey! It will pick up in the next sets!   If you do not dig Trance, this episode will be bearable but as we progress you may want to zone out for a little bit. I will slot a soulful one somewhere to keep you interested !   The only rule I gave myself for this project was to restrict the number of old Trance classics to only 2 per set, to mix them 100% live to have a real journey feel, and finally to allow myself as many edits as I wanted in order to keep my interest fresh until this project is finished.   Playlist:     Intro Warp Journey Intro (Space Chor Mix). Loving it so much I actually doubled it throughout the set.. I obviously did not realize it at the time and being live it is too late now to take it off. The artist name is Anton from Lipetsk, Russia. I could listen to the production, the vocals, the vibe all day long..   “The Velorian Can’t Stop” I am VERY VERY VERY happy of this mash-up.. Luck or talent, most probably the former, but it works! The original track is called “The Velorian” from the same Magic Surfer as the intro track. (Track starts at 00:12:00 Mash-Upstarts at 00:12:33)   “Still Here” from Envotion, a Dutch trio. Production without compromise, a perfect male vocalist from their progressive sound. A very pleasing and driving track.   "Tusindfryd" .. If it were not for the next track “Coeur de la Nuit” this would be the track of the set.. I love the very subtle guitar and back percussions. I love the ethereal vocals. The well dropped synths. The classical build, which reminds me of J.S. Bach, the flute... I love everything. It is up there with the best of Chicane... I even think my edit is OK! From the great Dane Morten Granau. Morten , who started in Trance and progressed to Psy-Trance. To paraphrase his Beatport profile, he eventually matured to the joy of adult sounds with Progressive Trance.. His production is intricate, melodic, deep and fully deserves the label of Classic Progressive Trance. (http://www.beatport.com/artist/morten-granau/100602), In fact if my current project steers to anything, it is to find that modern but adult progressive Trance sound..   And now for the piece de resistance… GREAT TUNE ALERT !!   “Coeur de la Nuit” from Ferdinand Dreyssig & Marvin Hey.. Once a year do I discover something I rate this highly.. Church Choral music all under a TRIBAL and Trance vibe.. Now, that is interesting!! And very much the sort of track, which drew me to Trance when I became interested in EDM! (Track starts at 00:38:27) Duo from Berlin, started in Hip-Hop, I cannot wait to discover what else they have produced. Given the church dimension of the track, my absolute love of Choral music, I tried to edit it like a canon, mashing two different remixes starting at 8 and 4 measures apart and shifting the key to a third and a fifth to create new harmonies.. To sum it up I had fun. Result is so, so but if you miss it, you are missing a great piece of original music!    “Darling” from Simone Vitullo an innovative modern producer from Italy, check the percussions and the bassline. Would love to have the stems of those! Very soft and classical composition. And one of those voices I could listen to all day..   “Fugaz” from Th Moy.  A great Catalan remixer with a tune I would describe with the following words: smooth purity, depth and grace. Xtian just had to add the ad-lib to what was a perfect tune.. Just can’t help it.. Another track build J.S.  Bach's fugue like with contrapuntal  themes, shifting keys ever so slowly throughout the track and in the back.. a great classical vocalist, not in your face, just when and where the track needs her.. Brilliant! the last time I checked the set I counted 7 different percussions in the track.. Respect!   “Egoiste” from Sebastian Weikum & The Vehicle. Polish, supported by AVB, A&B and PVD :0! Mixing Trance and Progressive, on point for the vibe I am aiming for. I sang along to that one and hope you will as well. Same classical vibe as Fugaz..   “Beat Organ” from the Dutch duo 16 Bit Lolitas. I have been using a lot of their music lately.. Very talented! Five chords that's all it took them to write a great tune! I so could dance to a track like that.. My type of groove for the ones who know what gets me going..   Finally to close the set, “Track to Infinity” from DJ Sveta feat. Alexsandra Mell. Do NOT miss! Currently the best female DJ in Russia, where, incidentally, a lot of good Progressive Trance is coming from. Classic trance build but very subtle production avoiding the traps of the genre and consequently serving what Trance can uniquely give: Transcendence. Loving this one.. Female Trance/Prog such as the Swiss Tatjana, Sveta and to a certain extend Maya Janes Coles are my favourites..   I am not mentioning the Chicane tracks, you know them well. They are only included as a tribute to the genre and to Nick Bracegirdle and to make sure that some older listeners make the effort to stream the whole set and rcognize something.   I hope you enjoy this episode! By the length of the blog part, you can guess I am pretty taken with it.. I spent a lot of time in post-production, making sure there was anything obvious which could be corrected. One of the very few uploadds I know I will listen to with pleasure again. You are even getting a 320 kps of this one.. Sorry for the size but those tracks are simply too good to be compressed to the max..   The next one is almost ready. Slowly but surely the tempo is going up..   A bientôt   Xtian   P.S.: The ratio of good tunes to bad tunes in Trance is about 1 to 100! I am not exaggerating. Please bear a thought for what I have had to endure.. Hence the fact that I will finish this project for it will take a monstruous effort before I muster the courage to go through this hell again!
