Women make up the fastest growing incarcerated population in the U.S—yet, politicians and the media frequently frame incarceration as an issue that affects only boys and men. Why is so little attention paid to women and mass incarceration? What does the failure to include women in the analysis on mass incarceration mean for communities, families and the women themselves? What are the unique challenges women and girls face behind bars and after they are released? Helping us sort out these questions and more are very special guests: Sue Ellen Allen, founder and executive director of Reinventing Reentry. A University of Texas grad, educator, community leader, former inmate at Arizona State Prison and current activist, she found her purpose from serving time in prison. She is the author of The Slumber Party from Hell, a memoir about prison life, and the recipient of the Dawson Prize in Memoir in the 2009 Prison Writing Contest for PEN American Center. Piper Kerman, author of the memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison. The book has been adapted by Jenji Kohan into an Emmy Award-winning original series for Netflix, which ran for seven seasons. Piper collaborates with nonprofits, philanthropies and other organizations working in the public interest and serves on the board of directors of the Women’s Prison Association and the advisory boards of the PEN America Writing For Justice Fellowship, InsideOUT Writers, Healing Broken Circles and JustLeadershipUSA. Kamilah Newton, a writer for Yahoo Lifestyle and associate producer for MAKERS. Her background is in advocacy, activism and social justice reform. She has been featured on CNN, Career Contessa, Miss Grass and Hello Beautiful among other publications. Most recently, she participated in a virtual reality piece directed by Al Jazeera called Still Here, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ravage underresources indigenous communities across the United States, hosts Dope KNife and Linqua Franqa consider the ways our country's Eurocentric obsession with quantification and categorization have fed the marginalization of Native peoples and African Americans alike, and how the historical undercounting of Native populations has led to the COVID crisis our indigenous brothers and sisters are experiencing today. They speak with activist, hip hop artist, and former state house candidate Lyla June about our shared struggles for sovreignty and how Native wisdom informs her environmental justice advocacy. And they honor Native hip hop from various corners of North America, from the boujee stylings of Haisla duo Snotty Noz Rez Kids to a pride in tradition seen in Dreezus' Warpath to the poetic resilience of JB the First Lady's Still Here. Also up for discussion is how the banking community is readying itself for a brace of problem loans and exactly what “the gossip in the steamie” means.

In this week’s We’re Still Here podcast, EG editor Samantha McClary is joined by reporter Lucy Alderson to talk about the findings from EG’s latest mental health survey. The industry remains one of most affected by mental health issues with half of respondents saying they had experienced unmanageable stress and/or mental health issues in their current role. A figure well above the national average of one in six. The pandemic has understandably had an impact too, with more than 50% of respondents saying they thought that working from home had negatively affected their mental health. Stress around job security, finances and feelings of isolation were also highlighted as specific issues this year. But, the Covid crisis has also pushed the importance of understanding mental health and wellbeing much further up the agenda of many businesses, with a whopping 20 percentage point move in the correction direction when it came to how comfortable people felt talking about their mental wellbeing at work. Visit EG’s mental health hub at https://www.egi.co.uk/mental-health/ for the results in full and much, much more. Or listen in to this week’s We’re Still here for the lowdown from Lucy Alderson, some reasons to be cheerful from Samantha McClary and for your chance to figure out just why they spend quite so long talking about Double Deckers.

On this week's We're Still Here podcast, host Emily Wright is joined by residential reporter Emma Rosser and editor Sam McClary for a chat about all things planning. That an a bit of a post-party debrief following last night's virtual EG Awards. Up first, Rosser give sus the lowdown on the industry's response to government planning reforms which have been widely slated by the sector for "ignoring commercial property while still calling for the sector to foot the bill for the overhaul." The British Property Federation (BPF) has flagged concerns that the 80-page document does not include a single reference to "commercial property". Hugh Ellis, director of policy at the Town and Country Planning Association added that both the private sector and commercial real estate leaders should collaborate on alternative reform that would represent "an increased focus, not on delivery, but on detail expertise, knowledge and evidence to fix the problems, rather than this ideological nonsense." But how realistic is an industry-wide alliance? And will government listen? Tune in to hear Rosser's thoughts and predictions on the ongoing saga. Also on this week's episode a run-down from editor Sam McClary following this week's EG Awards. The event marked the 16th awards but the first presented on a virtual stage and was a welcome celebration in the midst of a tough year. For more, check out the podcast or see the full list of winners here https://www.egi.co.uk/eg-awards-2020/.
On this week's We're Still Here podcast, host Emily Wright is joined by EG's head of retail and industrial research James Child as EG analysis reveals that a flood of lease expiries over the next five years could see close to 1bn sq ft of space back on the market. Analysis using EG's Radius Data Exchange shows that almost 65% of retail and food beverage leases signed since 2015 will expire of have lease breaks between now and 2025, potentially delivering some 975m sq ft back to landlords. Child delves into the data in greater depth on this week's podcast and urges the sector to be prepared and act now but not to get too caught up in negative headlines but instead to focus on how the industry can manage the situation. From repurposing and reanimating retail spaces for the future to recognising accelerated trends and the rise of independent retailers, Child discusses how landlords might manage the "glut of space" expected to arrive in the market over the next few years and how to rent it. Read the full story and analysis here https://www.egi.co.uk/news/lease-release-1bn-sq-ft-could-be-handed-back-to-retail-and-leisure-landlords/ or tune into this week's podcast for Child's story round-up.
On this week’s episode of EG’s We’re Still Here podcast, host Emily Wright is joined by EG’s deputy editor and head of content Tim Burke. The pair kick of the episode with a review of our EG Talent Special out this week. From catching up with some of our original Future Female Leaders to introducing the 5th cohort of EG Rising Stars, it is an homage to all things fresh, bright-eyed and future-focused. Wright reveals what she thinks it takes to be considered a Rising Star in today’s real estate market highlighting the fact that, ever since EG started putting together the annual list in 2015, there has always been as much of a focus on people impacting the industry who do not have a traditional real estate background as those who do. This year is no different with an array of Rising Star finalists from the worlds of property, tech, finance, retail, sustainability and well-being. Find out more here https://www.egi.co.uk/news/bright-sparks-rising-stars-2020/. Listeners this week are then treated to some highlights from Burke’s interview with former BBC real estate boss Chris Kane on the post-Covid workplace. Now heading up his own workplace consultancy Six Ideas after stints at NHS Property Services and Networking Housing Group, Kane reveals why he doesn’t think young people will necessarily return to the office and why the pandemic has “poured high octane fuel” on workplace trends. Check out the full interview here https://www.egi.co.uk/news/the-eg-interview-former-bbc-real-estate-boss-on-the-post-covid-workplace/ or tune into the podcast for some clips of Kane’s chat with Burke.

On this week's We're Still Here podcast it's all about answering some pretty big questions. Host Emily Wright is joined by EG's news editor Pui-Guan Man and residential reporter Emma Rosser to dive into all things planning, deals, offices and retail. Rosser kicks off this week's episode with an in depth overview of the planning backlash which has called time on "grotesque" PDR micro-homes before delving into the growing rebellion against proposed planning reforms. The latter has seen former prime minister Theresa May attack the proposals and call on government to come up with an alternative. "My point is simple," she said in a debate in the House of Commons. "These proposals do not deliver on government policies." Then, Man gives an overview of this week's big deals news and hints at the possibility of a stronger Q4 for real estate than many were expecting and a small victory for retail landlords. For all of this plus more, tune into this week's episode of We're Still Here.
On this week's We're Still Here podcast, host Emily Wright is back and is joined by editor Samantha McClary for a good, old-fashioned round-up of the week's biggest stories. We’re Still Here is back for another episode this week, making Friday a Friyay. And while tech and special projects editor Emily Wright is away for the week making pastry somewhere deep in Middle England, tech and global reporter Lucy Alderson has stepped in this week to debrief on this week’s biggest news stories with deputy editor Tim Burke. And unlike the jam-packed, news-filled week it was for all things property, Alderson and Burke kick off proceedings by discussing how the government’s U-turn on its back to the office campaign could see London turn into a doughnut – nothing in the middle with lots of activity round the edges. The duo discuss the various reactions from real estate heavyweights to the government’s new covid-19 measures, and how it will affect the capital’s recovery in the long-term. Attentions turn to discussing the latest developments concerning the widespread redundancy programmes taking place across the agency sector. This week saw a number of high profile senior directors strike out on their own to set up new consultancies after losing their jobs, and Alderson and Burke discuss the challenges, but also the opportunities, that removing the stigma around redundancies could present. The two also discuss another issue that stigma also surrounds – mental health. Last week EG launched its second annual mental health survey to gather insight into the mental health of property’s workforce. Last year’s survey showed that 1 in 4 property professionals had considered suicide, and EG is looking to see whether property has been able to shift those worryingly high stats back. Please help us by filling out the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/VBKMQ6Y

This episode is the third installment in our “What The World Needs Now” series. This four-week “study” of sorts features discussions and reflection sparked from a special activist sermon series CBC and several other congregations are taking part in this month. Each week in August, an activist preacher is giving us their take on the theme. Today’s episode is based upon a sermon of this series, which you can watch on our Youtube Channel, preached by Rev. Melissa McQueen-Simmons, who is ordained in the United Church of Christ, and serves as the Faith Director for Many Voices: A Black Church Movement for Gay and Transgender Justice. Rev. McQueen-Simmons argues that today, what the world needs is radical love. In this episode of the podcast, Kelley Wool, a hugely talented member of the CBC choir, joins Pastor Robin Anderson and Cheri Spiegel discuss this excellent sermon, and chat about Song of Songs, radical love, and the effects of purity culture. On this week’s We’re Still Here podcast, EG deputy editor Tim Burke and head of retail and industrial research James Child discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the UK’s seaside towns. As some of us have the chance for a trip to the coast with lockdown restrictions easing, the economies of seaside towns nonetheless face many challenges. What role and responsibilities does the real estate industry have in driving their regeneration? What fresh pressures does the coronavirus pandemic bring? And, above all, which coastal towns do Tim and James pick as their top spots for a break? For more on this topic, you can download the report Turning the Tide: Seaside Regeneration from EG and Radius Data Exchange here: https://secureforms.egi.co.uk/EG9HJ-turning-the-tide

On this week's episode of We're Still Here, host Emily Wright is joined by tech reporter Lucy Alderson to talk about anything but the recession. From the United Nation's collaboration with affordable housing developer Planet Smart City to improve living conditions in African slums to the continuing acceleration of tech in real estate, this week's episode is all about focusing on some of the more positive news stories out there this week. That and a typically British review of all things weather related of course.

Each week in August, an activist preacher is giving us their take on “What the World Needs Now…” The first sermon of this series, which you can watch on our Youtube Channel, featured Judge Wendell Griffen, an Arkansas Circuit Judge and Pastor of New Millennium Church, an Alliance of Baptists congregation in Little Rock. Listen in for a discussion about faith and stick around to hear who wins the Bible Drill: Robin or Marty!About Judge GriffenJudge Griffen is an incredible man who brings his action together with his preaching. For example, on Good Friday 2017, he protested capital punishment outside of the Arkansas Governor's mansion. As you might guess, he has since been banned from hearing death penalty cases. Judge Griffen is also the author of The Fierce Urgency of Prophetic Hope. On this week's episode of We're Still Here, Emily Wright is joined once again by editor Sam McClary to discuss productivity, positivity and frogs. From the price we must pay for the increased productivity many are reporting as they continue to work from home to some of the more positive elements of lockdown, the duo considers how the sector is faring as we move into the depths of the summer and approach five months of a very different way of living and working. Also this week we consider what we really mean by the phrase "new normal", the tech titans leading the world's biggest real estate companies through the uncomfortable transition ready for a post-pandemic world and guest interviewee Michael Chittenden on his career path from motorbike mechanic to property investor and why we should all be "eating the frog." Tune in for more.
