Hugh Mercer: Washington's General Who Died at Princeton

How did Hugh Mercer, a 20-year-old Scottish fugitive who survived the Battle of Culloden, become one of George Washington's generals and die at the Battle of Princeton? Discover the forgotten American Revolution story of Hugh Mercer and how his extraordinary second chance reveals something fundamental about America itself. In this episode of America's Founding Series on The P.A.S. Report Podcast, Professor Nick Giordano uncovers the remarkable story of General Hugh Mercer. From a hunted Jacobite rebel who escaped the British crackdown after Culloden to a frontier physician, French and Indian War veteran, respected Virginia leader, and Continental Army general, Mercer's life embodies a timeless American truth: your past does not have to determine your future.   What You'll Learn In This Episode:    The Fugitive Physician: How Hugh Mercer survived the Battle of Culloden in 1746, escaped the British crackdown on Jacobite rebels, and found a second chance in colonial Pennsylvania. The Crucible of Reinvention: How Mercer rebuilt his life as a physician, earned the respect of his community, served in the French and Indian War, and developed a close relationship with George Washington. The Ultimate Gamble of 1776: Why a 50-year-old doctor who had already survived one failed rebellion chose to risk his family, fortune, and life on the American Revolution. The Stand at William Clarke's Orchard: What happened at the Battle of Princeton when British troops surrounded Mercer, reportedly mistook him for Washington, and left him mortally wounded after he refused to surrender. The Lesson for Today: Why the American story is not about perfection, but redemption, and why America must preserve the belief that failure, background, and past mistakes do not have to dictate a person's future. Hugh Mercer never lived to see American independence. He never saw the Constitution, George Washington become president, or the republic his sacrifice helped create. Yet his life captures something essential about the American experiment: America does not require perfect people. It offers people the opportunity to rise, rebuild, and redeem themselves. But a second chance also carries responsibility, and every generation must decide what it will do with the opportunities America provides. Randy Hulsey sits down with Texas country artist Bubba Westly for an honest, boots-on-the-ground conversation about what actually builds a career when you are doing it independently: family roots, long drives, late-night lyric notes, chart pressure, and the humility it takes to keep going when the plan changes.  Bubba performs live in the studio and unpacks the stories behind the music, including “Feel So Good,” a track he wrote years ago and resurrected after audiences kept asking to hear it again. We also talk through his lyric-first songwriting process, how he decides when a song is truly finished, and the business milestones that made it all feel real, like holding his first royalty check and learning how publishing and PROs like BMI work in practice.  The conversation turns deeply personal with “Every Other Weekend,” a vulnerable co-write about parenting, custody, and the emotions that can hit hardest onstage. Bubba also shares how sobriety and faith reshaped his life, why he invites prayer requests online, and how he meets fans at the merch booth after shows to offer encouragement, not just sell merch. Senior Pastor Jason explores the profound reality that human failure is never final when placed in the hands of Jesus. Drawing from the final chapter of John's Gospel, the sermon highlights the restoration of the apostle Peter, illustrating how Jesus met him in his shame on the shore of Galilee to offer healing rather than condemnation. The message emphasizes that God uses our mistakes as a refining fire to purify our character and bring us closer to His image, much like a silversmith heating precious metal until his own reflection is visible. Through personal stories regarding his own marriage, parenting, and ministry, the Jason demonstrates that a second chance from God is not permission to remain in our brokenness, but the empowerment to fulfill a renewed calling. Ultimately, the summary of the Christian walk is found not in perfect performance, but in the radical mercy of a Savior who looks past our failures to ask the most vital question: "Do you love me?"Referenced Scriptures:Psalm 32:1-6, 11 – A reflection on the blessing of forgiveness and the heaviness of unconfessed sin.John 21:1-19 – The account of Jesus appearing to the disciples by the Sea of Galilee and restoring Peter.Malachi 3:3 – The prophecy of the Lord acting as a refiner and purifier of silver.1 Peter 1:6-7 – Encouragement regarding faith being refined by fire to result in praise and honor.

“Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!” (Psalm 32:1 NLT) Without a doubt, one of the greatest blessings of the Christian life is that our God gives second chances. The apostle Paul wrote, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Romans 3:23 NLT). But even if we’ve failed miserably, God gives us the opportunity to put it behind us. He can dramatically turn things around on our behalf. He can forgive us. We have a choice in the course our lives take. We can either confess our sin and turn from it and know the happiness of being forgiven, or we can try to conceal our sin and then reap what we’ve sown. The Bible tells us that God will not bless people who try to hide their sin. Isaiah 3:9 says of such people, “They are doomed! They have brought destruction upon themselves” (NLT). On the other hand, Psalm 32:1 says, “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!” (NLT). Doesn’t that sound better? David, the writer of the psalm, understood this well. David’s story is a classic rags-to-riches tale. David was a shepherd and a musician. He was overlooked even in his own family. When his brothers went off to war, David was given the role of delivery boy. When Samuel the prophet told Jesse, David’s father, that God had sent him to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the next king of Israel, Jesse didn’t even include David in the lineup. Yet David thrived in the role of underdog. He killed the giant Goliath. He succeeded Saul as the king of Israel. God gave David the chance of a lifetime, and David rose to the occasion. Gradually, though, his attention wandered. His priorities shifted. According to 2 Samuel 11:1, King David sent his men to battle the Ammonites while he “stayed behind in Jerusalem” (NLT). While he was idling in Jerusalem, he saw a woman named Bathsheba taking a bath. David sent for her and slept with her, even though she was the wife of Uriah, one of his most faithful soldiers. When he learned that Bathsheba was pregnant, David called Uriah back from battle, hoping that he would sleep with his wife. That way, people would assume that he was the father of her child. But Uriah refused to enjoy the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers were still camped on the battlefield. In desperation, David arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle so that he could marry the widow Bathsheba in time to make the baby’s birth seem legitimate. David failed God spectacularly. He committed adultery and murder. And after he was confronted by the prophet Nathan, he felt the weight of his sin. He wrote, “Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin” (Psalm 51:1–2 NLT). God heard his prayer, forgave his sins, and gave him a second chance. And God will do the same for you, no matter what you’ve done, if you repent and ask for forgiveness. Reflection question: How does knowing that God offers forgiveness and second chances change the way you respond when you fail? Angela is an independent author whose novels beautifully explore emotional resilience, second chances, and relationships that grow through trust, laughter, and life's imperfect moments. Her stories remind us that love isn't always found in grand gestures—it often grows quietly through friendship, courage, and choosing to open our hearts again. Her newest novel, My Plus One = You, captures the magic of unexpected connection, while her writing continues to celebrate women who have lived, learned, healed, and refuse to stop believing in new beginnings. Her T-E-E is Slow Burn Romance—stories that honour emotional growth, genuine connection, and the beauty of love unfolding at exactly the right pace. Angela, welcome to Teatime with Miss Liz. It is an honour to share your journey with our audience. Closing: Today's conversation reminds us that every love story begins long before two people meet. Angela's writing celebrates resilience, healing, friendship, and the courage to believe that happiness can arrive after heartbreak. Through authentic characters and meaningful storytelling, she encourages readers to embrace life's unexpected moments and trust that every chapter serves a purpose. Thank you, Angela, for creating stories that remind us love is not about perfection—it's about showing up, staying open, and choosing connection. May your words continue to inspire readers to believe in second chances and happily-ever-afters written in their own unique way. Angela Haas is an indie romance author, podcast co-host, and storyteller known for emotionally rich, slow-burn romances featuring resilient characters and heartfelt second chances. Author of My Plus One = You and No Climb Too High, she celebrates authentic love, personal growth, and the courage to begin again through unforgettable stories.Miss Liz Reflection: “The most unforgettable love stories aren't built on perfect moments—they're built on imperfect people who choose each other, one brave step at a time.”— Miss Liz #TeatimeWithMissLiz#AngelaHaas#SlowBurnRomance#IndieAuthor#SecondChances

What happens when the future you've spent your entire life chasing disappears overnight? For Russ Cooke, that question became painfully real after a concussion during New York Jets training camp ended the football career he had spent years pursuing. One day he was preparing to play in the National Football League. The next, he was back home pumping gas, wondering how everything had changed so quickly. In this encore episode of HarmonyTALK, host Todd Stephens revisits one of our favorite conversations about resilience, reinvention, and discovering purpose after disappointment.Russ shares the emotional journey of rebuilding his identity after football, the lessons he learned while starting over, and why losing one dream ultimately led him to a far greater calling.Today, as founder of NDUR for Athletes, Russ is helping schools, coaches, parents, and student-athletes redefine what success looks like. Through an innovative 360-degree wellness system, NDUR combines mental wellness, leadership development, mentorship, career readiness, financial literacy, and AI-powered engagement tools to support the whole athlete, not simply athletic performance. As anxiety, depression, and burnout continue to rise among young athletes, Russ believes the conversation surrounding sports must evolve. Championships matter. Character matters more.Throughout the conversation, Russ reflects on perseverance, leadership, identity, and why some of life's greatest opportunities arrive only after our original plans fall apart.

What does it take to move from caring about a problem to actively helping solve it? On this episode of Daily Influence, host Gregg-Brooke Koleno speaks with Chason Forehand, founder of HR-4U and creator of Transformation Kitchen, about building workplaces and communities that put people first. Drawing from his career in the culinary industry and his own experience with addiction and incarceration, Chason explains how receiving a second chance changed his life—and inspired him to create opportunities for others facing barriers to employment. Through Transformation Kitchen, participants receive culinary training, professional certifications, life coaching, health and wellness support, paid experience, and connections to living-wage employment. Chason also shares the challenges of overcoming organizational gatekeeping and why lasting change requires collaboration across businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and communities. In this episode: • Why living wages benefit employees, businesses, families, and communities • How leaders can ensure people feel valued, seen, and heard • Why second-chance employment can help break cycles of poverty and instability • How Transformation Kitchen prepares people for sustainable culinary careers • Why meaningful workforce development requires long-term support • How employers can begin creating more inclusive employment opportunities • The critical difference between being an ally and becoming an advocate Chason's message is clear: supporting a cause is not enough. Positive, responsible influence requires action. Whether you contribute your time, talent, resources, or connections, you can help someone forge a new path forward. Is Kouri Richins about to get a second chance? She was convicted of aggravated murder, sentenced to life without parole on her husband's birthday, and her own children asked the judge to never let her out. Now her lawyers have filed a fourteen-page motion arguing she was denied a fair trial — and the judge who convicted her has stepped aside.Tony Brueski goes through the motion's three claims: judge bias, excessive financial evidence, and cumulative error. The defense compares Kouri's case to Alex Murdaugh's overturned conviction. The episode explains why that comparison collapses — the Murdaugh ruling turned on jury tampering that doesn't exist in the Richins case. The episode also covers what the motion reveals about the pattern that has defined Kouri Richins since the night Eric died. A children's grief book published while she was free. A text to an admirer after the guilty verdict promising to "expose them all." And now a fourteen-page filing blaming the judge. Three moments across four years, same operating system.Inside: the full text of the admirer message from the sentencing memo, the courtroom footage of Kouri rolling her eyes while counselors read her sons' letters, her forty-five-minute sentencing speech telling her children to "be like your dad," the three GIFs accessed on her phone the morning Eric was found dead, and the twenty-six financial felonies still pending. Eric's sister told the court he believed Kouri was the most evil person he'd ever met — and he stayed in the marriage anyway to protect his boys.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? We'll talk about why a relationship built on even one dishonest foundation stone will eventually crumble, how age lies on dating apps turn into lies about education, job, and marital status, and why love‑bombers cry and promise “I'll never lie again” right when you catch them. I'll walk through the age‑gap story, the way physical attraction and money make people overlook red flags, and how forgiving the first lie almost always leads to discovering a whole pattern of deception later. If you've ever found yourself trying to get a liar to change instead of protecting your own reality, this video will give you the clarity and permission to treat that first lie as your exit signal, not a test of how much you can tolerate.Book a Coaching Session: [https://link.me/mentalhealness]
