This week, we’ll hear from Annie Bosko, a country artist whose career was gaining momentum when, in the middle of a live performance, her voice suddenly gave out. What followed was a vocal cord injury that required surgery and months of recovery where she couldn’t speak at all. Annie shares what that season of silence revealed, the people who stepped in to help her rebuild, and how she slowly returned to doing what she loves. Later, we’ll hear from chef and author Danielle Kartes. After her family lost everything when their restaurant closed, Danielle struggled to rebuild her life and marriage. Though she vowed never to cook again, she was drawn back to the kitchen. Her attempt to reconcile her deep faith with her practical, food-centric work asking, “How does hope relate to pot roast?” became the foundation for her company, Rustic Joyful Food. But when nothing’s going for you, or when you feel like you’re at your wit’s end and you feel really down on all hope, I think that’s when people have to turn to faith the most.” - Annie Bosko “You have to be on the bigger spiritual plan, path, [or] course for your life that doesn’t look like anyone else’s. That’s really important to sort of tune out sometimes even like your own voices of fear, because I really believe that anytime you’re making decisions out of fear, that’s not in love.” - Annie Bosko “I can carry out God’s plan for me, [and] I think at the end of the day, it’s only you and God [that] know how far you can actually go.” - Annie Bosko “God is still good, and He can still use your story even if it’s broken. God still wants wonderful things from you.” - Danielle Kartes “When I stopped wanting Him to show up in the way that I thought I needed and allowed God to show up in the way that He needed for my life, everything changed as far as my peace and trusting His provision.” - Danielle Kartes “I think that you can strengthen your family bond and your bond with your children by allowing them into your day. I think that it’s really important to just involve your kids in what you’re doing.” - Danielle Kartes “The more time you spend with the Lord, the more time you make for Jesus, the better you feel, even if your life circumstances aren’t changing.” - Danielle Kartes “God didn’t promise us that it would be easy, but He did promise, “I’m going to be with you every step of the way.” - Danielle Kartes ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Some stories grip you because of the storm. Others stay with you because of what comes after.New York Times bestselling author John U. Bacon has written more than a dozen books from leadership lessons drawn from coaching America's worst high school hockey team, to Michigan classics to his latest, The Gales of November, the untold story behind the Edmund Fitzgerald and the brutal, invisible world of Great Lakes shipping. In this episode, John and I cover a lot of ground: what makes a leader worth following, why disaster is almost never one thing, the Colin Powell quote every boss should keep close, and why first drafts are supposed to stink. We talk about Bo Schembechler's secret superpower (it wasn't yelling), the wild west of college football today, and the parenting wisdom of getting out of the way and letting the kids play their own game.We also share a tender moment about my parents who sat in John's University of Michigan classroom in retirement and lived a curiosity-first chapter that still shapes how I move through the world. If you're navigating a curveball, building something new, raising kids, or just trying to figure out what to keep and what to let go… this one's for you.johnubacon.compaigekornblue.com

In this episode Tim Dyck and Jody Maberry discuss whether a second chance is appropriate when accountability and communication are already in question. Tim explains why leaders must balance empathy with practical decision making. The desire to simply fill a seat can lead to poor hiring choices. Ownership matters more than apologies when a hiring situation starts going sideways. There are certain things leaders should listen for when deciding whether to give someone a second chance. Steven Dominguez was a correction officer at Rikers Island. Norman Seabrook ran the correction officers' union. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, they sit down face to face for a rare and uncomfortable conversation — one that holds a corrupt guard accountable in front of the man who was supposed to represent him. They debate corruption, power, and the reality of working inside one of America's most controversial jail systems — challenging each other on what's truth and what's misunderstood, and asking whether meaningful reform at Rikers Island is even possible today. _____________________________________________ #RikersIsland #PrisonCorruption #TrueCrime _____________________________________________ Watch my interview wirh Steven Dominguez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EvupiKuyuw&t=166s _____________________________________________ Watch my interview with Norman Seabrook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Q7tofDnJ8&t=1s _____________________________________________ Connect with Steven Dominguez: https://www.instagram.com/chillstevie/ _____________________________________________ Connect with Norman Seabrook: https://www.instagram.com/normseabrook/ _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Corrupt Rikers Guard vs Honest Union Boss — The Full Story 01:53 The Corruption and Dysfunction Inside Rikers Island Nobody Talks About 04:42 How the System Capitalism and Jail Jobs Create Corrupt Officers 07:02 Why So Many Young Inexperienced Officers End Up Corrupt at Rikers 10:30 Personal Stories and the Family Ties That Pull People Into Jail Work 13:04 The Reality of Corruption at Rikers — What Becomes Normal and Why 16:17 Temptation Greed and the Moment Officers Choose to Cross the Line 18:42 How Leadership Addiction and Culture Among Officers Enables Corruption 22:17 Who Is Really Responsible When Officers Go Bad 24:18 Real Corruption Stories and the Consequences Nobody Prepares You For 27:40 The Mental Health Crisis Inside Rikers and How It Feeds the Cycle 33:40 Second Chances and What Redemption Really Looks Like After Corruption 36:20 The Lessons Learned and How Community Influence Shapes Everything 38:16 The Broken Infrastructure and Safety Crisis Nobody Wants to Address 40:54 The Leadership Decisions That Could Actually Fix Rikers Island 44:00 Closing Rikers Island — The Real Solutions and Real Consequences 46:25 What a Warden Would Actually Do Differently — Reform From the Inside 50:26 How Hip Hop Culture and Society Shape What Happens Inside Rikers 53:36 Communication Humanity and What It Really Takes to Break the Cycle 58:06 Why Supervisor Support Is the Single Most Important Factor at Rikers 01:03:11 Final Thoughts — What Both Men Want You to Know About Rikers Island _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka Learn more about your ad choices. Erin Mark has lived with the awareness of death for as long as she can remember. Born with cystic fibrosis and told at just five years old that she likely wouldn't live past 18, Erin grew up navigating a reality most people never have to face: building a life while believing time may be running out. But instead of letting that diagnosis define her, she spent years determined to squeeze as much joy, laughter, and meaning out of life as possible — even as her health steadily declined and she entered end-stage illness in her 30s.In this conversation, Erin and Heather talk about what it means to grow up grieving the future you thought you'd have while still learning how to fully live in the present. Erin shares the emotional impact of living with chronic illness, the importance of advocating for yourself when others give up on you, and the perspective shift that comes from surviving beyond the timeline you were once given. They also explore grief that exists beyond death — grieving health, fertility, identity, and the life you imagined for yourself — while holding space for joy at the same time. It's a powerful conversation about resilience, uncertainty, love, and what can happen when someone refuses to stop fighting for your life.Resources & Ways to ConnectErin Mark Website: https://www.erinmark.com/Jake's Help from Heaven Website: http://jakeshelpfromheaven.org/Jake's Help from Heaven Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jakeshelpJake's Help from Heaven Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jakeshelpAPOY Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aplaceofyespodcastHeather's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heathersstraughterOur YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@aplaceofyespodcastFor more of Heather's writing and thoughts: https://ohheather.substack.com/Everything's Jakey (Substack): https://everythingsjakey.substack.com/

In one of our bravest, raw, and most vulnerable episodes, my friend Rod Gardner (married father of 5, lives in Northern Utah, dentist, age 60) shares his story/new book called “Second Change Again: A Dentist's Journey from Professional Success to Prison, Addiction, and Ultimate Redemption”. Rod shares how drugs became a coping mechanism to deal/escape with the anxiety/scrupulosity he experiences as a teenager. He talks about putting this all behind him for his mission and the first part of his marriage—and then how the cycle came back to escape/deal with the stress of dental school. Rod talks about how that cycle repeated itself—getting worse and worse—until almost all hope was lost. Rod talks about kneeling in prayer in the 5-person jail cell—at the end of his rope—and how that was the beginning of hope/peace which led to sustained recovery (back with his wife Jill, family, regained his dental license and practice, rebaptized). I will never forget Rod talking about praying in the jail cell (and the inmates that ended up joining him). Rod concludes the podcast talking about his love and support for his queer son Kaden and his partner—the first time they came to the home—and his how his heart was full of love, a big hug, and support for both of them. Rod talks about his mighty change of heart from his earlier years to where is his now to love all of God's children. Super powerful podcast. I encourage everyone to listen/share this episode and read Rod's book. If you are in a tough spot—feeling alone and losing hope—please listen and share Rod's podcast/book. Thank you Rod for your courage to share your story. You give all of us more hope and help us better understand God's love for each of us. You are a good man. The ducttape solution, although tactically sound, is hot and painful to remove. I would like to go to the single-plate solution in back. What I am worried about is repeated hits to that area with .308 ammunition. I have a high-risk security job and I fear that I would be the target for repeated long-distance shots to my back. Are any of you aware of a thicker plate that could stop, say, .338 Lapua or something like that? Is there a better way to do the second plate? BTW, I am, of course, usually carrying a pair of ceramic plates in my briefcase so that I can shield my head. My SO (we work as a team when necessary) has a similar accessory containing a breakdown NEF single-shot 300 WinMag with an 18″ bbl. The plan is that I shield us with my body and “catch the rounds” while she assembles the NEF. I lay down covering fire with my 23 (Bar-Sto .357 Sig barrel) and she makes the long shots. I will then throw smoke grenades to obscure the area while continuing to lay covering fire. The problem, of course, is when I have to turn my back to run, and then the problem crops up. ~gecko4 Question from Angel from California ⭐Angel from commiefornia, looking into getting my first rifle. In this episode of the Shift AI Podcast, Kurtis Kemple, Senior Director of Developer Relations at Slack (Salesforce), joins host Boaz Ashkenazy for a wide-ranging conversation on how Slackbot is evolving into a full agentic platform for human-AI collaboration in the flow of work.Kurtis shares his extraordinary personal journey, from growing up in poverty in Northern New Jersey, dropping out of school, struggling with addiction, and spending over six years incarcerated, to teaching himself to code in prison with nothing but a textbook and a computer with no internet. From there, he built a career in tech that has taken him to one of the most prominent roles in developer relations at Salesforce. The conversation dives deep into how Slackbot is becoming far more than a simple assistant. Kurtis demonstrates how skills, canvases, and MCP connectors transform Slackbot into a powerful orchestration layer where multiple agents and humans collaborate in threads, channels, and workflows. He explains how Slack is positioning itself as the interface for agentic AI, whether that means connecting to Agentforce, GitHub, PagerDuty, or custom-built tools.Boaz and Kurtis explore the concept of bounded autonomy, the idea that agents should earn expanded capabilities through demonstrated consistency, much like onboarding a new employee. They discuss how ambient agents, gamified learning experiences, and personal productivity skills are already transforming day-to-day work for teams using Slack internally at Salesforce. This episode is essential listening for developers, team leads, and anyone building or deploying AI agents who wants to understand why the orchestration layer matters more than any single model, and how the future of work is being shaped inside the tools we already use every day.Chapters[00:00] From Poverty to Prison to Tech: Kurtis's Journey[04:28] Learning to Code Behind Bars with No Internet[06:39] Landing at Salesforce and Second Chances in Hiring[07:11] First Job: The Kemple Kids Shoveling Snow[08:48] The Role: Slackbot, DevRel, and the Agentic Platform Vision[11:35] Multi-Party Collaboration: Agents and Humans in Threads[12:43] Why Slack Is the Orchestration Layer for AI[15:25] Skills Deep Dive: Building and Using Custom Skills[18:32] Context from Conversations: Slack as a Living Repository[20:29] Canvases, Writing Styles, and Seamless Workflows[22:08] Customer Success Stories: Linear, Engine, and Design Partners[25:22] Human-Agent Orchestration vs. Agent-to-Agent Orchestration[28:45] Ambient Agents: The Tidy Skill and Chief of Staff[33:06] Building Trust Through Bounded Autonomy[34:22] Design Partners: Linear, GitHub, and Graceful Degradation[39:11] Slack Platform Power Up: Gamified Learning with Skills[42:37] The Future of Work: Boundedness and Agency[45:04] AI for Everyone: Small Models, Big Access, Edge Intelligence[47:08] What's Next: Slack Developer Day (May 20) and BeyondConnect with Kurtis KempleLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kurtiskemple/Email: curtiskemple@gmail.comGitHub: https://github.com/kurtiskempleConnect with Boaz AshkenazyLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/boazashkenazy/Email: info@shiftai.fm

Mental health challenges among our kids are at an all-time high—and as parents, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in this timely and enlightening episode, Catherine goes straight to the heart of the matter: What are the greatest mental health needs of our children, and what can we actually do about them as Christian parents? Catherine is joined by Dr. Bill Senyard, an experienced pastor, ministry founder, podcast host, and author of over a dozen books on critical topics like forgiveness and God’s love for the unlovable. Drawing from both neuroscience and biblical wisdom, Dr. Bill Senyard highlights two foundational needs every child (and parent!) has: connectedness and enoughness. Episode Highlights Crisis by the Numbers: Suicide and sadness are rising. Social media and shame are fueling a loneliness epidemic. Attachment Theory & The Gospel: Dr. Bill Senyard shows how both science and Scripture agree: Every child needs unconditional connectedness and the certainty that they are enough, no matter what. Shame vs. Security: Learn why so many kids (and adults) secretly believe God or their parents are disappointed in them—and how that undermines their mental health and relationship with God. Attunement in Action: Discover the “drip, drip, drip” strategy—intentional, random affirmation and connection in at least one in three interactions, proven to nurture healthy brains and souls. A Second Chance in Adolescence: Missed opportunities can be repaired! Dr. Bill Senyard explains how parents can restore connection and belonging, even after difficult seasons. A Father’s Example: Hear the moving letter Dr. Bill Senyard wrote to his son, modeling how to declare unshakeable love and acceptance, even amid clashes and failures. “Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her.”— Yuri Bronfenbrenner, as quoted by Dr. Bill Senyard Guest Bio: Dr. Bill Senyard Dr. Bill Senyard is a pastor, ministry leader, host of the Gospel Rant podcast, and prolific author on topics like biblical parenting, forgiveness, and God’s love. He holds advanced degrees in theology and brings decades of experience as a spiritual guide, management consultant, and innovator. We are jumping into a new series on Jonah. The book of Jonah isn't primarily about a fish--it's the story of a faithful God pursuing a wayward heart. Through Jonah, we will learn together about God's relentless mercy for everyone. Sometimes God sends storms not to punish us, but to rescue us.  This morning, we find Jonah "vomited" onto the shore by the whale, and Jonah experiencing the consequences of him being swallowed by the whale. Even as Jonah feels the results of him being in the whale, on the shore he hears God's call on him - and it is the same call as before! Jonah was not disqualified from grace, and he was recommissioned to carry out the same mission God gave him earlier. This story demonstrates that God is the God of second chances. Not only are we forgiven, but we are also recommissioned.  Sermon challenge: Where is God calling you to obey Him again? In this episode of Beyond the Torch, hosts Todd Herzog and Leslie Nease welcome the legendary Survivor: Panama player Terry Dietz, catching up with him from his current perch in the Bahamas. They open with a touching fan message from Brandon Jesse about how Survivor built community in his life, then dive into Terry's journey — from watching Tom Westman win and deciding to audition, to his memorable run against a tribe of D1 athletes, and the infamous one-inch, one-second mistake that cost him the immunity challenge (and the million dollars) against Aras. The conversation shifts to Terry's Second Chances season, where he was pulled from the game mid-episode when his son Danny was rushed to Boston Children's Hospital with a dangerously failing heart — an ejection fraction of just 8 — requiring open-heart surgery and ultimately a heart transplant on 9/11, 2016, after nearly 90 days in the hospital. Terry updates us on Danny today: now engaged, thriving in San Jose, and the true "second chance" of Terry's life. The episode also covers the current Survivor 50 season (heaping praise on Rick Devens and discussing Oscar's big gameplay mistake), a lively debate about whether Terry would ever play again, the news that Todd has been invited to the live finale in LA, Leslie sharing that her husband just had successful prostate cancer surgery, and warm reflections on the unique brotherhood that Survivor creates among players and fans alike.Special thanks to the best Whiskey on the Planet Watertown Whiskey! Montes De Oca translated from Spanish means "mountains of Oca or bird similar to a goose" -from an area in the Basque region of Spain in the north central mountains, and that is where Carlyn's family originally emigrated from. Carlyn is a first generation Mexican American who was raised in California. It wasn't until she took a DNA test in her 50's, just to see what her more specific lineage was, that she found out some shocking news. There was a discrepancy in one of the results that caught Carlyn's eye, but being busy, she let it go. She had noticed that all of her siblings seemed to be very quiet and distant once she started asking questions. Had she spent more time on fully reading the results, she would have seen that there was a woman's name listed as a potential relative. "Ancestry DNA doesn't lie" is what Carlyn was told by this stranger's husband. Carlyn's mother and father made a life changing decision based on love and compassion . They didn't hesitate or dwell on the possible difficult road ahead. They did what they felt was the right thing to do. a sister and two brothers that live nearby plus 2 other siblings in  Mexico  that were a lot older. As teens, Carlyn's older siblings suddenly had an adopted baby sister and were told by their parents, not to tell anyone, including their baby sister that she was adopted for fear of someone trying to take her away.  You will never tell her she's adopted because if you do, there are  people out there that may try and hurt her. " Children born out of wedlock where not looked at fondly and Carlyn's parents didn't want that stigma to follow her. When I asked my guest how she's been handling all this upheaval, she says "it's a paradox. Life works in mysterious ways and it gives you the information that you need at exactly at the right time. The first year was really  hard and this is tough stuff."  Her parents  were both strong people and they raised their children to be tough. "It's hard to have the rug pulled out from under you and to loose your identity in the snap of the fingers." I guess you never know what you'll find in your results  when you do a DNA test. It especially is difficult when you get conflicting results as an adult vs a baby or child. Carlyn mentioned LDA or Late Discovery Adoptees. I've attached the link if you'd like further information.        https://www.latediscoveryadoptees.com/ It's been a journey for Carlyn since she got this startling news of being adopted. In the subsequent years, she's done a lot of soul searching and research. She's interviewed many people and family members, found her biological mother and adopted her dog, Grace. November  2022, Carlyn released her most recent book "Junkyard Girl: a Memoir of Ancestry, Family Secrets and Second Chances."  Mary was known for being  very over protective of her daughter and it in fact it caused a lot of contention between the two ladies. She loved her daughter and felt that because she was adopted, she needed to keep an eye on her for her safety. The only regret that Carlyn really has is that her siblings didn't tell her the truth before her parents passed away. Carlyn's older sister thought she was protecting her adopted sibling, just as Carlyn's mother, Mary, thought being over protective would serve her well. In this episode, we walk through the life of King Hezekiah and uncover a sobering truth: even the most faithful can fall when pride quietly takes root. Through Scripture in 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, and Isaiah, we see how success, influence, and blessing can become dangerous if we stop giving God the glory. But this isn't just a warning, it's an invitation. God always provides a remedy. If you've been given a second chance, the question is: what are you doing with it? Where to dive in: 0:00 – The hidden sin that follows success 2:15 – Hezekiah's faith, victory, and miraculous deliverance 9:30 – When blessing turns into pride 14:45 – Why God allowed affliction (and what it revealed) 21:00 – The danger of not giving God the glory 29:30 – What are you doing with your second chance? 38:30 – Hezekiah vs. Manasseh: two very different responses 50:00 – God's justice, mercy, and the real consequence of sin 1:02:00 – The remedy: humility, repentance, and returning to God 1:09:00 – The power and greatness of God (Isaiah 40) 1:12:00 – Final encouragement and prayer About your host: Jaime Luce' testimony has daunting personal mountains and treacherous financial valleys. She was trapped in day-to-day stress and couldn't see a way forward. But how she started is not how she finished! And she wants you to know God has a plan for your life too, no matter how tough it seems. Today, Jaime has been married to the love of her life for almost three decades, owns two companies, and has become an author and podcaster. God's way is always the blessed way!
