Tonight's Jazz Feature is a tribute to tenor saxophonist/composer/bandleader Benny Golson. Benny was one of the real shining lights on the Jazz of the 50's, 60's,70's and right up to the present. He passed away peacefully at age 95 at his home in New York. He was born in Philadelphia on January 25, 1929 and dies on September 21, 2024. Benny grew up in the Jazz rich atmosphere of Philadelphia and associated with the Heath brothers, John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Philly Joe Jones, Ray Bryant and so many others. He composed some eternal Jazz standards like "I'll Remember Clifford", "Stablemates", "Whisper Not", "Along Came Betty" and so many others. He developed his skills in R&B bands and Tadd Dameron's band, Dizzy Gillespie's big band of the 50's and then Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, He then formed The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer and later moved to L.A. and wrote for TV and movies and returned to active Jazz playing in the 80's and right up until his passing. Tonight's Jazz feature is one fine date called "Benny Golson and The Philadelphians" with an all Philadelphia cast including the young phenomenon Lee Morgan on trumpet, Ray Bryant on piano, Percy heath on bass and the great Philly Joe Jones on drums. It was done in December 1958 and released originally on United Artist Records. It's a fine presentation of Benny's organizing talents, his playing and writing and arranging. In tribute to Benny Golson tonight!

Jam Notes: Robert was unable to make it on this particular day, but we had all the mics setup so we ran some of our book just to get some more recordings that we thought would be solid. Some good stuff happened during this rehearsal. In particular, the solos on You Dont Know What Love is are very good, as is our take of Reese Richardsons Peace.

Tritones at Dana Thalheimer's House. Ben forgot to bring his MIDI cord today so we had to use the onboard samples on the keyboard at Dana's house. That keyboard sounds fine for piano, but there isn't a good Rhodes sample, so Ben had to use Vibraphone samples for Come Together, which did not sound very good. That said, we got a couple of new tunes read into the book, and they sound very good.

The guitar, the apparatus, the mode of communication chosen by my guests. One of them came from over seas after cutting his teeth, honing his chops and getting lit in the progressive music scene of England. The other growing up in suburban Long Island which at the time was veritable cow country compared to today's population explosion. Both my guests came of age before interconnection, when individual sound was considered vogue and confidence in that individual sound was built through steady gigs in a band with Stephane Grapelli, or David Dawg Grisman playing riffs and chords integrated within the gypsy swing. These gentleman on my program today played alongside their heroes like Barney Kessel and Bucky Pizzerelli Keeping the roots music alive through acoustic vibrato in any and all musical settings carrying the torch for those since departed like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt. Some audiences are more bluesy, some more classical, some are digital. My guests along with their counterparts Vinny Raniolo and Peppino D'Agostino will attempt to engage their audience because Along Came Betty with A Waltz For Debby. But like most artists neither of these cats has had an easy journey. They have suffered from musical traumas, in one case nearly walking away from the instrument all together. It's inspirational that both my guests are headlining the Acoustic Super Group Great Guitars who open up at Yoshii's in Oakland tomorrow night!
Ever heard of Jug? Gene Ammons along with Sonny Stitt? Maybe Willis Jackson or Red Holloway. These cats were mercenaries on the band stand counting off Cherokee at some ridiculous tempo that would separate the common artist from the professional. Take a trip down to Jim and Andy's and you just might see my guest with Al McKibbon or Cal Tjader playing Afro Cuban melodies with Ray Barretto, or Stomping at the Savoy with mainstay Kenny Burrell. Jazz is really black blues and for a long time a jazzers education was on the streets up the corner and round block from Chess Studios where cats like Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal paved the way for younger minority improvisers to develop an identity. My guest is as accomplished a player as those listed above. He whistles while he works playing chromatic hypnotic chords to tunes like Afro Blue, mas Ritmo Caliente and Along Came Betty. He came of age in the old school back in the game when albums were being written about the Tender Gender, melodic invention with no words just sounds- mainly acoustic with drummers like Joe Dukes, Idris Muhammad, Elvin Jones, Dick Birk, the aforementioned Tjader, Joe Morello and Art Blakey. These cats were messengers of music with an understanding of their significance to pass the music along to those who were younger, educate them on the history the technique the looseness and unique sound that would ultimately pave the way for their own careers. His collaborations are noteworthy because he got his shot with the masters. Rasa an Roland Kirk, another free king in Charles Mingus, Roy Haynes and Frank Foster. God Bless The Child Richard Wyands welcome to the JFS

Boite n°5… Dossier BG1929… Benny Golson, le messager du jazz. Along Came Betty is a Jazz standard written by tenor saxophonist Benny Golson. Benny wrote the song as a tribute to vocalist Betty Carter and it was originally performed by Benny while he was a member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. The song was also famously recorded in 1959 on the Blue Note Records label for Jazz Messengers legendary "Moanin" album. The song is this weeks podcasts title track and is performed by Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache Band. As all young Jazz Lovers know, Jerry Gonzalez died in a tragic fire at his home in Spain. The Jazz world has lost a great pioneer of Jazz and in particular a front runner in Latin Jazz. Jerry was one of a kind and the Jazz world has lost another warrior. Boricua Forever! Jazz saxophonist Benny Golson learned his instrument and the vocabulary of jazz alongside John Coltrane while Golson was still in high school in Philadelphia. Quickly establishing himself as an iconic fixture on the jazz landscape, Golson performed with dozens of jazz greats, from Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, and Jimmy Heath to Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, and many others. An acclaimed composer, Golson also wrote music for Hollywood films and television and composed such memorable jazz standards as "Stablemates," "Killer Joe," and "Whisper Not." An eloquent account of Golson's exceptional life—presented episodically rather than chronologically—Whisper Not includes a dazzling collection of anecdotes, memories, experiences, and photographs that recount the successes, the inevitable failures, and the rewards of a life eternally dedicated to jazz. Benny Golson is an NEA Jazz Master, composer, arranger, and saxophonist. After helping Art Blakey revamp his regime with the Jazz Messengers, he co-founded Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer. He has composed not only jazz standards, including "Killer Joe" and "Along Came Betty," but also music for films and television, including It Takes a Thief and M*A*S*H.
