This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpet composer, performer and producer Gabriel Johnson, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Gabriel Johnson Trumpet Interview" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here --- Gabriel Johnson went to the Monterey Jazz Festival at 9 years old - by himself - and witnessed Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard on stage. He went home, switched instruments to the trumpet, and the rest is history. Gabe learned to play the trumpet by ear, playing along to Miles Davis, learning "the excitement inside the sadness." A glimmer of hope for Gabe during a difficult childhood. Self taught until later in high school, it wasn't until he was at the New England Conservatory when he learned that what seemed second-nature all along was in fact perfect pitch. A chance encounter with Chris Botti on Gabe's last night in Boston before moving to Los Angeles led to a friendship of over 20 years, and pivotal connections including meeting the manager of Blood, Sweat & Tears, who invited him to be the band's musical director for a year. From hanging out with Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford, to learning recording techniques and producer psychology from David Foster, Gabe has built a remarkable career full of originality and spontaneity, covering soundtracks, jazz, pop and more. With AI creeping into musicians' livelihood, Gabriel has some pertinent advice: individual artist expression is something that can never be replicated, whether by artificial intelligence or another human. Be yourself, be creative, be original. The rest will follow. About Gabriel Johnson:  Gabriel Johnson is an American jazz trumpeter whose lyrical sound and deep musical fluency have earned praise from artists, including David Foster, Clint Eastwood, and Chris Botti.  Gabe studied at New England Conservatory and then moved to Los Angeles and built a wide ranging career as a solo artist, session musician and featured performer. Recording and performing with artists such as Gladys Knight, Steven Tyler, David Foster, Chris Botti , Andrea Bocelli, Lyle Lovett, and Burt Bacharach, he was featured by Clint Eastwood as a trumpet soloist on the film scores for Changeling and Invictus, and has released a substantial catalog of recordings on his Sunset Horn label, blending jazz tradition with cinematic electronic and modern production influences. There is an entire chapter of Indian music history that has shaped global music in unknown ways remains preserved only in the human memory of a select few.  Sandhya Sanjana is one of those humans. Long before "world music" became a marketing category, she was part of a generation of home-grown South-Asian artists blurring the edges of jazz, global and Indian classical music by a trial and error met with genuine curiosity, rather than novelty.  Co-founder one of India's earliest internationally touring world-fusion ensembles, Sanjana has been more than thirty albums, and spent decades moving between radically different musical worlds without reducing either of them into aesthetic decoration. In this conversation, we try to trace that arc. From an upbringing between Bombay and Delhi, to the nightclub circuits of Calcutta, with first-generation Indian Jazz musicians. From backstage blessings from Alice Coltrane after the exchange of a cassette tape, to the origins of India's first international festival ‘Jazz Yatra' where the appearances from the likes of icons such Art Blakey, Max Roach, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard and John Handy and their days in India in open exchange with local musicians threaten to fade away amidst undocumented history. What emerges is not nostalgia, but a portrait of a generation of artists that worked without the visibility, institutional support, or mythology later scenes would inherit.  Artists building language in real time. Documenting culture through performance while remaining largely undocumented themselves. In the words of Sandhya herself, much of that era was "not presented to the world."  This conversation tries to remember.    Listen to the second half of the episode.   Connect with Sandhya: https://instagram.com/achhamusica https://facebook.com/sandhyasanjana https://youtube.com/@achha_musica   Connect with T.L. What happens when you finally get to mix Spinal Tap in Dubly Atmos? You turn it up to 11, of course! My guest today is Grammy-nominated engineer and mixer Steve Genewick, joining us from his Atmos room in Los Angeles to walk us through the wild, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt process of capturing and mixing the new "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" soundtrack and album. In this episode, Steve talks about working directly with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer; recording their live vocals; tracking the band as a real rock group; and assembling a full dubly Atmos experience that honors the original film while pushing the new one into immersive territory. We dig into the whole workflow - from the Beyerdynamic M500 ribbon mics he labeled as Nigel, David, and Derek… to tracking full songs live at The Village… to mixing the concert sequences for the film… to remixing "Break Like the Wind" in Atmos using the original 1990s analog tapes that had to be transferred from tape box track sheets. Steve also talks about Spinal Tap's actual backstory, the improvised nature of the films, working directly with Rob Reiner, and why the guys are not in character in the studio - except when it's time to sound "more Nigel."We also go deep into Atmos and orchestral recording, Steve's work on classic jazz records (Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard), his remixing of the "Jaws" and "Jaws 2" soundtracks, and how immersive music translates between speakers, earbuds, and soundbars. Steve explains LFE strategy, subwoofer layouts, mixing bass into objects, and why a great Atmos mix is not about flying things around the room — it's about clarity, space, and emotional impact. And yes, we do talk about Stonehenge… the pizza pedal… the cheese guitar… and whether mixing break like the wind is allowed in the control room.Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.comTHANKS TO OUR SPONSORS!http://UltimateMixingMasterclass.comhttps://usa.sae.edu/ The next program starts May 11, 2026 https://www.izotope.com Use code ROCK10 to get 10% off!https://www.native-instruments.com Use code ROCK30 to get 1 month free of NI 360!https://www.spectra1964.comhttps://gracedesign.com/https://pickrmusic.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academyhttps://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/Listen to the podcast theme song “Skadoosh!” https://solo.to/lijshawmusicListen to this guest's discography on Apple Music:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/steve-genewick-atmos-mixes/pl.u-76oNkrMF1JKbpIf you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/ReviewCLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/556

On the latest episode of Milestones: Celebrating the Culture, acclaimed trumpeter Jeremy Pelt joins host Angélika Beener for a conversation that bridges generations of jazz artistry. Pelt convenes a multi-generational ensemble of jazz voices, honoring a defining tradition of the music: the artist as a witness to, and shaper of the times. With his latest album, With Our Community Will Not Be Erased, Pelt offers a deeply felt statement grounded in love, resilience, and collective spirit, reminding us that jazz remains as much about community as it is about individual expression. The conversation also marks the 60th anniversary of Speak No Evil, the 1966 masterpiece by Wayne Shorter that stands as one of the defining works of post-bop music. Featuring an extraordinary quintet of Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones, the album blends haunting lyricism with daring harmonic exploration. Separated by six decades, these two recordings are explored in equal measure as we continue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month.

Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. On October 26, 2025, the legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette passed away at the age of 83. DeJohnette was one of the greatest drummers in modern jazz. He released more than 50 albums as a bandleader and appeared on hundreds of recordings as a sideman — including landmark sessions such as Miles Davis' “Bitches Brew”, Wayne Shorter's “Super Nova”, and Keith Jarrett's “Standards”, among many others. DeJohnette also recorded six classic albums with Naptown jazz icon Freddie Hubbard. This week on Echoes of Indiana Avenue, we'll share music highlighting Freddie Hubbard's collaborations with Jack DeJohnette.  Born in Chicago in 1942, DeJohnette began his musical journey studying classical piano before switching to drums — a duality that shaped his melodic sensibility behind the kit. He rose to prominence in the 1960s through his work with jazz luminaries including Charles Lloyd, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis. During his six-decade career, DeJohnette led numerous ensembles and recorded prolifically, creating a distinctive sound that fused jazz traditions with abstract and avant-garde influences. A National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master and Grammy Award winner, DeJohnette was a guiding force in the evolution of modern jazz.

Today we're going on an aquatic journey with Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage. Herbie calls the title track the best tune he's ever written.  We dive deep into the music to explore what makes this tune, and this album, great. The roots of Maiden Voyage date back in 1963, when Herbie began hearing rumors that Miles Davis wanted to hear him play. He didn't believe it at first -- Miles was at the height of his celebrity by this point. But soon he got a call. He went over to Miles's house and played with him, George Coleman, Tony Williams and Ron Carter for three days. On the third day, Miles asks the group to come to studio to record Seven Steps to Heaven. Herbie says, "Does that mean I'm in the band?" Miles says, "You're making the record, mother f**cker!" After two years playing in what many call the one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all time, Herbie would release Maiden Voyage in 1965. Along with George, Tony and Ron, plus saxophonist Freddie Hubbard. Although it is one of his simplest tunes -- with a rhythm inspired by a cologne commercial -- Maiden Voyage would become a favorite and a standard among jazz musicians. In this episode, you'll hear:- Adam and Peter pick apart the greatest moments from the album, including some perfect solos- The story of the commercial roots of this jazz standard- Where the record got its aquatic theme- Why a great song starts with a great bassline (just ask Ron Carter)- How this record could have been even better ... if it weren't for that piano sound- Where we land on Van Gelder Sound controversy-----Keyboards? Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (born April 7, 1938) was one of the most gifted and technically proficient of any of the jazz trumpet players of his generation. His fiery, athletic, harmonically rich, seemingly effortless style influenced virtually all trumpet players who came after him. Serving his apprenticeship with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, his compositions provided a springboard for that group as well as his own groups, and he was a popular sideman on quintessential recordings by Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and many other jazz greats.

Zev Feldman, a.k.a. the “Jazz Detective,” has turned his crate-digging passion into a career: He tracks down previously unreleased recordings and jumps through the necessary hoops to get them released, often in lavish packages for his label, Resonance Records. This past Record Store Day featured such Feldman finds as live albums from Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham and Charles Mingus plus a limited-edition double album of previously unreleased Patsy Cline performances, Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963). Feldman also co-produced last year's incendiary Blue Note release from McToy Tyner and Joe Henderson, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs. In this expansive conversation, Feldman tells his Jazz Detective origin story and describes how he finds these recordings (or vice versa), he gets specific about the importance of Record Store Day and these projects' tight margins, and he reveals his white whales. On May 25th, the legendary Indianapolis jazz trombonist Phil Ranelin will turn 86 years old. For the next three weeks on Echoes of Indiana, we'll celebrate the anniversary of Ranelin's birthday by exploring his work in music. Listen to a recent interview Ranelin recorded with WFYI's Kyle Long, along with classic recordings from his discography.  Phil Ranelin was born in Indianapolis in 1939. He grew up on the city's east side in the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood and attended Arsenal Tech High School, where jazz icon Freddie Hubbard was also a student. Nearly two decades later they would record three albums together. During the 1960s, Ranelin was active on the local jazz scene, performing with Indianapolis jazz greats like Wes Montgomery, Pookie Johnson, David Young, and Freddie Hubbard.  Around 1968, Ranelin left Indianapolis for Detroit, becoming deeply involved in the city's dynamic music scene. While in Detroit he worked as a session musician and touring performer for Motown Records, appearing with artists including Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. But it was his work with Tribe jazz collective that elevated his legacy in music.  Ranelin co-founded Tribe in the early 1970s with saxophonist Wendell Harrison. Tribe started as a musical ensemble, but soon expanded into a record label, magazine and artist collective. Their work was explicitly political, advocating for Black empowerment and self-determination. Ranelin's tenure with Tribe Records produced a number of seminal albums including “The Time Is Now” and “Vibes from the Tribe.” These recordings blended traditional jazz with funk, and avant-garde techniques, helping to redefine the boundaries of the genre. Ranelin spent much of the last 40 years, living in Los Angeles, California.  But he recently returned to his hometown Indianapolis after suffering a severe stroke in 2021.  On this week's episode, hear music from Ranelin's most recent releases, including "The Found Tapes: Live in Los Angeles,” and “Tribe 2000.”

Producing a historical recording requires enormous patience, investigative powers like an investigative journalist. The journey is long, emotional, and exciting when the recordings are discovered, and the final package completed. This is what Zev Feldman does. He is the producer for and co-president of Resonance Records, a record label that releases archival recordings that are previously unissued. The Resonance catalogue includes John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, among many other legendary musicians. In this episode, Zev Feldman and I discuss his insights into his multifaceted career, how he got started in the music industry and his subsequent journey through various roles in sales, marketing, and ultimately producing rare jazz recordings. Feldman works with numerous other labels including Blue Note, Verve Label Group, Elemental Music as well as own his own labels, Jazz Detective and Deep Digs. Feldman spins many stories about his adventures in discovering music long forgotten. It's music that is not just good; it must be GREAT! Curating legacy music requires a sense of understanding about the elements of a dynamic recording, one that exceeds others in the quality of the performance, the importance of a certain date, and the historical aspect of the show or studio recording. Then there is the emotional involvement with the families of these jazz legends, many of whom become close friends, such as it has with the families of jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery (Zev produced the first archival recording of Wes Montgomery for Resonance) and piano virtuoso Bill Evans as Feldman is just releasing his 13th archival recordings of Bill Evans. Then there is the importance of Record Store Day on April 12. Feldman highlights the significance of this little-known observed day in bringing these projects to life. This episode is rich with music, thanks to Zev Feldman and Resonance Records. There is more than 36 minutes of full tracks of music along with clips of recordings discussed. It was November 30, 2021, when Nicole Avant got a call in the middle of the night from her husband. The unthinkable had happened. Her otherwise healthy mom, Jacqueline Avant, was in critical condition at the hospital. She had been shot. Nicole would soon find out that her mother had been having an ordinary evening at her home in Beverly Hills when a man broke into her home in an attempted robbery. He shot Jacqueline, and then fled the scene. She died later that night in the hospital. Jacqueline was 81. It was an unspeakable tragedy that would leave most people paralyzed, enraged and probably seeking revenge. But Nicole's response surprised a lot of people. She decided that she's not a victim, and she would forgive her mother's murderer.  She shares this radical sentiment in her new book: “Think You'll be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude.” For those unfamiliar with Nicole, she is someone who wears many hats. She served as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas under President Obama—and she was the first black woman to hold this seat. She's been a force in political fundraising. She raised more than half a million for President Obama in one night in 2012, and she was part of a fundraising team that raised $21 million for him in 2008. She's also a movie producer, which isn't exactly surprising considering she was born into black Hollywood royalty—her father was Clarence Avant, the legendary music mogul who managed artists like Bill Withers, Sarah Vaughan, and Freddie Hubbard. Today, she finds herself again a part of Hollywood royalty, just of more recent vintage. Her husband is Netflix Co-Ceo Ted Sarandos. But unlike the British royals, Nicole Avant doesn't put her views through a PR machine. She says what she thinks, and she doesn't have time for bullshit. All of which is why we were so eager to have her on Honestly today.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
