Tonight's Jazz Feature is a round about tribute to St. Patrick's Day in that our Jazz Feature tonight is the initial album by master guitarist Grant Green entitled "Green Street". It was recorded by Blue Note Records on April 1,1961 but despite the date, Mr. Green was no fool! It put Grant Green who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri on the national Jazz map.as one of the two foremost guitarists to emerge in the 1960's along with Wes Montgomery. Green played the guitar like a saxophone and emphasized single lines and delivered these with his huge pure sound. He's featured here with just a trio, Green with Ben Tucker on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. The album consists of five selections with Monk's classic "Round About Midnight" being one and "Alone Together" being the other standard tune. The other three are Green's original tunes. This shows Green's talents in a pure light all the way and marked a great debut recording. "Green Street" is tonight's Jazz Feature...relax and enjoy.

Did you know that Philadelphia Cream Cheese doesn't come from Philadelphia? Or that marshmallows were originally medicine for kids? This episode begins by looking at some fascinating and unusual origins of food names. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/tagged/health/at-home/odd-facts-7-iconic-products-164000529.html Despite the human need for social interaction, we keep shying away from it. People are less social than before and there are real consequences for that. Listen as we discuss why people are less connected, what the impact of that is and what we need to do to intervene and fix it. My guest is Jeffrey A. When you hear someone talk about nuclear power – what do you think? Nuclear power has a bad image. People think it is unsafe – but is it really? A lot of environmentalists are jumping on the nuclear bandwagon. And the fact is there are almost 100 nuclear reactors in operation in the U.S. with no problem and France actually gets 70% of its power from nuclear. Listen as I discuss all of this with Marco Visscher, an award-winning journalist, who has written extensively about climate policy and clean technology and is author of the book, The Power of Nuclear (https://amzn.to/4b2MgxD). Why do people say umm, ahh and ya know? And have they always said them? Listen as I reveal how those “speech disfluencies” are likely only about 100 years old – and why they are so common now. Send us a Positive Review!Series Title: The Profound Impact of Feminine Suppression on Men & their Churches [Part VII of VIII]In this episode Valerie and Nathan get personal as they share their marriage journey awakening to the impact that patriarchal influences had on their ability to connect and really grow closer as a couple and family. They candidly share VERY REAL moments of early distress and disconnection, especially the struggles that occurred before they realized the core of their struggles. What they realized and are still learning each day is that each human being thrives as an individual AND within marriage and family life only as they fully embrace both their divine masculine AND their divine feminine attributes. Before they understand this profound concept, they suffered without a map for healing. In short, if imbalanced energies in church are painful, amplify that pain exponentially within in the home. In this week's episode of Dinner for One 2.0, I touch on the stigma surrounding solo living, especially for those of us in our 30s and beyond. There's still this outdated narrative that if a woman lives alone, she must be lonely, jaded, or just waiting for the right partner to “complete” her. But we know that's not true, right? Living alone doesn't equal loneliness, and it definitely doesn't mean your life is incomplete. In fact, living solo has made me so much more intentional with the people and experiences I invite into my life. I also talk about the Dinner for One Supper Club, which initially I thought would be a five dinner series and has turned into something much bigger. I created this monthly gathering as a space for single women living alone to connect, share meals, and celebrate the lives we're building. It's a reminder that living alone can actually inspire us to step out of our comfort zones and form deeper connections, the opposite of being lonely.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Is it permissible for a man and woman to take a trip together alone in a car? For example, if a man is driving somewhere, and the woman who lives next door needs a ride to that location, may she ride with him even though there is no one else in the car, or does this violate the prohibition of Yihud (forbidden seclusion)? The Halachic authorities rule that as long as there are other people on the road, either motorists or pedestrians, who can look into the car, it is permissible for a man and woman to ride in a car alone together. This is permissible even at nighttime, since it is possible for other people to look into the car, and this helps preclude the possibility of inappropriate behavior. However, Rav Moshe Feinstein (Russia-New York, 1895-1986), in one of his responsa, wrote that while this is permissible according to strict Halacha, in the interest of Seni'ut (modesty) it should be avoided when possible. Even though there is no technical Issur (prohibition), it is best to avoid such a situation, unless this would cause tension and enmity, such as if the woman would feel slighted by the man's refusal to give her a ride, for example. This Halacha is codified in the contemporary work Minhat Ish – Hilchot Yihud (section 2, p. 54; listen to audio recording for precise citation). The author (Rav Eyal Shraga) adds that it is especially important for a man to avoid being alone in a car with a woman driving. When the man is the driver, his mind is focused on the road, but this of course is not the case when the woman drives, and thus this situation should certainly be avoided if possible. Furthermore, a man and woman should not sit next to each other in a car. Although it is permissible for a man and woman to ride alone together, as mentioned, this is when the passenger sits in the back, and not next to the driver. This is the ruling of Rav Shemuel Wosner (contemporary) in his work Shebet Halevi (vol.10, 237), where he writes that proper standards of modesty dictate that a man and woman should not sit next to each other when driving alone in a car. He cites the adage, "Harhek Min Ha'ki'ur U'min Ha'domeh Lo" – "Distance yourself from what is inappropriate and from what resembles it." Therefore, while it is permissible for a man and woman to ride together alone, the passenger should sit in the back. Summary: It is permissible for a man and woman to ride alone together in a car if they are driving in a place where there are pedestrians or other motorists in the area. This should preferably be avoided, but it is permissible, especially if refusing would cause tension and enmity. If a man and woman do ride alone together, the passenger should sit in the back, and not next to the driver.

In this episode of Talking Taiwan, I started off speaking with Taiwanese American documentary filmmaker Hsuan Yu Pan about how she got interested in documentary filmmaking. As we talked about her films, we covered a broad range of topics from the COVID-19 pandemic to parallels between the 2017 travel bans that barred people from seven Muslim majority countries from entering the U.S. and internment of Japanese Americans in the1940s. Time and time again entire groups of people have been targeted and blamed groups. Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/documentary-films-on-the-pandemic-immigration-and-human-rights-issues-our-talk-with-taiwanese-american-filmmaker-hsuan-yu-pan-ep-301/ This led us back to the pandemic and recalling the high incidence of Asian hate that happened at that time. Her current film project Hear, Eat, Home touches on many of these topics including the Syrian Revolution and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. After speaking to Hsuan Yu I get the sense that through her documentary filmmaking she wishes to create understanding so that history doesn't repeat itself and to foster more empathy in the world. Below in the Related Links section is a link where you can support and watch a work in progress version of Hsuan Yu's film Hear, Eat, Home. Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: Hsuan Yu's upbringing and how she initially had aspirations to be a visual artist How Hsuan Yu got interested in documentary filmmaking How Hsuan Yu's early experiences editing wedding videos taught her how to use video footage to tell a story How her work at Bric TV taught her how to find stories How she came up with the concept for her documentary film Alone Together that was shot during the pandemic How footage for Alone Together was gathered and planned How Alone Together featured footage from 11 different countries What Hsuan Yu learned from making the film Alone Together Hsuan Yu views her filmmaking as being about telling people's stories How she met the Taiwanese puppeteer, Mr. Tsai who is the subject of her documentary film project I, Puppet How Hsuan Yu was able to encourage Mr. Tsai to do some impromptu puppetry in New York's Washington Square Park How Mr. Tsai attended a Puppet Slam event in Coney Island, NY and brought the puppet slam concept back to his puppet museum in Taipei, Taiwan The relationship between Mr. Tsai and his father who is also a puppeteer How and why Mr. Tsai's parents didn't want him to become a puppeteer What Hsuan Yu loves about making documentaries Her documentary film project Hear, Eat, Home How two of the subjects of the film Hear, Eat, Home, Kinan Azmeh and Kevork Mourad are members of Yo-yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble How the internment of Japanese Americans and the travel bans of 2017 (aka Muslim bans) are examples of how the U.S. government has labeled certain groups of people as a threat and discriminated against them How Kinan Azmeh was affected by the travel bans of 2017 (aka Muslim bans) How different groups have been blamed such as the Japanese Americans, Muslim Americans and Asian American How as a documentary filmmaker Hsuan Yu feels that sne should document history so that people can learn from history Kevork Mourad's background and family story What the film Hear, Eat, Home is about Hear Eat Home tells the story of Syrians, Japanese Americans and Ukrainians What Hsuan Yu believes makes a good documentary How Hsuan Yu was trying to finish working on Hear, Eat, Home in 2020, but she wasn't satified with it When the Russian invasion of Ukraine happened in 2022 Hsuan Yu felt that she should include stories of her Ukrainian friends in to the film Hear, Eat, Home Hsuan Yu plans to complete Hear, Eat, Home me next year Hear Eat Home is available for view as a work in progress until January 5th Anyone wishing to support the completion of Hsuan Yu's film Hear, Eat, Home can make a donation on the link provided on TalkingTaiwan.com for this episode Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/documentary-films-on-the-pandemic-immigration-and-human-rights-issues-our-talk-with-taiwanese-american-filmmaker-hsuan-yu-pan-ep-301/

I had nearly back-to-back discussions with people about coaching and therapy. One wanted to know if I could see them and their spouse. The other wanted to know if they could go to marital therapy alone. You may already know that I have concerns with marital therapy (yes, I am trained as a therapist). But there are times when marital therapy (given the right circumstances) can be helpful. But can you do it alone? Early in my career (I was still finishing my Ph.D., but was already providing therapy), I realized that my approach was more of a coaching approach. So, immediately after my dissertation was finished, I started a multi-year coach training program. And since then, I have offered coaching services to people who want to thrive, whether in life or in a marriage. Many times, that means I am speaking with one person. So, can you do coaching together? With your spouse? Well, since I had those questions so close together, I decided I could answer it for more people in an episode of my podcast. So, here it is! You can listen below. RELATED RESOURCES: No, this won't save your marriage (but might be what therapy focuses on) What DOES determine success or failure in therapy? She then embarked on an educational adventure in Prague during a sabbatical. Balancing a very tough course in a new country amidst co-students from across the world was a real challenge. But she took up the challenge and had a great time there too. Immersing herself in the city's rich history and exploring its surrounding villages and towns as she kept up the course rigor. Living with a diverse group of international students, she experienced the joy of communal living—cooking, eating, traveling, and studying together. The course culminated in a delightful trip to Vienna, where she had her first eye-opening experience staying in a multi-gender hostel room. From palaces and gardens to theatres, cathedrals, beer gardens, and pubs, her strolls through Vienna were nothing short of magical. Her travels didn't stop there. In Paris, she revelled in the charm of its lanes and by-lanes, making new friends as she explored quaint French cafes and unknown churches, cathedrals and gardens! As a bonus, our guest recounts her wonderful solo trip to Cambodia, where she explored the magnificent Angkor Wat and the vibrant streets of Phnom Penh, forming lasting friendships along the way. Join us as we dive into her inspiring stories and learn how solo travel has shaped her adventurous spirit and enriched her life with unforgettable experiences. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or an armchair adventurer, prepare to be transported to some of the most breathtaking and culturally rich destinations on the planet. Sometimes it can be difficult to admit we are lonely. Experiencing loneliness from time to time is a normal part of life; but when loneliness is severe, or persists over an extended period, it can have a detrimental impact on our mental health. Some ways loneliness can be experienced are: emotional loneliness – a lack of emotional attachment to someone like a close friend or partner social loneliness – a lack of friends to go out with, or who share our hobbies or interests existential loneliness – a sense of being in a room of people you know and still feeling alone According to the World Health Organization, loneliness is a pressing global health threat, heightened by the pandemic. Research has shown that severe loneliness poses the same health risk as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And the demographic most affected by loneliness is not (as you might assume) the elderly, but 16 to 24 year olds. We often discuss the emotional aspects of loneliness, such as feeling low, isolated or disconnected, but loneliness can also manifest through physical symptoms and affect our behaviour. For instance, you may get nervous about or avoid going to social events, change your daily routines, like stop cooking for yourself, caring about your appearance or getting up early, or you may find it difficult to get to sleep or stay asleep. Dr Richard Pile is a GP specialising in lifestyle medicine and cardiology. Also an author, blogger, podcaster, mentor and coach, Dr Richard's TedX talk titled ‘The Dangers of Loneliness' offers an eye opening, research backed, insight into the physical and mental health consequences of prolonged loneliness. Talking to host Gabby, Dr Richard defines loneliness, the causes and effects. The ‘Fit For Purpose' author also discusses what signs to look out for, both within ourselves, and in others, that may indicate we are chronically lonely. Then he suggests practical steps towards forming new connections and reducing isolation. Dr Richard stresses why nurturing the relationships and connections we already have is so important, and shares some ideas about how we might go on to find more people who are like-minded within our local community. Gabby and Dr Richard discuss the role loneliness plays in our mental health and how the two are so interlinked. Dr Richard also explains how finding purpose in our lives is a great antidote to feeling lonely and where to find our nearest 'social prescribers'.
