Warren Wolf's History of the Vibraphone pays tribute to 11 legendary vibe players, including Lionel Hampton, Gary Burton, and Dave Samuels, presenting a deep dive into the vibraphone's jazz legacy. Starting in classical music under his vibraphonist father's guidance, Wolf trained on vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, drums, and piano from a young age in Baltimore. Influenced by his dad's extensive jazz record collection and the local organ trio jazz scene, he eventually studied under Dave Samuels at Berklee, where he later taught. Wolf's rich blend of early classical rigor and exposure to jazz and R&B shaped his style, which now spans swing to fusion.  In History of the Vibraphone, Wolf performs each track as an homage to original artists, joined by saxophonist Tim Green, pianist Alex Brown, bassist Vicente Archer, and drummer Carroll “CV” Dashiell III. Standout selections like Gary Burton's “Captain Señor Mouse” and Samuels's “Spring High” reflect Wolf's influences and his mission to celebrate lesser-known vibes players. Currently a professor at Peabody Conservatory, Wolf remains dedicated to jazz education. Baltimore's thriving scene is central to his work, with venues like Keystone Korner and An Die Musik hosting vibrant jam sessions. Wolf's upcoming tour hints at a possible sequel to this record, potentially honoring Red Norvo, Tito Puente, and Mike Mainieri. https://njjs.org/ https://www.warrenwolf.com/ History of the Vibraphone https://open.spotify.com/album/0raNJZzMHYyOr9R398NJ3E?si=CkIRJL2-Rm2iFwruCESL-Q

Terry Gibbs 99 2. Lionel Hampton 1908-2002 3. John Lewis 1920-2001 4. Bobby Hutcherson 1941-2016 5. Cal Tjader 1925-1982 6. Chick Corea 1941-2021 7. Roy Ayers 83 8. Dave Samuels 1948-2019 9. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, our weekly series of illuminating interviews and contextual conversations. This week on the show, guitarist and composer Julian Lage.  A child prodigy in his youth, Lage has commanded attention for decades for his guitar prowess—he performed at the GRAMMYs at the tender age of 12—and he's accompanied a truly staggering roster of artists over the years, including John Zorn, Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Yoko Ono, Gary Burton, and more. But on his latest album, the Blue Note release Speak To Me, Lage often presents himself as something of a singer/songwriter—minus the singing, that is. Joined by a five-piece band and producer Joe Henry, Lage careens from jittery free jazz to classic West Coast pop, maintaining a careful flow that feels generous but considered, diverse but not haphazard.   This week on Transmissions, he discusses connecting to his musical center, cutting himself some slack, and how Henry helped him know when songs were "done enough." Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on Transmissions? Jeff Tweedy of Wilco joins us for a wide ranging conversation about Solid Sound, his books, and his Jim O'Rourke side project Loose Fur.

Our Vermont tech team was joined by Joshua Moses.  Josh works with individuals, organizations, and communities to cultivate vision and resourcefulness in the face of uncertainty and socio-ecological transitions.  He is currently on the faculty of Haverford College.  Josh is currently visiting faculty with us in Vermont at UVM. He joined our conversation dealing with why and how our tech sector requires the perspective of the fine and performing arts and other, broader disciplines defined as humanities. Is there a Vermont way when it comes to the tech sector?  What of Ryan Munn's contention that rural sectors have never in history worked well for its people and we're perhaps on the cusp of that changing through rural economics rooted in latest technology. (Extractive vs. non-extractive economics).  It seems as of late no matter the subset of ideas we're recording about these days the ever-present issue of our changing climate enters the lexicon. So too a discussion towards democracy and what it means to be a valuable citizen.   This recording was no different and our guest provided plenty for the group and you, our listeners to consider as we all consider how Vermont and our tech sector could lead with smart, balanced and informed solutions to work within our complex adaptive environment.  Big thanks to our friends at the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET) for hosting our recording session. The Vibraphone is an instrument in the metallophone family with a colorful history of American invention and competition. Metallophones evolved from the wooden marimba. The predecessor of the vibraphone called the steel marimba, was invented by the J.C. DEAGAN company in Chicago around 1916. The first "vibraphone" was introduced in 1924 by LEEDY Manufacturing in Indianapolis. It was based on the Deagan steel marimba, and featured a vibrato effect created by a motor-driven fan inside the resonator tubes below each note. Not to be outdone, three years later the Deagan Company introduced an improved vibraphone, with better sounding tuned aluminum bars, and a damper mechanism operated by a foot pedal. It was an immediate success and became the model for all subsequent vibraphones. By the 1930's the instrument was well-established in the burgeoning jazz scene at the hands of virtuoso players like Lionel Hampton. In addition to jazz, the vibraphone became part of the standard classical orchestra percussion section, and the standard college-level percussion performance curriculum. In the 1970's this led to use of vibraphones and marimbas in contemporary Minimalist music by Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and later in New Classical and Ambient. That's where we're going on this transmission of Hearts of Space, called VIBRAPHONICS. Music is by GARY BURTON & CHICK COREA, PETER GARLAND, JASPON TREUTING, HANG MASSIVE, MICHAEL JON FINK, OLIVIÉR ALARY, OCEAN MOON, and GARY BURTON & PAUL BLEY. Today's guest deejay is Max Würden. I discovered Max on one of my deep dives on Spotify. It was Max's Format that captured my imagination. The album is warm and wistful. It feels like a ray of luxurious sunshine on a cold winter day. I don't know. It's subjective. Maybe you'd get something different from your listening experience, but that's what it was like for me. Max is known for diverse soundscapes and soundtrack production . Proficient as a drummer, he crafts sounds from silence. His works span various awards, including nominations for the Peer Raben Music Award. Max boasts a prolific discography across labels like Kompakt Records and Farfield Records. His recent endeavors involve album releases like Landmark and Script, alongside exhibitions and contributions to the renowned Pop Ambient series. Max's versatility shines through collaborations, and film soundtracks. So naturally I invited Max to guest deejay on Soundwave. I was delightfully surprised. Max sent me a mix steeped in jazz. I thought there'd be a lot more jazz (or Black classical music) on Soundwave, but sadly, it's a genre that is neglected on this show. Until now, that's it. Max digs deep and serves up rarities that should become part of your daily rotation. But it's not all jazz, either. Max included the ambient and instrumental music you've come to expect on Soundwave and deftly weaves it with jazz that's seamless. See you next week. Olivia Pérez-Collellmir is a solo pianist, bandleader, and composer from Barcelona, Spain. Noted in Arts Fuse as a “Spanish virtuoso” who adds “a flamenco touch to her chamber jazz,” Collellmir's performance highlights include playing on the soundtrack of Isla Bonita by renowned director Fernando Colomo, a solo performance at the 25th anniversary gala of the six-time Grammy nominated Boston Baroque Orchestra, touring with Spanish Grammy nominee Rosana Arbelo, performing an honorary concert at Berklee for the legendary Rita Moreno, and performances for United States Secretary of State John Kerry, opera star Renée Fleming, and Metropolitan Opera General Manager Peter Gelb.  Peréz-Collellmir started playing piano at the age of five and began studying under Núria Bonells, a disciple of Alicia de Larrocha, and entered The Superior Conservatory of Music in Barcelona at the age of 8. As a young scholar pianist, Collellmir toured performing Faure's Nocturnes and Bach's Partitas and alsorecorded for the National Radio of Spain. In addition, she was selected to play at the Centre de Musique Hindemith in Switzerland on the international performance piano stage. After receiving bachelor's degrees in classical performance from the Conservatori Superior de Música de Barcelona and philosophy from the University of Barcelona, Collellmir became a head of music for the Department of Education of Catalonia where she conducted, recorded, toured, and performed. In 2014, she received a full scholarship from Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she moved, to expand her studies within the idioms of jazz and multicultural music, arrangements, orchestrations and conducting. An honors graduate of Berklee with a dual major in Performance and Professional Music, Collellmir is the composer and performer of the award-winning compositions “Barcelona” and “Together,” which she premiered at the Berklee Performance Center. She is a winner of the Berklee Piano Department's prestigious Chair Award, as well as a Piano Achievement Award. Currently, Pérez-Collellmir is a member of the faculty in the Berklee piano department. ] Her first full album featuring her original music “Olivia” has been recorded in the fall of 2021 (Boston) and in the Summer of 2022 (New York). Her recording has been awarded with the "Berklee Faculty Fellowship Grant 2021-2022”. The album was released on September 15, 2023 produced by Gonzalo Grau. The first album 'Olivia' (Adhyâropa Records) was released on September 15th. A collection of songs representative of the eclecticism and musical fusion that Pérez-Collellmir professes, exploring jazz, flamenco, classical music and Spanish folk traditions to create a universal sound without borders. 'Olivia' captures the native sounds of Barcelona, her hometown. Original songs composed by the Catalan artist and arrangements of pieces by Maurice Ravel and Frederic Mompou with 'Barcelona' as the centerpiece of the project. She also takes some exotic approaches to India and the Middle East. 'Olivia' features 18 stellar collaborations such as Catalan singer Judit Neddermann, percussionist Aleix Tobias, flamenco artists Sonia Olla and Ismael Fernández, bassist John Lockwood (legendary bassist who played with Dizzy Gillespie, Gary Burton, Pat Metheny and Gonzalo Rubalcaba) and cellist Naseem Alatrash (member of the Turtle Island Quartet and 2023 Grammy nominee) For more on Olivia Perez https://www.oliviaperezcollellmir.com/welcome https://open.spotify.com/album/1jXWZWRnCPN2RnLsOOQYOP?si=d38EdcLhQBybbszXUZGCcw

Julian Lage is truly a guitarist like no other. He's insanely creative, prolific, has unbelievable technical facility, but also plays with incredible taste, tone and restraint. He grew up around the bay area of California and was a child prodigy who started getting noticed when he was just a little tyke. There's even a movie about him from that time called “Jules At Eight” (when he was eight!), and he played at the Grammys when he was 12, which is where Gary Burton, the incredible vibraphone player heard him, and asked him to join his band. Julian played with Burton for the better part of a decade, but also spent time playing and collaborating with John Zorn, Nels Cline, Dave Douglas, Charles Lloyd, as well as David Grisman and Chris Eldridge from over in the bluegrass world. He's been releasing solo albums since 2009, and over the last year released a full-length album that is absolutley spectacular called “View With A Room”, and then some songs that were essentially out-takes from that album but took on a life of their own came out more recently, and that's a beautiful new EP called “The Layers”. He has this incredible trio now that I think is one of the great American ensembles - Jorge Roeder is an incredible bassist and Dave King is the drummer, who some will know from the Bad Plus. This is easily one of my favorite conversations I've ever had…and not just on the podcast. Ian is such a fun story teller and he's got A LOT of stories. Also, a big shoutout to Mike Powers from Boston who suggested I reach out to Ian! Alright, here is Ian Froman's Big Fat Five. Cheers!  Call / Text Me your picks @ (424) 253-6676 Just state: ⁃            Your name ⁃            Where you're calling from  ⁃            A little backstory of yourself as a drummer (whatever you feel comfortable  with…but do some self promotion, we all want to support you!)
