Billy Martin on Finding Harmony in Rhythm and Life

The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

On this episode of the Xian Archive Podcast, Matt is joined by music producer, drummer & DJ Zach Morillo. As the artist ‘ MORiLLO ', Zach has released three albums, three ep's, and a multitude of singles and remixes on established labels such as Gravitas Recordings, Muti Music, High Vibe Records, Tribal Trap, Hybrid Trap, Simplify, and Play Me Records. As he continues to build his project, Zach's music has been celebrated by music lovers and DJ's on stages and at festivals around the world.     During the conversation the two discuss Zach's musical path, his experiences with festivals, psychedelics and synchronicity. They also discuss ecstatic dance, musical gear, DAWS and mindset for creating, plus more.     At the young age of 7, Zach's journey in music began when he became close friends with his next-door neighbors, the children of the late legendary drummer, Jeff Porcaro. Through spending time at Jeff's house in Orlando, Florida, Zach was exposed to the life of a musician and first sat down behind a set of drums. He quickly discovered his natural talent and passion for music and rhythm. Making music has been his life's focus ever since.     Zach attended the Music and Performing Arts magnet program at Dr. Phillips High School where he learned to master rudimentary skills, serving as the captain of the drum-line and studying privately with jazz greats, Danny Gottlieb and Joe Morello. His musical education continued at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music where he was awarded scholarship for a Jazz Drums major in the Studio Music and Jazz Bachelors program. During his time at UM, he quickly became one of the most sought after drummers in school and in the greater Miami and South Florida area. He performed regularly with many of the local hip-hop, reggae, and rock bands while working steadily in the corporate top-40 circuit.     With a desire to expand his opportunities across the music world, Zach moved to Los Angeles in 2012. He quickly found work as a touring drummer for internationally acclaimed artists RHYE, Childish Gambino, and Groundation and has traveled the world performing at the biggest and best festivals and venues like Coachella, Red Rocks, and The Hollywood Bowl. In addition, he has been creating and developing his own unique sound and identity through music production and djing. What master sound engineer, Wally Heider, was able to capture from these diverse and challenging venues  are two performances that embody the very sound of the Dave Brubeck Quartet that audiences first fell in love with - described as “lightning in a bottle.”   We talk with multi-instrumentalist and Grammy-nominated composer, Chris Brubeck, about discovering this stellar collection in the archives, the backstory of how it happened, and why Brubeck Editions chose it as the label's third release in continuing the legacy of Dave Brubeck.

Josh Feldstein Verve Jazz Ensemble leader Josh Feldstein has been a jazz drummer for more than 30 years. A native New Yorker who grew up on the NYC jazz scene, Josh formed the VJE in 2006 as a local performing group in the Danbury, CT area. The straight-ahead jazz unit – which paid homage to the legendary music of the famed Verve record label – soon took off with a large local following. After many years, at the prompting of its fans, Josh agreed to record the VJE's first album, aptly titled “It's About Time,” which unexpectedly hit #5 on the national JazzWeek radio chart in 2013. Fans and radio alike asked for more, and so, as an encore, Josh guided the band through the recording of its second album, “East End Sojourn” (2014) with guest guitarist Peter Bernstein joining the studio date. To the band's surprise, this album also achieved significant status with jazz radio, reaching #8 on the national JazzWeek chart and propelling the VJE to its second consecutive top 10 radio album. From there, Josh happily embraced the band's emerging studio recording pathway, initiating the group's third and fourth albums, “Perimeter” (2016) and “Swing-A-Nova” (2017), which resulted in another top 10 JazzWeek chart performance as well as a top 100 Album of the year placement. Looking to advance the band's sound and approach, in 2018 Josh expanded the VJE from its original 5 pieces — headed up by Jon Blanck on tenor and Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet — to 7 instruments, adding Alexa Tarantino on alto / flute and Willie Applewhite on trombone, which served to round out the rhythm section of Steve Einerson on piano and Elias Bailey on bass. Its septet album "Connect The Dots” proved to be a turning point for the VJE, the album hitting #1 on the JazzWeek chart in September 2018 for two consecutive weeks, and staying in the JazzWeek top 10 nearly 3 months. "Night Mode" (2019) expanded the VJE's wide US and European footprint further, again placing top 10 on the JazzWeek charts to much critical acclaim. And in January 2021, Josh and the VJE released its latest offering, “The VJE: Very Live!” — the Verve Jazz Ensemble's first live album, recorded at a benefit concert in Hadley, MA just prior to the pandemic lockdown. As VJE leader, drummer and occasional writer and arranger, Josh selects the band's music. He works closely with Jon Blanck, Tatum Greenblatt and other VJE musicians to craft the group's broad portfolio of arrangements, and oversees the band's steady recording and production schedule. A jazz musician through and through, Josh has studied extensively with drumming legends John Riley and Joe Morello. Josh was born in Manhattan and received his degree from Queens College, City University of New York. In addition to working on the VJE's next recording already, Josh is also diligently pursuing new musical and percussive challenges on his never-ending road to better understanding and performing the musical art form he loves called Jazz.

With Matt's dad in declining health, Jeff suggested that today's album should be "one for Dad." We discuss Dave Brubeck's Buried Treasures, an archival release which was originally recorded across three nights in Mexico City back in May of 1967. Notably, Dave took the stage with his quartet, featuring legendary saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello. As Brubeck writes in the liner notes, the concerts were recorded for Bravo! Brubeck!, an album that had a "Latin American themed" concept. Bravo! Brubeck! was released that same summer and the concept for the record meant that anything that didn't fit the theme was left on the shelf.  Which means a lot of material went unheard for years. The Buried Treasures release gave Brubeck fans a fresh round of cuts from what had been an extremely inspired run of shows. The liner notes, written by Brubeck, offer an extensive look behind the curtain of the performances. A separate booklet details Brubeck's history with Columbia Records. All of this makes for a fascinating journey into the world of Dave Brubeck if you're up for the trip. But that's just one part of today's episode. We discuss a number of different topics, including dads and parents in general, the sacrifices they make that we often don't know about until years later -- and getting a chance to repay the gifts. Some debts can never be truly repaid, but the gratitude lasts a lifetime. This one's for you, Dad.P.S. Get yourself a copy of Philip Clark's book, Dave Brubeck: A Life in Time. It's a must.

A very special meeting tonight as our Jazz Feature. One of the greatest of Jazz singers was Carmen McRae and the iconic Dave Brubeck Quartet in a live recording done in New York at the prestigious club "Basin Street East" in September of 1961. Carman was intrigued and wanted to sing something different and Brubeck wrote a bunch of melodies that she loved and Brubeck's wife Iola put lyrics to the tunes and Carmen was hooked. It was a very different venture from singing Gershwin and porter standard tunes. Carmen performs twelve wonderful pieces with Dave and the Quartet with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Eugene Wright on bass, Joe Morello on drums before a very appreciative audience. The result was issued on Columbia Records and called "Take Five" and yes that tune by Paul Desmond comes complete with lyrics! Tonight's special Jazz Feature...check it out!

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

"Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move -- Brubeck's record company wasn't keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz's rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond's ubiquitous "Take Five," Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That's a testament to Brubeck and Desmond's abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt -- it's just that they're not jarring. Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as its become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it's really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn't just sound sophisticated -- it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it's amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection." - Steve Huey, All MusicSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/polyphonic-press1229/donations

He has been one of my favorite musicians / drummers since I first saw him with Chick Corea in 1980. In this conversation, Tom shares about a multitude of topics including his time with Chick Corea (and how he met Chick), Wayne Shorter, Kenny Loggins, and others. Be sure to visit Tom's website at: https://www.tombrechtlein.com Tom Brechtlein grew up in East Meadow, Long Island and gravitated to drums after listening to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. In junior high, his attention turned to big band jazz, and he became attracted to the music of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. His investigation of jazz led him to Dave Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello and then to modern giants like Elvin Jones and Tony Williams as well as legends like Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones. "When I was 18," he recalls, "I saw Chick Corea's Return To Forever on PBS Television; and I remember sitting there thinking, ' I'm going to play with that guy someday.'" Two years later, in 1978, he auditioned with Corea and got the gig. He remained in the band till 1983, at which point he joined Wayne Shorter's band. There followed extensive road work with guitarist Al Di Meola and violinist Jean Luc Ponty before Tom finally hooked up with Robben Ford in 1986.

Barry James is the last living student of George Lawrence Stone (Stick Control, Accents and Rebounds) who still teaches the Stone technique. Barry is 81 years old and took lessons with Stone in 1957 in Boston College. He has had an amazing career and still teaches via Skype to people around the world. We learn what it was like to step into Stones Boston drum studio and learn from the author of one of the most beloved drum books in history, "Stick Control". Barry took his experiences and co-wrote a book with the great Joe Morello titled "Drum Lessons with George Lawrence Stone". It is a personal account on how to use Stick Control from two of his top students. This episode features tons of great information on Joe Morello - Stones Protege and legendary jazz drummer. This is the last book that Morello worked on before passing away. If you would like to take lessons with Barry James and learn from a direct student of stone, you can email him at barryjamesdrummer@gmail.com or call him directly at 321-297-3042 to set up a skype lesson. Dom Famularo teaches us about Billy Gladstone, Sanford A, Moeller, and George L. Stone - the godfathers of drumming technique. He also shares many great stories from his journey through learning from the students of these great teachers including Shelly Manne, Jim Chapin, and Joe Morello. The lineage of educators that run from these three men runs so much deeper than I ever imagined. This episode features one of my favorite Buddy Rich stories that I have ever heard. Dom got to hang out with Buddy and learn about his background as a young Vaudevillian who was on the road with Moeller, Stone, and Gladstone. Dom is known as "Drummings Global Ambassador" and he does that name justice. He can be found at any given time performing clinics around the world and spreading the love of drums to everyone he meets.
