There's a great podcast we want to introduce you to today, hosted by our friend Rachel Martin at NPR. It's her new show, called Wild Card, which she describes as “part-interview, part-existential game show.” It's a different way of approaching a celebrity interview, with a special deck of cards that helps shape the conversation. It's a really fun show, and she talks to some really big names, including David Lynch, LeVar Burton, Issa Rae, and US Poet Laureate Ada Limon. Rachel was also a guest on this very podcast recently, and we had a great conversation and even played a little bit of the card game, so go back in your podcast feed and check that out. You can also listen to it here. The Wild Card episode we're sharing with you today features Taylor Tomlinson, who has found the kind of success many comedians dream about, with multiple Netflix specials and a late-night hosting gig — After Midnight on CBS. She tells Rachel that part of the secret to her success is fear. They also swap stories about their Christian upbringings, the search for validation and getting things stuck up their noses. So enjoy this episode, and check out Wild Card wherever you find your podcasts. Andreas Varady is a young Jazz Guitarist in his mid 20's who has been on teh scene since the tender of age of 12 under the guidance of folks like Quincy Jones, George Benson and Martin Taylor to name but a few. Turns out he has a new album that was just released - Sunrise - and he's sounding and writing better than ever.We had a great chat and he went into a lot of stuff about his early days and what he's been up to recently. Plus there are a few susprises that you may not know about Andreas. Oh...and be sure to stick around to the end of the podcast as Andreas offers up a tune from his latest release. I think you just might dig it!And if you wanna check out the interview I did with Andreas years ago, please feel free to drop by Jazz Guitar Life and do an easy search for him. Of course, feel free to browse the site at www.thejazzguitarlife.com for more Jazz Guitar related content including interviews, reviews, podcasts and more. Two of the finest guitarists in the world tour together for the first time and stop by KNKX to show off their teamwork.
The melody had three daddies — in 1944 bandleaders Duke Ellington and Harry James collaborated with alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges to develop the tune — but it was those sassy lyrics that made the song: I never cared much for moonlit skies, I never winked back at fireflies, But now that the stars are in your eyes, I'm Beginning to See the Light! Those words came from the smart pen of the great Don George. In his book, The Poets of Tin Pan Alley, Philip Furia praised George's witty use of a list of “light” images and his ability to deal with a difficult song. “Ellington's tune was particularly hard to set,” Furia noted, “since each A section consists of the same, driving vamp-like phrase repeated three times over before the melody finally changes.” In his way, George heightens this musical insistence, using the same rhyme for the first three lines of each section, then “George ends by rekindling one of the oldest songwriting cliches, mixing his metaphors of light and heat:” But now that your lips are burning mine, I'm beginning to see the light.Beyond the LightWhile Don George surely is best known as one of Ellington's prime lyricists, his career spanned another 40 years following the Duke era and included such pop hits as "The Yellow Rose of Texas” for the iconic Mitch Miller.George also worked on special material for many performers, from Nat King Cole and Patti Page to The Pointer Sisters. His lyrics are a study guide for wordsmiths of all stripes. For instance, in David Jenness' and Don Velsey's discussion of composer Moose Charlap, they note that one of the cleverest apologies ever comes from a 1956 George lyric for a famous Charlap melody: The girl in my arms meant nothing to me, I Was Telling Her About You.On the ChartsBut let's get back to “Beginning to See the Light.” A year after its composition, the song spent several weeks on “Your Hit Parade” and charted three times in 1945, with co-writer Harry James' version leading the pack. Ellington vocalist Joya Sherrill, who was only 17, had just joined the band when they recorded the tune in an arrangement that featured co-author Johnny Hodges on sax and Lawrence Brown on trombone.Jazz instrumentals of song have been recorded by bassist Oscar Pettiford, pianist Art Tatum, drummer Chico Hamilton and vibist Red Norvo. Vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra all have made memorable renditions.More recently, Ann Hampton Callaway included it in her 1996 tribute to Fitzgerald, guitarist Martin Taylor and the David Grisman Quartet recorded it in 1999, and in 2004 — 60 years after the song's creation — it was revived by the late, great Al Jarreau. Our Take on the TuneOur latest Duke Ellington number, this is a sweet vehicle for sassy solos by everyone in the band. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

Find this Episode and all related links on the We Are Carbon website: https://www.wearecarbon.earth/podcast-episode/localise-lincolnshire-food-system/-------A special episode exploring the potential routes and benefits of building deeper connections within the local food system.I have discussions with Laura Stratford, Martin Taylor, Hannah Thorogood and Adam O'Meara. They're all based in my home county of Lincolnshire, UK. As we learn about their individual roles within creating a more sustainable food system here we also explore the need to connect to dots between local efforts. There are obvious ways that becoming more localised with our food systems can be of benefit to looking after both the climate and economic resilience. There's the reduction in delivery miles and waste, and the perhaps more significant yet less understood aspects that come from nurturing the soil and ecosystems through the ways that we farm. Remember, it's not what we eat that determines its impact, but how it's produced.Building connections between local farmers and consumers may be our easiest path for making sustainable food choices. But how do we make that happen at any kind of scale and convenience? It's a solution that depends upon connection, communication and collaboration between people who may be close together physically, but have little awareness or involvement with one another besides. And that's why this episode brings together a number of guests all located in the same county. We're exploring not only how producers can support nature, but how they can support one another, and the requirement for community involvement.Wherever you are in the world, there's likely a similar level of dedication and passion somewhere close by, often it's just going under the radar. So this episode is really about highlighting the role of all of us, regardless of location, in making local food possible. As Laura will put it, it's about calling out to the curious!Use the timestamps below to identify who's speaking when.00:00:00 - Introduction00:03:40 - Laura Stratford - The need and vision for a local, sustainable food system.00:23:42 - Martin Taylor - Growing in local soil to look after nature & reduce delivery miles.00:40:22 - Hannah Thorogood - Permaculture, rare breeds and regenerative grazing.01:00:40 - Adam O'Meara - Sourdough, cheese & connecting with local community.01:12:56 - Mixed guest - the vision for a good local food system.01:17:30 - Laura Stratford - who has a role?01:20:12 - Shout out to other local Lincolnshire food producers!
Percussion Discussion - Episode 114 - Ian Palmer.Joining me today is my good Friend Ian Palmer.Ian is a remarkable drummer that has played at the highest level from a very young age, he has gone on to play for the likes of Ray Russell Music, The Ghosts, Martin Taylor, Randy Brecker, Mark Egan, Mo Foster, Alan Price, Leo Sayer, Roy Wood, Jane McDonald and many more!We talk about so much in this conversation including Ian's passion for constant learning from lessons with the legendary Joe Morello in New York through to lessons with Ian's friend and mentor Dom Famularo and funk drumming legend David garibaldi Ian also tells us about a recent recording with American composer, arranger and guitarist Richard Niles, a band that was packed to the rafters with the most talented musicians you could ever wish to hear, the result is the album Niles Smiles, a beatifully crafted album that is now released and available for everyone to hear. This album showcases Ian's wonderful and tasteful drumming style perfectly. As well as being a superb drummer, Ian has another side to his career, an airline pilot for Virgin Atlantic, this puts him in a pretty exclusive club of musicians that fly aeroplanes including Bruce Dickinson and former Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse. This was a fantastic conversation (as i knew it would be) Ian, thanks so much for giving up your time to do it!www.ianpalmer.com

The guitar, the apparatus, the mode of communication chosen by my guests. One of them came from over seas after cutting his teeth, honing his chops and getting lit in the progressive music scene of England. The other growing up in suburban Long Island which at the time was veritable cow country compared to today's population explosion. Both my guests came of age before interconnection, when individual sound was considered vogue and confidence in that individual sound was built through steady gigs in a band with Stephane Grapelli, or David Dawg Grisman playing riffs and chords integrated within the gypsy swing. These gentleman on my program today played alongside their heroes like Barney Kessel and Bucky Pizzerelli Keeping the roots music alive through acoustic vibrato in any and all musical settings carrying the torch for those since departed like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt. Some audiences are more bluesy, some more classical, some are digital. My guests along with their counterparts Vinny Raniolo and Peppino D'Agostino will attempt to engage their audience because Along Came Betty with A Waltz For Debby. But like most artists neither of these cats has had an easy journey. They have suffered from musical traumas, in one case nearly walking away from the instrument all together. It's inspirational that both my guests are headlining the Acoustic Super Group Great Guitars who open up at Yoshii's in Oakland tomorrow night!
