Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Duane Whyte.Duane dedicated over three decades to growing the game from the ground up in the Swan River region. At Swan Valley Regional Secondary School, his varsity boys teams captured Provincial AAA Championships in 1986, 1995, 1996, 2000, and 2001. He didn't just coach a team; he built an entire basketball community. He organized coaching and referee clinics, hosted provincial championships, brought in high-level exhibition games, and helped develop generations of players, many of whom have gone on to become coaches themselves.He's also contributed to the game as an official, working provincial championships at both the high school and senior men's levels.Duane is an MHSAA Hall of Fame inductee and a Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.

The Community of Jesus was founded in 1970 by two housewives, Cay Anderson and Judy Sorensen. They told members they were "God's anointed" with a direct line to God. Any authority figure they appointed carried that same divine authority. Members were taught to obey without questioning the leadership's authority. I spoke with former member and award-nominated writer Ewan Whyte. His fifth book, Mothers of Invention: Essays on the Community of Jesus and Grenville Christian College, details life inside this cult and its affiliated boarding school in Canada. Ewan was raised in the group from childhood. He knows this organization from the inside, and what he shares deserves your full attention. The Community of Jesus is one of three surviving original covenant communities founded in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The other two are the Word of God, founded in 1967 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and People of Praise 1972, - founded around the same time and known today as the community Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is closely associated with. Of the three, the Community of Jesus has been, as Ewan argues, is historically, the most politically influential in shaping American evangelical culture of today. Here is something that stops most people cold: the most important best-selling book of Christian nationalism, The Light and the Glory, was secretly written inside this cult. As Ewan documents in his book, this revisionist version of American history, which argues that God intended the founding the United States to be a Christian nation, was produced by Community of Jesus members David Manuel and Peter Marshall Jr. Their work became a cornerstone text for the Christian nationalist movement and has shaped the beliefs of millions of Americans. The number of data centers in the San Antonio area continues to grow. And District 10 Councilmember Marc Whyte is presenting a nuanced position on the growth as an opportunity for the city's economy — boosting revenue for CPS Energy and providing a projected $50 million dollars for the city's general fund. Whyte is calling for managing data center growth to protect the region's water and neighborhoods.
Dr. John Whyte has spent his career at the intersection of medicine, media and public policy. Now, as CEO of the American Medical Association, he hears firsthand what physicians, patients and health leaders are most concerned about and what they expect from the future of healthcare. That perspective makes him an ideal guest for Season 11 of Fixing Healthcare with cohosts Dr. Robert Pearl and Jeremy Corr. This season's guests bring more than impressive résumés and large social-media followings. They bring insight into what people across the country are actually talking about: the fears they express, the questions they ask and the expectations they carry into exam rooms, boardrooms and online conversations. Whyte has held leadership roles at the FDA and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He later became chief medical officer at WebMD and chief medical expert for Discovery Channel. In each position, he has focused on translating complex medical issues into clear, actionable information. In this conversation, he shares what he is hearing now and why the answers will require both cultural and structural change. Key highlights include: Three concerns dominate for physicians. Whyte opens by identifying what he hears most often across the country: frustration with prior authorization and payment incentives in Medicare and Medicaid, anxiety about scope-of-practice changes, and uncertainty about how physicians should lead (rather than react to) the rapid rise of digital health and generative AI. Medicaid disruption and impact on children. Whyte explains that policy changes at both federal and state levels could leave vulnerable populations without coverage or access to care. He emphasizes that nearly half of U.S. children rely on Medicaid. Payment models and physician autonomy. The discussion explores tensions between fee-for-service, Medicare Advantage and value-based approaches. Whyte argues that physicians must retain meaningful choice in how they practice and get paid, even as consolidation and employment models reduce autonomy. Generative AI as “augmented intelligence.” Whyte notes that more than 80% of physicians now use AI tools professionally, largely for documentation and communication tasks. The real opportunity, he says, lies in improving diagnosis, personalization and continuous monitoring. Home as the future site of care. From wearables to smart diagnostic devices, Whyte envisions a shift away from episodic office visits toward continuous monitoring and preventive care. Outcome-based reimbursement. Pearl asks whether paying for outcomes could unlock broader adoption of AI-enabled tools. Whyte acknowledges the promise but highlights practical challenges, including patient complexity, burnout and the risk that efficiency gains could simply lead to higher patient volumes. The evolving physician-patient relationship in the AI era. With a growing share of patients using generative AI before appointments, Whyte encourages clinicians to view digitally informed patients as partners. Open dialogue, trusted sources and shared decision-making, he argues, will define effective care in the years ahead. There's so much more to this episode. Ce whisky, qui vient de fêter son 200e anniversaire est parti à l'assaut des États-Unis l'an dernier avec ses productions les plus rares, et ce malgré les taxes douanières imposées par Donald Trump « On s'est lancé aux États-Unis avec des whisky de plus de 24 ans. Donc nos bouteilles de 24, 28, 40, 46 ans. Et honnêtement ça a vraiment bien marché et nos whiskies ont reçu de bonnes critiques », dit Stewart Walker, responsable de la distillerie. Avec des prix allant de 675 livres, qui peuvent rapidement monter à 3 450, 9 000, et 20 000 livres, la marque a ciblé les États les plus riches avec des clients qui pouvaient se permettre 10 % de plus sur ces prix déjà élevés : New York, la Californie, et la Floride. Cette année, Fettercairn tente le reste du catalogue, dont le premier prix est à 60 dollars. Mais d'autres exportateurs de whisky ont beaucoup plus de difficultés. Le géant Diageo - qui possède les marques Johnny Walker ou Talisker - a réduit sa production à cause du recul de la demande. Au sein du groupe Suntory, deux distilleries (Laphroaig et Bowmore) ont même ouvert des plans de départ volontaire. En cause : une baisse de la consommation d'alcool dans le monde et la baisse significative des ventes de whisky écossais aux États-Unis. « Nous avons évidemment subi l'imposition des nouvelles taxes de 10 % en avril dernier, explique Emily Weaver Roads qui fait partie de l'association écossaise du whisky. Depuis cette date, nos exportations de whisky ont chuté de 15 % en volume. Les grandes distilleries ont des investissements et des connexions importantes aux États-Unis, mais nos petits producteurs ont aussi des employés et des investissements aux États-Unis. Alors, ces taxes ont un impact en particulier sur les plus petits producteurs pour qui les États-Unis sont vraiment un marché essentiel », explique-t-elle. Je pense que cela a ralenti, mais avec le Covid-19, les ventes étaient au plus haut, et peut-être que des gens pensaient que cela allait toujours durer, et du coup ils ressentent une crise. Mais je pense que l'on retourne à un niveau plus stable. Vous savez, c'est une industrie du long terme. Même si on a des fluctuations, il faut toujours penser sur 20 ans. » Mais pour les distilleries qui n'exportent pas outre-Atlantique, là aussi les temps sont durs. La distillerie de Angus, à Dundee, a annoncé une perte de 25 % de son chiffre d'affaires, par exemple. Les ventes ont beau augmenter, mais les taxes britanniques ont, elles, triplé. Fanny & Stella: A Wild, Wild Victorian Ride Ernest Boulton and Frederick Park were "respectable" Victorian gentlemen who found freedom onstage as Fanny and Stella. Their drag performances thrilled audiences across 1860s–70s England—until they brought their show into the streets. Their arrest and scandalous trial exposed the era's hypocrisy and crushed both love and ambition. Fanny, Stella, and their circle lived boldly in a world that punished authenticity, making them pioneers to be celebrated. 2025 Update: Justice for Jimmie 'Jay' Lee in the Ole Miss Murder Case After an 11–1 mistrial and the later discovery of Jimmie "Jay" Lee's body, Timothy Herrington Jr. took a plea deal for Lee's killing. The judge said Mississippi "got it right this time," yet the state still lacks LGBTQ+ protections or hate crime coverage. Both young men had promising futures ended by homophobia—a reminder that being gay isn't deadly, but hate is. Her Short, Brilliant Life Was Cut Short by Violence When Girlalala (LaLa) and her boyfriend, Shanoyd Whyte Jr., fought on November 14, 2025, tragedy struck. Whyte pulled a gun and killed LaLa, leaving the community in shock. Intimate partner violence is alarmingly high in the trans community—but help is available. Timothy Smith Murder Trial Update Timothy Smith and Herbert Swilley seemed the picture of happiness in Ocala, Florida—until coworkers found Smith dead in March 2023. He'd been drugged, strangled, and left in a staged scene. Months later, Swilley was charged with first-degree premeditated murder. Warrior Chris Bearchell: "No More Sht" Christine "Chris" Bearchell was a fearless Canadian lesbian activist who helped reshape LGBTQ+ rights. From challenging sexist dress codes in high school to leading protests after Toronto's 1981 bathhouse raids, she fought back against police harassment and public shaming. A founder of the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives and key voice in securing Ontario's human rights protections, she also championed sex workers' rights and HIV/AIDS outreach. Bearchell died in 2007 at 53—remembered as a visionary warrior who deserves wider recognition. You deserve to live a life free of violence of any kind.
