Pittsburgh has a strong connection to the world of jazz; in fact, you might say it is sacred ground for this music genre. Many of the legends of jazz - like Billy Eckstine, Billy Taylor, Ray Brown, George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Mary Lou Williams, Ahmad Jamal, Art Blakey and dozens more - are from this Pennsylvania “burg.” In this episode, we talk with co-founder and executive producer of MCG Jazz, Marty Ashby, about how MCG Jazz grew out of the organization founded in the 1960's by Bill Strickland as Manchester Craftsman Guild. What started as Strickland's dream to serve and give back to the community, has since grown into a powerhouse program. As a Craftsman Guild, MCG initially provided a space to develop ceramics, photography and digital design education for urban youth. In the late 80's, Strickland joined forces with jazz guitarist Ashby. Together as co-founders, they started MCG Jazz, where Ashby also continues to grow this legacy program as its executive producer. Our conversation begins with Marty Ashby telling me about the backstory to this incredible organization, its history, present projects and their vision for the future of keeping Jazz alive for generations to come
Milestones: Deep Dive Analyses of Landmark Albums with Angélika Beener
By the 1970s, the legendary pianist-composer Ahmad Jamal had embarked on an exciting new phase in his illustrious seven-decade career. This period included the release of Jamal Plays Jamal, a bold project with intricate orchestration and most notably, all original compositions. On the 50th anniversary of this under-explored yet thoroughly magical album, we're joined by the exceptional pianist, composer, and Harvard professor, Vijay Iyer. We explore the album's spiritual depth, its brilliant textures, and its impact on the canon of hip hop thru legends like J Dilla, De La Soul and Jay-Z. We also reflect on the pivotal role of the artist during times of uncertainty and possibility.
Joe Alterman is a jazz pianist who's performed at such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland, and Blue Note with his own trio and alongside legends like Houston Person, Les McCann, Dick Gregory, and Ramsey Lewis. Downbeat describes his sound as “rooted in the blues, and with a touch reminiscent of the great pianists of the 1950s—Red Garland, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans.” Co-hosts: Jonathan Friedmann & Joey Angel-Field Producer-engineer: Mike Tomren Joe's websitehttps://www.joealtermanmusic.com/ Joe's YouTube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UChq5mhnUt3EePioDpWuYalg Amusing Jews Merch Storehttps://www.amusingjews.com/merch#!/ Subscribe to the Amusing Jews Podcasthttps://www.spreaker.com/show/amusing-jews Adat Chaverim – Congregation for Humanistic Judaism, Los Angeleshttps://www.humanisticjudaismla.org/ Jewish Museum of the American Westhttps://www.jmaw.org/ Atheists United Studioshttps://www.atheistsunited.org/au-studios

We'll look back to 2023 with the indelible sounds of those we lost this past year. There were some losses that cut deep and we intend to pay tribute to each and every one who contributed their artistry to the past century of America's music. There is hardly room in the two hours we have to touch on all of those, no matter their contribution but we have a couple from across the pond that deserve mentioning among the musicians, songwriters and producers who made their mark. The past century of America's music has brought talent, wit and wisdom, and the artists' take on arrangement, delivery, and rhythm. This was another year of profound loss including the likes of the prolific Tony Bennett and Harry Belafonte, the boomer favorites like David Crosby, Jimmy Buffett and Jeff Beck, and the musical geniuses like Burt Bacharach, David Lindley, and Ahmad Jamal. Join us.
Drummer Kassa Overall is steeped in jazz and has played with some of the greats, but he also came of age with hip-hop, and his polyglot solo work reflects a mix of those traditions. In this episode, he discusses how music by Ahmad Jamal, Digable Planets, and John Coltrane guided his art.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

KAIT DUNTON is an LA-based keyboardist & composer. Her emotive musical expression and joyful energy have garnered her hundreds of thousands of followers on social media and over 40,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Starting with her first album, Real & Imagined - now a fan favorite with over three million streams - Kait has continued to cultivate her signature sound over many subsequent albums and releases, including her latest single featuring her evocative improvisational style - and nearly 3M views on Instagram: “this one's for you”. Kait's new album, Keyboards, is a love letter to the sounds and instruments of '70s jazz-funk. A celebration of vintage grooves and classic keyboards: the Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Hammond organ, Clavinet and - always - the acoustic piano. Keyboards documents the music Kait was writing and recording last year when her following on Instagram really exploded - now with close to 140,000 followers - and takes inspiration from the music of Stuff (Richard Tee), Herbie Hancock, the Brecker Brothers, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal, to name a few. Together with Andrew Synowiec on guitar, Sean Hurley on bass and Jake Reed on drums, Kait and band radiate joyful sonic energy and groove. In addition to composition and performance, Kait is also an active recording artist and educator. Her playing appears extensively on the Mister Rogers movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, as well as in The Lego Movie 2, Downsizing, Empire, and ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! Kait was an early member of Snarky Puppy during their formative years in Texas, appearing on their sophomore record, The World is Getting Smaller. She records often for film, television and other artists, and has taught at the University of North Texas, USC's Thornton School of Music, Musician's Institute, Chaffey College, and most recently at Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) in Pasadena, where she developed their new Piano Performance program and served as the inaugural chair.
This week on Echoes of Indiana Avenue we'll continue our look back at the Indiana Avenue Jazz Festival — an annual concert series that flourished on the Avenue from 1983 to 1997. The festival was established at a time when the Avenue was in decline. The expansion of IUPUI during the 1970s saw whole neighborhoods wiped out. By the early 1980s, this once-vibrant mecca of entertainment and culture was beginning to fall silent. The organizers of the Indiana Avenue Jazz Festival dreamed of celebrating the Avenue's rich legacy, by bringing world class music back to the neighborhood – and they succeeded. The festival started small, featuring a line-up drawn from local talent. But in a few short years, the festival attracted legendary jazz stars – including: Ahmad Jamal, Betty Carter, Ramsey Lewis, Terence Blanchard, Pharoah Sanders, and more. Join us as we take a year-by-year look back at the Indiana Avenue Jazz Festival. We'll listen to music from artists who performed at the festival, with a focus on local musicians - including David Young, Keni Washington and OmniVerse, The Hampton Sisters, Billy Wooten, Cherryl Hayes, Terence Blanchard and more.

I came back the other week with a bag full of records I grabbed while in NYC to play for you all, but that will have to wait. In the past few days, two of the best to ever do it have transitioned after living incredible lives and giving all of us so much music and inspiration - Ahmad Jamal and Ivan "Mamao" Conti. It only felt right to pay tribute to them both on this episode. I tried to play some tunes, especially from Jamal's catalogue, that aren't the big sample-famous ones, but are favorites none the same. I've done two other mixes dedicated to Jamal in the past, who is my favorite pianist ever, whose music has been so important to me, whose records my dad passed down to me. Admittedly only in more recent years have I become more familiar with Conti's work, and have completely fallen in love with it. Salute to these giants!
