Tonight's Jazz Feature is unique even in the varied discography of Charles Mingus. First of all Mingus plays only piano here and chants, sings and delivers verbal encouragement to the soloists. Also the band is built around the amazing talents of Roland Kirk (aka Rahsaan Roland Kirk) who plays his tenor saxophone, manzello (a type of soprano saxophone), his stritch (an elongated alto saxophone), flute and various percussion and sundry instruments like whistles, gongs etc. In the band too is tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin and trombone great Jimmy Knepper, both Mingus favorites. On bass is Doug Watkins and on drums is of course, Dannie Richmond. The music is loose, free and covers all the emotions from humor to anger and is sometimes surrealistic. This band was formed in the Summer of 1961 and marked a switch in style for Mingus but was still reflective of his immense musical personality. This album was recorded for Atlantic Records on November 6, 1961 and issued as "Oh Yeah!". It stands alone and is tonight's Jazz Feature.

The Jazz feature tonight is an album that this writer deems an essential Jazz album. "Out of the Afternoon" presents drum master Roy Haynes leading a very special quartet. Mr. Haynes just celebrated his 99th Birthday recently. Roy presents a young up and coming phenomena called Roland Kirk on tenor saxophone, manzello (an elongated alto saxophone) and the stritch (a soprano saxophone variant) and the flute and various whistles. Roland is a creative force here and a one-man band sometimes blowing all 3 horns at once! On piano is Tommy Flanagan and on bass is the great Henry Grimes. This album issued first on Impulse Records is a true classic and one for the ages. Tonight's Jazz feature "Out of the Afternoon".
Savage catches up with jazz musician Sam Gendel for an update on his music career in 2024. The pair first met in 2013 when Gendel sent Savage a collection of poetry titled "The Found Poetry of Michael Savage." Gendel creatively transformed Savage's words into poetry adding musical compositions. Gendel reflects on touring in Japan, describing its appreciation for offbeat and avant-garde music. The two discuss their love of jazz including Buddy Rich, Charlie Parker, Roland Kirk, and Herb Alpert. They ponder the trend of voyeurism in the social media age as Savage highlights the popularity of his cooking videos. Savage shares his own experience as a writer and emphasizes that there are no shortcuts to success or happiness, instead encouraging the importance of hard work and perspiration. The conversation then shifts to the balance between the spiritual and the animalistic aspects of life, concluding that true happiness comes from bringing them together. Listen and find out what it's like to be a musician in the modern age and why more artists are choosing sobriety. Enjoy this wide-ranging conversation on the Michael Savage Podcast! September is Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the month, Echoes of Indiana Avenue will spotlight the contributions Avenue musicians have made to Latin Music. On this week's show we'll share music from vibraphonist Billy Wooten and trumpeter Virgil Jones. Billy Wooten is best known for his work with the famed jazz guitarist Grant Green. From the 1960s, to his death in 2016, Wooten was a popular attraction in the Indianapolis music scene. Latin music was a big part of Wooten's sound – he even recorded an entire album of Latin music at the Madame Walker Theatre. Virgil Jones grew up on Indiana Avenue in the Lockefield Gardens apartments. Jones became one of the most prolific jazz trumpets of the 1960s, recording with a long list of jazz stars - including Lionel Hampton, Charles Earland, McCoy Tyner, and others. Jones played on significant Latin jazz recordings with Roland Kirk, Pharaoh Sanders, and Eddie Palmieri.
Iconic British jazz vocalist Norma Winstone joins the show to chat about her life, career, albums, heels and wine. Norma Winstone was born in London and first attracted attention in the late sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott's club with Roland Kirk. Although she was known initially for evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation, her extraordinary versatility means she is equally at home with the standards repertoire, performing with small groups, orchestras and big bands. In the late seventies she joined pianist John Taylor and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler to form the group Azimuth, which was described by Richard Williams of The Times as “one of the most imaginatively conceived and delicately balanced of all contemporary chamber jazz groups“. In this setting she combines the instrumental use of the voice with words, most of which she writes herself. Azimuth has recorded several albums on the ECM label (the first three of which have been re-issued as a CD boxed set).Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thejazzpodcast)

Ever heard of Jug? Gene Ammons along with Sonny Stitt? Maybe Willis Jackson or Red Holloway. These cats were mercenaries on the band stand counting off Cherokee at some ridiculous tempo that would separate the common artist from the professional. Take a trip down to Jim and Andy's and you just might see my guest with Al McKibbon or Cal Tjader playing Afro Cuban melodies with Ray Barretto, or Stomping at the Savoy with mainstay Kenny Burrell. Jazz is really black blues and for a long time a jazzers education was on the streets up the corner and round block from Chess Studios where cats like Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal paved the way for younger minority improvisers to develop an identity. My guest is as accomplished a player as those listed above. He whistles while he works playing chromatic hypnotic chords to tunes like Afro Blue, mas Ritmo Caliente and Along Came Betty. He came of age in the old school back in the game when albums were being written about the Tender Gender, melodic invention with no words just sounds- mainly acoustic with drummers like Joe Dukes, Idris Muhammad, Elvin Jones, Dick Birk, the aforementioned Tjader, Joe Morello and Art Blakey. These cats were messengers of music with an understanding of their significance to pass the music along to those who were younger, educate them on the history the technique the looseness and unique sound that would ultimately pave the way for their own careers. His collaborations are noteworthy because he got his shot with the masters. Rasa an Roland Kirk, another free king in Charles Mingus, Roy Haynes and Frank Foster. "I Say A Little Prayer" Rahsaan Roland Kirk: Volunteered Slavery (Atlantic, 1969) Roland Kirk, Charles McGhee, Dick Griffin, Ron Burton, Vernon Martin, Sonny Brown, Joseph "Habao" Texidor, The Roland Kirk Spirit Choir.

RONNIE’S is a love letter to saxophonist Ronnie Scott and the indispensable night club he and partner Peter King established in 1959. For more than 60 years music giants have walked through the door of a small basement club in London’s Soho. From the beginning of the burgeoning British modern jazz movement, he and King dreamt of opening a club modeled after the swinging jazz scene of New York’s 52nd Street. From its humble beginnings sixty years ago, Ronnie Scott’s would become the cornerstone of the UK jazz scene and one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world. Ronnie Scott was beloved by many, from the great and famous who frequented his club, to the many hard up musicians who were often helped by his warmth and generous spirit. However, Ronnie was as complex and colourful as the music played on his stage. In private Ronnie battled with depression and when his untimely death occurred in 1996 it left the jazz community bereft of a respected and favorite leader. Funny and moving, Ronnie’s features performances by some of greatest musicians of the 20th Century including…Oscar Peterson, Dizzie Gillespie, Roland Kirk, Cleo Lane and John Danforth, Buddy Rich, Sarah Vaughn, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Ella Fitzgerald, Mary Lou Williams, Van Morrison and Chet Baker, Nina Simone and Ben Webster. Location: Winter Count, AZ The true nature reveals itself all the time. It is the process by which you are able to look in the mirror and not look back except to promote the values of Elvin Jones, Colin Walcott and my guest. To swing was never s question for my guest as well. It just mattered that it feels good. Music of Another Present era is finding your true nature in the music of Oregon a band that continues today and reaches into the breach of classical music with jazz changes using world instruments or maybe Ralph Towner on Ringmodulator. My guest was born and raised in Portland and at an early age connected with Native American Jim Pepper who's free spirit is in the same vein as Leon Thomas, Carmen MCrae and rasa an Roland Kirk. The records I own in which guest is featured allow me to expand consciousness and be more at peace to discover my true nature. Oregon is a band that features Polyrhythms and Odd Time they were an acoustic counterpoint to the electronic development of Mahavishnu in the early seventies. The ability to express yourself in a non verbal fashion enhances your perception of man and the music. At times the music takes over, the player knowing that it comes from another space or place and trusting in that sincerity. I sit here today in Winter Count, AZ with my guest in a true desert oasis. Jazz, the quintessential open door genre, has a capacity to beautifully integrate all kinds of sources. From music from faraway places to compositions written and instruments used for completely different genres. When it comes to the human voice, jazz has shown an uncanny openness finding a musical role for all sorts of non verbal sounds. Here we explore the jazz side of moaning, sighing, whistling, groaning, humming, grunting, etc. Don't worry it's all going to be supremely musical, even virtuosic thanks to the creative minds of the likes of Roland Kirk, Toots Thielemans, Art Farmer, Yohimbe Brothers, Keith Jarrett, Don Byron, Eddie Fisher, Guano Padano, Alessandro Alessandroni, Ennio Morricone, Dead Combo, Rollerball, Claude Barthelemy, Horace Silver, Supergenerous, Brahja Waldman, Napoli Centrale, Bill Withers, John Zorn, Wynton Marsalis, Todd Sickafoose, Talking Pictures, Louis Prima, Wayne Shorter, Allison Miller Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/5741842/Mondo-Jazz
Mark Springer - founder member of the group and came up with the name RIP RIG AND PANIC -in conversation talking about life in music & art with David Eastaugh Rip Rig + Panic was formed in 1980 naming their newly founded project after the 1965 Roland Kirk album of the same name, the duo preferred to explore their free jazz and reggae roots in contrast to their former band's avant-garde and political leanings. Pianist Mark Springer, who had performed live with The Pop Group, began collaborating with the duo by playing keyboards and occasionally providing vocals during live shows. Eventually, vocalist Neneh Cherry joined followed by bassist Sean Oliver. This line-up released the single "Go! Go! Go! This Is It"/"The Ultimate in Fun (Is Going to the Disco with My Baby)" on 13 August 1981, with Gavin Martin of NME saying "Rip Rig and Panic tread a fine line between undisciplined wasted and ingenious commercial aplomb." The band's debut album, God, was released on 3 September 1981 by Virgin Records. It fused free jazz and free improvisation with post-punk, funk and reggae music. The music received high marks from NME for their viruoso playing and esoteric sense of humor, with the review calling it "an act of faith in tumult."[6] The single "Bob Hope Takes Risks" followed on 27 November. For their second album, I Am Cold, the band adopted a more commercial approach in their sound while further embracing jazz and world music influences. The album was recorded with the help of vocalist Andi Oliver and jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. The band made a guest appearance in an episode of the British sitcom The Young Ones performing their 1982 single "You're My Kind of Climate". 1983's Attitude was the band's final and most accessible album, supported by the singles "Beat the Beast" and "Do the Tightrope".

This week we move back into interview mode as we sit down with, Ra Kalam Bob Moses. Bob is known for his vast catalog of recorded music and his collaboration with some of the greatest musicians of our time. Bob has worked with: Larry Coryell, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, Hal Galper, Dave Liebman, Steve Kuhn, Mike Gibbs, Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette, Harold Vick, Edgar Bateman, and guitarist/spiritual mentor Tisziji Munoz. We open up with discussion of his upbringing in New York City where in his building lived Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Roland Kirk and Abbey Lincoln. He was naturally drawn to honest, soulful music and was a part of the first ever jazz/rock group, The Free Spirits. We then cover his long running associations with Burton, Metheny, Liebman, Swallow, Kuhn and Munoz. In the early 1980s Bob was offered a teaching position at the New England Conservatory of Music where he still teaches today. We also discuss his book, "Drum Wisdom" complete with Bob's explanations and examples. Bob also has his own record label and has produced many highly acclaimed recordings. You can find this music on Itunes and Emusic as well as at www.nativepulse.com. Lastly, we experienced significant technical audio issues on this show but with the wizardry of my friend Ryan Almario he made an unlistenable podcast very listenable. Please pardon the extant ground hum on Bob's channel. You can find the Drummer's Weekly Groovecast at Itunes, Google Play Podcasts, Stitcher, Podbean and everywhere you listen to your favorite podcasts. Subscribe today!

Weather report; Spring is nestling happily between cool and warm, the way it should be, maybe a bit too dry for the farmers, April showers few and far between, happy days for cycling DJs. Unsurprisingly I start with a tune that references London in the first line, thank you Eska! Your Joni-esque warble at the opening of "To Be Remembered" eventually gives way to something far more full throated and (conventionally) soulful. However it's not just vocal stylings you've learnt from Ms. Mitchell there's something of the same conversational narrative lyric style in this song with it's prosaic mentions of text messages and planting trees. However that's more of a compliment than a gripe and the long awaited album doesn't disappoint, and there's so much that's just Eska. A good way to begin an opening sequence of tunes that have something of a questioning or searching quality in common. Joyce Elaine Yuille's "Chaos" and Liz Elensky's "Distractions" are both "jazz" songs that deal with the more uncomfortable side of life, whereas Bill Laurance's "Red Sand" is testimony to this musician's, to quote Lee Morgan, "search for the new land". A little Jazz-dance classicism never goes amiss as we anticipate another Sunday Afternoon At Dingwalls session, now barely a month away. From the lesser known Don Scalletta Trio to the very familiar sound and shape of Miles' "Milestones"... still so fresh, bold and essentially modern. Dingwalls vibes run thick through the massive "discovery" of those days , Dansers Inferno, "Sombre Guitar". As far as I recall this was a discovery of original Soul Jazz duo, Alex and Stuart when they traded records from a shop in the nearby yard, but doubtless the tune may have a deeper history for someone; this would have been around 1990. Anthemic, bold and as happy as the title might say otherwise. "Billy Ballet" is the heavyweight in the pack, killer rhythms from Babatunde! Brazilian music takes over the back to back sequence in the second hour. My love of Jobim's music deepens with every listen, having read his sister's excellent biography of it's hard not to be endeared to this passionate genius. A word not to be bandied about lightly, but I wouldn't hesitate to also describe Egberto Gismonti thus as well, though his music is not as easily accessible as Jobim's more mellifluous approach, both these Carioca composers could be described as fine distillers of Brazilian traditions as they draw influence from far and wide in Brazil's rich and diverse musical culture. Azymuth need no introduction but Pela Cidade is an early work that only appeared on a soundtrack.... I love it! Moody, funky and swinging, a great ode to the urban! The three vocal tracks that follow are all connected and highlight three of Brazil's greatest female singers, finishing with the queen of them all , the late great Elis Regina. Her interpretation of Lo Borges' "O Trem Azul" takes the tune to giddying new heights, Elis truly delivers a stunning vocal which combined with an arrangement from her then husband, Cesar Mariano, stands in complete contrast to Lo and Milton Nascimento's mellower original. Beforehand the minimal funkiness of Gal Costa's "O Vento" is followed by the plangent tones of Nana Caymmi rendering "Club Da Esquina No2" an emotional delight. Soul tunes..... Michael Henderson, romantic singer and bass player for Miles Davis, and a tune that was featured by the great Ed Motta on a rather wonderful little feature of him talking music in his vinyl room. (I'll be chatting with Ed Motta on ntslive.com this coming Monday from 2pm, after my own show at midday!) https://youtu.be/cpNK5H7QmFQ Whilst on the subject of vinyl rooms, my friend James Vyner made a little film of me talking tunes at Forge Towers.... https://vimeo.com/123658175 Rounding off, a great Leon Ware song, and I love Coke Escovedo's version. Then a tune that had me reaching for the Discogs tab when I was reminded of it... looking back I often think to myself that a wiser man wouldn't have been so ready to shed various bits of vinyl when under the influence of a particular zeitgeist. Good music has a way of getting back at me! Maybe Jeff Tyzik's "Sweet Nothings" just conjured a memory or maybe I was just finally appreciating the groove and grace of Steve Gadd's drums! Had to slot in a favourite from Manhattan Rhythm and a slice of The Rebirth before finishing with at least a taste of Azymuth's of Alex Malheiros. Enjoy... and as Roland Kirk once put it, "bright moments". 1.Eska - To Be Remembered 2. Alex Puddu - Cruising By Night 3. Joyce Elaine Yuille - Chaos 4. Ajoyo - Tashikere 5. Roland Kirk was a musical phenomena and someone that we may never see the like of again. Mr. Kirk who later adopted the name "Rahsaan" Roland Kirk discovered his talents in his dreams. He lost his sight at a very early age but fell in love with the sound of music. He taught himself to play three horns at once making him a one-man band and later added the clarinet, flute, and trumpet plus other sound producing devices to his arsenal. He was a bizarre sight and initially to fans and especially to critics who thought he was merely an eccentric gimmick but Mr. Kirk proved them wrong. His music has depth, soul, swing and passion and tonight's Jazz Feature was the first recording to give him international prominence. It was issued and widely distributed on Mercury Records and signaled to the world that Kirk had arrived. The album is called "We Free Kings" and features Kirk on all his horns in the company of two stellar rhythm sections. He delivers some standards that are not overdone and mostly his own compositions. His accompanists are Richard Wyands and Hank Jones on piano, Wendell Marshall and Art Davis on bass and Charlie Persip on drums with both rhythm sections."We Free Kings" is one of Roland Kirk's early masterpieces...check it out right here.
This album is on so many people's "desert island discs". This classic was recorded over two dates in May of 1962. The band worked a few engagements around the New York area then went into the studio. Roy Haynes, who is now 86 years old is one of the wonders of the world as he is still playing as well, if not better than he was when he was much younger. He is amazing, as usual on this recording. Mr. Haynes for most part as a bandleader has always led groups with this simple instrumentation: saxophone, piano, bass and drums. This group was exceptional in that the saxophonist is Roland Kirk, who later became known as Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Kirk, who is blind lived in a world of sound. He plays three saxophones at once and has other instruments strung around his neck and also plays flute and clarinet. We hear some of his work on this record. He plays, flute, manzello (a type of soprano saxophone in Bb) and the stritch (a straight alto saxophone in Eb) plus his tenor saxophone. He are happy that Mr. Kirk visited this planet because there has been none other like him. On piano is "the poet of the piano", the late Tommy Flanagan. His sparkling lines highlight this session. Henry Grimes is on bass and at age 26 had already played with Charles Mingus, when Mingus preferred to play piano, also Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk and singer, Anita O'Day. This special band led by the redoubtable Mr. Haynes delivers on all 7 tunes. Four are standards that have not been overplayed and the remaining three are compositions (rare) by Roy Haynes. All in all a classic by a once in a lifetime group. Mr."Snap Crackle" lives!!!
