STANDARS SEMANAL.-771.Gee,Baby,Ain´t I Good to You.-VINILOS MITICOS DEL JAZZ.-JOHN COLTRANE - Blue Train.-JAZZACTUALIDAD.-.ANA PEREIRA-BAILA LA LLUVIA Blue Train es un álbum de estudio delsaxofonista y compositor de jazz John Coltrane .
Tonight's Jazz Feature is a tribute to tenor saxophonist/composer/bandleader Benny Golson. Benny was one of the real shining lights on the Jazz of the 50's, 60's,70's and right up to the present. He passed away peacefully at age 95 at his home in New York. He was born in Philadelphia on January 25, 1929 and dies on September 21, 2024. Benny grew up in the Jazz rich atmosphere of Philadelphia and associated with the Heath brothers, John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Philly Joe Jones, Ray Bryant and so many others. He composed some eternal Jazz standards like "I'll Remember Clifford", "Stablemates", "Whisper Not", "Along Came Betty" and so many others. He developed his skills in R&B bands and Tadd Dameron's band, Dizzy Gillespie's big band of the 50's and then Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, He then formed The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer and later moved to L.A. and wrote for TV and movies and returned to active Jazz playing in the 80's and right up until his passing. Tonight's Jazz feature is one fine date called "Benny Golson and The Philadelphians" with an all Philadelphia cast including the young phenomenon Lee Morgan on trumpet, Ray Bryant on piano, Percy heath on bass and the great Philly Joe Jones on drums. It was done in December 1958 and released originally on United Artist Records. It's a fine presentation of Benny's organizing talents, his playing and writing and arranging. In tribute to Benny Golson tonight!

The virtually forgotten Ernie Henry was considered to be possibly the most accomplished alto sax player in Bebop after Charlie Parker. His career was cut short by addiction and ill health, but he made numerous recordings, including these with James Moody (including Art Blakey, Cecil Payne, Dave Burns and James Forman) and Tadd Dameron (with Fats Navarro and Charlie Rouse) for Blue Note and Savoy. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support

Rudy Williams was a journeyman sax player who stylistically crossed between swing and bebop. The son of legendary/notorious bandleader Fess Williams and the cousin of Charles Mingus, Williams is here heard on alto sax with a pickup group put together by Baron Timme Rosenkrantz in 1939 (with Don Byas, Tyree Glenn, Rex Stewart, Russell Procope, Billy Kyle, Walter Page and Jo Jones), the Savoy Sultans (his regular band from 1937-1941 or so), a Don Byas group (with Charlie Shavers and Clyde Hart), Tadd Dameron's Sextet (with Fats Navarro, Allan Eager, Kenny Clarke and Curly Russell), Bennie Green's Sextet (on baritone, with Teddy Brannon and Lockjaw Davis) and the Howard McGhee Korean All-Stars (on tenor, with J.J. Harlan Leonard played lead alto sax for Benny Moten from 1924-1931 and then started his own band with Thamon Hayes. By 1939 Leonard had taken it over completely and had developed a group on the tradition of Moten and Basie, but with progressive tendencies demonstrated by the first arrangements of Tadd Dameron and outstanding playing by tenor saxophonist Henry Bridges and particularly trombonist Fred Beckett, who was cited as an important influence by J.J. Johnson later . . --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support

This week's quiz: On 2 April, I asked you a question about an article written by RFI English journalist Michael Fitzpatrick: “Will Smith slaps Chris Rock at Oscars ceremony; CODA takes top prize”. You were to tell me the name of the original French film which the Americans adapted for their version, a brief recap of the film, and why it is called CODA – that is, what CODA stands for in the US. The answer is: CODA is the acronym for “Child Of Deaf Adult”. The film was based on the French film The Belier Family and is about the one hearing child (her brother is deaf) born to a deaf couple. In the French version, the actors were played by hearing people, but in the American version, the actors were deaf – which is, of course, far better. The winners are: Sharifun Islam Nitu, a member of the RFI Amour Fan Club in Rajshahi, Bangladesh; Mahesh Jain, the president of the RFI Club Delhi in Delhi, India; Debakamal Hazarika, the president of the United RFI Listeners Club in Assam, India, and Ferhat Bezazel, the president of the RFI Butterflies Club Ain Kechera in West Skikda, Algeria. Last but not least, RFI English listener Rifat Jamil Eusufzai from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “Lesquercade” from Le bal de Beatrice d'Este by Reynaldo Hahn, performed by the Ensemble Initium conducted by Nicolas Chalvin; “Bula-Beige” by Tadd Dameron, performed by the composer and his ensemble; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and “Gracias a la Vida” by Violeta Parra, sung by Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez. Do you have a musical request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... You have to listen to the show to participate. We are continuing this month of March with one-off and rare recordings and tonight's Jazz feature is just that. Not too much is known about the leader, tenor saxophonist Joe Alexander except he was originally from Birmingham, Alabama but spent most of his playing career in Cleveland, Ohio where he found steady work. His only other recorded appearance is on Tadd Dameron's album "Fontainebleau" from 1956.. This album called "Blue Jubilee" is Joe's only recording under his name. Joe recorded this in June of 1960 while he was on a short tour of duty with Ray Charles' band. Joe and equally obscure trumpet player John Hunt teamed up. John was a long time player with Ray Charles. Joe and John are backed by an all-star rhythm section made up of Bobby Timmons on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. Blue Jubilee turns out to be a fine solid Jazz album that presents two rather obscure players in the best light. Sadly this album never was issued domestically on CD but can be found on the European Fresh Sounds label. Enjoy a rare treat on tonight's Jazz Feature.
Vanessa Rubin sings and swings on Singers Unlimited. She also talks about her hometown of Cleveland and pays homage to Tadd Dameron.Produced by Billy Robinson

What is this thing called love?

Every musician owes a debt of gratitude to those who have been an inspiration or influence to them. For vocalist Vanessa Rubin, some of those mentors include the likes of Frank Foster, Barry Harris, Carmen McRae, and Tadd Dameron. She released an album featuring the music of Mr. Dameron… “The Dream Is You.” Of course, she shares more than just a musical connection with him; in fact, both of them called Cleveland, Ohio, home.

Boite n°5… Dossier BG1929… Benny Golson, le messager du jazz. This week's episode of WNPM is about Philly Joe Jones, one of the most prolific drummers in jazz, best known for his time in Miles Davis first great quintet. Featuring tracks from his work with Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane, Miles, Freddie Hubbard, and as a bandleader in his own right.
This week I focus on bebop, starting with some soloists: Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey, then focus on some composers: Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, and Clifford Brown.
Mike leads us back, back, back into the wilds of pre-LP jazz as we discuss Bud Powell, Mary Lou Williams, and Tadd Dameron. Then Pat goes and ruins it with a selection from Ferit Odman, who at least had the decency to keep it all-analog. Mary Lou Williams – ZODIAC SUITE; Tadd Dameron – COMPLETE CAPITOL AND BLUE NOTE RECORDINGS OF FATS NAVARRO AND TADD DAMERON, DISC ONE; Bud Powell – COMPLETE VERVE RECORDINGS, DISC ONE (JAZZ GIANT & THE GENIUS OF BUD POWELL); Ferit Odman – DAMERONIA WITH STRINGS
As this is Jazz Festival month, The Jazz Show is presenting some classic live performances by the greats in concert or in clubs and we'll continue this until the end of the month. Expect to hear tonight: Charles Mingus, Tadd Dameron and His Band with Fats Navarro, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk with a Big Band, Art Blakey with Clifford Brown and much more. Live music is best and some of the best will be heard tonight....tune in!

This is a Birthday celebration to one of our great living Jazz Masters. Today (January 25) marks the 87th Birthday of tenor saxophonist/composer/arranger and Jazz Master Benny Golson. Golson has been a part of Jazz history since breaking into the bands of Tadd Dameron, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and then forming his own groups along with his important band The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer. Tonight's Jazz Feature is an album that features his mellifluous tenor saxophone playing unfettered by complex arrangements hence the album's title..."Free". Golson is heard here with the "poet of the piano", Tommy Flanagan, bassist Ron Carter and the ubiquitous Arthur Taylor on drums. Two Golson originals are on this set and an intriguing original by obscure pianist Will Davis called "Sock Cha". The rest of the six tunes are made up of good quality standards. "Free" is a testament to the wonderful playing of Benny Golson who somehow combines the sound of his early mentors, Don Byas and Lucky Thompson with his very modern concept. No one sounds like Benny and a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mr. Golson!
O.K. so maybe I could have dug even deeper, but hopefully you'll appreciate that with the birth of my twin boys, crate diggin' time is limited, so recourse to few old favourites in this selection. Nevertheless it's not exactly obvious unless you're one of those chin stroking jazz snobs. I'd been wanting to do a kind of "pure" jazz show for a while, the criteria could have been even more stringent, I could have outlawed all electric instruments, but I did want to keep some variety. I can't remember the last time I played something from the Riverside label on the show, so slipping a couple into the first half hour was kind of satisfying, great tunes from Jimmy Heath and Clifford Jordan. Then there's vocals, a scat masterclass from Jon Hendricks, Ann Young tearing up a standard and The Metronomes with silky smooth harmonies. I also decided to do a mini Prestige feature.... what's the difference between Blue Note and Prestige, a day's rehearsal.... yes it is the kind of ugly sister of classic jazz labels, more "blowing dates" less recording sessions. Yet of course there are some awesome titles in the Prestige catalogue, Frank Wess' "Southern Comfort" is certainly one of those, soul-jazz with a Latin twist and really punchy well balanced recording. As always the mellow meltdown in the middle is fun to do, it's what radio's for in my opinion. Listening to Duke Pearson's Sweet Honey Bee album again for the first time in ages, the beauty of "After The Rain" left me quite astounded, Pearson was the quintessential Blue Note artist, he acted as an A&R man for Alfred Lion, and composed the timeless "Cristo Redentor" for which he should be duly honoured as it is one of the most beautiful melodies of all time. "After The Rain" comes close to that peak of sublimity. Continuing the rainy theme the Masabumi Kikuchi composition "Drizzling Rain" from his album with Gil Evans is just as beguiling, with a Japanese lyricism, a kind of Jazz haiku. "En Passant" performed by West Coast stalwarts Shelly Manne ands His Men is an early composition by the great John Williams from U.S. tv series Checkmate, Williams' list of film credits is ridiculous , probably the most successful composer of the twentieth century? All that instrumental grace is followed by a trio of vocal cuts with a morning theme....lushness from Carmen McRae, the brilliant Lorez Alexandria, and Andy Bey ripping some conscious flavour through Gary Bartz NTU Troops leftfoot jazz-funk. Closing the show the last sequence gets lowdown and funky, and a bit abstract! Drums and basslines, a touch of James Brown in Roy Haynes' "Guadalupe", and some electronic undertow in Julian Priester's " Love Love" which I played just a portion of as it covers a whole side. Shame that I only squeezed a the first bit of Monette Sudler's "Brighter Days For You" as it takes me back to my early days of The Cosmic Jam all those years ago.... still love it, and the title says it all. This great band was based in San Francisco and was the brain child of tenor and soprano saxophonist Mel Martin who organized this band in the early 1980's. Mel is a well known teacher, lecturer, and a player who among others has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Carter and so many others plus pop groups like Azteca, Tower of power and Cold Blood. Mel picked some of the very best players in the Bay Area like the great John Handy on alto saxophone. John had worked with Charles Mingus and Randy Weston and led his own groups and was an icon in San Francisco by the time this record was made in February 1984. Warren Gale is on trumpet and Gale should be more widely recognized as he is a great player with a healthy brassy sound. George Cables is on piano and there isn't much more to say about a guy who is one of the world's greatest piano players. Frank Tusa from the east coast had played with Dave Liebman's Lookout Farm and the late Eddie Marshall on drums had worked with just about everyone in the Bay Area. Two of the tunes are by Mel Martin (the opener and the closer) one is a wonderful arrangement of Tadd Dameron's "On a Misty Night". Frank Tusa wrote one. Eddie Marshall also wrote one and Mel Martin arranged two great tunes by Thelonious Monk called "Evidence" and "Monk's Mood". Bebop and Beyond is a great band and deserves to be heard so here it is!
One of Jazz music's greatest drummers was Joseph Rudolph Jones who was better known as "Philly Joe" Jones to distinguish him from the older drummer who was associated with Count Basie: Jo (Jonathan) Jones. One of Philly Joe's last major projects was organizing a 10 piece band to play and revive the music of one of the most important composers in Jazz: Tadd Dameron. The band was called "Dameronia" and recorded two fine albums for the independent Uptown label. One has just been re-issued on CD and has won many accolades this year as "Re-issue of The Year". It was recorded in 1983 and features along with Philly Joe, who was one of Dameron's closest friends, many people who had worked with Tadd. Tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin is one of the prominent soloists but others are heard to good advantage like pianist Walter Davis Jr.,baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne, alto saxophonist Frank Wess, trombonist Benny Powell and others. The original Dameron arrangements were collated by trumpeter Don Sickler who was a great help to Philly Joe in putting this project together. This is a great tribute to Tadd Dameron, who not only was one of pioneers of Modern Jazz but one of it's greatest composers who should be mentioned along with Monk, Mingus and Ellington. Enjoy Dameronia!
Charlie Rouse, the underrated tenor saxophonist, was one of the great individual stylists on his horn and he rose to fame as Thelonious Monk's saxophonist. He was with Mr. Monk for eleven years. Red Rodney was with Charlie Parker for three years in the early 1950's. Rodney and Rouse joined up in 1984 for this fine session of good Jazz tunes and one standard. They picked an excellent rhythm section in the persons of the late Albert Dailey on piano, Cecil McBee on bass and a young Kenny Washington on drums. Trumpeter/arranger Don Sickler wrote some fine arrangements for the horns and made them sound like a 'working' band. Tunes by Tadd Dameron, Gigi Gryce and Miles Davis etc. make up the repertoir. "Social Call" is a minor classic by two great, legendary musicians.....Charlie Rouse and Red Rodney.
