Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
We have Tina Tempest on the show today. Tina, or Chunky, completed a SOBO thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2009. The trail had such an impact upon her life, that she and her husband, Brett, ultimately opened the Quarter Way Inn, a hostel near Marion, Virginia. Tina's breakfast at the hostel is the stuff of legend! But it is one of her side businesses that we're talking about today, as Tina is the owner of Bead By Bead Adventures, producing necklaces for many of the long distance trails, including two that I wear. There are plenty of ways to follow Tina, either online or in person. Check out these links: See Tina in person: AT Gateways at Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia on February 28 - March 2, 2025. Appalachian Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia on May 16-18, 2025 Follow Tina online: Bead by Bead Adventures: Necklaces that are maps of long-distance hiking trails that hikers (or those at home) can use to track their progress. Her website is at www.gobeadbybead.com, on Instagram at Instagram (@gobeadbybead), and on Facebook at Bead by Bead Adventures. Her hostel: Quarter Way Inn: Seasonal Appalachian Trail Hiker Hostel at mile 555-ish in Southwest Virginia. Her website, www.quarterwayinn.com, on Instagram at Instagram (@quarterwayinn), and on Facebook at Quarter Way Inn Her Honey business is Gather Ye Honey: Pure honey and beeswax candles from Ceres, VA and Charlotte, NC. That website is at www.gatheryehoney.com, her Instagram is at Instagram (@gatheryehoney), while her Facebook is at Gather Ye Honey We also caught up with one of our Mighty Blue Class of 2025 members, Dave Santi. Dave and I talked through his pack and the choices he has made for his upcoming thru-hike in March. The Georgia Death Race is one of those legendary races on the East Coast, it's a point-to-point 70ish mile race through the North Georgia mountains. On the chat, we've got Matthew Johnson from Georgia, Josh Lockwood, and Mr. Pizza Gut himself... Neil Murphy. Matthew Johnson is a guy who I've ran against before and these North Georgia mountains are his home terf. He's done races like the FATS 50k, the Sky to Summit, Sweet H2O, and the Quest for the Crest. Josh Lockwood was done races like the Long Haul 100, the Pinellas Trail Challenge, Whispering Pines, and Death at Depuis! Neil Murphy has now been out to the Georgia Death Race 8 times between volunteering and racing! His 2017 go at the race left him famous for the Pizza Gut meme. Whether know him has the Pizza Gut Guy, or not... He's done races like the Vermont Spartan Ultra Beast, Forgotten Florida 100, Spartan Death Race, and the No Business 100! The Georgia Death Race is a 74ish mile point-to-point race from Byron Herbert Reece Farm in Blairsville, Ga to Amicalola Falls State Park. The race has 16,000 ft of climbing and 16,000 ft of descent. It is relentless.
Today we have a special episode for you all that love to suffer. You won't suffer through this episode, but you will hear 4 different stories and experiences from runners that have and will have experienced the 'Georgia Death Race.'For those of you that DON'T know what the GDR is, the Georgia Death Race is a 74 ISH mile trail running race from Vogel State Park to Amicalola Falls State Park in North Georgia. Runners are required to carry a 1 lb railroad spike the duration of the race. If you finish then you throw this nail in the coffin and get an engraved spike. The race has 16,000 ft of climbing and 16,000 ft of descent. It is relentless. IT has been called the craziest and most fun race East of the Rockies. . This is the most watched, sought after and desired ultra marathon on the East Coast. You will hear 4 sides of the story:First we have Andrew Miller. Now residing in the PNW, Andrew is a beast on the North Georgia trails. He was won the GDR 3 times and still holds the course record. A winner of the prestigious 'Western States' (with a golden ticket from his GDR win!). He is a wealth of knowledge on how to be fast and efficient on the trails. Check out his coaching serviceshttps://www.andrewmillercoaching.com@andrewmillercoachingNext, we have Paul Reynolds. Paul has finished GDR 4 times, and is going for the coveted 5th finish. Living in New York, Paul feels drawn to the rugged mountains of the southeast. He's got some great advice on how to stay strong, through all the ups and downs, metaphorically and literally. After that, Kevin Silvey Kevin is no stranger to the trail running community in the southeast. If you've ran a race here, you've probably toed the line with him. With that being said, Kevin has attempted the GDR twice, both times unsuccessful. Kevin talks about what went wrong, and what he's doing in training to fix it. Finally we have Doug LynchDoug is what RunBum has dubbed, "The Phoenix." He is a veteran ultra runner with an epic story. We will leave it to that. Hear about is story leading up to his first attempt, at the Georgia Death Race. As always, thank you for your support, here and out on the trails. When Charlie Janssen was just ten miles into his Appalachian Trail thru-hike in 2012, he wondered what it would be like to complete a Calendar Year Triple Crown. He found out in 2022, and shares his story with us. Charlie's thoughts eventually solidified and the planning began. His pragmatic approach and never-give-up attitude are clear in our conversation, yet this is still an epic adventure and one that so few people have managed to complete. Charlie is only the thirteenth to complete it. He has so many links to follow if you'd like to dive further into his remarkable achievement. Today I got to hop on with some Floridians who took on the Georgia Death Race up by RunBum Tours. This year you had a first timer on the course Kailynn Violette; Mark Proch who has smashed it twice now; and Joshua Gray who went for redemption. What an amazing recap. These three did great! The Georgia Death Race is 71ishh Miles starting in Vogel State Park with close to 28,000 feet of elevation change ending in Amicalola Falls State Park. The first 8 miles has close to 3,500 feet of elevation change, including the 3.8 mile, 2,300 ft. climb up and over the summit of Coosa Bald. This course takes you to Duncan Ridge to see the sunrise over the back of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia, and the Toccoa Swinging Bridge and Amicalola Falls.
On this Episode, Charlotte Curtis tells us about running OCR races with minimal running early on, and then transitioning to ultra running during 2020. She has done a lot of ultra races in a short amount of time, and has done very well. We go over a few of those, but especially her most recent 2nd place finish at the Georgia Death Race. The Georgia Death Race is a 74ish mile point to point trail run from Vogal State Park to Amicalola Falls State Park. Runners have to carry a 1lb railroad spike the entire way. You don't want to miss this one!

The Appalachian Trail Kickoff is an annual event which has been held at Amicalola Falls State Park for nearly two decades. The site is home to the world famous falls, the start of the much maligned approach trail, and a rambling lodge with spectacular views. Each year hundreds of eager newbies and grizzled veterans gather here to swap stories and soak up wisdom. For many it is a kind of family reunion, for others, a wake up call. The kickoff lasts three days, so there's plenty to hear. Enough for a few episodes, for sure. In this installment, Green Giant and Voldemort share their stories while bringing you with them to the festivities. Daniel makes a surprise visit, and the crew meets with Tom Kennedy of Hike For Mental Health, Ron Burger of ALDHA, "Sir Packs a Lot", Miss Janet, Odie, and many more. In Episode 3, Steve (aka White Lightening) talks about how he migrated from camping in his youth, to hiking with kids in his 30's, and eventually wilderness backpacking as he reached his 40's. In this podcast, Steve talks about how he eased in to the sport with an initial trip to the Len Foote Hike Inn near Amicalola Falls State Park in North Georgia. From there, he explored the backcountry campsites along the Foothills Trail at Lake Jocassee, and eventually migrated to his first solo backpacking trip along the Kings Mountain Trail where he camped at a remote campsite (sans amenities) in South Carolina. Steve proves that you're never too old to pick up the sport of backpacking and that with the advances in lightweight gear in the market today, you too can be hiking and backpacking well in to your 80's.
