Booze, Brothels, and the Dark Side of Portland's Past (Feat. PNW Haunts & Homicides)What happens when you toss two hilarious Pacific Northwest history podcasts into Portland's creepiest tunnels with beer, ghosts, and a whole lot of sass? This. You get this glorious chaos. In this unhinged crossover episode, Shea and Jody from Rainy Day Rabbit Holes team up with Caitlyn and Cassie from PNW Haunts & Homicides for a deep, dark dive beneath the streets of Portland, Oregon. From damp brick passageways to flannel-wearing apparitions, the crew recounts their visit to the Shanghai Tunnels Tour at Old Town Pizza & Brewing, while also dissecting the problematic roots of the term “shanghaied,” historic embellishments, and whether ghost pee is a thing. Expect history, hilarity, hauntings—and maybe some drunken shenanigans.

We love high ropes courses, and it has been way too long since we went ziplining. On a recent trip to Branson, we discovered a place called Fritz's Adventure...which is a giant, 80,000 square foot indoor adventure playground. It features 19 activities, including a 4-story high ropes course, a tree-tops rope and zip line course (that even goes outside), adult-sized slides, an urban climbing wall, and much, much more.Listen to today's episode to hear about our experience at Fritz's Adventure. I went ziplining once. Just once. To say I did. Today's episode is about what it means to create a "Mission Statement." Do you have a manifesto for life? Paul's mission rang out loud and clear in Philippians 1:21—"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain!" (I felt that dying part right before running off the ledge. Six times.) To write a mission statement is a great exercise. To base it on who we are in Christ—and then live out that mission statement—is greater yet. I'd love to hear what you come up with. Mine is my tagline on the blog: "To know and show the heart of God." Sometimes that can feel like ziplining. _____________ Have you gotten your new copy of The Joyful Life Magazine? It's all about creativity. For this we were born! So beautiful. Order yours today and one for a friend, HERE. I love their Mission Statement: "The Joyful Life inspires women to pursue joy and discover beauty in their daily lives by grounding their hearts in Christ and leading them to live and love well—for the purpose of glorifying God." There you go! Pursue joy, discover beauty, grounded in Christ, leading to live and love well. Now it's your turn! Subscribe here to receive weekly inspiration, including some recipes, not necessarily healthy. And a free first chapter of my Bible Study: Lessons From the Ultimate Host! (including 12 recipes.) Food does bring folks together and to God's table. I invited 32 or so this week but divided it up—friends will come Tuesday or Wednesday and we'll be in the side yard. Should be a blast. My mission statement (which doesn't include ziplining anymore) is all about the inviting heart of God. He calls out from Creation to the Cross til the Marriage Supper of the Lamb: "You are welcome here!" :::::::::: Read about Sue’s topics and testimonials at womenspeakers.com How to invest in what matters beyond ourselves. This is Vlog Episode #29: Worst Vacation Ever & Why We Are So Glad We Went#worstvacationever #panamaitinerary #christmasinpanamaYou may already be able to guess what vacation we are talking about. If you guessed: Panama, you’d be 100% right. After a decade of traveling with kids, Panama was our worst vacation ever! We had so many things go wrong, like:◘ One flat tire on the Panama Highway◘ Two flat tires on the Panama Highway◘ Stranded for 5 Hours◘ Renting a private car with no insurance◘ Local Contact not answering phone or responding◘ House Broken Into◘ Car sideswiped while parked◘ HarassmentAnd sure, that sounds bad, but we also had so many things go right, like:◘ Cliff jumping at Los Cajones◘ Seeing the Panama Canal in person◘ Celebrating Christmas in Panama◘ Feeding wild monkeys from the palm of our hands◘ Taking a boat out into the Panama Canal◘ Worldschooling in Central America◘ Exploring the Panama jungle and rainforest ◘ Ziplining inside a massive volcanic crater◘ Hiking in Panama City ◘ Meeting Panama Santa Claus At the end of the day, or trip if you will, while we affectionately refer to our time in Panama as our worst vacation ever, we are still so glad we went! We learned a lot from the things that went wrong, and we made incredible family memories to last a lifetime. We wouldn’t change it for the world! Not to mention, considering the current travel bans, who knows when we’ll be able to travel again! Any vacation is better than no vacation! One of the reasons people love camping is the fun activities they do. What you do on your camping trip depends on the place you go. If you pick a place with planned activities, that is easier. Activities like ziplining, horseback riding, white water rafting and so forth are all great to do with the experts in charge. Take Photos – Don’t forget that this is a great time to practice your photography. Plus, good pictures of the kids having a good time are always fun to look back at years later. You can imprint the memory on your brain and in a picture for generations to come. Wildlife Watching – Whether it’s bird watching or watching other types of wildlife, you can learn so much when you’re out in the wild. If you have a good phone that still works out where you’re camping, you can take pictures and use software to identify the animals you’re looking at if you desire to. Hiking – If you have mountains nearby, it’s fun to hike up the mountain so that you can take in the cooler weather and views from the top. It’s exhilarating and fun to do, and good for you. Just make sure you know what you’re doing and dress for the terrain so you don’t fall. Swimming – Most camping areas offer some form of swimming opportunity. Whether it’s a lake or a river, swimming is always fun for most kids and adults. Plus, it lets you cool off and feel refreshed. Fishing and Boating – Some people like to catch their dinner, so if you have a boat you have many additional options while you’re camping. Even if you don’t have a boat, you still may be able to fish for your food. Check licensing requirements before fishing, though. Reading a Good Book – When you’re camping, it’s okay to be lazy. You can sit in a chair, or if you have a hammock stand, lie in there while you read a good book. It’s easier to read a book outside if you wear glasses or use a Kindle Paperwhite. Canoeing – If you’re camping near a river, it’s likely that you can also enjoy canoeing. You may not even need your own canoe. You can often rent them, or you can try rafting, tubing, or even white-water rafting depending on where you are. Singing around a Fire – Even if you can’t play guitar, you can use a battery-powered radio or your phone to play music while you’re sitting around a fire enjoying s'mores. Singing together is always a fun thing to do. Ziplining – Many camping site areas have planned activities nearby, and one fun thing to do is to go ziplining. Ziplining allows you to see the view from up top and also get a thrill from going down fast. Trail Walking – Many campsites have walkable trails. Some of them have history, and others have exercise points where you can stop to do a different exercise. The most fun ones have a mixture of scenery, history, and exercise. Climbing – If you don’t know how to climb, sometimes you can pay an expert to teach you. Often there are experts near camping sites with businesses that do just that. When you do climb and explore, leave nature as you found it by remembering to remove all equipment. There are so many things you can do while camping, including just sitting back and relaxing with a good book. Don’t underestimate good downtime as well as fun planned activities. Don’t overpack your days, because you want to have fun and relax too.
This is Podcast Episode #24: Week 1 in Panama celebrating Christmas on the Beach! #christmasonthebeach #christmasinpanama #panamafamilyvacationSorry for the serious windy feedback noise! We just arrived in Central America for our Panama family vacation to celebrate Christmas in Panama! We are celebrating Christmas on the beach this year! We've only ever celebrated Christmas in cold weather destinations! Norway (https://diapersonaplane.com/christmas...), Iceland (https://diapersonaplane.com/christmas...), Utah, Oregon..., okay that one isn't necessarily cold, but it's definitely not Christmas on the beach! It's easy to feel festive with a red nose like Rudolph and sipping on hot chocolate with cookies in the oven heating up the house! This year we traded snow for sand for our Christmas on the beach! We traded Christmas trees for palm trees and snow boots for flip flops., and found it's just as easy to feel festive with a sunburn and a Piña colada. In this vlog we cover traveling from Salt Lake City to Panama City, losing our luggage, losing our camera, not having a rental car, our home for the month at Playa Dorada, and everything else that went wrong this first week in Panama! Do you have any questions about celebrating Christmas in Panama, or a Panama family vacation? Let us know in the comments! Traveling to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with Children is Easy with Proper Planning and the Right Information, There are Many Activities in and Around Puerto Vallarta to Keep Children Busy and Happy. I have an interview with listeners David and Lucia Garcia from Miami, Florida. They tell us about all of the fun activities available in Puerto Vallarta. Ziplining, Swimming with Dolphins, snorkeling, kayaking and more. Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be [caption id="attachment_195" align="alignright" width="300"] La Palapa, Puerto Vallarta Mexico[/caption] introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listening to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! This week we have a couple of listeners, David and Lucia Garcia, from Miami Florida who are going to tell us about traveling with children in Puerto Vallarta, but before we get to that, let’s see what’s happening this week, the 13th of December 2017. Subscribe On iTunes & Leave a Good Review Subscribe on Android With Spreaker Coffee Lovers Chance to Set a World Record in Puerto Vallarta I found this article in the PVDN, if you are in town this weekend, you may want to join in the fun…. The Coffee Fest Puerto Vallarta, to be held on December 16, will be the event in which the city will seek to impose a new brand of people gathering for one purpose, drinking coffee. The Germans currently have the Guinness Record of the most people drinking coffee at the same time, achieved on August 30, 2009 when 8,162 people gathered at the Jugendpark in Cologne to drink cold coffee. Although it is believed that a subsequent meeting in Colombia brought together more than 12,000 people, it was not verified and opened the doors for the organizers in Puerto Vallarta, who hope to summon 10 thousand coffee enthusiasts to defeat, at least in this regard, the Germans, and impose a new record. If you want to be part of this event, you must register at www.coffeefestpuertovallarta.com and go to the Malecón of Puerto Vallarta at 5:00 p.m. on December 16th. The event is completely free. https://www.vallartadaily.com/news/puerto-vallarta/puerto-vallarta-coffee-fest/ Puerto Vallarta Travel Show One Year Anniversary The one-year anniversary of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show is coming up at the end of the month, and I’ve been planning this upcoming years shows, and I must say, I’m excited about year two, but I want your suggestions also. Who would you like me to interview? Where would you like me to visit? What would you like to know about Puerto Vallarta that you already don’t know about? Email me at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com, click on the contact us tab and send me a message. You can also find me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/puertovallartatravelshow/, Twitter at https://twitter.com/PVTravelShow and our new YouTube Channel. You can send me a message via any one of those methods and I will get your suggestions so I have all those links to all those social media contacts in the show notes of this episode so reach out to me and send me an idea. Where will I be going next year? Think road trips boys and girls. Up into the Sierras to San Sebastian del Oeste for a daytrip. I will take you on a cool day trip to El Tuito, Mayto and Tehualmixtle to the South. Then we are going to go north for a couple of daytrips. One to Rincón de Guayabitos, then down to Lo de Marcos, San Francisco better known as San Pancho, Sayulita. Another to Punta de Mita, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and Bucerias. It’s going to be a great year as I said, but I need your help so let’s see how you do. [caption id="attachment_819" align="aligncenter" width="409"] Pour Favor Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Now I have a couple of events planned. First, I will have my microphones at JR’s Meet and Greet at Kelly’s Pour Favor Cookhouse and Saloon, on Tuesday January 9th at 5:30 in the afternoon. Stop by and tell us what the heck you are doing in paradise. And if you are a local Puerto Vallarta business, please stop in and give a pitch to our audience. I promise I’ll be nice. Really. Anyway, we always have a great time at JR’s Meet and greet, and by the way, they just opened a rooftop section at Pour Favors. It’s very nice. So if you are going to be in town, stop in and let’s talk. If you are too shy, that’s okay. Just stop in and say hello. [caption id="attachment_2083" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Meet and Greet Jan 9[/caption] Also, I’m planning on setting up at a table on the beach in front of Cuates y cuetes, or Langostinos, and inviting passers by to stop by, and talk about what they are doing in paradise. I’ll have a time and date for you next week, so stay tuned for that. But if you are planning on being in [caption id="attachment_50" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Cuates y Cuetes Webcam[/caption] Vallarta the first 2 weeks of January, listen up next week for the time and stop on by and sit with me on the beach in front of Cuates y Cuetes. And those of you who are at home, well maybe you can catch us on the beach with the assistance of the webcam. And if you don’t know already, [caption id="attachment_2117" align="alignright" width="300"] Table in Front of Cuates y Cuetes[/caption] if you go to my website at www.Puertovallartatravelshow.com, at the top of the page you will find the PV webcam page. Click it and check out all the cool webcams I have there from all over the Bahia de Banderas. I even have a link on the page that gives you the time that sun will be setting in Puerto Vallarta. You can actually plan ahead, every day and catch a Puerto Vallarta Sunset every day of the year. Right from the comfort of your very own bark-o-lounger. Really. Lots of people do, every day. You should try it. It’s lots of fun. Mix yourself a cocktail why don’t you and just pretend you are in paradise. At least, until you can get there in person that is. Okay, lets get to our guests, and to our interview. I first came to Vallarta in December of 1984. I had just met my wife, them my girlfriend, and we would return to Puerto Vallarta almost every year after that. Then we had our first child and we didn’t let that deter us one bit. We took Zachary with us when he was 3 months old. We stayed at a timeshare property, Villa de Palmar. It was a condo. We felt that the set-up was perfectly geared for a family traveling with child. Kitchen separate bedroom from the living area. A restaurant on the property. Pool beach, everything we needed. The property in in the Hotel zone. We rented a jeep for our stay and had the baby seat strapped in, ready for our next adventure. I recall one occasion when we were looking for a place to eat late one evening, and we stopped at Daiquiri Dicks. The ladies at the door asked us if they could look after the baby while we ate. Really? Well, we handed him over, and had the most enjoyable, carefree dinner of the trip. Not once did we even wonder what had become of Zachary. One day, the baby was crying and crying. I’m thinking for about an hour. And we were both fit to be tied. Then, out of nowhere, a little Mexican lady came up, and speaking to me in Spanish, told us what to do. We handed her the baby, and I don’t know what she did, but she had the magic. Three and a half years later, we returned to Puerto Vallarta with two boys this time. Zachary and little brother Jake. This time we stayed at the La Jolla de Mismaloya, now, the Barcello, down at Mismaloya Beach, 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta. The hotel had an all-inclusive option, but we opted to take care of the dining options ala Carte. A combination of eating in and taking a bus into town to eat out. We really had a wonderful time except for losing Jake. Go figure, the day we leave, we lose the kid. We were packed and ready to take a cab to the airport when we were distracted while loading the luggage into the cab, we turn around, and our 2-and-a-half-year child is gone. Just vanished into thin air. Well, panic set in. Especially when you consider there were all these pools, fountains and other bodies of water scattered all over the property. For about 15 minutes we scoured the property, asking along the way if anyone had seen a cute little boy with blond ringlets wander by. Finally, Debra found him, not far from where we were standing, waiting for the cab, upstairs above the lobby, being entertained by a member of the staff. Whew, that was a close one. Great way to end a perfect trip for sure right? When you take your children to Puerto Vallarta, keep in mind, if you are planning on bring a stroller, make it a very light weight foldable one. [caption id="attachment_2097" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] The Garcia Family in Puerto Vallarta[/caption] There are, especially in old town, uneven sidewalks, sidewalks with stairs built in, high curbs and cobblestone streets. You will be doing a whole lot of lifting and carrying of you stroller for sure. Also, if you usually travel with your child in a child safety seat in the car, you will need to determine what type of seat you will be bringing for your trip to strap into a taxi or an Uber ride. If you need anything baby related, food, formula, diapers, anything, you will be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta. They have Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco, Mega, Ley’s Soriana, the corner markets. One thing you will be able to find in Mexico, that’s baby supplies. All inclusive resorts, at least the ones that allow kids, usually have kid clubs and activities for the little ones. You will need to do your homework and make sure before you book a trip with junior, to see what’s available at the property you are looking at of course. I was looking at my twitter feed a couple of weeks back and say a group of tweets directed at me from a couple of listeners, David and Lucia Garcia. They were in Puerto Vallarta for the first time and they were with their kids. I contacted them and they shared some of their pictures with me and I just had to have them on the show to tell us about their experiences in Vallarta, with their two young daughters. So let’s go right now to Miami Florida where I sent my trusty microphone, and talk with listeners David and Lucia Garcia, and hear about what they did in Paradise with their kids. David is a great photographer and the colors and pictures are just fabulous so look for that Bitly link in the shownotes as well and check out their photo album. It’s pretty cool. Well, that should do it for this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. Next week stay tuned for more on the ground reports from Puerto Vallarta Mexico, with travel tips, great restaurant and excursion ideas and more. Until then, remember, this is an interactive show where I depend on your questions and suggestions about all things Puerto Vallarta. If you think of something I should be talking about, please reach out to me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending us your message. And remember, if you are considering booking any type of tour while you are in Puerto Vallarta, you must go to Vallartainfo.com, JR’s website and reserve your tour through him, right from his website. Remember the value for value proposition. His experience and on the ground knowledge of everything Puerto Vallarta in exchange for your making a purchase of a tour that you would do anyway, you’re just doing it through him as a way of saying thank you. It costs no more than if you were to use someone else so do it. Really. And when you do take one of these tours, email me about your experiences. Maybe you can come on-board and share with others what you liked or didn’t like about the tour. Again, contact me by clicking on the Contact us tab and sending off a message. And once again, if you like this podcast, please take the time and subscribe and give me a good review on iTunes if you would. That way we can get the word out to more and more people about the magic of this place. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Remember I made it easy for you to do just that with each episode I create. But if you haven't been to my website, you really need to have a look there. I have the links to the places we talk about, interesting pictures and the more all right there in my blog-posts and show-notes for each episode of the show so check them out for sure if you haven't already all-right? All right. So, thanks to listeners David and Lucia Garcia. Check out those great pictures in the show notes of this episode of the show at www.puertovallartatravelshow.com. And that link to their photo album from the trip, and Thanks to all of you for listening all the way through this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. This is Barry Kessler signing off with a wish for you all to slow down, be kind and live the Vallarta lifestyle. Nos Vemos amigos!

Dauphin Island is another one of the popular beaches in the area. Orange Beach has more high rise rental properties and a lot of restaurants. Gulf Shores is more laid back with surf shops, mini golf and other things like that. Sunset cruises are better when you are trying to see dolphins. They are more active in the evening and during the day, the sun light makes it hard to see them and get good photos. GulfQuest Maritime Museum is a bit far from the beach areas, but if you are looking for a indoor activity to do if it's raining or you just need to get out of the sun for a day, this is a great place to go. The museum itself is laid out similarly to an actual ship. Instead of being called floor one, floor two, est. they are named deck one, deck two, etc. TIP OF THE WEEK Laura’s Vacation Rentals and Young's Suncoast Rentals are the rental agencies that we have used to find great places to stay in the Alabama beach areas. Meet Glenda Watson Hyatt, author, motivational speaker and a badass agitator. For Glenda, living with cerebral palsy has not meant a boring and unfulfilled life. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. She embraces the zest of life and goes for it with a “can do” attitude. An attitude that she demonstrates in her autobiography "I’ll Do It Myself" and, in her more recent book, "Emerging from the Cocoon of Silence: My Journey from Non-Verbal to Motivational Speaker". Both books are on Amazon. As a web accessibility consultant, she worked with governments, transit authorities and non-profit organizations to improve accessibility of their websites for people with disabilities; she had built a solid reputation for herself. However, even though there is still much left to do in the field, after fourteen years, she felt so burnt out, that if she had to explain the need for text descriptions of images one more time, she would surely stab her eyes out with a sharp, long pencil! Ziplining across a city block in downtown Vancouver – and surviving – gave her permission to switch her career direction and to follow her dream to become a motivational speaker, a most unlikely career path given her significant speech impairment. Using an iPad text-to-speech app to deliver her signature talk “Finding Your True Dream, The North Star for Your Life”, she motivates audiences to identify their true dream and to take action on following their personal guiding star. Glenda is also quickly becoming a strong, clear and passionate voice for Canadians with speech and language disabilities – a community that is typically silenced, overlooked and ignored, particularly when the conversation focuses on advocacy, accessibility and legislation. Listen in as Glenda shares with us her favorite, two-word response whenever barriers are at hand…

You can enjoy dinner under the stars, with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. ! It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we have a special show but first, what’s happening in Puerto Vallarta this week, the 11th of July, 2017. [caption id="attachment_809" align="alignright" width="233"] UBER in Puerto Vallarta[/caption] For the last couple of weeks I have been reporting back to you in the saga of the arrival of Uber into the Bahia de Banderas. Uber is in Puerto Vallarta and in Nuevo Vallarta, and the taxi unions are mad as all get out. I have been watching and reading reports of taxi drivers acting badly. They are not taking this invasion of Uber sitting down. They are in some cases, getting a little violent. So this week, I want to give you travelers some tips and you will do well by listening to them and well, taking my advice. First of all, Uber drivers are not allowed to pick up at the airport or the Marina, so right off the bat, any of you who are thinking hey, I’ll just summon up an Uber ride at the airport, forget it. They are not allowed. Be careful if you are being picked up by a by a friend or relative at the airport, for safety sake and to avoid being mistaken for an Uber user and your friend, an Uber driver, make sure you greet your friend with a hug or a kiss, and sit in the front passenger seat of the car. If you are actually taking an Uber ride outside of the airport area, hop in the front seat and say something like. “Thanks amigo”, and shake hands. That way you look like friends and not driver and fare. When waiting for your Uber driver, try to avoid staring at your mobile device. Taxi drivers can detect an Uber user from a mile away. Be careful. Don’t be staring at your phone. Don’t wait for your Uber ride near a taxi stand or places where taxis wait to pick up rides like in front of your hotel or a restaurant or where taxis congregate and wait for fares like near the Malecon. And.. Finally, if you have to be somewhere on time, like at the airport to catch your flight, take a cab for goodness sake. You don’t want to take the chance that you will be blocked in by a bunch of angry taxistas, waiting you out in your Uber ride, until you have to abandon that ride and hop in their cab. I saw a news report the other day and a tourist and his Uber driver were blocked by a bunch of taxi drivers and the taxi drivers coaxed the tourist out of the car, offering him a free ride to the airport. Wow! Even that Uber user couldn’t turn that deal down. Sheesh! Uber Puerto Vallarta Click Here Hey, just remember, cabs are cheap by US and Canadian standards here in Puerto Vallarta and a cab ride back to the airport from your condo or hotel, is actually less expensive than the federal taxis out of the airport, so take a cab back to the airport. Look, I get it. I understand the tendency to use up all of your pesos in your pocket before you depart Mexico, and I’m pretty sure that many Uber users out there are thinking, I really don’t want to go to the ATM to exchange money for a taxi ride to the airport, I’ll just use Uber. No cash needed. But really, Listen to me, be on the safe side and use a yellow taxi back to the cruise ship or to the airport. It’s cheap. Don’t cheap out and end your stay in paradise on a sour note guys, just saying! Now I know some of you more seasoned Puerto Vallarta travelers are too cheap to pay for an airport taxi, and choose to lug all of your luggage and bags out of [caption id="attachment_202" align="aligncenter" width="751"] Taxi Pay Window in the Puerto Vallarta Airport[/caption] the airport lobby doors and cross over the bridge to the other side of the carratera and hail a cab from the spot under the bridge next to Tacon de Marlin, but how smart is that? I mean there you are, actually penny pinching on vacation, in the tropical heat after a long flight. I mean really? Really? Oh well. To each his own. Now the Tacon de Marlin thing, that’s for another show, but I just say get used to the fact that you will be taking that Federal Airport Taxi to your hotel, condo or resort when you get into Puerto Vallarta. I have all the information in episode 3 of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show where I talk about what to expect when you land at the Puerto Vallarta Airport. I also have a picture of the most current airport taxi rates in the show notes for this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. Frida Kahlo’s 110th Birthday [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HLEVthozXM[/embed] If you have ever been to Puerto Vallarta, or if you do plan on going, you most probably see a painting of a lady’s face. You will find her on beach towels, posters, [caption id="attachment_1007" align="alignright" width="288"] Frida Kahlo[/caption] prints, She is usually painted with her black hair up in a bun piled on her head adorned with flowers or comb’s. She has this uni-brow, these dark arched eyebrows connected in the center. Those of you who have been to Vallarta, have you seen her? Well she is Frida. And Frida Kahlo was one of Mexico’s most beloved artists, and she was quite a woman with a very interesting life. She was born in Coyocan, in Mexico City in 1907, Although she died at the young age of 47, she lives on today in Puerto Vallarta. Frida contracted Polio when she was 6, and the disease did a number on her right leg and foot which caused her to limp. At the age of 18, she was riding a bus with a friend when it collided with a trolley car and she was impaled by a steel handrail which went into her hip. And out the other side fracturing her pelvis and her spine. It was during the recuperation from the accident when Frida took up painting. At the age of 21 she sought out the famous Mexican muralist and fellow communist Diego Rivera whom she ended up marrying he was easily 20 years her senior. She was a surrealist painter, and she liked to paint portraits of herself. Over 55 of them. That’s why you see so many portraits of her face. She and Rivera were a force to be reckoned with but Diego couldn’t be true. They divorced and remarried. She even had an affair with the famous Leon Trotsky who actually lived in exile under her roof for two years with Diego and his own wife Trotsky’s own wife Natalia, in Coyocan, Mexico City. Yes Frida and Diego were big in the Communist party. [caption id="attachment_1008" align="alignleft" width="225"] Frida Kahlo with Monkeys[/caption] There was a falling out between Diego and Trotsky, and his wife moved out of the Kahlo Rivera compound, and a year and a half later, one of Joseph Stalin’s henchmen put an ice axe through Trotsky’s skull. Teach the pointy bearded dude to mess with Frida. Boom. Okay, I could go on and on about Frida Kahlo, but there’s not enough time for that today. I do have a couple of links and a great YouTube video about her that you can check out on my website at www.Puertovallartatravelshow.com. I saw pictures of it and just wanted to find out more [caption id="attachment_992" align="alignright" width="230"] Edgar Lopez, Canopy River[/caption] about it so JR checked it out for me and said Barry, you need to talk to these people at Canopy River. They have this bridge, ziplines, hikes and an incredible Saturday and Sunday brunch that will blow your mind. This place is in the rain-forest and on Ejido land. Now we will talk a little about the Ejido in the conversation, but we are going to talk Ejidios in a podcast coming up soon, but let me read a bit about the history of the Ejido and from the mission statement here at Canopy River.. HISTORY: El Jorullo was founded in 1940 with 180 inhabitants and 157 ejidatarios and it belongs to the Association of Foresters North Coast Jalisco. It is mainly dedicated to the cultivation of various seeds, who are planted through a method that inhabitants adapted to the mountainous area -these seeds are distributed in Puerto Vallarta and its surroundings. Crafting is another main activity of this community, they use wood and skins to produce from centerpieces to figures carved in different materials and clothing accessories. The third main activity is tourism, as the area offers an impressive variety of natural settings; the contrast between the mountains and the beach is of great impact for local and international tourists, making this ejido a unique jewel in Mexico. MISSION: We are a united cooperative, solid and sustainable, with a team of collaborators qualified and committed, we conserve and protect our ecosystem, dedicated to create new experiences for our visitors accomplishing for them to live the best moment of their lives, waking up the greatest emotions in spiritual communion with nature, in a paradise, natural environment, that motivates the great and secure adventure exceeding their expectations. So let’s go to and have a talk with one really great guy. Edgar Lopez is a Puerto Vallarta Native at Canopy River. Hola, I'm Melina, the journalism intern at the inn this summer. For my podcast cameo about Yunke Zipline Adventure in Luquillo, Bill took Renée's grandchildren and myself to zip through the forest canopy and to conduct interviews with the staff. Not only did we agree it was the best ziplining we have done here on the island, but we also learned the importance of ecotourism in the conservation of Puerto Rico's ecology. I present to you an audio tour of our zipline experience and go in depth with our tour guide Eric and the owner Roberto about their work in ecotourism.
We review our Anthrocon experience (it was awesome this year!) and cover a bunch of news.
