Teresa Bowser is an incredible trail runner, ultra runner, crew, pacer and friend to all. Teresa began her trail running journey around 2019 and has now conquered some of the most difficult ultras around...the Hellbender 100, Cloudsplitter 100, Stillwater Ultras, and recently the Georgia Death Race to name a few. Teresa is also a beautiful, young lady with the biggest and brightest smile. You can't help but feel joy when you are in her presence, and she doesn't even seem to realize it. But hiding behind that smile is so much pain, an imposter she would say....a young woman carrying a burden that no one can see. Little did I know, I asked Teresa to come on the podcast at the perfect time. Teresa had just recently finished the Georgia Death Race, a 74-mile killer of a race with 16000 feet of climbing and 16000 of descent. Throughout the duration of the race, you are required to carry a 1lb railroad spike, and upon completion you throw this nail into a coffin. Pretty epic. Teresa told me that her why started to change as her race began to unravel, and the spike she had to carry took on a meaning that she did not even expect. So, on this podcast, Teresa shares the burden that she began to release that day, that she threw in the coffin, and I am touched that she chose to share with me and all those that listen to this podcast. I am overwhelmed, truly, that Teresa and so many others would open up to me and share some of their deepest hurts but also their greatest joys. We all have a story...runner or not. We are all on this journey together...FACING VERT of all kinds...side by side. We are all God's creation...masterpieces in His eyes. Know you are worthy, loved, and created for a purpose. Teresa, I love you, and I loved seeing the sense of freedom that came over you as you shared your story. Keep fighting. Want to reach out to Teresa? The Georgia Death Race is one of those legendary races on the East Coast, it's a point-to-point 70ish mile race through the North Georgia mountains. On the chat, we've got Matthew Johnson from Georgia, Josh Lockwood, and Mr. Pizza Gut himself... Neil Murphy. Matthew Johnson is a guy who I've ran against before and these North Georgia mountains are his home terf. He's done races like the FATS 50k, the Sky to Summit, Sweet H2O, and the Quest for the Crest. Josh Lockwood was done races like the Long Haul 100, the Pinellas Trail Challenge, Whispering Pines, and Death at Depuis! Neil Murphy has now been out to the Georgia Death Race 8 times between volunteering and racing! His 2017 go at the race left him famous for the Pizza Gut meme. Whether know him has the Pizza Gut Guy, or not... He's done races like the Vermont Spartan Ultra Beast, Forgotten Florida 100, Spartan Death Race, and the No Business 100! The Georgia Death Race is a 74ish mile point-to-point race from Byron Herbert Reece Farm in Blairsville, Ga to Amicalola Falls State Park. The race has 16,000 ft of climbing and 16,000 ft of descent. It is relentless.

Wow. Thats the easiest way to describe our feelings about the 11th annual, 2023 Georgia Death Race. We had high winds, sideways rain, and a kick-butt National Anthem to start the morning. Beautiful clear skies by sunrise on Akin Mountain. Then the heat and humidity came, making an already challenging race course that much extreme. Today we have two GDR finishers on to tell their story. Finishers is an understatement for these two. Our first guest, Lindsey Clemens is not your ordinary military wife. As a mother of 2 kids she still finds time to get into the mountains and get GDR specific training in.  Currently stationed in Augusta, Georgia, Lindsey loves to be challenged and push her personal boundaries, on the trail and in every day life. @runwithgritandgraceOur next guest, Jana Fridrichova , is our 2023 GDR Female winner, and came within 20minutes of being 1st overall.  Hailing from Hagerstown, Maryland, she's a mother of 2 teenage kids, and a seasoned ultra runner, with 60ish ultras under her belt. Jana is hungry for the mountain trails, and for her favorite post race meal : a huge plate of loaded pork nachos and non alcoholic Guinness. Sit back, grab some of your favorite aid station grub, and listen along as we hear the stories of the Georgia Death Race 2023. _[NOTE: Due to poor producer skills, this episode was nearly lost to time. But thanks to some more experience, better audio editing tools (Thanks Patrons!) and quite a bit of luck... I think something was able to salvaged here. Happy to be able to share the stories from this night with you. Sorry for any residual poor audio quality. It remains the fault of the producer and not the panelists!) _ Way back in 2018... Mort Nace and Medved once again gathered a distinguished panel of runners, assembled an interested community and provided a comfortable space for many stories to be told.  Jason Vidmar, Michael Burke, Nate Huckle, Katie Ghidiu and Joy Valvano shared their running stories with us. From broken bladders, spontaneous 50ks, near death coaching experiences to professional outdoor parenting tips. Jason Vidmar's storied running career spans the peeks of Powder Mills Park, to the depths of the Barkley Fall Classic, around the hills of the Georgia Death Race and has left footsteps all over the Adirondacks. Trail Dad is always up for an adventure and often comes away with some entertaining anecdotes. Katie Ghidiu is fast. She has run a sub 5 minute mile (4:55), a sub 3 hr marathon (2:58) and a sub 24 hour 100m (2:39). She Ran cross country and track at Fairport HS and University of Notre Dame. With regards to trail racing she has a 3rd and a 1st at Ontario Summit Trail Marathon; A 1st place at Sehgahunda Trail Marathon, a 1st at Wakely Dam 55k, 3rd and 5th places finishes at Twisted Branch 100k, and sub 24 hour at her first 100 miler in Burning River 100M, 23:39. She is also an Adirondack 46er and likely has a lot of dirt on Nate Huckle. Nate Huckle is a running coach, a mentor, an ultrarunner, an ADK46er and a raconteur.  Go on a run with him and he'll likely start telling you a story that before you know it, has held your attention for more hours and miles than you intended (or were willing) to run! Michael Burke has run more than 70 races in and around the Rochester area. While doing so he has found time to raise his family outdoors (not actually, but you know) and help found a charity that assists local families affected by cancer. Find Mike on the trails and he is more than likely to chew your ear off (again, not actually, but with like stories and jokes and stuff) Joy Valvano started running ultras back when it was considered crazy. More crazy than today. Her running consisted of often taking up road trip adventures with her running friends to races like Bull Run Run (10 times!!) and even 100 milers like Haliburton and Vermont. But her running isn't all in her past, Joy has recently run Twisted Branch 100k. Originally a runner for some alone time and a bit of fitness, Joy has found herself spending more and more (and more) time in the woods. Special Guests: Jason Vidmar, Joy Valvano, Katie Ghidiu, Michael Burke, Mort Nace, and Nate Huckle.

Today we have a special episode for you all that love to suffer. You won't suffer through this episode, but you will hear 4 different stories and experiences from runners that have and will have experienced the 'Georgia Death Race.'For those of you that DON'T know what the GDR is, the Georgia Death Race is a 74 ISH mile trail running race from Vogel State Park to Amicalola Falls State Park in North Georgia. Runners are required to carry a 1 lb railroad spike the duration of the race. If you finish then you throw this nail in the coffin and get an engraved spike. The race has 16,000 ft of climbing and 16,000 ft of descent. It is relentless. IT has been called the craziest and most fun race East of the Rockies. . This is the most watched, sought after and desired ultra marathon on the East Coast. You will hear 4 sides of the story:First we have Andrew Miller. Now residing in the PNW, Andrew is a beast on the North Georgia trails. He was won the GDR 3 times and still holds the course record. A winner of the prestigious 'Western States' (with a golden ticket from his GDR win!). He is a wealth of knowledge on how to be fast and efficient on the trails. Check out his coaching serviceshttps://www.andrewmillercoaching.com@andrewmillercoachingNext, we have Paul Reynolds. Paul has finished GDR 4 times, and is going for the coveted 5th finish. Living in New York, Paul feels drawn to the rugged mountains of the southeast. He's got some great advice on how to stay strong, through all the ups and downs, metaphorically and literally. After that, Kevin Silvey Kevin is no stranger to the trail running community in the southeast. If you've ran a race here, you've probably toed the line with him. With that being said, Kevin has attempted the GDR  twice, both times unsuccessful. Kevin talks about what went wrong, and what he's doing in training to fix it. Finally we have Doug LynchDoug is what RunBum has dubbed, "The Phoenix." He is a veteran ultra runner with an epic story. We will leave it to that. Hear about is story leading up to his first attempt, at the Georgia Death Race.  As always, thank you for your support, here and out on the trails. If you'd like to follow along with live tracking on the race, check outwww.runbumtours.com

The Tahoe 200 is the first and only 200-mile single loop mountain trail race in the United States on a typical year, however, this year it was an out-and-back due to wildfires and forestry recovery. This course this year was still upwards of over 31,000 feet of elevation! Avery Collins and Sabrina Stanley are the power couple of ultra running for a reason - and not just because the name is catchy and helpful when promoting their coaching business - Power Couple Coaching. Their accomplishments in ultra running are legit. Since his rookie season in 2012, Avery has dedicated his life to being the top runner in his sport. In 2017, he won every race he entered, including the Georgia Death Race, Quest for the Crest 50k, Hahn's Peak Hill Climb, Continental Divide Trail Run 50k, and Grindstone 100 Miler and finished 6th at Western States. In 2019, Avery set a course record at Quest for the Crest 50k, he won the Fatdog 120-miler, and finished 3rd at Trail de Bourbon as the highest placing American male ever). Ultrarunner Magazine named Sabrina the 8th best American Female in 2018 and ranked her 5th in 2019. She's finished first female at the last 11-ultras she's entered. In 2018, Sabrina won Hardrock 100. The following year, she won HURT 100 and recently became the first American (male or female) to win Diagonal Des Fous. It will become obvious early in this interview that Sabrina won't be happy until she's ranked number 1, and we don't doubt her for a second. In this episode, we talk to Sabrina and Avery about their goals to be the top ultra runners in the world. The couple recalls the horrific car crash that left Avery unable to race for six months, his painful rehab and struggle with the possibility that he might never run again. Sabrina shares her mental approach to the sport and striving to be the best and the ultra running community frowning upon runners who outwardly express a desire to win every time they step foot on a trail. And finally, we talk about weed. I mean, there's a reason Avery's Instagram handle is @runninghigh. Avery shares his thoughts on cannabis and its use for running, training, and recovery. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support

Episode 86 is an interview with the amazing athlete Maggie Guterl. Maggie made headlines when she won Big’s Backyard Ultra in 2019, a ‘last man standing’-style event run by Lazarus Lake (organiser of the infamous Barkley Marathons) which sees runners cover a 6.7km loop on repeat. Each lap must be completed within an hour and starts again on the hour and after that, it’s a battle to see which competitor outlasts the rest. Maggie completed 60 laps to cover a mind-boggling 402.5kms and win it outright – the first woman to do so. Maggie has also competed for Team USA at the IAU 24-Hour World Championships, she’s won the Brazos Bend 100-miler outright, come second at the Georgia Death Race and 8th at Western States, amongst other things. IN this interview we discuss her win at Bigs and what it will take to succeed at Barkley in 2021. I used to think that to get running injuries sorted, one needed to see a physio. How wrong was I! I have been seeing Luke Nelson, chiropractor at Health and High Performance in Mont Albert. Luek is a sports chiropractor who specialises in runners. He has been amazing at helping get on top of the niggles I have had since GSER back in 2019. Let Luke help you get on top of any niggles or injuries you may have now, so that you can enjoy running again and get back to preparing for the upcoming race season or just so that you run pain free! Come in and see Luke or any of the other  specialists at Health and High Performance where they utilise the latest in technology, and experience, to help you get back to your running best. So, head to www.healthhp.com.au/run to book an appointment. I assure you, you won’t regret it! You can also find them on instagram: HealthHighPerformance where they regularly post informative videos on how to prevent injuries and develop flexibility and strength. Scott Magee cancelled the biggest family reunion on the east coast. The call to drop Twisted Branch 100k nearly broke him who was ready to hold the 6th running of the event. He wonders if he could have been more creative. Could they have made the race happen? Possibly, but it wouldn't have been Twisted Branch. Once you run the event, you'll understand. It's the volunteers, the environment, the community, the course that makes this 100k special. Changing anything would undermine the spirit of the foundations of the race. Scott the runner is someone who loves a good trail race. He has run Muddy Sneaker 10 times, that often being his only race of the year. It was his first race and he showed up in swimming trunks. Needless to say, the gear has changed but the race lives on for him. Muddy Sneaker actually runs through a section of the Twisted Branch course, which sparked Scotts interest and love for the trails in Naples, NY. In this episode, Scott explains how he mapped out the TB100K course and how long it took. He did the race by himself the first two years, forgetting a headlamp the first year. He was motivated by the incredible views but also the responsibility to improve the trail. He speaks to the beauty of being able to hike and just keep going. Making the race happen was a combination of navigation and building trail from washed out wilderness. Thankfully the race is very well marked, and headlamps are encouraged. The first year, Scott felt TB was a failure. Two runners were lost and he didn't know what to do. He took off down the trail to look for the runners, only he knew where those runners were. Luckily, they were found but Scott still felt like the event went terribly. The next morning, Scott woke up to all runners thanking him for the best race they'd ever run. Four other people approached him to join the race directing team. He was completely baffled, but newly inspired to make the next year a success. Well Scott, we're glad you did! Preferring long adventures outside to races, that will never keep him away from Muddy Sneaker and he also talks about running the Georgia Death Race and his experiences with the RD who must not be named. Scott enjoys spending time outdoors, camping and hiking with his family. Reach him, and sign up for Twisted at http://www.twistedbranchtrail.com/ Instagram: @sctamagee

In 2007, he won the USA Track and Field Trail Marathon championship and his ultrasignup reads of podium after podium of the best races on the east coast. Along with being a high level runner, Aaron also owns and operates the Foot RX Running store in Asheville where he has established an excellent trail running community in one of the most beautiful outdoorsy towns in the United States. In other words, he is freaking fast and, when it comes to running, is extremely knowledgeable! Throughout this episode Aaron shares stories from his career: How in the world does one run the Quest for the Crest 50k course and then win the whole thing???? (There is 12,000 ft of GAIN in only 31 miles- the thing is a beast!) What drives him to compete at such a high level? What was it like to from injured to taking on UTMB? How being a father and a husband has enhanced his love of the sport? Why is the Georgia Death Race so unbelievably brutal? What it takes to plan and organize the Hellbender 100? Aaron competes in the Southeast which is where I fell in love with Trail Running so I really enjoyed geeking out about all things East Coast and Appalachia in this episode! Hope you guys enjoy the show!! We will definitely have Aaron back for more stories and running advice in the future! After running her first marathon in 2009, she caught the endurance bug and ran her first ultra (a 24-hour race!) in 2011. She's competed in numerous 24 hour races, Big's Backyard Ultra (which she will be racing again on October 19th), and Barkley Marathons in 2018 (an insane race if you haven't heard of it), among countless other ultras. In 2016, she placed 2nd in the Georgia Death Race and got her golden ticket to Western States 100 (essentially the Boston of ultras), where she placed 8th female. This was one of my first podcast interviews, and I had so much fun talking to Maggie (as you can tell from all my laughter!) and hearing about how she got into the sport, shifted from bartending and partying life to being an ultra runner, and how she has been able to dial in her everyday and sports nutrition. The "Matt B. Davis Runs" Podcast was born on BlogTalkRadio on Monday July 2, 2012. I did not have any podcast recording or editing tools and had zero clue what I was doing. Someone must have told me about BlogTalk and I figured out this super basic platform. I knew that I could play an intro song, have people call in to the show in the middle, and play a song at the end for an outro. That's as much as I could do, so I gave it a shot. In the first few weeks of the show, I realized that there was also a chat aspect to that platform that I could enable. I started doing the show at night and it instantly became super OCR community friendly. Nowadays, anyone can go live video on a zillion platforms, but back then, this was brand new. So when the show went live, the handful of us from various ocr groups in the country would talk to each other/ask questions etc. Monday (and sometimes Thursday) nights became a nice little meetup spot, and it helped me connect with the audience, and kept me super engaged in the process. The show got me well known to obstacle racers, the people behind the races, and anyone in the OCR community (even if many of them had to have what a podcast was explained to them). After a month or so, people starting reaching out to me to be on the show. The were athletes wanting to tell their story or RD's wanting to get the word out for their race. Soon after a website and social media followed and I began to produce more and more content. It has been well documented, as I have told this over the years, that I just sort of quickly became "the guy" in OCR. The short story and the long story of the rest, is history. That's all I really want to say here, as you can hear an opening 15 minutes of me digging deeper into my feelings about the whole thing on this episode. I do want to thank all of you that have listened over the past 6 years as you have helped me more than you'll ever know, as a host and as a person. On today's program.... 2 people, like me, who refuse to lose. Anthony Matesi and Morgan McKay, both of my guests from Episode 1. Anthony has gone from obstacle and endurance racer to, amongst other things, a bunch of different jobs at Spartan Race. He's also launched his own companies, as he continues to find his purpose. He also recently completed one of the most difficult ultra marathons on the east coast in the Georgia Death Race. He was in town after his GDR experience so he talked to me about it, plus we cover some of what life has brought his way since I first met him. Morgan broke a Guinness World Record for running a 10K race with 100 pounds on her back. The day after she broke the record, she hopped on the phone with me to talk about the experience. Plus we go down memory lane to talk about all that's happened in the last 6 years. Show Notes: Episode Number 1 Legend Of The Death Race Meet Morgan McKay

“You are so much more than just your race results. When I think about people that I know in the obstacle racing world, in the ultra world, I don't remember where they finished in races. It doesn't really matter to me. It's being involved and engaged in the community [that matters most].” From late 2011 through the early part of 2016, there was virtually no stopping Amelia Boone. She tore up the obstacle-racing scene, winning the Spartan Race World Championship in 2013 and the World's Toughest Mudder, a.k.a. “the most extreme, insane, imposing, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping 24-hour obstacle course challenge on the planet,” three times—one of those triumphs just eight weeks after knee surgery. In 2015, she started experimenting on obstacle-free trails, finishing third in her first ultramarathon at the Georgia Death Race. The following year, she finished second at the Sean O'Brien 100K, qualifying for the Western States 100. If an event involved some combination of dirt and prolonged suffering, Boone seemed to excel at it. But her streak of podium finishes soon snapped. Literally. Not long after punching her Golden Ticket to Western States, Boone suffered a stress fracture of her femur, forcing her to forfeit her place on the start line in Squaw. But that was far from the end of it. A few months later, Boone was injured again, this time with a stress fracture in her sacrum. After starting the year on such a high note, Boone felt like she was in a hole with no clear way out. “The process of acceptance was really hard and that feeling of kind of losing your identity,” the 34-year-old Boone recently told me. “And I think anyone who's been sidelined with anything for a really long time, you start to really feel that. And I remember just being really angry at first. When I saw people running down the road, I wanted to throw things at them because I was so jealous.” In this episode of the morning shakeout podcast, Boone and I cover a wide range of topics, ranging from how she got her start in obstacle racing and ultrarunning, to how she's dealt with injuries and setback, both physically and psychologically, and how she juggles her day job working full-time as an attorney for Apple with training and racing at a high level. We also talk about her affinity for Pop Tarts and professional wrestling (“If I could go back and do it all over again, I would have been a professional wrestler,” she says half-jokingly), the value of strength training and rest days for ultrarunners, and the challenges of being a sponsored endurance athlete.
Oh yeah, and we discuss her return to ultramarathon racing at this weekend's Sean O'Brien 100K, where she'll be a part of a deep women's field—and much, much more. “What I've kind of realized beyond all this is yes, I signed up for Sean O'Brien to hopefully get a Golden Ticket to go back to Western States but as I get closer, the more and more I realize that if that happens, great; but you know what, the day to day, and the training, and everything that I've put into it, I'm just happy to be out there and racing,” says Boone. “So for me, this entire training block, and coming back to Sean O'Brien, is having trust and faith again in my body and just the ability to be out there and do that, because at points I was just throwing my hands up in the air and being like, ‘Maybe I'm just not meant for this, you know?'” This episode of the morning shakeout podcast was edited by John Isaac at BaresRecords.com.
