The company has genetic data of 15 million people, which could be shared with a future buyer. Here's how to delete it. Plus, an experimental coating could make golf balls roll more reliably on greens with different conditions. After 23andMe Bankruptcy, Customers Urged To Delete Their DataIf you're one of roughly 15 million people who used 23andMe to unlock information from their DNA, consumer advocates have a message for you: Delete your data. On Sunday, the company, which has customers send saliva samples for DNA analysis, filed for bankruptcy. While many customers submitted their saliva for the purpose of ancestral analysis, 85% of customers also consent to their data used for genetic disease research. As the company searches for a buyer, consumer advocates, including California Attorney General Rob Bonta, have urged customers to delete their data from 23andMe's website. 23andMe and other genetic testing companies are not subject to HIPAA, meaning health and medical records kept by 23andMe could be shared with a future buyer.Producer Kathleen Davis joins Host Flora Lichtman to discuss this and other top science stories of the week.Chemists Make A Coating That Can Slow A Golf Ball's RollWith spring here, the days are getting warmer and longer, meaning conditions are perfect for a trip to the golf course. And while golf is certainly a game of physics—force, angles, parabolas—this week researchers presented work showing that chemistry could play an important role on the golf course as well. Speaking at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Diego, researchers described a high performance coating that could be incorporated into the polyurethane shell of a golf ball. The hydrophilic (water-loving) coating would make tiny bits of water stick to the surface of the golf ball and sheet off, modifying the way the ball interacts with the grass of the green. That interaction, says Tom Kennedy, owner of Chemical Innovative Solutions Inc., would lead to the ball rolling more slowly and reliably, especially on “fast,” closely-cut greens in dry and windy conditions.Kennedy joins Host Ira Flatow to discuss the technology, and how hydrophilic coatings could find a home in other applications, including solar cells.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Interview by Kris PetersSydney hard rock/metal outfit Bare Bones are the gift that keep on giving musically.Over more than a decade in the Australian music scene, the band have never shied away from their beliefs, maintaining a DIY approach to life and music that has seen them win the respect of their peers as well as the adulation of a quickly growing fan base that pretty much doubles every time Bare Bones play at a music festival or to people that might not have heard of them before.Ferociously uncompromising on stage, Bare Bones have carried that intent into the studio with their latest EP, Ceremonial Rage (out now). Proudly - and rightfully - anointed as the band's heaviest, most aggressive slab of music to date, the five-track Ceremonial Rage sees Bare Bones more embracing their earlier and heavier musical influences, experimenting with the past just enough to put a fresh, exciting spin on their future.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Tom Kennedy this morning to chat about the EP and Bare Bones' special EP launch at Chuck Trailers in Sydney tonight. Naturally, we lead with the assessment that this is the heaviest material yet released by the band."100%, yeah," Kennedy replied without hesitation. "I think it's kind of a natural progression from where we've been going. Our music seems to get heavier each time. We put out our first full-length album, Bad Habits, and then when we went and did our second full-length, Rival Minds, people were like, this is definitely heavier and darker. And then it's just kind of been going more and more that way ever since. So kind of a natural progression. This is where we've ended up."Which leads to us asking Kennedy if the heavier direction was something they spoke about as a band during the creative process."You know what man, we've been around for like 12-13 years at this point and this EP is the first time we've ever had that conversation," he replied. "It's always kind of been like this unconscious vibe thing going into writing. It's just like, well, let's just do what we always do and get together and come up with some riffs and stuff. But this time before we started, we had that chat like, what direction do we want to take this? And for us, it's getting back to the stuff that we grew up on. Being in a band with unique, distinct personalities, you all have pretty different tastes when it comes to music and art and all that kind of stuff. But I guess the one thing that we've always loved and agreed on is bands like Slipknot, Korn and Limp Bizkit. And so we just kind of thought, let's lean into that. Let's try and give a modern take on that kind of thing and put our spin on it."In the full interview, we explored the creative journey behind each track, with Tom explaining that Cobra Clutch evolved from an industrial metal demo to a dynamic song featuring rapping, with Vertebreaker showcasing a catchy chorus and heavy breakdown. The rapid writing process for Tiger Driver was influenced by hip-hop, while Burning Hammer addresses serious global issues. Tom expressed satisfaction with the EP's direction and the reinvigoration of their passion for music, hinting at future explorations. He also provided an overview of the Chuck Trailers venue in Sydney, emphasizing the importance of free entry for fans to their EP launch on March 20 and the addition of several bands to the opening gig line up, reflecting on the community aspect of live music and the band's commitment to staying active in the scene.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We're BACK with another episode of I Had Trials Once!Jordan & Gaz are joined by two familiar faces in Nicky Adams & Tom Kennedy for an I Had Trials Once Christmas special! The boys open Christmas crackers and get into the festive spirit as we look back on key sporting headlines from the previous year in the latest version of our Christmas quiz.If you play along at home let us know how many questions you got right.
Summary: Get ready to run into that one kid from high school in today's episode - Small Towns! Whether you're like Devin who grew up and still lives in small towns or like Holly who is a big city gal, these spaces are almost always pressure cookers. The intimacy of the community can make any character claustrophobic (especially if a serial killer is lurking) or euphoric with love; the past and the present intermingle in these places and nothing is anonymous, for better or worse. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:29): Holly discussed The Whisper Man by Alex North, a psychological thriller following Tom Kennedy and his young son, Jake, after they move to the small town of Featherbank after the tragic death of Tom's wife, Rebecca. Jake, a quiet and sensitive boy, soon begins to exhibit strange behavior - including talking to imaginary friends. When Neil Spencer, a young boy in town, goes missing in a similar way to the M.O. of serial Killer Frank Cater, detectives get involved to stop the madness. Holly's key takeaways were: Characters like detective Pete and Tom are haunted by their pasts, while Jake's odd behavior reflects how trauma can manifest in children. The novel delves into the lasting effects of pain and loss. The strained relationship between Tom and Jake mirrors the generational impact of Tom's own childhood with his abusive father, exploring how parental relationships shape identity and behavior. Featherbank is portrayed as a small, seemingly idyllic town, but one that is haunted by its history with "The Whisper Man" murders. This duality of small towns—where the veneer of safety masks a deeper darkness—creates a rich tension. The town's past crimes are embedded in its collective memory, affecting the attitudes of its residents and shaping the investigation into the new abduction. Both Tom and Jake feel isolated in their own ways, but the story emphasizes the importance of connection and understanding in overcoming fear and loneliness. The father and son also grapple with their grief over Rebecca's death; their loneliness highlights the ways people cope with loss and how relationships can be rebuilt after tragedy. The Heart (15:24): Devin discussed Book Lovers by Emily Henry, a romance following NYC literary agent Nora Stephens as she and her sister Libby take a sabbatical to the tiny town of Sunshine Falls, North Carolina. Once there, Nora runs into her arch-nemesis and brooding book editor Charlie Lastra, who grew up in the town. Thrown together for a few weeks, the two decide to put aside their differences and work to make a well-known author's manuscript into a publishable book. But can their enmity last when they both clearly love books and this idyllic town so much? Devin's key takeaways were: The setting of Sunshine Falls is as Hallmark-y as the name would convey. The are friendly locals, quirky businesses, and a slower pace of life that contrasts directly with the New York lifestyles that Nora and Charlie are accustomed to now. The town also holds personal significance for Charlie; he grew up there. Nora is a literary agent and Charlie an editor, which not only gives them a ton in common but is grounds for their enmity. In Sunshine Falls, the Goode Books Store is a focal point, representing the literary charm of the town and serves as the backdrop for many scenes. While it was a manuscript that made them dislike each other, it's another one that brings them together. Nora first met Charlie when pitching the blunt editor a manuscript she felt passionate about; he rebuffs her and criticizes the work. They both have their heels dug in that the other is wrong and has no taste, but as they collaborate on Dusty Fielding's latest work, they begin to bond. Hot On the Shelf (27:36): Devin: Puck & Prejudice by Lia Riley Holly: Perestroika in Paris by Jane Smiley What's Making Our Hearts Race (31:15): Devin: the final season of What We Do in the Shadows Holly: the Wicked movie Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Tom's musical roots with on the acoustic bass, an instrument he started playing at age 9 and took to so naturally that within a few years he was performing with internationally known players such as Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Nat Adderly, Sonny Stitt and Stan Kenton. At age 17, Tom would create a musical alter ego when he began playing the electric bass. Intrigued by the endless possibilities of the instrument, he began developing his now signature style best described as deep, soulful grooves merging seamlessly into acrobatic, horn-like soloing.Gaining a reputation that soon traveled beyond his native St. Louis, Tom relocated to New York City, where he quickly gained work with multiple groups. Further accolades came through a recording with guitar great Bill Connors and tours with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker in the world-renowned jazz-fusion group Steps Ahead. Additional tours and recordings with Brazilian pianist Tania Maria and guitarist Al DiMeola followed. On episode 124 of The Bass Shed Podcast, Tom discusses his latest recording "NEW START", the production of the album, his writing process, the gear he uses live and in the studio and more. Today Bethann and Samantha will be reviewing a fan recommendation of the horror kind, "After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank. But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed "The Whisper Man," for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night. Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter's crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man. And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window..."

Tom fears being asked to be the captain of a nuclear submarine, which may be unlikely, but You Can't Rule It Out, which could be an early 70's game show with Tom Kennedy as host. Scott ponders whether he would perform a one nighter on a submarine if the money was right. And then both of them realize it would be inevitable that after Scott's successful show, Tom, not Scott, would be asked to captain the submarine, since doing comedy on a ship isn't a career path to being at the helm of one. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tom-saunders9/support
Date with the Angels is an American sitcom that aired on ABC from May 10, 1957, to January 29, 1958. The series, which stars Betty White and Bill Williams, began as a late season replacement for The Ray Anthony Show for the same sponsor, Chrysler's Plymouth division. Tom Kennedy was the show's announcer and spokesman for Plymouth. Synopsis. The series revolves around newly married Vicki Angel and her insurance salesman husband Gus Angel who get themselves and their friends and neighbors into various comedic situations. Besides Betty White and Bill Williams, the series also featured for several episodes Richard Deacon, Richard Reeves, Maudie Prickett and Burt Mustin. Among the series' guest stars were Nancy Kulp, Madge Blake, Joan Vohs, Chuck Connors, Reta Shaw, Dave Willock, Sid Melton, Russell Hicks, Hugh O'Brian, Hanley Stafford, and Willard Waterman. The show's theme song was "Got A Date With An Angel", a semi-standard introduction in 1932 and long associated with the orchestra of Hal Kemp. Date with the Angels was loosely based on the Elmer Rice play Dream Girl, and the series was originally intended to revolve heavily around Vicki's daydreaming tendencies, with more than half of a typical episode dedicated to fantasy sequences. However, the sponsor was not pleased with the fantasy elements and successfully exerted pressure to have them eliminated. "Without our dream sequences," White later said, "our show flattened out and became just one more run-of-the-mill domestic comedy[...]I can honestly say that was the only time I have ever wanted to get out of a show." The series produced 33 filmed episodes before it was canceled in late January 1958. White fulfilled her series commitment by reviving her previous live variety/comedy show, The Betty White Show, for the rest of the season.

Great to catch up with Bill Prain who called it quits in 2018 when his great friend and valued client Fred Peisah succumbed to illness. Bill had been adamant for some time that he'd retire if ever Fred left the racing industry. He talks of Peisah's unwavering loyalty over three decades. Now in retirement on the Gold Coast, Bill says he's still an avid race watcher. He talks of childhood days in Parramatta, and the nickname bestowed upon him by his mother- a nickname he's never been able to shake. Bill talks of his father Col, a former bush jockey in Queensland. Prain Snr had always hoped one of the family would follow in his footsteps. Bill remembers his original apprenticeship to Vic Thompson Snr at Rosehill. The tiny apprentice became disillusioned after two years and looked for a change of stables. You won't believe the luck that came his way. Twelve months later Bill had his first race ride at Gosford. He had the race won won two strides from home. Just when he was thinking he'd never ride a winner, Prain was given an opportunity by trainer Tom Kennedy. Not many apprentices win their first race at a Sydney metropolitan Saturday meeting. Bill talks of the first metropolitan winner he rode for his boss Theo Green. Some time later he got to “strap” the same horse when several overseas jockeys rode in an international event at Rosehill. Colisee Star won the race for an Italian jockey with a famous name. Bill talks of his wonderful association with Hawkesbury trainer, the late Tom Sewell. He recalls the heady days when he would accompany Sewell to country carnivals with a truckload of horses. They had some good times. He hasn't forgotten one unforgettable day at Wyong when Sewell had three runners for three winners. Bill was rewarded with the biggest “sling” of his racing career. Bill talks of his marriage to Julie Herford in 1980 and a move to Wagga where he regenerated his riding career. He received tremendous support and was riding winners all over the region when the unthinkable happened. He was outed for twelve months on a “running and handling” charge at Bathurst. His unblemished record saw it cut in half. He talks of his last winning ride at Randwick in 1987, and a change of direction. He went to work for a while in the hospitality industry. Bill talks of his return to racing as stable foreman for Bernie Kelly who had just started as private trainer to Fred Peisah at Warwick Farm. Soon after Bill was stunned when offered the trainer's role following Kelly's sudden resignation. The popular horseman talks of Fred's Lomar Park Stud at Werombi where he stood a succession of successful stallions. Bill got to train many of the progeny of those stallions. Bill reflects on a few of the special horses to race under the Lomar Park banner, with special acknowledgement of the bonny filly Moment's Pleasure. A shocking draw hindered her chances in the Golden Slipper. He talks of a valued association with a very young Corey Brown. Bill remembers another brilliant little filly called Regal Chamber who won the Magic Night Stakes before running a “blinder” for third in the Golden Slipper. Like Moment's Pleasure she was disadvantaged by a horror draw. During this era Billy chose to ignore some ominous symptoms of impending ill health. Dragged to the Doctor by wife Julie, he was stunned to learn that he had colon cancer. The disease had already spread to other areas. Emergency surgery arrested the immediate problem but he wasn't out of the woods yet. Bill has a stern message to anybody who might choose to ignore tell tale symptoms. He talks of the ongoing ordeal of chemotherapy injections. Now 71 years of age and twenty five years after his initial diagnosis, Billy Prain realises he's one of the lucky ones. He acknowledges the tremendous support of Julie and his three daughters during the dark days of his illness. The popular horseman talks of his three special daughters and the grandchildren who address him by the nickname he was given by his mother all those years ago. It was a delight to catch up with Billy Prain.
