We meet David Alan Lane, aka Squarepeg, today. David has been sharing his trail experience extensively over the past few years on Facebook. He helps with all sorts of advice, including gear and what to eat out on trail. It's a cherished resource for hikers. Now, David has put together another Facebook page that is ambitious in its scope. He has formed Slackpack the Appalachian Trail with Squarepeg, and will shortly be heading north on a big slackpack that will have members drop in and drop out along the way. Steve and David discuss this new venture, as well as his other experiences hiking the Appalachian Trail. You can check out his two Facebook groups here at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1394634307891967 and https://www.facebook.com/SquarepegsHikeTalk Dave Santi and Steve talk about inspiration and motivation in the second of his four pre-hike conversations as he gears up to head out in early March. Our book reading, Happy Hiking, by my friend, Emily Leonard is–of course–written from a woman's POV and a woman's voice. I hope you enjoy listening to my reading of it. If you'd like to buy the book, you can find it on Amazon at Happy Hiking: Falling in love on the Appalachian Trail, or on Emily's website, at Happy Hiking. Our new sponsor for the New Year is TSX Challenge, who turn one week into inspiration for a lifetime. And I should know. Chris at TSX told me he could get me to the top of Mt Whitney…and he did. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

We have Tina Tempest on the show today. Tina, or Chunky, completed a SOBO thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2009. The trail had such an impact upon her life, that she and her husband, Brett, ultimately opened the Quarter Way Inn, a hostel near Marion, Virginia. Tina's breakfast at the hostel is the stuff of legend! But it is one of her side businesses that we're talking about today, as Tina is the owner of Bead By Bead Adventures, producing necklaces for many of the long distance trails, including two that I wear. There are plenty of ways to follow Tina, either online or in person. Check out these links: See Tina in person: AT Gateways at Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia on February 28 - March 2, 2025. Appalachian Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia on May 16-18, 2025 Follow Tina online: Bead by Bead Adventures: Necklaces that are maps of long-distance hiking trails that hikers (or those at home) can use to track their progress. Her website is at www.gobeadbybead.com, on Instagram at Instagram (@gobeadbybead), and on Facebook at Bead by Bead Adventures. Her hostel: Quarter Way Inn: Seasonal Appalachian Trail Hiker Hostel at mile 555-ish in Southwest Virginia. Our main guest today is Nick Thatcher, who I found when he posted an epic Katahdin summit picture on Facebook. I hoped there would be more to his story than a December summit, so I reached out to him. He shared a story of determination and drive, culminating in that epic picture on the top of Katahdin. Nick made some intelligent choices for his hike that should inspire others in their own quest to fulfill an Appalachian Trail thru-hike. His calm demeanor will impress you. David Kibiloski is our guest today. What starts as a story about his Appalachian Trail thru-hike, tracks his evolution into an AT hostel owner, then a 501(c)(3) with AT Kids, followed by Stumble Inn 2.0. It is a fascinating journey. You can follow David on his website, at The Stumble Inn and AT KIDS - A Perfect Partnership. We also started what I hope to be a bidding war for Smercomics, a political satire book that David owns (unopened), but he is willing to offer to the highest bidder from our audience. All funds will go directly to AT Kids. I'm starting the bidding at $100. I hope you'd like to join in. You can email me your bid to steve@hikingradionetwork.com, and we'll run it for a couple of weeks before announcing the winner. You will get an email back from me if your bid is exceeded, just in case you'd like to up it again!! I also wanted to share a link to my friend, Rob Diamond's YouTube page, as he is channelling George Eschleman from a few weeks back by taking dog tags with him on his AT hike this year. In late September, Connor Herson and Fan Yang free climbed Hairline on the east face of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the Lower 48. Hairline is a very steep, 13-pitch route originally climbed in 1987. The 55-meter crux pitch went at 5.13+ or 8b, at over 13,000 feet in elevation. The two other hard pitches go at 5.12 and 5.13-. Connor climbed 5.14c/8c+ at age 14 and became famous at 15 for free climbing the Nose of El Cap. He's now 20 and a student at Stanford University. At age 36, Fan is also a 5.14 climber, and he's an M.D., an engineer, and a researcher in the field of artificial intelligence applied to medicine. He first tried Hairline in 2019 (and freed the crux pitch), but COVID and then difficulty finding partners kept him off the route for several years. Connor and Fan had never really climbed together when they teamed up for Hairline, but their partnership clicked. After a couple of days of preparation on the route, they sent all the key pitches in one day with no falls. From their high point, they downclimbed the East Face Route to camp, then scrambled back up the next morning to finish the easy final pitches to the summit of Mt. Whitney. AAJ assistant editor Michael Levy interviewed the two about their climb.

In this episode we interview Lexie Gritlefeld of California Outdoor Recreation Partnership. Lexie grew up in California and through hiking, trail running and alpine skiing, naturally fell in love with the outdoors. In college she became disconnected with the outside, but that all changed when Lexie and her dad hiked Mt Whitney together. Getting back to what she loved so much as a kid was exactly what she needed. Being off the grid also gave Lexie a convenient way to disconnect from her career in politics. After spending too much money on gas to ski and snowboard at Mammoth, she decided to make the move. Not a year later Lexie took the opportunity with California Outdoor Recreation Partnership - the perfect fit for her passion for outdoor advocacy. Now as the membership director she's building a passionate community that powers a voice for the outdoor recreation industry to shape policy, support investments, and engage an inclusive community of outdoor participants in California around the benefits of outdoor recreation. If you've ever wondered how policy can shape outdoor recreation, or how you may never know when you'll stumble upon your dream job, then this one's for you! Steve's Bio: "I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2014, at the age of 62, as a complete hiking novice. Vowing never to hike again, I wrote a couple of books about my journey, and started podcasting, initially as a method of publicizing my books. Yet the podcast grew far beyond my books and kept me engaged with the hiking community. Since then, I have attempted (and failed) three times on the John Muir Trail, completed the Camino de Santiago (Les Francés), the West Highland Way in Scotland, and a second Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Then, in August / September 2022, I was able to successfully complete the TSX Challenge in California, when I summited Mt Whitney, to erase the memories of my unsuccessful JMT attempts. Going forward into my 70s, I have little doubt that new adventures will tempt me once more. I'm still up for a challenge!" Have you ever hiked in the pitch black night with nothing to guide you but your headlamp and a somewhat reliable GPS?  We've done more than our fair share of night hiking, but Whitney wins for being the most impressive, oppressive, and exhilarating! We scored a single-day permit for Mt. Whitney for July 31st of 2022! Now, what this means is that we were blessed with a 24-hour period in which to hike the tallest peak in the contiguous U.S.A., 14,505 ft of forests, creeks, and granite over ~23.5 miles up and back down with ~6,400 ft of total hiked ascent (according to my Garmin; 20.9 miles, 6,600ft according to AllTrails).  This trip was made extra-special by some dramatic weather that opened up on us with ~5 miles to go in our hike, resulting in washed out trails, washed out selves, and rockfalls booming down the mountain as though Thor was having a temper-tantrum. We loved a lot, learned a lot, and lucked out a LOT on this trip! Do you have to run 100 miles to stay healthy?  Probably not.  But we do know that successful aging requires a sense of purpose, social interactions, a positive mental attitude, and a lot of moving.  Bob checks all of those boxes with a dose of humility and gratitude.  I hope you enjoy and are inspired by this interview. Marci Kornegay has arrived in Tehachapi, California and celebrated one month on the Pacific Crest Trail, northbound with 567 miles in the bag. It's been a tough trail since we last spoke to her as she crossed the Mojavi Desert in triple digit temperatures surviving on snow melt found at water collection stations. As we hear though it's her water filter system that she carries with her that has kept her hydrated, despite knowing that dead animals, including a skunk, that have drowned in those wells! Marci has crossed the biggest wind farm in the US with 50 mph winds giving her some respite from the 100 degree temperatures. The next 27 miles will be equally as challenging as she climbs the High Sierra taking extra care to filter the greasy orange aquabloom water which is particularly toxic. This will mean carrying extra water 7-8 litres adds up to 14-16 lbs extra weight but she would rather carry water than food when it come down to survival… her thirst is more important than hunger. As she explains her next celebration point will be when she reaches Kennedy Meadows after she has climbed Mt Whitney which, at 14,505 ft is the highest peak in the lower 48. Marci is anticipating a four mile stretch climbing 2-3000 ft as she continues up through California facing new challenges ahead…. there are bears in those hills!Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: June 13, 2022WiSP Sports is the ONLY GLOBAL PODCAST FOR WOMEN'S SPORT with more than 60 hosts, 1600+ episodes across 50 shows and over 7 million downloads. I always get excited whenever I talk to people who share the same interest. Hopefully, we could put together an episode with me as a guest on his show too. But we'll see.. I'm not sure if I make a good guest. What do you think? I'm really amazed at all Guy has going - the fly shop, the classes, the podcast, the band. He surely is living the life he loves and like he said, none of it feels like work.  Oh and Guy's band, Stonefly.. man they create good music! Their songs are definitely going on my playlist. I met them both at Trail Days this past weekend, and we got into a discussion on the benefits–or otherwise–of relocating the Southern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail to Alabama, using the Pinhoti Trail to effect that change. This is a controversial subject that Nathan and Kimm are well-versed in. Indeed, Nimblewill Nomad, who was with the two of them at Trail Days, got particularly het up over the subject. Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2021/07/hiking-mount-whitney-with-don-coddington-episode-1896 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS HIKING MOUNT WHITNEY Don and Vinnie tried to hike Mt. Whitney recently. First, they stayed in Lone Pine. It's a very, very small place. For Mt. Whitney, they only give 100 passes a day. The question Vinnie and Don have is: why? There is so much space! For other mountains in CA, WA, and CO, there are thousands every day. They finally learned why, and got the 411 on the mountain's rangers. This year, Don and Vinnie climbed it without a pass -- they know this wasn't right, but they picked up trash on the way up and down. They tried to do the hike a couple of days. To prep, they did a shorter hike. After a failed attempt for Vinnie, they were plagued by thunderstorms. Vinnie, for whatever reason, got really sick while he was hiking and couldn't summit. He was disoriented and flu-ey, and he hadn't been drinking water because that made him feel sick, too. Vinnie was nearly falling over. Don thought he physically lost him at one point! He thought maybe he had gotten too dizzy and fallen off the mountain. ULTRA SALT Don had some misconceptions. You CAN overdo salt. He would do 1000 mg of salt with 16 oz of water.  Really, you only need that with a liter of water. If you feel lightheaded or are going to do heavy exercise, take a couple of Ultra Salts, but there is a limit. Vinnie says take 15-20 oz of water per Ultra Salt. Too much water without electrolytes can be a problem; too much salt is the opposite problem. DON'S FAT LOSS Don has lost a substantial amount of weight. Now, he can hike up and down Mount Whitney with much more ease. Zone 2 training was also important for him. For Don, pizza and ice cream is what got him high. He needed to break the addiction and emotion-numbing effect of food. WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE FAT DOC 2 IS AVAILABLE ON iTUNES and AMAZON Please also share it with family and friends! Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2021/07/accidental-fasting-mt-whitney-more-episode-1894 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS ACCIDENTAL FASTING Vinnie isn't personally a big fan of intermittent fasting. He's not the guy who fasts, and he thinks fasting is not for everyone. But, the perk of being fat adapted, is if you can't get good food over some period of time, you'll be okay. This happened to Vinnie. When he climbed much of Mount Whitney, he didn't eat. He could only make it because he was fat-adapted. When you're in a pinch, being fat-adapted can certainly help. It's also good when you're traveling --- many airports only have crap. MT. WHITNEY Vinnie and Don tried to summit Mt. Whitney while Vinnie was in town for Badwater. However, he got up much of the mountain and began feeling like he had the flu. Don then couldn't find him on the mountain! Vinnie was very dehydrated. Fat adaption saved the day for him. He did the mountain again, but only got a little ways up the mountain because it started storming with lightning. Jean and Ken summited Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental US, on what they thought would be their last day of the trip. On the summit they were caught in a severe snow and lightning storm. Using their ice axes, they began to descend via the north face in full self-arrest position. Ken fell 800 feet down the mountain while Jean, not knowing his fate, continued down slowly and methodically towards him. Then, at one point during her descent, Jean fell 165 feet bouncing on rocks through a cliff band enduring massive trauma to her body. Mimi Anderson started running at the age of 36 (after a long battle with anorexia). Over the next 20 years, she went onto set multiple Guinness World Records. Her achievements include:  - completing the Badwater Double; the return trip from Death Valley where the race starts to Mt Whitney, and back - a journey of 469km, - winning outright the 6633 Extreme Ultramarathon, a self-supported non-stop race over 560km in the Arctic Circle in which you drag on a sled everything you need to survive that took her almost 6 days to finish, and - setting Guinness World Record for the fastest time by a female running the length of England and the record for a woman running across Ireland. Now it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. In 2017, she attempted to set the record for running across America - that’s over 5000km. Sadly, that attempt ended due to injury and it also brought to an end to her ultrarunning career. But you can’t keep a woman like Mimi down for very long! So in her late 50s, she learnt to ride a bike, overcame a life long fear of open water and finished her first triathlon. In this episode, I begin with a brief reaction to the cancellation of the NYC and Berlin Marathons and include a few additional tips on how to pivot from them to another goal (to build on the discussion from episode 188).  Then, I turn to a fascinating conversation with Lisa Tamati, an ultra endurance athlete from New Zealand who has raced over 140 ultra marathons in her career covering over 40,000 racing miles! She's run across deserts and across the Himalayas and is the first woman from New Zealand to finish the Badwater Ultra Marathon. Badwater is a 135 mile race through Death Valley to the top of Mt Whitney, and Lisa finished it not once but twice! Most recently, she has been on perhaps her most difficult journey yet helping her mother recover from a severe brain aneurysm that left her completely without memory and unable to function. Over 4 years, Lisa used all of the lessons she learned from enduring in her ultra career to relentlessly pursue a return to health for her mom. That journey is chronicled in her new book - Relentless, How a mother and daughter defied the odds - and I am happy to report there is a happy ending as her mom has returned to nearly full health. Lisa teaches us a little bit about endurance and ultra training in this episode and a lot about being relentless in your training and in life. For those not familiar, The Badwater 135 begins in Death Valley below sea level, and climbs up to the Mt. Whitney Portal, which is the trailhead for Mt Whitney. With over 14000 feet of climbing that isn’t the hardest part about this race. It is hot. So hot. With no shade, no escape from the pavement, and no mercy. Brett came seemingly out of nowhere in 2009 when he set the coveted FKT on the John Muir Trail, going Unsupported 7 hrs faster than the Supported time. "I think it took Barkley to convince some of the holdouts." He finished Barkley in 2011 and again in 2012, with what is still the fastest time (the course changes so there is never a "course record").  Definitely go to his Athlete page on this website for your bucket list of the most massive hillclimbs: Telescope Peak, Mt Whitney, and the SoCal Triple Crown, which he invented.  And he is a high-end scientist and researcher. This contributed to his success - like other non-runners before him, Brett took a very calculated and methodical approach - he actually practiced filling and drinking from water bottles. "I obsessively focussed on how to minimize time loss ... throughout the course of the JMT, (just using water bottles), an extra 2 minutes each time equals a full hour lost." Listen and learn!

Today’s guest is Melissa Urie aka Ranga Mel. Mel was a guest for episode 46 back in October where she told us about racing the Epic 5. Today we get to hear about how Mel was the first woman in history to finish Uberman. The Uberman website describes it as “ the world's most challenging Ultra Triathlon.  The 556 mile course goes from the Mists of Avalon to the Snows of Mount Whitney.  Starting on Catalina Island, participants swim 21 miles in the open Pacific Ocean to the shores of Palos Verdes. The 400 mile bike route leaves the city of Angels and climbs 20,000 vertical feet before descending to Badwater basin, at 200 feet below sea level, the lowest point in North America. From Badwater, athletes run 135 miles  through Death Valley before ascending 13,000 feet to the trailhead @ Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States.” You are going to LOVE this episode, so sit back and enjoy.   Connect with Melissa Urie: Instragram: @rangamel Facebook: Melissa Urie -Ultra Endurance Athlete     Age Groupies is excited to announce a new sponsor: Cycle Cast! Medical Error Interviews
Erik Johnson: Mold Warrior - Escaping Toxic Mold and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Exposing the Greatest Medical Error in History.

Medical Error Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2019 52:58

In part 2 of my interview with mold warrior Erik Johnson, he tells about the lengths he’s had to go to get and keep himself healthy. Erik terms his approach ‘extreme mold avoidance’ - and that involves a modified and mold-free camper vehicle, and also mapping, and then avoiding, areas and buildings with high levels of toxic black mold Stachybotrys Chartarum. Erik has been relentless in his efforts to bring awareness to the public, patients and researchers that toxic mold is an element of ‘chronic fatigue syndrome’.  Yet there is resistance by the Centre for Disease Control, by researchers, and by the medical profession, to consider or acknowledge how unseen toxic mold in our workplace, public and home environments may be making many people very sick. As you will hear Erik explain, there has been incredible pressure to hide the impact of toxic mold on human health. Erik also shares how the derogatory label of ‘chronic fatigue syndrome’ re-classified an entire illness from an ‘infectious illness’ diagnosis, to the ‘all in your head’ insult. SHOW NOTES Erik's Mold Map 0:05:15 The whole point of redefining CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) was to put distance between CFS and the initial incident it was based on to keep it in maximum confusion - and loosened up on the psychiatric exclusion, whereas Holmes (definition) was clear that psychiatric must be excluded 0:06:00 When Erik saw strong connection between mold and CFS, he proposed to Dr Cheney that since he was focused on the viral factor, Erik would focus on the mold factor 0:07:00 The 1994 study by Chester Levine "Association of concurrence between sick building syndrome and CFS: Epidemic neurasthenia revisited" - was a study of clusters, including Truckee school - mentions other clusters including Elk Grove in California, where same exact malady emerged in teacher in a sick building 0:08:00 It took Erik several years to find out what specific mold was involved, but it was Stachybotrys Chartarum (SC), the dreaded black mold, same as the Lake Tahoe - Erik thought this should be included in the CFS criteria so that they become a putative mold reactivity patient 0:09:00 If CFS patients have mold reactivity, they can be instructed on how to avoid it and reduce symptoms - Erik tried to identify the worse place / buildings in Lake Tahoe and created a map to avoid them and started to recover 0:10:00 Erik thought he could maximize his recovery be spending more time in the nearby Nevada desert - he was eager to get back into aviation and hanging out a small airport - one day he sees a 'crazy man' out in the desert heat raking, by hand, a 700 foot landing strip 0:11:00 Nearby was a tractor with rake attached, set up to do the job - Erik asked him about it and got a strange look, as his mental wheels were turning - he said 'I've got this strange illness, I'm from Incline Village, Nevada, and doctors tell me I have CFS, and I come out to the desert because it is the only thing that helps' - he was coming to the desert for the exact same reason as Erik 0:12:00 They started telling other people - and taking them to the 'toxic' areas of town to see if they reacted and decide if they wanted to try to avoid mold - this is how the CFS Mold Tour began - he's taken many prominent people on this tour, author Julie Rehmeyer (Through the Shadow Lands) and she became a mold avoider Powerful Neurotoxin 0:13:00 Jennifer Brea, director of documentary Unrest also got Mold Tour and realized she needed to avoid mold too - what is curious to Erik, is that no researcher enquired about why Jen was avoiding mold in her documentary 0:14:00 Erik has asked researchers at screenings of Unrest why they think Jen is doing that - but he has not been able to drum up any interested researchers - because SC is one of the most powerful neurotoxins known to man, it is essentially like nerve gas, so neuroinflammatory - repeated exposures cause neurological symptoms similar to nerve agents 0:15:00 The chronic inflammation puts stress on the nerves that the electrical impulses in the nerve become inhibited, and to compensate, the nerves thicken their myelin sheath to help nerve impulses and restore function 0:16:00 For a long time, researchers assumed these neurological symptoms were close to multiple sclerosis (MS) - so with intracranial hypertension, neurological information from toxic mold exposure, where the physical damage perpetuates symptoms, like in Chiari Malformation where the brain is literally pushing itself out of the skull, opening pressure on spinal taps, and spinal fluid leaks 0:17:00 Erik thinks breakdown of ligaments and collagen contribute to neck problems in some CFS patients and is due to downstream effects of chronic inflammation over years - Erik's health did pretty good for a few years 0:18:00 Erik would also check wind direction to avoid toxic areas, and being down wind of them, in town - if he couldn't avoid these areas, he would shower and change clothes as soon as possible 0:19:00 By reducing inflammatory response and cytokine cascade, he's been able to live like a normal person - Erik had to find a home free of mold - he also built a camper out of mold resistant materials to drive around that had a shower in it 0:20:00 This allows him to decontaminate quickly - but in 1994 he slowly started getting worse - turns out it was neighbouring houses, the sewer - Erik got sicker and sicker and went to Dr Peterson 0:21:00 But Dr Peterson was too busy with his viral interests - Erik got worse, almost bed ridden again - Erik was diagnosed, again, with CFS with reactivated HHV6 - Dr Peterson said Erik's only option was the drug Ampligen, an experimental medication that pushes the immune system into high gear     Desert Living   0:22:00 Some people have a spectacular response to Ampligen - but free Ampligen in the trial was only open to very sick / bed ridden patients - since Erik could still walk, he would only be eligible for the cost recovery program, but Ampligen cost about $60k / year and Erik could not afford that and his insurance company had canceled his insurance because he had CFS 0:23:00 Erik decided to try even harder to avoid mold, extreme avoidance and see if he could max out his health - Dr Peterson didn't think it would work, but since Erik couldn't afford Ampligen, what was there to lose - Erik bought a camper and drove it to the desert and spent as much time as possible in pristine environments and once again his health improved 0:24:00 Within 6 months of extreme mold avoidance, Erik was climbing Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in connected USA, 13,500 feet high and a 25 mile hike - takes about 20 hours to climb 0:25:00 Erik thought that climbing Mt Whitney as a CFS patient avoiding mold would be impossible for researchers to ignore - but their reaction was 'how nice for you' 0:26:00 Erik says that mold is the common factor in all these clusters - but researchers don't want to investigate the mold aspect - he hopes one day we'll know why they are not interested 0:27:00 CFS emerges after a trigger, usually a viral infection - researchers focus on the trigger as if it was the sole cause 0:28:00 From the moment the CDC (Centre for Disease Control) announced they intended to collate the results, Erik began contacting CFS researchers and explaining he was the prototype patient for CFS, but he did not get one positive response 0:29:00 By the time the 1988 Holmes definition of CFS was published, Erik realized this was more than just a scientific endeavour, and more than documenting the toxic mold aspect, it was sociological research to see how researchers would handle a situation like this, and that's how Erik approached CFS research 0:30:00 Erik created a standard phrase to see how doctors and researchers responded: "I'm an Incline Village survivor and prototype patient for the 1988 Holmes criteria, would you like to hear about it?" - never, not once over 30 years has Erik had a positive interest response, it is mind boggling     Confidentiality Agreement   0:31:00 When Osler's Web came out, Erik already realized he was getting 100% negative response from researchers and no interest in following up on the Lake Tahoe outbreak - but Erik couldn't believe that on page 25, the Truckee teacher cluster - Erik's teachers - is clearly described - when Erik makes his assertion that CFS was never investigated, it sounds unbelievable - but those teachers told Holmes there was something in that school room 0:32:00 In Osler's Web, it talks about the disdain Holmes had for these teachers - on page 49, a couple of patients ambush Dr Holmes and explained about that school room and the infrequently changed air filters in that room and asked him to examine the air filters in that room 0:33:00 Turns out the filters did have the toxic mold SC - the school realized they had toxic mold and hired remediators to clean it up and the incidence of illness decreased - the school and its teachers, remediators, towns people and local doctors know about this - but not CFS researchers 0:34:00 Erik went to CFS symposiums and said he could take them to the locations and introduce them to the remediators who cleaned up the mold - Erik ran into a problem: the school authorities did want people to know about it, the teachers are fearful of repercussions so keep quiet - and the remediators said they couldn't disclose because they had a confidentiality agreement with the schools 0:35:00 So the only person who has no vested interest and willing to describe it is Erik - the remediation of the mold was in the newspapers - so clearing up CFS is simply doing some epidemiology research 0:36:00 Erik climbs Mt Whitney every year to celebrate his recovery - he posts about it online and how has helped other people recover from CFS - author Julie Rehmeyer is the most high profile person he's helped - she wrote an article for the Washington Post: What is CFS and why is more not being done to study this disease? 0:37:00 In the 2015 article Julie describes how none of the other treatments her doctor had tried had much effect - Julie heard about the extreme mold avoiders and decided to come to Incline Village and Erik took her the sick buildings - after a short period of mold avoidance her post exertional malaise symptom had disappeared and she was climbing mountains     Media Interest, But No Researcher Interest   0:38:00 So we have a direct intervention for CFS and it deserves research - but still, no researchers have looked into mold in CFS 0:40:00 SC has been studied quite a bit, but only known in the mold community, not in the CFS community - the CDC puts pressure not to research mold - they don't want this very expensive problem to come to public light 0:41:00 Because a lot of schools and public buildings will be affected - the CDC did its own toxic mold investigation in 1984 and found exactly what they didn't want to find and they buried that research through paralysis by analysis - but stated that nothing conclusive was discovered and more research is needed, but they didn't do it 0:42:00 Erik has returned to flying, a very expensive hobby, and mold avoidance is a very expensive therapy and includes avoiding sick buildings and immediately decontaminating if he is exposed - so that curtailed how much flying he could do, so he turned to mountain climbing and hiking - Erik does a ton of advocacy work around mold, and that doesn't pay, he hasn't made a dime 0:43:00 Erik goes to the ME/CFS conferences and tells his story to researchers as they take an active disinterest - like Hillary Johnson said, the politics is so compelling it draws you back in, its unique, and the sheer unbelievable, bizarre aspect that keeps sucking Erik back in - he can't believe this happened and the medical and research communities behaved in this way 0:44:00 Erik believes to fix the problem, it needs to be brought to light - the medical profession needs to realize they've committed an epic failures in their entire history - perhaps the embarrassment will force them to reconsider how they do business 0:45:00 Erik doesn't think any one will believe or understand this complex convoluted history until a movie is made about it - Erik's basic premise is that a researcher would want evidence, and so Erik developed a test 0:46:00 Back in the 1800s when Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician in Austria, discovered that hand washing killed germs - he noted that the 2 health clinics had different mortality rates - the midwife's clinic had a very good success rate, but the doctor's clinic had an unbelievably high mortality rate from childbed fever (puerperal sepsis)     Money Can't Buy A Ride Like This   0:47:00 A pathologist doing an autopsy on a childbed fever death, nicked himself and he then died of the same illness - this suggested something, 'cadavers particles', had been transferred to the doctor through the blood - Semmelweis implemented hand washing with lyme / bleach and instantly reduced the mortality rate at the doctor's clinic - there were no autopsy's at the midwife's clinic 0:48:00 Semmelweis didn't know it was germs, but he didn't need to - he only needed to note that there was difference between the buildings and start to investigate - the history of CFS is similar: sick buildings making people sick 0:49:00 But no current researchers are investigating - in effect, there are no more Semmelweis - Erik has used the internet to get this info out and spending a lot of time in social media groups building up a following to put pressure on researchers and all this will come to light 0:50:00 Why does Erik keep doing advocacy? Hillary Johnson described Dr Cheney when he was in the middle of his fight with the CDC as saying "Money can't buy a ride like this"       Connect with Erik Johnson:   Facebook: The Erik Johnson Effect   Twitter: @ErikMoldWarrior   ______________________________________________     Be a podcast patron Support Medical Error Interviews on Patreon by becoming a Patron for $2 / month for audio versions.  Premium Patrons get access to video versions of podcasts for $5 / month. Whether you are training for a triathlon, another race of some kind, a hike….these steps will help you feel more prepared. I felt the most prepared when I hiked Mt. Whitney a few years ago. I did research, spoke to people who had done it before, did training hikes, cross trained, elevation trained, etc. While I was on the hike, it was hard, but I felt good. I felt prepared. This only comes with training- physically, and mentally.  5 Steps: Put it on the calendar Give yourself at least 3 months to train Drink lots of water and get quality sleep Modify workouts week of Have fun! If you are thinking about doing a race, a hike, stop thinking about it and do it! Sign up or mark it on your calendar. If you are thinking about doing a race, a hike, stop thinking about it and do it! Sign up or mark it on your calendar- get the permits. Do whatever you need to do to commit yourself to this event. Bring friends in. I find my friends are more likely to join if I jump on board and commit myself. I, of course, talked with them about it first, put the bug in their ear, but then there comes a time you have to just do it. This happened with getting permits for Mt Whitney, and committing to this triathlon. I got the permits for Whitney and then whoever could come came. I signed up for the tri and told my friends and this is when they knew I was talking serious business.  If you want something to happen you must take action. You can’t wait for someone else to do it. Once you step out, others will join. And even if they don’t, you are doing this for yourself!  Follow me on Instagram @nikkiromani to see how I train and get updates on the results from the triathlon I'm in! Eventually getting a hitch back to the trail they are taken the wrong way and left stranded in the middle of nowhere! Luckily before too long a friendly local gives them a lift up the 22 mile dead-end road to Horseshoe Meadow, where they help a stranded motorist get his car out of the deep snow. Hiking up the few sludgy miles of Trail Pass back to the PCT, the weather is forbidding, but the beauty overcomes the cold wet conditions as they make a few miles past Cottonwood Pass to Chicken Spring Lake. The next morning they awake to frozen socks, frozen shoes, frozen gloves; frozen everything! They start out with a big climb in threatening weather, and soon realise that 20 miles days are but a pipe dream in the Sierras at the moment. After such a heavy winter they will be lucky to make 10 miles a day through the snow. Despondence sets in as they reconsider their ability to reach Mt Whitney in time to climb it; and Molly finds that the effect of such a tight schedule is similar to work or uni deadlines, a mindset that she'd come to the PCT to avoid. Funk & Cricket have pushed on with the original goal in mind, but Molly & Ethan fall back in the hail & snow (SOBO is further back down the trail) and seek shelter under a tree, where they come to the decision to abort their plan for Mt Whitney and revert to a more relaxed attitude to their daily goals. A tough day on the PCT, though Ethan's spirits are lifted with the spectacular sight of a Bald Eagle perched in a tree. Episode 57 of Trail & Errors.

He tells us how he got into the outdoors and some great stories from his summits of Mt Whitney, sometimes summiting twice in one day!   Facebook Twitter   Instagram The Outdoor Biz Podcast   Please give us a rating and review HERE   Show Notes Jack tells us how he got into the outdoors and some great stories from his summits of Mt Whitney, sometimes summiting twice in one day! First Exposure to the Outdoors I was in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970 and my wife and I got married in 68. I married into her family and she had two brothers and two more sisters so five kids. She was a preacher's kid so father Sadler who was his name, he would take church groups up into the Sierras and I mean it was quite an undertaking. I was invited obviously to go along and it's my first real experience in the Sierras and the backcountry. I remember hiking in my heavy heavy-duty boots, I had a 10 pound mummy bag, what an experience. I guess that opened the door. Things we talked about Whitney Portal Store, Doug Tompson Crazy Jack Adventure 16, John Mead Sierra Mountaineering, Kurt Wedberg Point Loma Nazarene University baseball Mark Fulton 8,000 Meter Challenge Advice, tips You could just start today by just putting on your walking shoes and walk around the block yes nothing else I mean people ask me all the time well how do you get in shape get off you know yeah you just have to go out and start you start so slow and then you know you progress and you feel good and then you might even need to check in with your doctor to make sure you know what you're trying to do but but still it's a matter of just getting up and getting going. I hope other people get out. If it's not the Sierras get somewhere else do something else. It's out there for us to adventure into and I hope that's something that they get from this . . . just go!  Other Outdoor Activities Bicycling, walking Favorite Books Mount Whitney- Mountain Lore from the Whitney Store, by Doug Tompson Best Gear Purchase under $100 Steri-pen  Connect with Crazy Jack Website- crazyjacknortham.com
