In this episode, the FAQ is: What should I tell people who think I can't travel solo? Today's Destination is Lake Como, Italy Today's Misstep: Sometimes, you don't love your roommates when you share a room. Here's why. Travel Advice: Don't buy another timeshare. If you have one, it's really hard to sell it. FAQ: What do I tell people who think I can't travel solo? Answer: Ask them why not. Then listen. Then, address each one of their questions or comments if you like. No one says you need permission to travel solo, but it would be good to tell them you are prepared, have planned for things to go wrong, and have taken this travel step by step to be more likely to be successful. They may be telling you in a way that they will miss you, but don't know how to say that. They could also be jealous. They could wish they could make this trip themselves. So there could be a lot of hidden reasons why they have those opinions. Today's destination: Lake Como, Italy Lake Como, Italy, was a quick train ride from Milan, Italy. On a hot day, about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, I ventured to Lake Como to cool down. I went there solo for three days, staying in town at a hostel that cost me $150 a night for a “middle bunk.” That was the most I paid for sleeping anywhere around the world. It did have a bathroom with a shower en suite. It may have been less costly if I had booked earlier than two weeks in advance. Either way, here's some advice if you are heading there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Como_San_Giovanni_railway_station It was a quick walk from the Como San Giovanni train station to town, so you don't need a car here if you stay in the main city. The lake is a breathtaking view from wherever you are, so the water keeps you cool, even on a boat. Buy the all-day ferry ticket if you can stay for the day. https://lakecomotravel.com/boat-tours-ferry-lake-como/ https://www.navigazionelaghi.it/en/services/disabled-accessibility-and-prm/ Explore all the ferries and see the episode's notes with links, including accessibility information for getting on and off the ferries. I spent a full day on a ferry tour of the lake, three hours north at its furthest and with more than one tributary. I got off at Menagio and found a paid private club called Lido, but I did not swim there. A few minutes later, while swimming, I met a family from Denmark at a free swim spot. I walked the town and had Nutella-flavored gelato. I then Took the ferry to Varenna. I walked the town. Then, I took another Ferry to Bellagio. The line was too long to get back on, so I stayed on board. I got off later in the smaller town. I met another couple from Germany. They agreed it was dreadfully Hot. I Stopped to cool my feet in the sea at Argegno—thunderstorms in the morning. I walked to town. https://www.explorelakecomo.com/go/lido-di-argegno#google_vignette I met a girl from Munich and her friend, who took a photo of me with some flowers. Bellagio has the George Clooney Villa. Most of the music I hear is American pop, not Italian. https://www.bellagiolakecomo.com/en/bellagio-lake-como-italy/poi-points-of-interest/public-transport-lake-como The lake is carved into a deep canyon. The hills above can be accessed by a special bus-like on rails called a Funicular. I took the Lake Como Funicular at 7:15 pm, running every 30 minutes until midnight. I highly recommend you do this and give yourself time at the top. The views are stunning, and there's a lot to explore here. It connects Como to the town of Brunate. The trip lasts 7 minutes and reaches the maximum allowed gradient of 55%—so that's steep! The fee is small: only 3 euros (4 dollars) for a single journey and 5,50 euros (7 dollars) for a round trip. So worth it! When leaving the train station, notice the sculpture of large human hands nearby. It is beautiful and dedicated to disabled service people. One hand is healthy,, and one is wounded. https://www.explorelakecomo.com/go/monumento-ai-caduti-per-servizio Also, I noticed a little bit of Las Vegas here; inside the train station, there was mini gambling, like in Las Vegas. Ironically, there's a hotel in Las Vegas that's called Bellagio. Today's Misstep: You don't always love your roommates, right? I went to bed by 9 p.m. because I was busy the next day. My bed was the middle bunk, and there were 5 in the room booked. At 11 p.m., two girls arrived and talked in street voices. I asked them to quiet down nicely. They did not. I finally did get to sleep, but it was rude of them to wake others with their voices and chatter. Would you agree? Today's Travel Advice: Don't buy a timeshare or another one. If you have one, it's tough to sell it. We got conned when we tried to sell our timeshare, so don't let that happen to you. We only lost a few thousand dollars, but it was a warning. These are not easy to sell. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If they ask you for money, walk away. Timeshares are hard to navigate to use your week. I spend hours each year trying to book one, and it's very frustrating. I want to bring meaning to your future travels. Sign up for the Dr. Travelbest newsletter. Then there is the stuff that does harm the community—a corrupt politician who tries to overthrow the rule of law, discrimination, violence, pollution. This stuff happens, it's the definition of injustice. But again, anger is not the right response. Not because these things aren't upsetting, but because they are bad remedies to the problem. When the community is at risk, with justice at stake, we need our wits about us. It's here that we need to be most controlled, most in command of all our faculties. We can be angered at what is happening, but we cannot afford to respond in anger. We need to be rational, strategic, patient, courageous, creative (as well as forgiving, empathetic, and nurturing in the way that our many emails have highlighted about the brilliance of the Civil Rights activists). We need to bring our best to fight the worst.YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8hmX7RPyYo]If you're serious about being your most controlled self when the stakes are high, then check out our 11-day Taming Your Temper Course. In today’s episode, I cover a bit of a neuroscience technique of reframing a question so that it’s more focused on what’s possible over what’s not. I apply this framework to not only questions you might have now, given what’s happening in our world due to the Coronavirus but also how to apply this framework to questions you might have about your teaching.
Two years ago now I was sitting beside my dying dog and I was questioning whether I could put her down. I saw her suffer more and more as each moment passed. I asked for answers. I have peace in my soul with regard to that life-changing question. I had no idea that I had been practicing devotional meditation. When you have questions, and we all do, ask your question, find the meditation practice that works for you and practice it. Renew the conversation. The answers are all around us in the way that you need to hear them. Suffer the illusion of suffering alone no longer. Share your answers out on the planet because you have no idea who is waiting to hear from you. We do not walk alone.

If you don't already know, on my website there is an "Ask CarlaRae" page. I always have a link to it on the bottom of my show notes for every episode, which is CarlaRaeArneson.com/AskCarlaRae. I love receiving messages from our listeners! Usually I get organizing questions, suggestions for topic ideas that people are interested in hearing about on the show, and sometimes I get random messages of people just wanting to just say hello, which I REALLY love. I am the only person who reads or listens to these messages, they do not go to a virtual assistant or customer service tech. They go straight to me. And I always try to reply within a day or two depending on if we're traveling or not. Every once in a while I feature some of those questions I receive on the show, with permission from the sender, of course. On today's episode I share with you a very unique question I received from one of listeners. Welcome to episode 161, I’m recording very early this week so please excuse me if any news that broke this week isn't covered! I had a very interesting conversation this week with someone who was sharing their experience with being found by customers on Linkedin. Whilst this mostly happens via visibility through content and engagement, it can also happen via search…ie a potential customer searches for you via a LinkedIn search. We know this is most common in recruitment but it got me thinking about how often if happens outside of recruiters searching for candidates and that in turn made me realize that I hadn’t done any optimization testing for quite some time. So that is the main topic this week, I hope you find it useful. But before that….. Interesting Stuff I Saw This Week Weekly Roundup: Message and Share Comments, Calendar Sync, Personalized Job Insights I also heard a rumour this week that the infamous “I don't know” induced restricted account is no more! It's hard to know if this is true, on the one hand the article regarding a restricted account has been removed from the help centre but at the same time the "I don't know” response is still available when you ignore an invitation. I have also spoken to someone who has a restricted account, and it has not been lifted. What is your experience with this? There has been much talk about the disappointing numbers of views that people are getting for the articles on LinkedIn but this week I spoke with an ex-colleague who has almost 150,000 followers. They are getting an average of 5000 views per article and a staggering 150,000 views of their posts in the feed! Clearly, some people are still gaining great benefit from LinkedIn. LinkedIn seemed to be really pushing growing networks at the moment. To celebrate reaching 500 million members they have been displaying information such as this on your homepage (mobile and desktop). In addition to this, they are also diverted new to the ad connections page (from importing contacts) after you have sent someone an invitation to connect. This is really bad practice by LinkedIn and is encouraging the wrong behaviour! I can only assume that new membership numbers have decreased and they are trying hard to get back to 2 new members a second. LinkedIn search engine optimization It has been a long time since I tested profile optimization and with the new user interface I thought it was about time I had a look again. The search that I undertook was for the keyword “copywriter" and I compared the results between my account, an account with no connections, and accounts with circa 100 connections and my account on a Sales Navigator lead builder search. The areas that I assessed were as follows; Keywords throughout the profile Keywords in the headline Keywords in job titles Keywords in company names Network (the effect of 1st tier, 2nd tier etc) Shared connections Location Skills/endorsements Interests Profile strength This can by no means be described as a thorough, scientific evaluation but when I add it to previous tests that I have undertaken, it did bring some very interesting results. From what I can gather there are 5 important elements to ensure that you rank high in a search result. Enter your details below to download my report and get access to the video showing the actual search and results. For the first time in a long time, I have a cool thing to tell you about! As you know I am a big fan of using Google extensions that allow you to expand prewritten text from short snippets but did you know you can also do this on mobile? TextExpander 3 will create a custom keyboard for your iPhone which will allow you to use snippets that can be created with the app or in the desktop version. It works fantastically well and is a massive timesaver. Question: I'm getting very low views on my articles and posts and subsequently very little engagement. What can I do to improve things? Answer: Ask more questions (in the post as well as the article itself) to stimulate engagement Use # in your posts and articles. Currently, you seem to be getting # confused with @mentions. @mention relevant people/companies. Not the crazy lists you see but 3 or 4 people who are either quoted in the article or someone she knows will find it interesting. Find 'high score' influencers on LinkedIn and make friends with them (engage with them share their stuff etc) so that it would be appropriate to @mention or share an article directly to them. Experiment with posting at different times of the day. Commuting times are often effective but her audience are CEO's so I might try evenings and especially Sunday evening when she might get their attention. Make sure the images in posts are the right size (3x2 ratio) Make your articles a little more punchy, challenging and debatable. Some are a little too long for most people's attention spans! Tweet @LinkedInEditors for each article The algorithm clearly doesn't like you for some reason. This could be based on previous activities (spamming, overposting in groups etc) or just that you haven't got it's attention yet!

Life is changing rapidly these days and it really seems hard but even thinking about suicide is not the answer. There are people all around you who can help, to talk and support you, even if it seems like that may not be true. Family members, if there is talk of suicide in your home, it is time to get help, not tomorrow or next week or after a vacation, NOW! The conversation must be of help, support and action. This is not a gray area, it is black and white. Action is required. What happens to a family when the talk of suicide is hushed, not noticed or tabooed? It happens. My guest today, Carl David, is familiar with suicide, his brother took his life when he was young. Carl, now, decades later, has committed to speaking to anyone who will listen about the effects of suicide on a family. He will be sharing how he carried the event with him all his adult life. Carl is the author of Bader Field; How my family survived Suicide. It is his life as it unfolded since losing his brother. Yes, life is hard, yes, it is trying at times, and yes, life is a gift to cherish everyday. If you have concerns there may be an issue in your family, listen as we discuss this life changing event.
