In this episode, I'm sharing one of my favorite soundtracks: It will be a success or a story. It's the mindset I use every time I try something new—like hosting a live event or leading a book club that nobody shows up to (yep, that actually happened… to a brave 9-year-old and to me). Whether your next goal works out exactly like you hoped or turns into a story you'll tell for years, this episode will remind you that both outcomes are worth it.In This Episode:Make sure to follow me on Instagram and share with your friends!Keep up with my book list on GoodReads!Sign up for my newsletter, Try This!Book me to speak at your event or to your team!My new book All It Takes Is a Goal is available! With Dr Thom and The Professor busy prepping for their upcoming expeditions offshore, we had time to squeeze out one more episode before they set sail. We caught up with the legendary Di Tracey from NIWA to talk all things deep-water corals. How they live, what makes them different from their shallow water relatives, and how they are adapted to life in the deep dark ocean. Di's long career in deep-sea ecology is also intertwined with her extensive work in making the marine sciences a better place for women to work. She talks us through what it was like to begin her career offshore, often being the only woman on board, and how she helped change the industry for the better. In the news this week we have a few exciting new updates. We can indeed confirm that as of our last episode where we spoke about the vulnerability of subsea cables, there were multiple apparent attacks and cables were cut. We can only assume that hostile nations do indeed listen to the deep-sea podcast (thanks for subscribing!). Andrew is back from his stint offshore and he is chock-full of stories for us. Brand new dragonfish species, near-misses with box jellyfish and also some cookie-cutter sharks. It's all happening! While The FBR is now a sextet that includes guitarist Evan Opitz, keyboardist Brandon Mordecai, bassist C.J. Singer and former Goo Goo Dolls drummer Mike Malinin, it started with McConaha and Hunter performing as a duo. They met at an open-mike night in 2014 at what was then known as Puckett's Grocery and Restaurant in Leipers Fork, a small rural community 30 minutes southwest of Nashville popular with songwriters and musicians. It was during a period of time when McConaha had discovered the music of Leonard Cohen, who had lived in Leipers Fork himself in the late '60s and early '70s.The group takes its name from another song by Cohen, “Famous Blue Raincoat,” which he recorded in Nashville in September 1970, and that is what the duo began calling themselves after Cohen passed before later shortening it to “The FBR.”One might expect a group named after a Leonard Cohen song to be a folk act or maybe folk-rock, but that's not the case with The FBR. Decades ago, they would have been considered Southern rock, and that's still not a bad description of their music because it's essentially gospel-flavored blues rock with a little boogie on the side. The FBR may work some classic musical territory, but that's not to suggest they're retro. The music on Ghost has a timeless and authentic quality that transcends its roots and gives it a powerful relevance in the postmodern musical landscape. At the heart of The FBR's sound is McConaha's enchanting and soulful voice, which can go from a whisper to a roar. In what seems like a contradiction, her voice is both familiar and different. But despite her obvious vocal gifts, she didn't move to Nashville to be a singer.McConaha also counts Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams, Adele and Amy Winehouse among other vocalists who influenced her. Some have compared McConaha to Maria Muldaur of “Midnight at the Oasis” fame, and their voices do have a similar flowing and sensual quality. On Ghost, the power and allure of her voice is on full display.Work on the album began in 2019 with co-producer Matt Sepanic, and those sessions, which featured backing from studio musicians, yielded three songs — “Rain On,” “Still On The Run” and the album opener and first single, “Before I Drown.” Six other songs, including the next two singles — “Empty Room” and a mashup of a pair of traditional numbers “Hurricane”/“House of the Rising Sun,” which has become a showstopper in their live performances — were recorded with their band in June 2022. “Skies of Donegal Blue,” which features just McConaha and Hunter and provides a glimpse into what they sounded like as a duo, was cut in California in spring 2023 with producer Jim Scott, who also mixed the album.https://www.fbrmusic.com/https://www.instagram.com/thefbr_music/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/theFBRmusic/https://www.youtube.com/@thefbrband?app=desktopHost - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information - ftsunashville@gmail.com

“I spoke in a literal barn last year…So for all the speakers listening, you're never too big time. You're never on a big enough stage to go speak at a barn. It kind of humbles you a little.” In this week's episode, Brittany Richmond sits down with the CEO of Streamline Books, Alex Demczak, to chat about his speaking career and how Streamline Books is helping speakers level up their businesses. "When you make a jump of any kind in your career, imagine it like this. You're in one boat, right, and you're leaping to this other boat, and you need to make sure that your boats are aligned so that when you make that jump, there's not a huge splash in the water, right. You need to make sure you go from one boat to the other. And so my mentor, they told me, they said, look, your boats with corporate America and speaking are actually, they're so close that they're actually restricting each other. They're, like, causing friction."In this episode, Brittany and Alex dig into: When Alex realized he wanted to speak Alex's origins of working for free Going pro in your speaking The credibility a book brings to your speaking business Leaving corporate America to pursue speaking full-time Streamline books, what they do, and how they help people become authors How to leverage your book as a speaker Ideas to help you negotiate better speaking contracts with your book And more! Elizabeth opens up about her family's profound struggle when her brother, Ted, was diagnosed with rare blood disorder aplastic anemia. Their innocent childhood turned into a harsh reality as Ted spent eight years in a laminar air flow room at the National Institutes of Health. Elizabeth recounts their childhood inside the hospital, his illness, and the impact his sudden death had on each family member. In this episode, Elizabeth highlights Ted's positive attitude despite being unable to leave a hospital room or protective suit. Elizabeth also shares her journey to understand the grief she experienced at such a young hand. This discussion brings to light the often-overlooked impact of sibling loss, and the importance of recognizing and processing grief. Through the experiences of 77 siblings Elizabeth interviewed for her book, "The Empty Room: Understanding Sibling Loss”, she uncovers the common themes and understanding within this unique grief experience. We discuss the gradual shift in understanding from the dated idea of 'getting over' loss to the more complex concept of maintaining continuing bonds with the deceased. The conversation concludes with Elizabeth's reflections on her parents' reactions to her writing a book about her experience. You've probably never heard of the Empty Room Theory because I made it up to help me make sense of life when I was in high school. This is the theory that I have applied to myself and my life to give space for me to learn what I need to learn at my own pace regardless of other people's standards. It applies quite well to polyamory, as you perhaps can already tell. . I'd love for this to be collaborative so send me a message with your questions, comments and feedback! I'd love to hear from you! If you want to learn more about coaching with me, my classes, or the events I host, check out my website at www.elizabethanncunningham.com . Going back to the NES we get The Guardian Legend, a curiousity developed by Compile that is best described as Zelda plus Zanac. Originally released in 1988 for the NES, The Guardian Legend or "Guardic Gaiden" is the pseudo sequel to MSX game Guardic from 1986. While the developers insist there's no story links between the games, there's enough gameplay and music shared between the two that we decided to play a lot of Guardic music for comparison. The music was composed by two individuals: Masatomo Miyamoto and Takeshi Santo. Masatomo Miyamoto worked with Compile from around 1985-1990 and soonafter left the game industry. Takeshi Santo worked as a sound programmer at Compile from 1987-1989 and then went off to found Sting where he's spent most of his career in a producer capacity. A couple of tunes were the inspiration for cranking out another Sunday Morning mix. First is the lead-off track - A Sunday Kind of Love from Etta James. It's simply a great tune that I'm surprised I haven't used before. Next is an track from 1971 that I'd never heard of until a few weeks ago. I stumbled on an Instagram reel that talked about the gentle beauty of "Curry Rice" by Kenji Endo. I immediately fell in love with it and the rest of the album. That's where the mix started and from there it follows the usual formula - some jazz, some ambient, some folk - all flowing together in a sweet Sunday mix. Jordan is on the edge with her fiancé, when a stranger enters her world and slyly turns it upside down. Insistent on honing his social skills with someone who seems as kind as her, he leads them into an increasingly pointed debate about the tides of culture, love, and Jordan's own looming commitment. Developed from a conversation overhead in a coffee shop, Richard Gustin's SOMEONE LIKE ME is a socially awkward comedy about the intimate places a total stranger can unexpectedly take us. Family Theater was a dramatic anthology radio show which aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the United States from February 13, 1947, to September 11, 1957. The show was produced by Family Theater Productions, a film and radio studio extension of the Family Rosary Crusade founded by the Holy Cross Priest, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, to promote family prayer. The motto of these Holy Cross Family Ministries is, "The family that prays together, stays together." The program had no commercial sponsor, yet Father Peyton, CSC arranged for many of Hollywood's stars in film and radio at the time to appear. In its ten-year run, well-known actors, and actresses, including James Stewart, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Raymond Burr, Jane Wyatt, Charlton Heston, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors, appeared as announcers, narrators, or stars. A total of 540 episodes were produced. The program featured not only religious stories but half-hour adaptations of literary works such as A Tale of Two Cities, Moby-Dick and Don Quixote Listen to our radio station Old Time Radio https://link.radioking.com/otradio Listen to other Shows at My Classic Radio https://www.myclassicradio.net/ Podcast Service I Recommend https://redcircleinc.grsm.io/entertainmentradio7148 Remember that times have changed, and some shows might not reflect the standards of today's politically correct society. The election of Donald Trump and the siege of the US Capitol on Jan. 6 made clear the rising political power of the right in America, but this is not an isolated phenomenon—right-wing power is surging across the globe. From India, Brazil, and the Philippines, to Hungary and the US, we find right-wing political movements that are challenging the established order and that are fueled by anti-immigration mania, racism, patriarchy, historical nostalgia, as well as the destruction wrought by colonialism, the fall of Leninist states, and the failure of modern capitalism to meet the needs of masses of people. How are these manifestations of far-right politics similar to one another, where do they differ, and how do we fight against them?In this special series of The Marc Steiner Show, co-hosted by Marc Steiner and Bill Fletcher Jr., we will examine the rise of the right in the US and beyond, we will explore the different tendencies and motivations fueling today's surge in far-right politics, and we will engage with a range of critical voices who can help us understand how we got here and what we can do about it. In Episode Four of “Rise of the Right,” Marc and Bill are joined by Kristóf Szombati, Sadia Abbas, and Dimitri Lascaris to discuss the international dimensions and connections between far-right movements around the globe in the 21st century.Kristóf Szombati is a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany, and the author of The Revolt of the Provinces: Anti-Gypsyism and Right-Wing Politics in Hungary. Sadia Abbas is an associate professor of postcolonial studies in the Department of English at Rutgers University-Newark, where she is also the director of the Center for European Studies; she is the author of At Freedom's Limit: Islam and the Postcolonial Predicament and the novel The Empty Room. Dimitri Lascaris is a lawyer, journalist, and activist, and was a candidate in the last federal Green Party leadership race in Canada, finishing second with just over 10,000 votes. He is also a longtime contributor and current board member at The Real News.Tune in every Monday over the next month for new installments of this special series of The Marc Steiner Show on TRNN.Read the transcript of this podcast: Pre-Production: Dwayne Gladden, Stephen Frank, Kayla Rivara, Maximillian Alvarez, Jocelyn DombroskiStudio: Dwayne GladdenPost-Production: Stephen FrankHelp us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer:Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-mssSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-stGet The Marc Steiner Show updates: https://therealnews.com/up-pod-stLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
