Jenny Kassan, CEO of Opportunity Main Street, is proving that crowdfunding can be a powerful tool for revitalizing communities while offering investors a meaningful way to make a difference.Jenny is raising capital through a regulation crowdfunding campaign on SmallChange to renovate a historic building in Baltimore. This project, called Community Commons, will serve as both a hub for local businesses and a space for community-building activities. The first floor will feature a gathering space, coffee shop, and retail area, while the upper floors will house luxury furnished apartments for short-term rentals.Jenny explains her motivation: “I've believed for a while that it's really important to create a place-based ecosystem to grow this movement to move community capital into small business.” She has already raised $2.5 million for the project but is turning to crowdfunding to close the final gap. What makes this project stand out is its intentional focus on Baltimore. After hosting a women entrepreneurs' event in the city, Jenny fell in love with its historic charm and resilient spirit. “Baltimore is a beautiful, scrappy city,” she says. “There's a renaissance going on… it's a place where you can make a significant impact.”Jenny's choice of SmallChange as the crowdfunding platform is no accident. She highlights the portal's commitment to impact-focused real estate projects and its owner, Eve Picker: “She really cares about her clients… and the design of the page is absolutely beautiful.”By combining real estate with a community-driven mission, Jenny's project offers an opportunity for investors to see both financial returns and social impact. The short-term rental apartments are projected to generate strong revenue, while the first-floor activities will foster relationships, support local businesses, and teach community members how to invest locally. This isn't just about one building. Jenny hopes the Community Commons project will become a replicable model for other cities. “It's about creating a replicable model for community wealth building and supporting the local investing movement,” she says. With projects like these, Jenny is showing how crowdfunding can be a bridge between financial goals and community revitalization.Creating a thriving community takes more than goodwill—it requires vision, leadership, and resources. She explains, “I've learned so much about finance, securities law… and I feel like my superpower is bringing it down to a level of clarity for people.” Her passion stems from a desire to make the world of finance less opaque and intimidating, especially for those who lack traditional financial knowledge or access to resources.Illustrative Story:Jenny's superpower shone when she helped a worker co-op in Boston called CERO raise capital for a composting business. Comprised of highly disadvantaged individuals, the co-op needed funding for a truck but wanted to retain worker control. Jenny structured an offering of non-voting equity, allowing the workers to remain in charge while raising several hundred thousand dollars. This project exemplifies her ability to simplify financial tools for underserved communities, empowering them to achieve their goals.Actionable Tips to Develop the Superpower:Deepen Your Expertise: Invest time in learning the intricacies of your field, as Jenny did with finance.Practice Simplifying Concepts: Break down complex ideas into clear, relatable language to help others understand them.Empathize with Your Audience: Tailor your explanations to the needs and backgrounds of those you're helping.Stay Mission-Driven: Focus on using your knowledge to empower others and create meaningful change.By following Jenny's example and advice, you can make simplifying complex concepts a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. If you're ready to grow your market share the smart, sustainable way, this is the episode you can't afford to miss. Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners: Use buyer psychology: Understand what keeps your ideal customers up at night—even beyond what you sell — and craft marketing that speaks directly to their real problems. Stop chasing quick wins: Ditch short-term campaigns that burn cash and energy. Invest in long-term demand generation that keeps paying you back year after year. Get ahead of competitors early: Capture your audience before they're ready to buy, so when the time comes, you're already their favorite choice. Our hero crafts outstanding reviews following the experience of listening to our special guests. Are you the one we've been waiting for? Be genuinely helpful: Create content and tools that solve multiple pain points for your audience, not just those tied to your product. Trust builds loyalty. Empathize like crazy: Take time to imagine your buyers' hectic lives—step into their shoes. This will sharpen your messaging more than any funnel hack ever could. Build brand relationships, not transactions: Focus on becoming a trusted advisor. When people know, like, and trust you, selling becomes almost effortless. One action small business owners can take: According to Rai Hyde Cornell, one action small business owners can take is to pause for 5-10 minutes, truly step into their buyer's shoes, and empathize with what their Monday looks like—because understanding their world is the secret to crafting irresistible marketing. Cara and Rythea dig into how hypocritical they feel as parent advocates when they fall so short on their own commitment to staying loving. They have a good laugh and some deep process about how childhood wounds and unconscious aspects of self show up when they least expect it.They explore specific situations where they have worked hard to be different, but keep getting triggered into the same kind of reactivity. They brainstorm (and unravel) how the umbrella of non-coercive, collaborative philosophy keeps them grounded and afloat, even as they make constant mistakes.Cara comes clean about the bedtime triggers she faces with her daughter and how demoralizing her trauma responses make her feel. Rythea exposes how a mother-wound with her own parent blocks her from allowing her child to individuate gracefully. Together, they ask: how does the parenting approach we use bring us back to our hearts and playful connection with our children through the long haul? What does it mean to model a process for our children when we're the ones unraveling? Key Topics:Feeling powerless or threatened by your child's autonomyParenting from your wounded partsModeling emotional processing in real timeCreating micro-moments of connection, even in ruptureHonoring your child's developing identity and valuesThe tension between belief and behavior in parentingIf you've ever wondered, Am I even doing this right?, this episode is for you. Cara and Rythea remind us that real parenting is messy—and that returning to connection, especially after rupture, is where the healing begins.Tools & Resources Mentioned:The EARS acronym: Empathize, Affirm, Relate, Support/SolveParts Work (Internal Family Systems)Co-counseling techniques for emotional processingBook a parent mentor session with Rythea: https://rythea.com/for-parents Check out Cara's Relationship Toolkit: https://www.caratedstonetherapy.com/your-relationship-toolkit Support YKDS https://buymeacoffee.com/yourkidsdontsuck It's important and essential to put our voices (Rythea and Cara) in a context. In this episode, Dr. Mara Einstein joins host Dr. Bradley Block to explore how brand cults have infiltrated every aspect of our lives, including healthcare.Einstein explains how companies and even online influencers use cult tactics like love bombing, social proof, and identity reinforcement to manipulate vulnerable people. She connects these strategies to the rise of anti-vaccine movements, medical misinformation, and even lifestyle brands masquerading as communities. Physicians, she warns, may think they're immune but they aren't.Together, they explore how digital echo chambers, charismatic figures, and algorithmic reinforcement have created dangerous in-groups and out-groups, eroding trust in science. But there's hope. Dr. Einstein offers practical advice for parents, physicians, and content creators to inoculate themselves and others against manipulation.Three Actionable Takeaways:Recognize the Tactics – Be aware of cult-like methods like love bombing, identity reinforcement, and emotional manipulation in marketing—and teach your patients (and kids) to do the same. Empathize and Stay Open – Don't alienate patients caught in misinformation. Listening without judgment preserves the physician-patient relationship and creates a path for future trust. Build Your Own Community – Science needs better marketing. Create communities around evidence-based care where people feel seen, heard, and empowered. In the third and final episode of a podcast series on medical misinformation, nurse practitioners (NPs) Drs. Ruth Carrico and Paula Tucker delve into actionable strategies for building patient trust and addressing misinformation in health care. They emphasize communication frameworks like the 3 Es (Engage, Empathize, Educate), the 5 As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange), motivational interviewing and shared decision-making. These approaches are designed to shift conversations from correction to connection, promoting understanding, empathy and collaboration between providers and patients. Both hosts stress the importance of humility, patient-centered care and adapting communication strategies to different health care settings. Ultimately, they call on nurse practitioners to incorporate these techniques to foster trust and informed choices in an era dominated by misinformation. Tool link: MedMyths_3.pdf

Kevin and Julie tackle the common struggles members face when answering questions about their faith—either over-explaining ("verbal vomit") or retreating in discomfort. They introduce a new approach built around three key skills: Answer, Ask, and Empathize. Instead of focusing solely on giving the "perfect" answer, they emphasize connection—helping others feel seen, heard, and valued.Through practical exercises, they explore how to break old habits by answering briefly, asking thoughtful follow-up questions, and practicing empathy. They also discuss the deeper gospel principle of covenantal connection—strengthening our relationship with God by strengthening relationships with others. The result? More confident, meaningful, and Christlike gospel conversations._______________Subscribe for more free YouTube Tips: https://www.youtube.com/teachingrestored?sub_confirmation=1Find all episodes: https://teachingrestoredAsk a question for us to answer on our podcast: https://teachingrestored.com/contact-us/Join us on:✅ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/teachingrestored✅ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teachingrestored✅ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@teachingrestored

This Podcast Is Episode 613, And It's About Strategies To Boost Construction Team Morale During Transitions Change is inevitable in any business, but it's rarely easy—especially when managing morale. Significant transitions can leave employees feeling uncertain, disengaged, or even overwhelmed, whether you're restructuring your team, implementing new processes, or pivoting your business strategy. As a small business owner, you probably ask yourself, "How can I guide my team through this while maintaining morale?" You're in the right place. Maintaining high morale within a construction team is crucial for productivity and overall job satisfaction. The construction industry can be challenging, with tight deadlines, physical demands, and unpredictable work environments. Supporting and motivating your team is essential. Here are 10 practical tips to help you support your team and maintain a positive, productive environment during significant change. 1. Communicate early and often Transparency is your best friend during periods of change. Keep your team informed by sharing information as early as possible—and don't stop there. Regular updates can help reduce uncertainty and foster trust. Whether it's an email, a town hall, or a one-on-one conversation, aim to explain: What's changing Why the change is happening How it will affect your team For example, a quarterly team meeting can serve as a platform to address concerns and answer questions. Employees who feel informed are less likely to speculate or fear the worst. 2. Listen to employee concerns Change impacts everyone differently; your team will have questions, concerns, or frustrations. Show them you care by creating space for open dialogue. Encourage team members to: Express their feelings Share feedback on how the change is unfolding Using anonymous surveys or hosting informal "ask me anything" sessions can make employees feel heard. Remember, acknowledging their concerns—even if you don't have all the answers right away—goes a long way in building trust. 3. Share the vision People resist change when they don't understand its purpose. Focus on the bigger picture to paint a clear picture of what lies ahead. How will this change benefit the team, the company, or even your customers in the long run? For instance, if you're restructuring to expand into new markets, explain how it can lead to more innovation or exciting growth opportunities. A shared vision provides clarity and motivates the team to move forward together. 4. Empathize with your team Here's the truth—change can be stressful. Acknowledge and validate your employees' emotions. Begin meetings or updates with statements like, "I understand this may feel overwhelming" or "We know this transition has been tough." By showing empathy, you foster a sense of unity and make it clear that you're working through this change together. 5. Keep leadership visible Your team looks to you for guidance, especially during times of uncertainty. Be present, approachable, and ready to answer questions. Your availability demonstrates that you're actively engaged in the process, whether walking the office floor, participating in virtual check-ins, or sending team-wide updates. Remember, leadership isn't just about decision-making—it's also about reassurance. 6. Lead with optimism Have you ever noticed how a leader's tone sets the mood for an entire team? Stay positive and relay your belief in the team's ability to overcome challenges. It's important to remain genuine—optimism doesn't mean brushing off difficulties but tackling them confidently. When you frame challenges as opportunities for growth, the team will be more likely to rise to the occasion. 7. Invest in employee growth When change disrupts workflows, employees may feel stagnant or uneasy about their roles. Counteract this by providing opportunities for professional development. Whether you offer access to online courses, arrange workshops, or encourage skill-building projects, you'll remind your team that their growth still matters to the business. For example, consider introducing workshops to train employees on new systems during a technological shift. This will boost morale and build confidence. 8. Recognize achievements Sometimes, it's the small wins that keep morale alive. Take the time to acknowledge individuals or teams adapting well or going above and beyond during transitions. Whether it's a shoutout during a meeting or a personal note of appreciation, celebrating achievements can maintain momentum. Pro tip: Pair recognition with tangible rewards, like an extra day of paid time off or coffee vouchers. It doesn't have to be expensive—just thoughtful. 9. Maintain consistent messaging Mixed messages can create unnecessary confusion. Ensure that updates regarding the change are consistent across the board. Empower managers and team leads with the right talking points so everyone is on the same page. Providing an FAQ document or a central update hub is a great way to keep communication aligned and accessible for your team. 10. Foster a sense of community Change is easier to manage when employees feel like they're part of a supportive team. Arrange team-building activities, whether virtual or in-person, during this period. From group lunches to brainstorming sessions, these activities can help strengthen relationships and build camaraderie. Create opportunities for employees to collaborate on problem-solving tasks related to the change. This will give them a feeling of ownership and reinforce the idea that "we're in this together." Adaptability in Construction Bookkeeping The construction industry frequently shifts due to regulatory changes, economic fluctuations, and technological advancements. An adaptable bookkeeping approach allows businesses to adjust to these changes swiftly, ensuring compliance and minimizing disruptions in financial reporting. By leveraging technology, enhancing communication, and being responsive to industry changes, construction businesses can maintain strong financial health and become more resilient in a competitive market. An adaptable bookkeeping approach ultimately leads to better decision-making, increased profitability, and a solid foundation for growth. Keep moving forward Change can be difficult, but it also holds the potential to bring growth, innovation, and opportunity. By empathizing with your team, communicating clearly, and keeping morale front of mind, you can ensure that the transition strengthens your business instead of destabilizing it. An adaptable construction business owner can navigate unexpected challenges—such as changes in market demand or supply chain disruptions—more effectively. This resilience helps the business weather economic fluctuations and positions it to seize new opportunities. On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, I have an enlightening discussion with Matt Lyles, a distinguished keynote speaker and customer experience consultant. We explore the profound impact of simplicity in creating memorable customer experiences. With an extensive background in brand management at FedEx, Matt shares valuable insights into how he has transformed customer experiences across diverse sectors, emphasizing his passion for fostering loyalty through simplicity. We dive deep into the concept that while creating a magical customer experience is critical, it must rest upon a foundation of simplicity. Matt argues that in our increasingly complex world, consumers gravitate to brands that can streamline their experiences. It's not about making things easier for businesses; it's about understanding and alleviating customers' hurdles in their brand interactions. Matt highlights research findings that showcase the benefits of prioritizing simplicity, revealing that 64% of consumers are willing to pay more for a straightforward experience, and 78% are likely to recommend brands that deliver such experiences. A compelling part of our conversation centers around the practical application of simplicity in customer interactions. Matt introduces the "SIMPLE" acronym, breaking it down into six actionable behaviours: Simple Never Stops, Innovate to Stay Ahead, Minimize Barriers, Prune it Back, Lose the Jargon, and Empathize with Your Customer. Each behaviour emphasizes continuously refining processes to meet customer needs while minimizing friction throughout the customer journey. Moreover, we must tackle customer experience misconceptions, particularly reducing customer service to a mere function rather than recognizing it as an integral part of the overall brand interaction. This mischaracterization leads to missed opportunities for fostering deeper relationships with customers. Matt reinforces that customer-centricity means placing the customer at the heart of every decision, fundamentally altering how companies view their operations. The simple act of listening and empathizing is easy in principle but very hard mentally and emotionally to do.” “Any new skill feels weird when you first start doing it, but the more you do it, the easier it gets.” “Great relationships aren't just about compromise; they're about finding the best of both ideas and working together.” “In an argument, it's just me against her, and I want to win, or she wants to win. Branding/marketing isn't going to do anything for your org…if you can't fund it in the first place. Unfortunately, justifying the investment in this work — both money AND capacity — for social impact orgs doesn't come as easily as it might for other sectors. And right now everyone is still stuck in the “do more with less” mentality. Here's how to make a solid case for the investment — whether you're pitching your leadership team, funders, or anyone else that needs buy-in to make it work:1. Empathize with decision-makersUnderstand what decision makers value and what other priorities they are focused on. This work isn't the only thing on their mind just because it's important to you. 2. Connect work to financial healthYou have to make a case that this work is not just “feel good” work, but actually leads to better financial sustainability for the org. (Teaser: we're going deep into this in next week's episode).3. Tie initiatives to impactConnect the dots between this investment and how it will actually create impact for your community and help you reach your mission more quickly/effectively.4. De-risk the investmentUse a pilot project or a phased approach to de-risk the investment and lower the barrier to entry.5. Propose what to deprioritizeRealize that saying yes to this most likely means saying no to other valid projects. Come prepared with which projects you would recommend deprioritizing.6. Present your project teamThink through WHO on your team will be involved and how this will affect their capacity. This shows that you understand this will take time and energy and make for easier planning. In today's episode of Designing Tomorrow, Jonathan and I dive deep into each of these points, plus we cover:→ How to appeal to personal motivations→ Making concrete connections to growth or cost savings→ Aligning with your mission and impact→ Balancing risk and reward→Managing internal resources effectivelyBut here's the kicker: There's one unexpected benefit of investing in branding/marketing that most people overlook. It's so powerful, it might just be the most important (but rarely discussed) return on your investment.Curious? You'll have to listen to find out. Whether you're a CEO/ED, marketing lead, or passionate team member trying to drive change, this episode has some road-tested ideas to help you make your case.Resources:Episode inspired by an article in - TheySaid's 2.0 Magazine Want to Scale Your Social Impact? Guest Debbie Foster is the CEO at Affinity Consulting, delivering custom business strategies for legal teams. With her years of experience helping law firms modernize, she explains how to overcome internal roadblocks to modernizing. How do you recognize, and overcome, bottlenecks? It comes down to how people, often unintentionally, keep firms from using the best available new tech. It can be anyone from top leadership to support staff. But by understanding the reluctance, you can win them over. The world of legal tech offers myriad solutions. True they cost money, but that should never hold a firm back if there's ROI on the other side. Modernizing a firm's tech can advance a firm, create efficiencies, and push the firm ahead. But fear of the unknown, and not understanding an investment's potential, even if that's coming from a single person, can hold everyone else back. Hear how “absolute clarity” and a laser focus on what your firm needs can clear those roadblocks by helping you explain exactly what solutions you need and how new tech will meet them. Fear and uncertainty are the enemy. Start with defining a problem, then educate everyone on how a solution will solve it and how you will support the adoption process. Questions or ideas about solo and small practices? Drop us a line at NewSolo@legaltalknetwork.com Topics: Today's legal tech is getting better, and faster, and more efficient. But sometimes a “this is how we've always done it” from a single person – anyone from a managing partner to a bookkeeper – can block upgrades. Don't let one person hold back an entire firm. Hear how it all starts with identifying a problem and helping your “human roadblocks” overcome their concerns and get onboard. Fear of the unknown is real. Fear of looking “dumb” in the face of a tech upgrade is real. Fear of overspending is real. Empathize. Educate. Elevate. Help those resisters feel empowered and excited. Imperfection is part of life and I guess my concern is that AI-generated content, which smooths and perfects a version of reality to precisely what you want and forces you or makes you feel pressured to represent yourself in this absolutely perfect way, fundamentally gives you no room for error and kind of detaches you from the reality of growth and life and and how people work. Empathize with other people. Everyone has their challenges. Things don't always have to be exactly perfect to how you want them to be or how other people want them to be. And that involves having some humility about yourself as a messy creature, as we all are. I hope that's retained, but I do see this kind of move towards this sort of smoothed and shaped reality that AI is enabling, potentially creating more of a disconnect between that imperfect, messy, but also quite beautiful world.
