In this episode, the FAQ is: What should I tell people who think I can't travel solo?   Today's Destination is Lake Como, Italy Today's Misstep: Sometimes, you don't love your roommates when you share a room. Here's why.   Travel Advice: Don't buy another timeshare. If you have one, it's really hard to sell it.   FAQ: What do I tell people who think I can't travel solo?   Answer: Ask them why not. Then listen. Then, address each one of their questions or comments if you like. No one says you need permission to travel solo, but it would be good to tell them you are prepared, have planned for things to go wrong, and have taken this travel step by step to be more likely to be successful. They may be telling you in a way that they will miss you, but don't know how to say that. They could also be jealous. They could wish they could make this trip themselves. So there could be a lot of hidden reasons why they have those opinions.   Today's destination: Lake Como, Italy   Lake Como, Italy, was a quick train ride from Milan, Italy.    On a hot day, about 95 degrees Fahrenheit,  I ventured to Lake Como to cool down. I went there solo for three days, staying in town at a hostel that cost me $150 a night for a “middle bunk.” That was the most I paid for sleeping anywhere around the world. It did have a bathroom with a shower en suite.   It may have been less costly if I had booked earlier than two weeks in advance. Either way, here's some advice if you are heading there.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Como_San_Giovanni_railway_station It was a quick walk from the Como San Giovanni train station to town, so you don't need a car here if you stay in the main city. The lake is a breathtaking view from wherever you are, so the water keeps you cool, even on a boat. Buy the all-day ferry ticket if you can stay for the day. https://lakecomotravel.com/boat-tours-ferry-lake-como/   https://www.navigazionelaghi.it/en/services/disabled-accessibility-and-prm/   Explore all the ferries and see the episode's notes with links, including accessibility information for getting on and off the ferries.   I spent a full day on a ferry tour of the lake, three hours north at its furthest and with more than one tributary. I got off at Menagio and found a paid private club called Lido, but I did not swim there. A few minutes later, while swimming, I met a family from Denmark at a free swim spot. I walked the town and had Nutella-flavored gelato. I then Took the ferry to Varenna. I walked the town.  Then, I took another Ferry to Bellagio. The line was too long to get back on, so I stayed on board. I got off later in the smaller town. I met another couple from Germany. They agreed it was dreadfully Hot. I Stopped to cool my feet in the sea at Argegno—thunderstorms in the morning. I walked to town.  https://www.explorelakecomo.com/go/lido-di-argegno#google_vignette I met a girl from Munich and her friend, who took a photo of me with some flowers.  Bellagio has the George Clooney Villa. Most of the music I hear is American pop, not Italian.   https://www.bellagiolakecomo.com/en/bellagio-lake-como-italy/poi-points-of-interest/public-transport-lake-como The lake is carved into a deep canyon. The hills above can be accessed by a special bus-like on rails called a Funicular.   I took the Lake Como Funicular at 7:15 pm, running every 30 minutes until midnight. I highly recommend you do this and give yourself time at the top. The views are stunning, and there's a lot to explore here. It connects Como to the town of Brunate. The trip lasts 7 minutes and reaches the maximum allowed gradient of 55%—so that's steep! The fee is small: only 3 euros (4 dollars) for a single journey and 5,50 euros (7 dollars) for a round trip. So worth it!   When leaving the train station, notice the sculpture of large human hands nearby. It is beautiful and dedicated to disabled service people. One hand is healthy,, and one is wounded.    https://www.explorelakecomo.com/go/monumento-ai-caduti-per-servizio Also, I noticed a little bit of Las Vegas here; inside the train station, there was mini gambling, like in Las Vegas. Ironically, there's a hotel in Las Vegas that's called Bellagio.  Today's Misstep: You don't always love your roommates, right?    I went to bed by 9 p.m. because I was busy the next day. My bed was the middle bunk, and there were 5 in the room booked. At 11 p.m., two girls arrived and talked in street voices. I asked them to quiet down nicely. They did not. I finally did get to sleep, but it was rude of them to wake others with their voices and chatter. Would you agree?   Today's Travel Advice: Don't buy a timeshare or another one. If you have one, it's tough to sell it.   We got conned when we tried to sell our timeshare, so don't let that happen to you. We only lost a few thousand dollars, but it was a warning. These are not easy to sell. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If they ask you for money, walk away. Timeshares are hard to navigate to use your week. I spend hours each year trying to book one, and it's very frustrating.   I want to bring meaning to your future travels. Sign up for the Dr. Travelbest newsletter. Funicular is an adjective that means hauled by a rope or cable.  Coming from the mid 17th century, funicular takes its root from the Latin word funis (FOO nis) which means rope. Our word of the day is often used to describe means of transportation that feature rope. Here's an example: I love skiing, but I get a little uneasy when riding those chair lifts up the mountain. Something about funicular travel causes me to worry about what might happen if the cable should snap.

We are continuing our Italian series with this Episode 59 all about the famous and bucket list city in Italy, Como on the beautiful shore of Lake Como. Hear about our amazing accommodation.  Everything about it was fabulous, the views, the room, the shower, the bed, the breakfast, the staff – it just had one small problem that was an issue for us and we tell you all about it. Come with us as we wander around the city of Como around the lake and what happened as we lined up to get on the Funicular (remember, I don't like heights at all). I didn't know if I should be happy or sad. We share the most beautiful restaurants on the lake to have lunch – or hire a beach chair and umbrella and have a swim. Listen as we tell you about how chaotic the ferry system is and how we found a way to enjoy the lake and the most stunning and exquisite place away from all the crowds and you probably haven't even heard of it. Next we explore the old city area and piazzas of Como itself and tell you what happened to completely embarrass me while sitting at a lovely restaurant right in front of the huge Cathedral. Listen to the end to hear about another ferry ride on Lake Como to a small village where we did a live broadcast and the fancy restaurant that we were hoping to have lunch in, but ended up with sandwiches and beer. Make sure you click the link to see all the pictures – you really won't want to miss them.  One of my friends who has been following our travels for years said that they are the best and most beautiful he has seen – so check them out. www.beachtravelwine.com/podcast/59/como  And if you know someone planning a trip to Italy, please share our podcast series all about Italy by sharing the link to our Italy page on our website at www.beachtravelwine.com/italy If you would like to see all our other podcasts, pictures and blog posts then go to our website at www.beachtravelwine.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leanne-mccabe/message

What do ski lifts mean to skiers? Ask Doppelmayr USA President Katharina Schmitz and she'll tell you ‘freedom.' In this episode, Last Chair host Tom Kelly chats with the leader of Utah-based Doppelmayr USA to explore the evolution of ski lifts and future trends, not only at resorts but as a vital form of mountain and urban transportation.Doppelmayr, which is located not far from the Salt Lake City International Airport, has a  history in Utah going back to the 1970s. One of its predecessor companies, CTEC, was founded here. It later morphed into Garaventa, and then became a part of Doppelmayr, an Austrian company with a history going back 125 years.Utah is a big customer itself for the company, with over a hundred lifts in the state including the Garaventa-built Snowbird tram, now over 50 years old and still one of the most iconic ski lifts in the world, and the brand new Outlaw Express high-speed quad that opened at Sundance just before Christmas. In many ways, the future of lift technology is already here with products like Doppelmayr's revamped detachable technology in D Line lifts, which are soon to come to Utah. Its tri-cable 3S line, featuring high-capacity, long span gondolas like the new Eiger Express in Switzerland and Whistler/Blackcomb's Peak-to-Peak Gondola, may also find a future home in the state.A passionate skier herself, Katharina Schmitz grew up in Austria, coming to America with her engineering degree to forge a career in the automotive and aerospace industries, before landing in Utah with Doppelmayr in 2018. It's a fascinating interview that will explain current trends in uphill transportation, showcase future innovations and even take a look into the proposed Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola and how Doppelmayr's triple-cable 3S technology could make a difference. She even speaks to the growing importance of WiFi in lift cabins!Katharina, tell us more about Doppelmayr. We have around 3,500 employees, about half of those are in Austria. The rest of us are scattered throughout the world across about 50 subsidiaries. The North American market is a key part of that, so we typically make up around 15 percent of the group's revenue. In really strong years, we were a little bit closer to 20 percent, so we certainly have a lot of attention from our group's headquarters and a lot of support as well. Why is Utah a good home for a lift company like Doppelmayr?Having a very business friendly environment certainly is a factor now. In addition to that, having several world class resorts right in our backyard is a real benefit. It helps us to collaborate closely with customers, not only in Utah but throughout the West. And having a Delta hub here is really nice to visit the rest of our customers throughout the country. The history of aerial tramways in Utah goes back to hauling mining ore in the 1800s. How has the ski lift industry evolved from there?Yes, it started with material transport and Doppelmayr still has a material transportation segment. But the core market for us is transporting people. We have seen a lot of evolution from the first surface lift in, I think, 1937, that Doppelmayr built in Austria that really started the company's ropeway business. Then if you look from there and how fast we came to the first detachable around 1970 or so, the innovation since then has just been mind blowing. So I think it shifted the profile as to what ropeways are used for or used in.What's the coolest lift installation you've seen in the world?I have a personal favorite, which is the Stoosbahn in Switzerland. It is a funicular and it has barrel shaped compartments that have a leveling floor, so you always stay horizontal. It's the steepest funicular in the world and it is the most unique ride. You're going up this amazing incline and then through a little tunnel and come out on the other side. It serves as public transport, as well as access to a smaller ski area that's car free. And it's just an amazing installation, a really fun ride.In your three seasons here in Utah, any favorite runs?Well, I'm not as territorial since I'm not native Utahn, but I very much enjoy long runs. So I really do like some of the runs up at Snowbasin - off John Paul or Needles - that are just making for a good, long, fast run. With the move from quads to six-packs and now to eight-packs, what are the important factors?Terrain and alignment certainly are the big and obvious ones. Capacity is a big topic these days. And how many people do you want to move up the mountain per hour comes with a few different factors. Lift speed is certainly a factor, but also how many carriers you have. While you typically want to go up the mountain fast, you want to be really slow going through the terminal. And so we found in recent years that having slower carriers through the stations, having longer loading intervals really helps with keeping the lift running and not having any misloads as you go. So that also explains a little bit why you see lifts with, let's say, six or eight seater chairs so you can have fewer carriers, longer loading intervals, and you would still have the same capacity doing that.So it's not just about capacity? In essence, with an eight seater, you would have a higher ultimate capacity. Most resorts don't strive for that per se. They're trying to get a certain capacity. And then it's a question on how comfortable you want your load interval to be. Increasing the load interval is a big topic and it ties into one of these other big factors - the level of skier that really uses that lift. If you have a beginner area, that's maybe one of the most important factors is making sure you can load them. If you have, you know, an alignment where it's all expert skiers, that's probably not your concern and you'll be looking for some other factors.I recall the old Park City gondola being a great place to develop a relationship with a 25-minute ride. Modern lift technology has really changed that, hasn't it? Yes, you have to be efficient about your conversation, that's for sure.

But in only a few minutes, everybody aboard the funicular in Kaprun, Austria, would be fighting to survive inside a tunnel so close to help, yet so very far away.

Funicular in Vietnam reimagined by Raymond Delepierre. "The traces of chaos and historical invasions will make Vietnam a country of hope. "I used the funicular steel cable as a metaphor, as a memory, as a timeline to extract the sounds leaking into it. "I used the original sound by only listening as an autonomous body. From this point of view, I created a dense and musical sound disorganization. "For this I used field-recording sound sequences captured in Asia, low-fi sound treatments, I created minimalist contributions of musical continuo, processed voices, and resonances of steel cables captured in an urban environment in Europe. "These dramatic, resonant, urban mixes ultimately lead to an future aeration of an urban environment." Part of the Future Cities project.

Gingerline are widely considered as trailblazers of the immersive dining world. Their secret East London locations are text to guests just 60 minutes before the start of the event. Once you’re inside you are taken into a different world, with immersive actors, and unique food-led concepts; from multi-dimensional universes, to hot air balloon rides and even being the stars of your very own game show. Suz talks about the ethos behind a Gingerline event, second careering in catering, and recaps some of the last ten years of success and setbacks along the way. 00:50 A review on last week’s guest – Journey to the Underworld at Pedley Street Station 02:42 Ben talking about how there could be too much ‘immersive’ in London 03:53 Gingerline 04:41 Suz joins in the studio and talks about going into business from a punters viewpoint 06:35 Going into food as a second career 07:30 Their first supper club 08:50 Why Gingerline 11:04 What is Gingerline 12:30 Chambers of Flavour 13:25 The Grand Expedition 14:45 The core team 15:34 Successes 17:05 The biggest hurdles along the way 18:00 Giving up the day job 19:00 The commercial realities of finding a space 20:00 The Hoxton site 21:18 Where is the brand heading 22:50 Costs, times and dates 24:20 The competitive dining game show 27:56 Social Media 29:45 Ben talks about his run in with the police 31:55 Bens recap on the conversation with Suz 33:00 From event space to outer Space   34:45 Ben begging for reviews 35:38 This weeks thank you’s and social media You can reach the guests here  Instagram: _Gingerline Twitter: @Gingerline @ChambersOfFlav Facebook: @Gingerline @TheChambersOfFlavour Mentions Funicular Productions Lolilpop Punch Drunk Hop King Give us a Shout on #ShoutAbout Instagram:          ShoutAboutLondon Facebook:            ShoutAboutLDN Twitter:                ShoutAboutLDN Please subscribe and rate us! As with all great London success stories, Craig Wilkinson came up with the idea for Funicular Production in a Hoxton Boozer at the book end of 2017. After deciding to repurpose a set previously used for a high-profile brand event, they set about raising funds, finding a location, creating a story, hiring actors (and a whole lot more) at a breakneck pace. Whizz forward under two years and they’ve had four different shows, incredible reviews and menus designed by several Master Chef finalists.
