On Friday, November 7, 1969, Sister Cathy Cesnik, a Roman Catholic Nun and English teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, MD, left her apartment to run errands and was never seen alive again. Two months later, Sister Cathy's body was discovered by two hunters in a wooded clearing approximately 5 miles from her home. Her killer was never found and her case remains unsolved today, but not for a lack of trying. Local police, Sister Cathy's family and former students have spend the last 5 decades trying to solve a mystery that goes much, much deeper than what we see on the surface. So deep, in fact, that you will not believe why so many people close to her believe Sister Cathy was murdered as part of a major coverup that is both scandalous and eye-opening.If you have any information on Cathy Cesnik's case, please contact the Baltimore City Homicide Unit through Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7-LOCKUP. That's 866-756-2587. A $2K reward for information leading to an arrest is still active in this case. After you listen to this episode, be sure to check out the 6-part Netflix series, The Keepers, that goes way beyond any of Deb and Shelbey's questions we have in this case, and see if you can help solve the case.Listen to new episodes every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts! Today on Midday, a discussion about the the Child Victims Act becomes law in Maryland. The law allows survivors of sexual assault in Maryland the right to sue the Archdiocese of Baltimore and others for civil damages, regardless of when the abuse they suffered took place. Prior to the law, survivors of sexual assault were ruled out of suing alleged abusers once they were past age 38. What will be the effect of the new law that wipes out the statute of limitations in these cases? The Child Victims Act of 2023 goes into effect on October 1st. Two survivors of abuse by employees of the Archdiocese of Baltimore join us to discuss the new law and its consequences. Teresa Lancaster was a student at Archbishop Keough High School in the early 1970s. Her story is one of the central elements of the Netflix documentary, The Keepers. We are also joined by Tony Petrowski, who was abused as a middle school student at St. Elizabeth's Catholic School on Lakewood Avenue in Baltimore. Jonathan Schochor is the Founding Partner and Chairman with Schochor, Staton, Goldberg and Cardea, a law firm in Baltimore that represents victims of sexual assault. RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1 800-656-4673) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country. If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, help is available.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

It's a True Crime week, murderinos! In this week's episode, we're on the case of not one but two infamous True Crime stories that have been famously featured in recent streaming series. Lauren starts us off with the case of Candy Montgomery - a woman who murdered her friend, Betty Gore, with an axe in Wylie, TX on Friday the 13th, 1980. You can see the dramatized version of this story in Hulu's "Candy" starring Jessica Biel as Candy AND yet another upcoming series based on the same story - HBO Max "Love and Death" starring Elizabeth Olsen as Candy.Later in the episode, Felicia covers the unsolved murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik in Baltimore, Maryland. Her body was discovered on January 3, 1970 under mysterious circumstances. While the case has never been officially solved or suspects charged,  the nun may have known too much about the sexual assault on students by two priests at Archbishop Keough High School where she worked. The True Crime tale was explored in Netflix's critically acclaimed "The Keepers" docuseries in 2017.

In this special episode Kate asks a medium to discuss the unsolved mysteries of the murders of Sister Cathy Cesnik and Kathleen Peterson, the kidnapping of Sherri Papini, and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Catherine Anne "Cathy" Cesnik SSND was a Catholic religious sister who taught English and drama at the formerly all-girls Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, Maryland. On November 7, 1969, Cesnik disappeared. Her body was discovered on January 3, 1970, near a garbage dump in the Baltimore suburb of Lansdowne. Her murder remains unsolved. In December 2001, novelist Michael Peterson called to report that his wife Kathleen had fallen down a set of stairs and died. The authorities disbelieved Peterson's story that Kathleen had fallen while drunk and concluded instead that Peterson had bludgeoned her to death, most likely with a fireplace poker which was discovered missing from the house. Peterson was soon charged with murder and the Netflix series The Staircase details the ensuing case from the point of view of Peterson and his defense team, led by David Rudolf. Sherri Papini claims she was abducted on November 2, 2016, while out jogging a mile from her home in Redding, California. Papini was 34 years old at the time. She was found three weeks later on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, having been freed by her captors at 4:30 that morning still wearing restraint. The case garnered major media attention, but no arrests have been made and authorities report the investigation is ongoing as of April, 2017Madeleine McCann disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal, sparking what one newspaper called “the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history”. This episode continues difficult subject matter around childhood sexual abuse. *Check out part one for more information* In episode one of this two part series, we spoke with several people to follow up on the continued work toward justice since Netflix’s Oscar nominated docuseries The Keepers premiered in May of 2017. The series explored the murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik in 1969, a 26 year old nun and teacher, but there was much more to the story than that. A ring of abuse was taking place at Archbishop Keough High School with a man named Father Joseph Maskell at the center, and his victims are now assumed to be in the hundreds. It is likely he hand a hand in Sister Cathy's murder, who was trying to expose the abuse. Teresa Lancaster and Alan Horn join us again for part two, where explore the what it’s like to be working voluntarily on a case like this. We will also be speaking with a woman who chose to go by the name Piper, one of the volunteers who works along side Alan and Teresa making calls to victims and piecing together clues. Piper wished to remain anonymous, as powerful institutions are involved in what Alan, Teresa, Piper, and many others believe to be a serious cover-up. Piper shares with us what it is like to work on a case like this.
