Yes! You are in! In for another treat! James from Compton is back! This time with his bride, Sister Cathy the Versed. My nicknames for both of them by the way. Terms of endearment. What good can come out of Nazereth? A LOT! Compton? A LOT! An unlikely meeting in an unlikely gated community. Reads like many Bible stories. Least likely doing amazing things. A story of hope for any of you feeling imprisoned (literally or figuratively). Does this broken planet need more Hope or hopelessness? More Hope coming up, here you go...
This we discuss the unsolved murder of Sister Catherine Cesnik, covered in the widely renowned Netflix documentary, the Keepers. Sister Cathy disappeared in November 1969 while running some errands, with her body discovered 3 months later. On Friday, November 7, 1969, Sister Cathy Cesnik, a Roman Catholic Nun and English teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, MD, left her apartment to run errands and was never seen alive again. Two months later, Sister Cathy's body was discovered by two hunters in a wooded clearing approximately 5 miles from her home. Her killer was never found and her case remains unsolved today, but not for a lack of trying. Local police, Sister Cathy's family and former students have spend the last 5 decades trying to solve a mystery that goes much, much deeper than what we see on the surface. So deep, in fact, that you will not believe why so many people close to her believe Sister Cathy was murdered as part of a major coverup that is both scandalous and eye-opening.If you have any information on Cathy Cesnik's case, please contact the Baltimore City Homicide Unit through Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7-LOCKUP. That's 866-756-2587. A $2K reward for information leading to an arrest is still active in this case. After you listen to this episode, be sure to check out the 6-part Netflix series, The Keepers, that goes way beyond any of Deb and Shelbey's questions we have in this case, and see if you can help solve the case.Listen to new episodes every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts! This story takes place in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. It is about a nun named Sister Cathy, a priest called Father Maskell, and a web of dark energy that I was called to fix. If those names sound familiar, they are the same Sister Cathy and Father Maskell the Netflix docuseries ‘The Keepers' was about. Sister Cathy, a nun who is no longer with us, called me to this project to help with her unsolved business: bringing justice to the many vulnerable believers who were hurt by Maskell, and more importantly, to show me the web of evil that his actions had created. She knew that what he had done was not isolated and she understood that the souls of the people he had hurt were in some cases, still entangled in it and thus, were not free. She also knew that what he was doing went much beyond Archbishop Keough to cover a lot of this city and parts of the county. As it turns out, Father Maskell was a busy guy who had been in 7 different parish based locations spread all around the city (and briefly Wexford, Ireland) before he was defrocked. His tenure with the Church spanned almost 30 years. As I worked this project, I realized what he was described in The Keepers, it appears, went on for many years. These actions left a dark web on the city. It was this dark web of influence that Sister Cathy was contacting me about. Over the course of three years, she, my husband, and I worked together to untangle it. In this instalment of psychopomp stories, I introduce Joseph Maskell and detail the web of fear and evil he created. In my opinion, Joseph Maskell was acting under the influence of a demonic entity. Every single person he hurt, every feeling of fear he evoked, helped to power it. Lucky me, I got to go hunting. For my members community: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/esotericearth
Gemma and Survivor Donna are in Maryland today (12/7/2022) to speak at a press conference along with SNAP and their attorneys. They are filing with the court in regards to the Attorney General's attempt to release the 456-page report on child sexual abuse by clergy in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. They want to make their voice heard asking for full disclosure of the report with no redactions. The Maryland Attorney General investigation into the sexual abuse of children by clergy in the Archdiocese of Baltimore (AOB) has concluded. The 456-page report details the sexual abuse of more than 600 victims at the hands of 158 Catholic Priests that were part of the AOB. Attorney General Brian Frosh has turned his report over to the courts and has asked the court to release it to the public saying his investigation uncovered many attempts of coverups of priests abusing children by those in the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Baltimore said they want full transparency and will not fight the release of the report, however they are paying for the legal fees of an "anonymous" group of people who are trying to prevent the report's release. Survivors Jean and Teresa have filed with the court to have their voices heard previously. Find us online. Support the show by joining our Black Label by becoming a Patron on Patreon. Roar with Shari. . . All Things Justice for Women & Survivors
In this episode, we discuss an unsolved murder. Haunting, horrible, upsetting and deeply troubling documentary: The Keepers on Netflix. Gemma Hoskins, Emmy Nominated for The Keepers, is still hunting down who killed beloved teacher and nun Sister Cathy Cesnik. Every now and again you stumble across a documentary that leaves you speechless, of murder, sexual violence, and hidden secrets, that plants an expression of disbelief across your face that lasts long after you've finished watching it. One, that leaves you no choice but to be heavily invested in strangers' lives, and leaves you still trying to find resolve to unanswered questions in the days that follow. A documentary that makes you question what the hell is wrong with the world. The Keepers is one of those documentaries. Our guest today, is Gemma Hoskins, one of the students of Sister Cathy, and at the center of the documentary, The Keepers. Horrible, gut wrenching and deeply haunting. But it's an important and incredibly brave story nonetheless. The Keepers tells the story of Sister Catherine Cesnik, a 26-year-old nun living in Baltimore who was abducted and murdered back in the 1960s. The case was never solved, but was linked to a horrific history of sexual abuse by a chaplain called Father Joseph Maskell. The documentary itself is incredibly interesting, but the subject matter is difficult and descriptions of what happened are upsetting and rather detailed, so I'd probably make sure you're aware of what you're getting yourself into before you dive into your next true crime binge.Meet Gemma Hoskins who shares with us today, her personal, relentless pursuit of the unsolved murder of her favorite high school teacher, Sister Cathy Cesnick and what they uncovered, which was more horrible than even murder.Listeners, Please Note: Shari Karney, the host of Roar with Shari. . . This week on Dark As Hell, I’m telling you a story about a good Catholic schoolgirl -- one so good, she became a nun as a young woman. But this isn’t just the story of Sister Cathy Cesnik; this story also involves many other good Catholic schoolgirls; most who knew and loved Sister Cathy as her students at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, Maryland. This isn’t just a case about a ruthless, senseless murder — it’s about the extensive cover up of this murder, and the 50 years that many Baltimore organizations have spent turning their gaze heavenward when asked why, oh, why have you forsaken Sister Cathy Cesnik? The full hearing is around two hours long, so we will release them one after another. During this first part the panel, consisting of survivors and experts, will speak to the committee members. There are 3 panels in this first episode, with Jean speaking in the last one. After each panel speaks, the committee members ask questions prior to the next panel. Next week’s episode will include Teresa Lancaster. This podcast is sponsored by Best Fiends Visit us online at itsfoulplay.comYou can support our show at Patreon.com/itsfoulplayFollow and interact with us:Twitter - @thefoulplaypodInstagram - @itsfoulplaypodJoin in on the discussion on our private facebook group:Foul Play - Crime Podcast Discussion Group

During last week’s conversation with MKUltra Survivor we discussed briefly some of the documents the CIA released that touched slightly on their psychological testing done under MKUltra. What I am about to read to you is a redacted CIA document from 1951, two children were used in the experiment and the document explains both are young girls. Although this document does not talk about sexual testing, please be advised that what you are about to hear may be triggering if you are a survivor. This document is proof of one type of testing the CIA did on children involving being in a trance and ensuring their subjects had complete amnesia. *** TRIGGER WARNING ***Visit us online at itsfoulplay.comYou can support our show at Patreon.com/itsfoulplayFollow and interact with us:Twitter - @thefoulplaypodInstagram - @itsfoulplaypodJoin in on the discussion on our private facebook group:Foul Play - Crime Podcast Discussion Group

Around the same time Sister Cathy went missing in 1969, Father Maskell started looking for a confidential secretary. Student Lil Hughes (Knipp) agreed to fill this position. Some episode corrections: Lil has 7 siblings, not 8. Her dad was in the service but was home for Christmas. When Lil mentioned that those who work in a private school has access to a lot of information, she would like to clarify that files are kept confidential HOWEVER she believes Fr Maskell bullied the nuns at the school and acted as though he was the person in charge. This provided him with access to private and confidential information on students.Join Gemma Hoskins and Shane Waters as they continue the conversation that Netflix's Docu-Series "The Keepers" shared with the world in 2017. In 2013, Abbie Schaub and classmate Gemma Hoskins, along with friend and advocate Alan Horn, began investigating the unsolved 1969 murder of Sister Cathrine Cesnik. Sister Cathy was Abbie and Gemma's former teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, Maryland. What began as curiosity into the murder of a beloved teacher ended up becoming a years-long investigation that uncovered another unsolved murder and scores of survivors who were sexually abused by principal Father Joseph Maskell from Keough High. Abbie shares with us what how a simple investigation turned into the Netflix documentary series known as The Keepers. Marta On The Move Podcast- Hosted by Marta Napoleone Mazzoni
Gemma Hoskins From "The Keepers" on Netflix This is the lead up to Halloween in which I feature different themes revolving around this holiday. Stories about facing your fears, spooky stories, psychics, magic, murder, and more have been featured, and I could not wait to release this episode. There was once a suggestion on Netflix given to me by a friend, that suggestion was a documentary called “The Keepers”. I had no clue what the show was about, but trusted the source and one weekend while I was ill decided to binge it. I was instantly hooked. Where do I even start with this? How do I tell you to watch this show without giving too much away? The story is disturbing, but it is an important one to hear. It revolves around a cold case murder that took place 50 years ago in Baltimore, Maryland. It unfolds to reveal a parallel storyline about female students who are now grown up women that attended the Catholic school named Keough and triggered memories of their time at school. Secrets, murder, rape, and more come to light in this documentary. You won’t believe what you hear, and who was all involved. It is important especially when so many priests and the Arch Diocese are being currently investigated in many cities across the country, and I believe that "The Keepers" had a huge hand in triggering a lot of this. Remember, this was before Spotlight, and I can not imagine the guts it took for these women and men to come forward, face their pasts, and confront their abusers. It is truly horrifying, but it has prompted even some friends that have had similar experiences to speak openly about them, and that is important. I could not wait to release this for the lead up to Halloween especially because Sister Cathy Cesnick. IS a Pittsburgh native. She is buried in her hometown of Sharpsburg. Gemma Hoskins is one of the leading investigators who researched this story. I was honored she took the time to answer my questions about the case, and was very candid about where we are currently in this investigation. Her and friend Abbie Schaub were very brave historians and students of Cathy. They have even been featured on "The View" to talk about the show. Gemma and Abbie spring boarded this investigation, and hopefully with the help of others who have information we will have Justice for Sister Cathy and all the victims of abuse out in the world. Check out the Justice for Cathy Cesnik and Joyce Malecki Facebook page, and follow along in the events that are unfolding. Topics discussed- - How the investigation started and lead to Gemma and Abbie - How the Netflix show picked up the information and formulated the show. - Who is Brother Bob? Marta and Gemma discuss. - Why the police are finally now more involved in working to solve the case. - Where YOU can take your information if you have leads. - Does Gemma feel as though we are any closer to solving the case? - Were the other nuns involved? - Will there be a season 2 of The Keepers? Sister Cathy Cesnik. Father Maskell. Courtesy of Netflix Gemma and Abbie on The View The lead up to Halloween ends with our live podcast in Pittsburgh. This episode continues difficult subject matter around childhood sexual abuse. *Check out part one for more information* In episode one of this two part series, we spoke with several people to follow up on the continued work toward justice since Netflix’s Oscar nominated docuseries The Keepers premiered in May of 2017. The series explored the murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik in 1969, a 26 year old nun and teacher, but there was much more to the story than that. A ring of abuse was taking place at Archbishop Keough High School with a man named Father Joseph Maskell at the center, and his victims are now assumed to be in the hundreds. It is likely he hand a hand in Sister Cathy's murder, who was trying to expose the abuse. Teresa Lancaster and Alan Horn join us again for part two, where explore the what it’s like to be working voluntarily on a case like this. We will also be speaking with a woman who chose to go by the name Piper, one of the volunteers who works along side Alan and Teresa making calls to victims and piecing together clues. Piper wished to remain anonymous, as powerful institutions are involved in what Alan, Teresa, Piper, and many others believe to be a serious cover-up. Piper shares with us what it is like to work on a case like this. Like I said before, we are exploring what happens when the cameras go off, when the awards season is over, but justice has not yet been served. Here is the official Facebook page to meet others and get involved: https://www.facebook.com/groups/454252571596239/ Please get in touch with Teresa and Alan via email if you have any information around the death of Sister Cathy, Joyce Malecki, or the abuse perpetrated by Father Joseph Maskell, or if you would like to volunteer to help find justice. This episode continues difficult subject matter around childhood sexual abuse. *Part two coming January 23* The Keepers, a 7-part, Oscar nominated docuseries from Netflix, premiered in May of 2017, and existed on its surface as an investigation into the 1969 murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a 26-year-old nun and teacher at Arch Bishop Keough HS in Baltimore. But it was obvious right away that the murder of Sister Cathy wasn’t the only story that needed to be told. The series also helped to give a mainstream voice to several sexual abuse victims of Father Joseph Maskell, who was a counselor at the high school who died in 2001 and likely had a role in Sister Cathy’s murder, as it is believed that she was threatening to expose the profound abuse that was occurring to high school students at the hands of Maskell and other powerful community members, abuse that was covered up by the same powerful institutions. In the first part of this two part series, I am joined by Teresa Lancaster, who you will remember from the Keepers. She is one of the two women who first spoke out about the abuse she suffered at the hands of Maskell, and continues to work toward justice for Maskell’s victims, over 100 of which have come forward. Along with Jean Wehner, known then as Jane Doe, Teresa became known in 1994 as ‘Jane Roe,’ but, after horrific court proceedings, the Maryland Court of Appeals refused to allow the case to go to trial because the statue of limitations had passed. Nonetheless, that courageous act sparked the events that would go on to form The Keepers, and would allow a community to join together to fight for a long overdue justice, both for Sister Cathy, and for the victims of abuse at Keough and beyond. Teresa has since become a lawyer. Alan Horn, who was also featured in the Keepers documentary, is an amateur investigator who has voluntarily played a very helpful role in the path toward justice through his individual research. We are going to hear more about him, and also more from in the next episode. Both Teresa and Alan came to be associated with these cases in very different ways, but now both work toward the same goals. We will also be speaking with a woman named Dr. Pamela Pine, an expert in childhood sexual abuse, who will help us understand this abuse as a public health crisis. Thank you for listening to this very important episode. You can find more about Stop the Silence here: http://www.naasca.org/StopTheSilence/bio-PamelaPine.htm Behind True Crime is sponsored by Hunt A Killer, the monthly murder mystery subscription box service. My non-carnal life partner Tara Ariano comes on TBP for a look at Netflix's The Keepers. Does it work as a true-crime tale? Does it need to? And will we ever learn who killed Sister Cathy? Later, we make a markedly less depressing return to Tara's childhood with Love & Hate, a Canadian miniseries about the stalking and murder of JoAnn Thatcher by her scumbag ex-husband Colin. Imagine your favorite high school teacher. What were they like? What was it about them that made you want to pay attention in class. Or if you couldn’t do that, what was it about them that made them your favorite? Mine was a Psychology teacher in my senior year. He was very easy to talk to. He made himself available to you and met you were you were. He pushed me to take on challenges. I was new at the school and trying out for the basketball team. He made me, a very shy, straight A nerd, who knew no one, the captain of the basketball conditioning club. I’m still grateful for that attempt by him to help me see the leadership skills I possessed but largely ignored. He stood up for me and I trusted him immensely. This story is about a teacher just like that. Who was well loved. She was described as a real life version of Maria from The Sound of Music. Who Stands to Gain? The Complex Web of Archdiocesan Bankruptcies and Sister Cathy's Unsolved Murder. After funneling an extensive amount of resources into fighting against survivors in Maryland to preserve the statute of limitations, the Archdiocese of Baltimore has now opened a new legal front—filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.Astoundingly, the archdiocese seems willing to spend millions more in legal and court fees to essentially carve out their own type of statute of limitations, a privilege that bankruptcy can afford them. This unsettling move is not unique to Baltimore; it's part of a wider pattern with 30 other archdioceses across the United States following suit.As this unfolds, Shane Waters and Gemma Hoskins reunite in Episode 87 of Foul Play: Crime Series to continue their dedicated investigation into who killed Sister Cathy. Kicking off Season 2 back in September 2018, we've now arrived at a critical juncture that compels us to ask: Who had the most to gain from Sister Cathy's tragic death? In this episode, listeners will be guided through the labyrinthine world of bankruptcy filings, legal strategies, and the disturbing lengths to which these religious institutions are willing to go to avoid accountability. The timing of these bankruptcy filings is not coincidental; it has the potential to thwart ongoing investigations and silence survivors indefinitely. Shane and Gemma dig deep into the financial intricacies and legal loopholes that these archdioceses are exploiting. Alongside this, they also scrutinize the possible connections between Sister Cathy's unsolved murder and the powerful entities now using bankruptcy as a shield. As financial power plays become a focal point, this episode doesn't just scratch the surface; it delves deep into the complex machinations that could be hiding the truth behind Sister Cathy's murder. Don't miss this compelling episode that seeks to unravel the complex tapestry of legal and moral questions surrounding one of the most puzzling cold cases in Maryland.
