On 09/20/1988, 19-year-old Tara Leigh Calico left her home in Belen, New Mexico, for her daily bike ride along Highway 47. She never returned. fWotD Episode 3147: Littlehampton libels Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Tuesday, 16 December 2025, is Littlehampton libels.The Littlehampton libels were a series of letters sent to numerous residents of Littlehampton, in southern England, over a three-year period between 1920 and 1923. The letters, which contained obscenities and false accusations, were written by Edith Swan, a thirty-year-old laundress; she tried to incriminate her neighbour, Rose Gooding, a thirty-year-old married woman. Swan and Gooding had once been friends, but after Swan made a false report to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children accusing Gooding of maltreating one of her sister's children, the letters started arriving. Many of them were signed as if from Gooding. Swan brought a private prosecution against Gooding for libel; in December 1920 Gooding was found guilty and imprisoned for two weeks. On her release the letters started again, and Swan brought a second private prosecution against Gooding. In February 1921 Gooding was again found guilty and imprisoned for twelve months.While Gooding was in prison, two notebooks were found in Littlehampton. They contained further obscenities and falsehoods and were in the same handwriting as the letters. As a result, Gooding's case came to the attention of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Archibald Bodkin, who thought that there had been a miscarriage of justice. An investigation by Scotland Yard cleared Gooding of involvement in sending the letters and she was released from prison. When the letters started up again, the focus of police attention moved to Swan and she was put under surveillance. She was seen to drop a libellous letter and prosecuted in December 1921. Despite the evidence against her, the judge intervened in the prosecution's questioning and the case collapsed.In early 1922 the letters began arriving again. By October the police and detectives from the General Post Office (GPO) were involved, all targeting Swan. GPO detectives caught Swan sending another libellous letter in June 1923. She was arrested, found guilty and imprisoned for a year. In 2023 a film about the events, Wicked Little Letters, was released; it stars Olivia Colman as Swan and Jessie Buckley as Gooding. The Only Path to This Understanding: Deep Listening Most people think they're excellent listeners, yet often go through the motions without truly engaging. Being on the receiving end when someone is thinking about a million other things feels infuriating and dismissive. The Critical Truth About Listening in Difficult Conversations No one has ever listened themselves out of a job or a relationship. This simple truth carries profound implications for women leaders navigating difficult conversations at work. Deep listening doesn't diminish respect, authority, or influence‚ it amplifies all three. The 5 Levels of Listening for Difficult Conversations Levels 1-3: Surface Listening (Where Most Leaders Get Stuck) Level 1: Distracted Listening Nodding while mentally planning your rebuttal or thinking about other priorities. The other person immediately senses your lack of genuine engagement, trust erodes, resistance increases, and resolution becomes impossible. Level 2: Rebuttal Listening Waiting for them to finish so you can explain why they're wrong. You're not actually processing their perspective, just defending your own. Both parties dig into entrenched positions and the conversation becomes adversarial. Level 3: Logic-Only Listening Focusing solely on facts, data, and logical arguments while ignoring emotions. When your team member asks for a raise, the real issue might be feeling undervalued compared to peers, concern about supporting their family, fear of falling behind in their career, desire for recognition of contributions, or worry that you don't see their potential. Why This Transforms Difficult Conversations at Work You might think they're completely wrong and seeing things from a misguided viewpoint. That doesn't matter at this point. When you accurately reflect someone's perspective, one of two responses occurs: Response A: "Yes! You've hit the nail on the head. That's exactly it." They feel seen and heard, defensive walls come down, and real conversation can begin. Response B: "No, no, no, that's not it. It's actually this..." You're getting better data about what's really going on, moving closer to the real issue. Either way, you're gaining valuable information while the other person feels understood. Derrière cette nouvelle de 120 pages se cache toute la vie de son auteur : ancien ambulancier de la Croix-Rouge grièvement blessé en 1918, reporter de guerre, témoin des horreurs des deux conflits mondiaux et de la guerre d'Espagne, Hemingway transforme ses traumatismes en littérature au style dépouillé, direct, presque “télégraphique”. De L'Adieu aux armes à Pour qui sonne le glas, il impose une écriture neuve, sans fioritures, nourrie de son expérience du danger, de la douleur et du courage. Le 2 juillet 2008, Ingrid Betancourt foule enfin le tarmac de Bogota, libre, après plus de six années de captivité aux mains des FARC dans la jungle colombienne. Fille de diplomates, formée à Sciences Po Paris, elle était devenue une figure majeure de la vie politique colombienne, candidate à la présidentielle et symbole d'une Colombie nouvelle, décidée à lutter contre la corruption et la guerre. En février 2002, en pleine campagne, elle est enlevée sur une route contrôlée par la guérilla, avec sa directrice de campagne Clara Rojas, et conduite au cœur de l'Amazonie. Là, enchaînée, affamée, malade, déplacée de camp en camp, elle affronte la chaleur étouffante, les marches forcées, les maladies, la peur permanente et le manque déchirant de ses enfants. En France, où elle possède aussi la nationalité, sa famille et ses soutiens en font une cause internationale, poussant les gouvernements français et colombien à tenter des négociations et des opérations secrètes. En 2008, une taupe infiltrée au sein des FARC permet de monter une spectaculaire opération : sous couvert d'une fausse mission humanitaire, des soldats colombiens exfiltrent Ingrid et d'autres otages par hélicoptère. Sa libération devient un événement mondial et l'un des épisodes les plus marquants du conflit colombien. Quelques années plus tard, un accord de paix est signé avec les FARC, tandis que demeure, autour de la figure d'Ingrid Betancourt, un mélange d'admiration, de controverses et de questions sur le prix humain de cette guerre sans fin. Grâce à un garde forestier, les recherches convergent vers une zone boisée où la voiture du fugitif est retrouvée abandonnée. Dans la forêt, une course-poursuite s'engage entre les arbres avant que les gendarmes ne parviennent à le maîtriser au sol. En découvrant Demoulin au-dessus de lui, Dutroux laisse éclater sa surprise, comme pris à son propre piège. Cette cavale éclair, vite terminée mais lourdement symbolique, ridiculise les autorités tout en scellant définitivement la perspective du procès du siècle. In der Dienstwohnung über dem Foyer leben der Manager Dudley Henry Hort und seine Frau Maisie. An diesem Morgen aber endet die gewohnte Stille abrupt: Als Maisie das Wohnzimmer betritt, sieht sie einen fremden jungen Mann, der mit einem Beil auf ihren Ehemann einschlägt. Dudley wird tödlich verletzt, Maisie selbst überlebt schwer gezeichnet. Sermon Summary In this message, Coleton walks deeply into one of Jesus' sharpest public confrontations with religious leaders. Drawing from Mark 12:35–40, he exposes three behaviors of the teachers of the law that still plague the church today — behaviors that cause people to lose trust, walk away, or become disgusted with religion altogether. But instead of letting these failings push us from Jesus, Coleton argues they should push us closer to Him, because Jesus Himself condemns these very abuses more clearly, more passionately, and more fiercely than we ever could. What follows is Coleton's three-point framework, each grounded in Scripture, history, and modern examples, ultimately leading us toward a posture of repentance, discernment, and deeper intimacy with Jesus. 1. Hypocritical Lifestyle — Appearing Righteous (vv. 38, 40) Scripture: “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect… and for a show make lengthy prayers.” — Mark 12:38, 40 Historical Note (Mark Strauss): “Teachers of the law wore long white linen robes… These garments imitated the robes worn by priests and so ‘signified' religious devotion.” Jesus' critique:   They projected holiness to gain admiration, honor, and spiritual credibility, but inside they were spiritually dead. Coleton highlights Jesus' words from Matthew where He calls them “whitewashed tombs” — clean and impressive on the outside, but hiding decay beneath. He describes Bryn Gilet's painting of the Pharisee and tax collector, showing a beautifully posed, self-righteous Pharisee whose “worship” is nothing more than polished emptiness. Modern Example: Coleton shares his disillusionment with a once-admired pastor whose hidden lifestyle contradicted everything he preached. The fallout devastated a church, wounded countless people, and embodied this exact hypocrisy Jesus condemned. Main Idea: Hypocrisy in spiritual leaders makes people question everything — the church, the message, even Jesus Himself.   But Jesus is not soft on hypocrisy. He hates it.   He exposes it, condemns it, and warns His followers to stay alert to it. 2. Using God to Get Better Treatment & Better Stuff (vv. 38–39) Scripture: “They like to… be greeted with respect… and have the most important seats… and the places of honor at banquets.” — Mark 12:38–39 Commentary (David Guzik): “They taught that teachers were to be respected almost as much as God… The greatest act someone could do was to give money to a teacher… Of course, it was the teachers themselves who taught this.” What's happening here? These leaders used Scripture as a tool to extract honor, wealth, and privilege for themselves. They weren't shepherds — they were spiritual opportunists. Likewise:  Know the real Jesus deeply, so when someone distorts Him, you can see it — and not walk away from Him because of someone else's misrepresentation. L'histoire de Clabecq, c'est celle d'une région sacrifiée, où les hauts-fourneaux s'éteignent un à un. Derrière les grilles, 1 800 familles voient leur avenir s'effondrer. Les tensions montent, les affrontements éclatent, et la justice s'en mêle. Quelques années plus tard, les Forges ferment définitivement, scellant la fin d'une ère industrielle. Aujourd'hui encore, les anciens ouvriers se battent pour obtenir justice. Clabecq reste le symbole d'un combat social historique, celui d'hommes et de femmes refusant de plier face à l'injustice économique. In 2011, newly surfaced emails suggest that Prince Andrew attempted to use a Metropolitan Police protection officer—assigned to him as part of his royal security detail—to dig up damaging information on Virginia Giuffre, the woman who accused him of sexual abuse linked to Jeffrey Epstein. The email reportedly contained Giuffre's date of birth and U.S. Social Security number and alleged she had a criminal record in the United States. It was sent to a royal press aide, implying coordination to discredit Giuffre before the now-infamous photograph of Andrew with her surfaced. There is no evidence that the officer followed through on the request, and Giuffre's family has confirmed she never had a criminal record. The revelation underscores Andrew's desperation at the time to undermine his accuser rather than face the allegations head-on, revealing a cynical attempt to weaponize his royal privilege and the resources of law enforcement against a survivor.The Metropolitan Police have since announced they are “actively looking into” the claims, which have triggered widespread public disgust and renewed scrutiny over Andrew's use of taxpayer-funded protection. I am happy to share a recent conversation I had with Dr. William Walsh about his new book, “The Essence of Bipolar Disorder,” where he lays out his discovery into the cause of Bipolar Disorder, a condition with fluctuating high and low mood states that has baffled researchers and psychiatrists.Dr. Walsh, the president of the non-profit Walsh Research Institute, is an internationally recognized expert in the field of nutritional medicine.
