Antibodies or not, the book has been a #1 bestseller in both the UK and US. And we can look forward to an A24 and Brightstar TV adaptation soon. On London, the story is murkier. London Falling begins on November 29, 2019, when nineteen-year-old Zac Brettler falls to his death from a luxury apartment above the Thames. Every parent's ultimate nightmare. As it happens, I've known Zac's dad, Matthew, for many years. But what appeared to be a tragic accident or a suicide turned out to be something far more sinister — a story of double lives, dirty money, a dishonest businessman named Akbar Shamji, and a terrifyingly violent gangster known as Indian Dave. Lurking behind the Brettler death is what Keefe presents as the greatest deceit of all — London's cruel descent into what he sees as the moneyed miasma of post-Thatcherite neo-liberalism. He had even fabricated bank statements showing a personal account holding $1 million. Under this guise, he became entangled with Akbar Shamji, a slippery businessman, and a man known as Indian Dave, a violent extortionist. Keefe's reporting suggests Zac jumped to escape from one of these men. Scotland Yard's passivity in investigating the case is, in Keefe's word, bizarre. •       London as a Twenty-Four-Hour Laundromat for Dirty Money: Keefe's portrait of London is the book's macro argument: a global city that has been hollowed out by decades of financial deregulation, whose financial sector is stacked with professional facilitators eager to help protect or conceal a dubious fortune, where posh mansions and private nightclubs serve as the visible surface of a hidden economy of criminal money. Zac Brettler was not rich. He was a boy from a comfortably off family who became fixated on the glitzy, mercenary, aspirational culture embodied by foreign billionaires who had bought mansions and football clubs in his city. London, in Keefe's telling, did this to him. •       The Brettlers' Consent: A Long Haul With the Family: Keefe had written 15,000 words for The New Yorker when he knew there was a book. He went to Matthew and Rochelle Brettler and their surviving son Joe and told them: I will only do this with your blessing. They read the finished piece, talked amongst themselves, and came back with a yes. Keefe's method: he is an open book; he invites sources to read his previous work. It took him an LSE graduate who became one of the most trusted journalists in the world to persuade a devastated family to trust him with their son's story. They made the right decision. •       Narrative as Delivery Device: Keefe's Method: Keefe on why he writes the way he writes: everyone has a phone in their pocket making claims on their attention. Narrative — true stories about real people, told with enough seductive propulsive energy — remains the most powerful way to convey information, to make someone who would not otherwise read nonfiction want to keep turning pages. He is looking, always, for inherently dramatic stories. London Falling is that: a whodunit, a parental love story, a portrait of a corrupted city, and a thriller, all in one book. The New York Times described the whole book as one of the best of 2026 so far. •       The Television Adaptation: A24, Brightstar, and the Lessons of Say Nothing: A24 and Brightstar are producing the television adaptation of London Falling. Five production companies had to audition for the Brettlers over Zoom. The family is involved. Keefe knows from Say Nothing — which took five years from book to screen and won awards as an FX series — that this cannot go on autopilot. The aim: something sophisticated, sensitive, and just to the family's story. Maurane fut l'une des plus grandes voix de la chanson francophone. Née à Bruxelles en 1960, elle se passionne très jeune pour la musique et développe une voix grave, puissante et immédiatement reconnaissable. Après des débuts difficiles, sa carrière décolle grâce à Starmania puis à des chansons devenues cultes comme “Toutes les mamas” ou “Sur un prélude de Bach”. Artiste libre, entière et profondément généreuse, Maurane marque aussi le public par son humour, son franc-parler et ses nombreux engagements humanitaires. Mais à partir de 2015, de graves problèmes de voix l'éloignent brutalement de la scène. Après deux années de silence et de combat médical, elle fait un retour bouleversant lors d'un hommage à Jacques Brel à Bruxelles en mai 2018. Quelques heures plus tard, la chanteuse est retrouvée morte chez elle à seulement 57 ans. Une disparition soudaine qui bouleverse la Belgique et le monde de la musique, laissant derrière elle une œuvre immense et une émotion intacte. When the crooks and the coppers join forces, London's criminal underworld is in very confused hands. For Episode 199, Reel Britannia slips into the sharply dressed, cheerfully crooked world of The Wrong Arm of the Law, a 1963 British crime comedy in which the nation's criminals discover that even dishonesty was better organised in the old days. Peter Sellers stars as Pearly Gates, a suave London gang boss who divides his time between running a fashion house and supervising a criminal organisation with the efficiency of a suburban business. His employees may be thieves, but they enjoy paid holidays, luncheon vouchers and a surprisingly enlightened approach to staff welfare. Crime, it seems, was never so civilised. Trouble arrives when a gang of Australian crooks begins impersonating police officers and helping themselves to the proceeds of other people's robberies. This is regarded as extremely poor form. With both Scotland Yard and the London underworld irritated, Pearly finds himself entering into an unusual alliance with Inspector "Nosey" Parker, played with glorious bluster by Lionel Jeffries. Directed by Cliff Owen and written by a team that includes Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, the film surrounds Sellers with a marvellous collection of familiar British faces. Bernard Cribbins brings nervous energy to Pearly's reluctant associate O'Toole, while John Le Mesurier appears with the beautifully weary air of a man who has already filled in far too many forms. The Wrong Arm of the Law is a breezy caper filled with bungling crooks, pompous policemen, double-crosses and a reassuring amount of London location work. It belongs to that wonderful strain of British comedy in which authority is treated with suspicion, crime is conducted by committee, and nobody appears capable of organising anything without first stopping for tea. En 1908, la riche héritière écossaise Marion Gilchrist est retrouvée assassinée dans son appartement de Glasgow. Très vite, la police accuse Oscar Slater, un immigré juif allemand au passé sulfureux. Pourtant, les preuves sont fragiles, contradictoires et parfois même falsifiées. Condamné à mort puis envoyé au terrible pénitencier de Peterhead, Slater clame son innocence pendant près de vingt ans. Le vol MH370 de la Malaysia Airlines, disparu le 8 mars 2014 entre Kuala Lumpur et Pékin, reste le plus grand mystère de l'aviation moderne. Peu après son décollage, l'avion cesse toute communication et disparaît des radars au-dessus de la mer de Chine. À bord se trouvaient 239 personnes de plusieurs nationalités, dont une famille française. Les recherches internationales n'ont jamais permis de retrouver l'épave complète du Boeing 777. Très vite, les enquêteurs soupçonnent un détournement volontaire du pilote Zaharie Ahmad Shah. D'autres théories évoquent un acte terroriste, une défaillance technique ou même une intervention militaire. Des débris retrouvés dans l'océan Indien confirment néanmoins la chute de l'appareil. Les analyses satellites montrent que l'avion aurait continué à voler plusieurs heures avant de s'abîmer en mer. Malgré plusieurs enquêtes et campagnes de recherche, aucune explication définitive n'a été prouvée. Plus de dix ans après les faits, le MH370 demeure une énigme mondiale et une douleur immense pour les familles des victimes. Mikis Theodorakis est l'un des plus grands compositeurs grecs du XXe siècle, mondialement connu pour la musique de Zorba le Grec. Très jeune, il s'engage dans la résistance contre l'occupation nazie pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Après la guerre, il subit la répression de la guerre civile grecque et connaît la prison, la torture et les camps de détention. Malgré les violences, il continue de composer et fait de la musique une arme politique. Exilé à Paris dans les années 1950, il devient une figure internationale de la culture grecque. Ses chansons engagées dérangent le pouvoir conservateur puis la dictature des colonels installée en 1967. Interdit de diffusion, traqué et emprisonné, Théodorakis devient un symbole mondial de résistance. Soutenu par de nombreux artistes et intellectuels, il est finalement libéré et contraint à l'exil. Son combat pour la démocratie marque profondément l'histoire contemporaine de la Grèce. Jusqu'à sa mort en 2021, il restera l'incarnation d'un artiste engagé au service de la liberté. Shane Waters and Gemma Hoskins sit down together for the first time in over a year for a wide-ranging conversation about the unsolved 1969 murder of Sister Catherine Ann Cesnik in Baltimore, Maryland. Known to millions through the Netflix documentary The Keepers, Gemma has spent more than a decade investigating what happened to Sister Cathy, the young School Sister of Notre Dame who taught English and drama at Archbishop Keough High School. She was found dead two months after her disappearance. This episode is a Q&A, recorded live with questions submitted by listeners through the show's Facebook community.The Investigation: Timeline Questions and New DoubtsListeners asked about the timeline of the night Sister Cathy Cesnik disappeared on November 7, 1969. Father Gerard Koob, who was in a relationship with Sister Cathy, claims he called the police at 11:30 PM after arriving at her apartment. The police report says the call came at 1:30 AM, a two-hour gap that remains unexplained. Koob says he and Father Peter McKeon found Cathy's car around 3:30 AM during a walk, but the police report credits McKeon alone with the discovery.Gemma corrects a long-standing detail from The Keepers: the car was not found directly across the street from Cathy's apartment at Carriage House. It was actually found one court up the street, on Carriage Court, around a curve and out of direct line of sight from Lantern Court. She also confirms that the image of Sister Cathy's car shown in The Keepers was digitally placed into the scene by producer Jessica Hargrave as a visual aid. The steering wheel appears on the wrong side because the original police impound photo was flipped to match the camera angle.Shane and Gemma discuss the suspicious letter Father Koob claims Cathy wrote to him, a handwritten love letter dated 12:30 AM on the Monday before she disappeared. The letter was found in the morgue notes rather than the detective's case file. Shane points out this means it was likely turned over after Cathy's body was found in January 1970, not when she first went missing. A profiler formerly with Scotland Yard analyzed the letter's content and concluded it was not written by Sister Cathy. Koob did not pass his second polygraph examination.They also examine a separate letter Cathy wrote to her sister Marilyn, postmarked after the disappearance, which was admitted into evidence with the Baltimore County Police but has since gone missing. Shane raises the question of whether Father Koob could have written the letter to Marilyn as well, noting the parallels to the other letter and the movie ticket alibi.New Evidence: The Mary Statue at St. Clement'sGemma shares a story that has not been widely reported. Approximately two years ago, Eva Nelson, a publicly identified survivor of Father Joseph Maskell's abuse, told investigators she remembered watching Maskell bury something in the backyard of the St. Clement's rectory in Lansdowne. Police obtained permission from the current property owner and brought in ground-penetrating sonar equipment. Detective Josh Battaglia, the current investigator on Sister Cathy Cesnik's case, was present at the dig.After two visits and multiple excavations, they found a broken statue of the Virgin Mary buried beneath a large bush that had once been small when Eva was a child. Eva recognized the statue immediately. A nun at St. Clement's had given it to her for protection, telling her, "Mary will always protect you." Father Maskell found the statue, broke it in front of Eva, and forced her to watch him bury it. In 2011, newly surfaced emails suggest that Prince Andrew attempted to use a Metropolitan Police protection officer—assigned to him as part of his royal security detail—to dig up damaging information on Virginia Giuffre, the woman who accused him of sexual abuse linked to Jeffrey Epstein. The email reportedly contained Giuffre's date of birth and U.S. Social Security number and alleged she had a criminal record in the United States. It was sent to a royal press aide, implying coordination to discredit Giuffre before the now-infamous photograph of Andrew with her surfaced. There is no evidence that the officer followed through on the request, and Giuffre's family has confirmed she never had a criminal record.
