On Friday, November 7, 1969, Sister Cathy Cesnik, a Roman Catholic Nun and English teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, MD, left her apartment to run errands and was never seen alive again. Two months later, Sister Cathy's body was discovered by two hunters in a wooded clearing approximately 5 miles from her home. Her killer was never found and her case remains unsolved today, but not for a lack of trying. Local police, Sister Cathy's family and former students have spend the last 5 decades trying to solve a mystery that goes much, much deeper than what we see on the surface. So deep, in fact, that you will not believe why so many people close to her believe Sister Cathy was murdered as part of a major coverup that is both scandalous and eye-opening.If you have any information on Cathy Cesnik's case, please contact the Baltimore City Homicide Unit through Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7-LOCKUP. That's 866-756-2587. A $2K reward for information leading to an arrest is still active in this case. After you listen to this episode, be sure to check out the 6-part Netflix series, The Keepers, that goes way beyond any of Deb and Shelbey's questions we have in this case, and see if you can help solve the case.Listen to new episodes every Thursday wherever you get your podcasts! Mind Over Murder

It's holiday gift time! If you're not sure what to get the true crime aficionado in your life, never fear! Mind Over Murder has you covered!GIFT OF BOOKS:1) A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind-- Ann Burgess and Steven Constantine. If you're a fan of David Fincher's colossal hit MINDHUNTER, you won't want to miss the story of the real-life Wendy Carr, the brilliant psychiatric nurse who worked alongside Robert Ressler, John Douglas, and the other pioneering FBI agents in Quantico's Behavioral Science Unit. Even if you think you're familiar with the early days of the BSU from Douglas and Olshaker's books, trust me, you don't know the half of it! This book is a treat for anyone who wants more on the development of profiling.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of the initial books from Douglas and Olshaker; a viewing of Fincher's MINDHUNTER; or the Audible presentation of the book, beautifully read by Gabra Zackman. We interviewed Ann and Steven about their book on Mind Over Murder on our episode from July 18, 2022.2) Frozen in Fear: A True Story of Surviving the Shadows of Death-- Jane Carson-Sandler.Jane is one of the surviving victims of the Golden State Killer and she is one tough-as-nails lady! This short memoir details her life both before and after the attack and discusses how she put her life back together to both survive and to thrive in spite of her trauma.PAIR THIS WITH: Michelle McNamara and Paul Haynes “I'll Be Gone in the Dark”; the HBO mini-series of the same name; XG Productions Audible Original “Evil Has a Name.”3) When a Killer Calls-- John Douglas and Mark Olshaker.I'm an unabashed John Douglas fan; everything he and Mark Olshaker have ever written lives somewhere on my true crime bookshelves. But this is by far the best of their work and that is really saying something! The kidnapping and murder of Shari Smith is horrifying, but even more so is the behavior of the offender. It is so audacious and cruel that it sounds like something from a movie. John's work on the case will break your heart… but it is the work of a profiler at the top of his game!PAIR THIS WITH: Anything this dynamic duo have previously written! You will never get a boring or poorly written book from these guys!We interviewed Mark Olshaker about this book on Mind Over Murder on February 14th and February 21st, 2022.4) Journey to the Center of the Mind Books 1-3-- James Fitzgerald.Grab a hot drink, snuggle under a warm blanket, and leave yourself plenty of time to binge! Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald's career as both a uniformed cop and then an FBI profiler is full of ups and downs, which he skillfully and entertainingly details in his books. Get all 3 books if you want the full and unabridged Fitz story, though book 3 is my favorite as that's where we learn all about the Unabomb case and linguistic profiling. Make sure you check out his website for books and other merch (www.jamesrfitzgerald.com) including autographed posters.PAIR THIS WITH: Fitz's podcast The Fitz Files (which features a cameo from Kristin); the original drama MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; and the XG Productions Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs.”We interviewed Fitz on Mind Over Murder about the Unabomber and his books on June 30 and July 7, 2022.5) ShadowMan: An Elusive Psycho Killer and the Birth of FBI Profiling-- Ron Franscell. The story of Howard Teten and Patrick Mullany's profile of the Susie Jaeger kidnapping case was all new to me, but it's an absolutely enthralling story. These are the two men who started the BSU—the profiling legends we know today (Rob Ressler, John Douglas, Judd Ray) learned the ropes from Teten and Mullaney. The unsub at the heart of this story is your classic “nice guy next door” and it will definitely make you reevaluate what you think you know about your neighbors! It's a pulse pounding read!PAIR THIS WITH: If you're in the mood for a history of the early days of the BSU, start here, progress to Ann Burgess's “A Killer by Design”, then move on to the earliest Douglas and Olshaker collabs “Mindhunter” and “Journey into Darkness.” Take time for Robert Ressler's book “Whoever Fights Monsters” as well.6) Madman in the Woods—Jamie Gehring. What was it like to live literally next door to Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber? To have him show up at your door and even have him over for dinner? Jamie Gehring could tell you. She lived next to him in Montana. If you ever wanted to know who Ted Kaczynski was and how he evolved into the Unabomber, Jamie's book will bring you as close as you'll ever come, short of having a conversation with him yourself. This is a stunner of a memoir. I can't recommend it enough.PAIR THIS WITH: Jim Fitzgerald's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE MIND, book 3; a viewing of MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs”; the Audible version of this book, read by Jamie herself. We interviewed Jamie on Mind Over Murder on June 27th, 2022.7) Keeping On—Gemma Hoskins. You knew her and loved her on THE KEEPERS! But do you know the real Gemma Hoskins? You can by reading her book! Gemma's memoir is by turns funny, poignant, and insightful. There's plenty of info on Sister Cathy Cesnik's case and yes, there are some bombshells you won't want to miss!PAIR THIS WITH: A re-watch of THE KEEPERS! It's been a few years since it first aired, so it's more than time to give it another viewing! Pop some popcorn, grab a fuzzy blanket, and be prepared to give up a few hours of your life in a binge of epic proportions. We interviewed Gemma on Mind Over Murder on July 28th and August 4th.8. Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders—Kathryn Miles. This labor of love from Kate Miles is one of the best true crime reads in recent memory, tying together the murders of Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in the Shenandoah National Park with other missing and murdered women in Virginia. She discusses some compelling theories as to who may have murdered the women back in 1996 and sheds light on major issues within the NPS during that time period. It's thought-provoking and sensitive reporting. Highly recommended!PAIR THIS WITH: “The Cold Vanish” from Jon Billman (which we featured on last year's gift guide), which also explores disappearances and murders in national parks. We interviewed Kate on Mind Over Murder on May 16th and May 23rd of 2022.9) How to Catch a Killer and I Scream Man—Dr. Katherine Ramsland. We couldn't pick just one book out of Dr. Ramsland's whopping catalogue; you'll never get a bad book from this talented, astute, and prolific writer. But we opted for her two most recent releases—How to Catch a Killer is about the hunt for and capture of the world's most notorious serial killers including Rodney Alcala (the Dating Game killer); GSK; Aileen Wuoronos; and many more. This is part of the Profiles in Crime series, so if you love this one, there's more to come. And we couldn't neglect Dr. Ramsland's fiction debut … I Scream Man, featuring protagonist Annie Hunter who seems to be quite a bit like the good doctor herself! It's an excellent first book in a new series and we are looking forward to more! Check out all of Dr. Ramsland's books at www.katherineramsland.net.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of her 70 other books! I recommend the two that tie in to CSI and CRIMINAL MINDS.We interviewed Dr. Ramsland on Mind Over Murder on July 4 and July 11 of 2022.10) The Babysitter—Liza Rodman.Imagine, if you will, learning that your beloved childhood babysitter was a sadistic psychopath who was murdering women when he wasn't watching you. That's precisely what happened to Liza Rodman when she learned that Tony Costa, handyman and her childhood babysitter, was the ghoul responsible for murdering and dismembering four women in the Truro woods near Provincetown. The premise on its own is enough to make your skin crawl … learning what Tony Costa was actually doing made me want to sleep with the lights on! This pairs perfectly with HELLTOWN by Casey Sherman, which covers Tony Costa's crimes.PAIR THIS WITH: HELLTOWN, below!11) Helltown—Casey Sherman.Liza Rodman's childhood babysitter, Tony Costa, was a horrific serial killer who haunted the Cape Cod and Provincetown area, murdering and dismembering women. His horrific crimes and his court case are covered expertly in the book. Also explored is the pull the case had over two enigmatic local writers—Kurt Vonnegut and Normal Mailer. This meticulously researched and brilliantly crafted book was one of my favorite true crime reads of this year.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BABYSITTER, above! We interviewed Casey on Mind Over Murder on September 19th 202212) American Demon—Daniel Stashower. There's so much more to Eliot Ness than his time with the Untouchables. This deep dive into Ness's time in Cleveland and his work trying to solve the series of brutal slayings by the Butcher of Kingsbury Run is masterful. Stashower has a wonderful touch with historical crimes … they seem to come alive on the page. The book is meticulously researched, gorgeously written, and will keep you turning pages.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL, Stashower's book about the murder of Mary Rogers and Edgar Allan Poe's involvement in it.We interviewed Dan on Mind Over Murder on October 31st, 2022.GIFTS OF SERVICE:1) You can help to solve a crime in one of two ways by going to DNASolves.com. You can either help to fund a case (or two or three) in any dollar amount, large or small, or you can follow the instructions on how to provide your own DNA to help grow the searchable law enforcement database.2) We know you love the work that Othram does as much as we do! It's a True Crime week, murderinos! In this week's episode, we're on the case of not one but two infamous True Crime stories that have been famously featured in recent streaming series. Lauren starts us off with the case of Candy Montgomery - a woman who murdered her friend, Betty Gore, with an axe in Wylie, TX on Friday the 13th, 1980. You can see the dramatized version of this story in Hulu's "Candy" starring Jessica Biel as Candy AND yet another upcoming series based on the same story - HBO Max "Love and Death" starring Elizabeth Olsen as Candy.Later in the episode, Felicia covers the unsolved murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik in Baltimore, Maryland. Her body was discovered on January 3, 1970 under mysterious circumstances. While the case has never been officially solved or suspects charged,  the nun may have known too much about the sexual assault on students by two priests at Archbishop Keough High School where she worked. The True Crime tale was explored in Netflix's critically acclaimed "The Keepers" docuseries in 2017.

Gemma Hoskins remembers high school fondly, thanks in large part to her favorite teacher Sister Cathy Cesnik. So, when the beloved nun disappeared one November night in 1969 only to eventually be discovered dead in the woods, grief took hold over this ambiguous story for decades. And then, truth-telling around abuse in those hallowed halls merged with Gemma's outstanding questions. 40 years after the murder, she got to work with the help of a former classmate of hers, and together they'd uncover more about the past than anyone expected. In this episode, we discuss an unsolved murder. Haunting, horrible, upsetting and deeply troubling documentary: The Keepers on Netflix. Gemma Hoskins, Emmy Nominated for The Keepers, is still hunting down who killed beloved teacher and nun Sister Cathy Cesnik. Every now and again you stumble across a documentary that leaves you speechless, of murder, sexual violence, and hidden secrets, that plants an expression of disbelief across your face that lasts long after you've finished watching it. One, that leaves you no choice but to be heavily invested in strangers' lives, and leaves you still trying to find resolve to unanswered questions in the days that follow. A documentary that makes you question what the hell is wrong with the world. The Keepers is one of those documentaries. Our guest today, is Gemma Hoskins, one of the students of Sister Cathy, and at the center of the documentary, The Keepers. Horrible, gut wrenching and deeply haunting. But it's an important and incredibly brave story nonetheless. The Keepers tells the story of Sister Catherine Cesnik, a 26-year-old nun living in Baltimore who was abducted and murdered back in the 1960s. The case was never solved, but was linked to a horrific history of sexual abuse by a chaplain called Father Joseph Maskell. The documentary itself is incredibly interesting, but the subject matter is difficult and descriptions of what happened are upsetting and rather detailed, so I'd probably make sure you're aware of what you're getting yourself into before you dive into your next true crime binge.Meet Gemma Hoskins who shares with us today, her personal, relentless pursuit of the unsolved murder of her favorite high school teacher, Sister Cathy Cesnick and what they uncovered, which was more horrible than even murder.Listeners, Please Note:  Shari Karney, the host of Roar with Shari. . . During the 1970s in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Prince George's Counties in Maryland, there were numerous unsolved homicides--mostly of young women--fitting similar patterns. Our first case involves the murder a 17 year old named Donna Lee Dustin who was killed while her family was on vacation. Her murder has haunted residents of Bowie, Maryland for over 40 years. A story of sex, drugs, and rock n roll we look into Donna's case which has baffled investigators. Then we discuss several murders of young women that may have connections to the famous Maryland murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik. Cesnik's case was featured on the Netflix series, The Keepers. Our unsolved cases are eerily similar to Cesniks with the victims having ties to Father Joseph Maskell, a Catholic priest implicated in numerous sexual assaults. Were these murders the works of individuals, a serial killer or perhaps multiple serial killers working in Maryland during the 1970s? Mountain Murders checks out differing possibilities and theories surrounding these unsolved cold cases. Intro Music by Joe Buck YourselfHosts: Heather & Dylan Email: mountainmurderspodcast@gmail.com

The Keepers is a seven-episode web series directed by Ryan White on Netflix. The series explores the unsolved murder of 26-year-old nun Sister Cathy Cesnik, an English and drama teacher at Baltimore’s Archbishop Keough High School, and her former students’ belief that there was a cover-up by authorities after Cesnik suspected that a priest at the school, A. Joseph Maskell, was guilty of sexual abuse of students. Gemma Hoskins was a student of Cesnik when she went missing November 1969, and with the help of her classmate Abbie Schaub has dedicated her retirement to finding the identity of Cesnik’s killer. Gemma, a key figure in the Netflix docuseries, helps narrates the events that took place at Keough High School in the 60s and 70s. In this special episode Kate asks a medium to discuss the unsolved mysteries of the murders of Sister Cathy Cesnik and Kathleen Peterson, the kidnapping of Sherri Papini, and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Catherine Anne "Cathy" Cesnik SSND was a Catholic religious sister who taught English and drama at the formerly all-girls Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, Maryland. On November 7, 1969, Cesnik disappeared. Her body was discovered on January 3, 1970, near a garbage dump in the Baltimore suburb of Lansdowne. Her murder remains unsolved. In December 2001, novelist Michael Peterson called to report that his wife Kathleen had fallen down a set of stairs and died. The authorities disbelieved Peterson's story that Kathleen had fallen while drunk and concluded instead that Peterson had bludgeoned her to death, most likely with a fireplace poker which was discovered missing from the house. Peterson was soon charged with murder and the Netflix series The Staircase details the ensuing case from the point of view of Peterson and his defense team, led by David Rudolf. Sherri Papini claims she was abducted on November 2, 2016, while out jogging a mile from her home in Redding, California. Papini was 34 years old at the time. She was found three weeks later on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, having been freed by her captors at 4:30 that morning still wearing restraint. The case garnered major media attention, but no arrests have been made and authorities report the investigation is ongoing as of April, 2017Madeleine McCann disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal, sparking what one newspaper called “the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history”. Her whereabouts remain unknown.Reality Life with Kate Casey http://www.loveandknuckles.comTwitter: @katecaseyInstagram: @katecaseycaFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/113157919338245/Facebook.com/loveandknucklesAmazon List: http://www.amazon.com/shop/katecaseycaZIP RECRUITERhttp://www.ziprecruiter.com/realitylifeSUAVEhttp://www.suave.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This episode continues difficult subject matter around childhood sexual abuse. *Check out part one for more information* In episode one of this two part series, we spoke with several people to follow up on the continued work toward justice since Netflix’s Oscar nominated docuseries The Keepers premiered in May of 2017. The series explored the murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik in 1969, a 26 year old nun and teacher, but there was much more to the story than that. A ring of abuse was taking place at Archbishop Keough High School with a man named Father Joseph Maskell at the center, and his victims are now assumed to be in the hundreds. It is likely he hand a hand in Sister Cathy's murder, who was trying to expose the abuse. Teresa Lancaster and Alan Horn join us again for part two, where explore the what it’s like to be working voluntarily on a case like this. We will also be speaking with a woman who chose to go by the name Piper, one of the volunteers who works along side Alan and Teresa making calls to victims and piecing together clues. Piper wished to remain anonymous, as powerful institutions are involved in what Alan, Teresa, Piper, and many others believe to be a serious cover-up. Piper shares with us what it is like to work on a case like this. Like I said before, we are exploring what happens when the cameras go off, when the awards season is over, but justice has not yet been served. This episode continues difficult subject matter around childhood sexual abuse. *Part two coming January 23* The Keepers, a 7-part, Oscar nominated docuseries from Netflix, premiered in May of 2017, and existed on its surface as an investigation into the 1969 murder of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a 26-year-old nun and teacher at Arch Bishop Keough HS in Baltimore. But it was obvious right away that the murder of Sister Cathy wasn’t the only story that needed to be told. The series also helped to give a mainstream voice to several sexual abuse victims of Father Joseph Maskell, who was a counselor at the high school who died in 2001 and likely had a role in Sister Cathy’s murder, as it is believed that she was threatening to expose the profound abuse that was occurring to high school students at the hands of Maskell and other powerful community members, abuse that was covered up by the same powerful institutions. In the first part of this two part series, I am joined by Teresa Lancaster, who you will remember from the Keepers. She is one of the two women who first spoke out about the abuse she suffered at the hands of Maskell, and continues to work toward justice for Maskell’s victims, over 100 of which have come forward. Along with Jean Wehner, known then as Jane Doe, Teresa became known in 1994 as ‘Jane Roe,’ but, after horrific court proceedings, the Maryland Court of Appeals refused to allow the case to go to trial because the statue of limitations had passed. Nonetheless, that courageous act sparked the events that would go on to form The Keepers, and would allow a community to join together to fight for a long overdue justice, both for Sister Cathy, and for the victims of abuse at Keough and beyond. Teresa has since become a lawyer. Alan Horn, who was also featured in the Keepers documentary, is an amateur investigator who has voluntarily played a very helpful role in the path toward justice through his individual research. We are going to hear more about him, and also more from in the next episode. Both Teresa and Alan came to be associated with these cases in very different ways, but now both work toward the same goals. We will also be speaking with a woman named Dr. Pamela Pine, an expert in childhood sexual abuse, who will help us understand this abuse as a public health crisis. What is it about habits and cassocks that capture the imagination of even secular audiences? Mix those priests and nuns with a murder mystery and you’ve got a ready-made hit. Netflix’s Emmy-nominated documentary series “The Keepers,” begins with the story of Sister Cathy Cesnik, a beloved Catholic high school teacher, who was murdered in 1969 and whose case remains unsolved. But it quickly evolves into something much larger: an excruciating investigation into clerical sex abuse at the school. This week, we talk to Nick Ripatrazone about the series—and ask why it is important for Catholics to watch shows and films that expose the church’s sins. And in Signs of the Times, a message from the Holy Father: Stop complaining! At least to the pope. Save it for the Lord; he’s much more patient. Next, a Catholic priest in [...]
