We’re on the hunt for all things spooky! A bloody good podcast about the dark side of life served up with a side of sweet treats. Hosted by Elise Giordano + Halee Rae.
Send us a textWith bodies popping up all over the Eastern Seaboard, people are starting to question, is there a New England serial killer? And more importantly, is it Taylor Swift? The police aren't releasing many clues, apart from “no signs of foul play,” but a leg found in an affluent neighborhood and bodies floating down rivers would beg to differ. Still, foul play does not a serial killer make. We'll cover the latest timeline and crime scene details and come to our own conclusions. We'll also dig into New England's sordid history of past unsolved serial killings and learn about a potential mass murderer stalking men in Boston. Happy haunting!Get in touch! Send us a textCoven, we've been trying for the past few years to carve out our niche in the heavily populated podcast world, and we think we've finally found it. Over and over again we find ourselves bringing you the latest news on three of the most important contemporary topics: Bigfoot, AI, and creepy clowns. This week is no exception as we discuss a compelling sasquatch sighting, all the shitty things AI did this week, and yet another case of a strange clown making people uncomfortable. We'll also talk about a possible New England serial killer, Annabelle the haunted doll burning down a plantation, and get the highlights from halee's trip to UFO fest. All of that and so much more await you on this week's roundup of all things spooky and strange! Happy Haunting! Get in touch! Send us a textOn June 4th, 2010, 7 year old Kyron Horman was excited to present his project on red-eyed tree frogs at his elementary school's science fair. His step-mom Terri drove him to school, browsed the fair with him, snapped a photo of him next to his poster, and then said goodbye. She watched him turn around and walk down the hallway towards his classroom, and then she left. That would be the last time anyone would see Kyron. This week on EBC, we dive into the mysterious disappearance of this sweet boy. We'll learn about what would become the largest criminal investigation in Oregon state history, and pretty quickly come to our own conclusions about this baffling case. We'll also talk about the very intense and active subreddit community working hard to piece together this confusing puzzle. Tune in and let us know what you think really happened! Happy Haunting! Send us a textWhat a whirlwind this week, folks! We may be entering our EBC Lite era, but this latest news update is anything but! We're living vicariously through scientists uncovering the new color olo, we're getting updates about the other Don in our lives (who's also a clown, literally) and we're getting hung up on news from Rome. (Hint, it's not about the Pope.) We'll learn about the time Halee met Justin Bieber as a grown adult woman, how Elise gets sucked into pop culture Reddit threads, and despite warnings from the "Godfather of AI," we'll ask Zoom's Chat Bot to summarize this episode for us. So please tune in and enjoy our "casual banter and diverse subject matter, which likely will appeal to current and future podcast listeners." Happy haunting! Get in touch! Send us a textIn 1900, 20 miles off the coast, one of Scotland's greatest mysteries unfolded on the Flannan Isles. Its lighthouse, finished just one year earlier, failed to turn on. For days it remained dark, and when a ship came to relieve the island's keepers, they found the island deserted. All three lighthouse keepers had vanished into thin air, leaving little to no clues. Was it a rogue wave? Was it a murder suicide? Maybe a sea monster or UFO? Anything is possible. We'll dig into the conditions of their quarters and read entries from their logbook to determine what really happened on that cold December day. Happy haunting! Get in touch! Even more, we'll update you on the most important current events, so that you can continue to avoid news outlets! We also have updates galore, from Lori Vallow to Gaby Petito. We'll learn about a new immersive sasquatch experience, and share our most cinematic hot takes. Send us a textIn the summer of 1969, strange things started happening on Lake Worth, outside of Forth Worth, Texas. There were whispers of an odd creature- described as part man, part fish, and part goat- being spotted in a local nature preserve. What started out as an outlandish rumor became front-page news on July 10, 1969, when the creature jumped on the hood of a car and disappeared into the forest, but not before leaving an 18 inch scratch down the side of the vehicle. When 6 visibly shaken locals showed up at the sheriff's office to report the incident, law enforcement had no choice but to investigate these strange goings on. Soon, seemingly the entire town was taking to the forest, armed with whatever weaponry they could find to hunt down the Lake Worth Monster. But would they catch him? There's new evidence in the disappearance of Maura Murray, a missing person's body is found in a treehouse, and a husband tried to push his wife off a cliff but ghosts maybe saved her? TBD. Send us a textLast week, we toured the haunted streets of London's Whitechapel district and explored the hunting grounds of the world's most mysterious serial killer - Jack the Ripper. Since 1888, his identity has remained a mystery, with authors and self-proclaimed "Ripperologists" claiming they have all the answers. This week, we'll dig in to theories old and new and highlight the most compelling and the most ridiculous. New DNA evidence claims to have answered this mystery once and for all, but will we ever know who the Ripper really was? And do we really want to? Happy Haunting! Get in touch! Send us a textIn the summer of 1888, the streets of London were a bleak affair. The working class were desperate, thunderstorms ravaged the streets and in the early morning hours, a devil was terrorizing the sex workers of Whitechapel. Arguably the most infamous serial killer of all time, Jack the Ripper would claim the lives of five women, mangling their bodies in the streets and then seemingly disappearing into the night. In part one of this two part series, we'll dig into the histories of the poor women whose lives he stole, and question whether there were more victims than the official five. We'll follow his footsteps through London's dark streets and learn about the only key piece of evidence left behind. We'll end with the biggest mystery of all - who was Jack? Send us a textCoven, there has been so much happening in the news, and we have been waiting patiently to cover it! The recurring theme this week seems to be 'things we'd love to watch a TV show about' - from a meltdown happening at an Antarctic research base, to an exorcism at 30,000 feet, there's plenty to discuss. We'll talk about the mysterious circumstances around Gene Hackman's death, and learn about how Aaron Goodwin very nearly went on a permanent Ghost Adventure. Send us a textLast week, we joined the Donner Party on the first half of their journey from Missouri to California. When we last left them, they were camped out by Truckee Lake in the Sierra Nevadas, and snow began falling on their camp. The group could not know then what that snowfall meant, and the sad fate that would await them in the coming months. In the final installment of our Donner Party series, we will learn about the brutal winter of 1846, as the group fought for survival amid 20 feet of snow and unimaginably harsh conditions. We'll learn just what humans are capable of when faced with the worst adversity one can think of- both the good and the bad parts of humanity on display. And we'll learn about the strength this group mustered in the face of unthinkable suffering. This one is certainly not all sunshine and roses, but we'll do our best to find a laugh or two when we can, and a few lessons along the way! Lisey ends this episode on a bright note, sharing exciting news of some new furry additions to her family (and maybe a little insurance policy for those long, cold Alaska winters?) Happy Haunting! Send us a textIn the spring of 1846, over 500 covered wagons set off from Independence, Missouri, headed West towards a new life. They could not fathom the difficulties and harsh conditions they would encounter along their journey, and this was especially true for one group of pioneers, now infamously known as the Donner Party. Most have heard salacious headlines outlining the gruesome atrocities committed by the group, but not many know the equally fascinating story of the beginning of their journey. In part one of this two part series, we'll learn about the first 7 months of their crossing, from Illinois to the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. We'll hear the details of the brutal challenges they encountered on the Oregon Trail, and one fateful wrong decision that would come to cost many human lives. Send us a textIt's Valentine's Day, coven! And nothing says true love like a woman saving herself from her abuser. The story of Lorena Bobbitt is a muddled one, evoking images of an angry, jealous woman who exacted her revenge by cutting off her husband's penis. The true story, however, is much more sinister. John Wayne Bobbitt, while quite simple-minded, was anything but innocent. In the words of Cell Block Tango, "He had it coming," just not in the way he hoped. Tonight, we'll explore John and Lorena's short and rocky marriage, dig into John's extensive history of abuse, and discover what Lorena did with that penis after she cut it off. We'll talk about each of their subsequent trials and learn where they are today in the aftermath of a case that rocked the nation. Happy Haunting! Get in touch! Send us a textCoven, you've heard us share our constant worry that we're both dangerously susceptible to joining a cult. This week, we're really putting our strong will to the test as we cover arguably the coolest cult we've ever heard of. It's got the first female truck driver in Brazilian history, it's got aliens, it's got astral projection, it's got super rad outfits, and it has friendly Jesus. What more could we ask for? In the 1950s, Neiva Chavez Zelaya had been suffering for years from disturbing visions and overwhelming out of body experiences that she couldn't explain. Eventually, she sought help from psychics and spiritual healers, and learned to harness what would become extraordinary gifts. She used these gifts to heal the poor and sick, and grew a following that would number in the hundreds of thousands. Will we soon count ourselves among those followers? Send us a textIn July 1969, the United States beat the Soviet Union in the decades long Space Race, taking one giant leap onto the surface of the moon. Neil Armstrong's steps would go down in history as one of mankind's greatest achievements. But there are those who question whether it happened at all. Was our technology really up to the task? Or were we fighting a losing battle against the Soviets, desperate to hold on to our reputation? We'll explore the history of the Space Race and the two brains behind it all - Wernher Von Braun and Sergei Korolev. One a former major in the SS and the other a former prisoner of the Gulag. Both would use their knowledge of rocket science to advance space travel in ways we'd never before seen. We'll dig into conspiracy theories started by technical writer Bill Kaysing, and examine photos from the landing that people love to pick apart. In the end, we'll tell you where we each land. Send us a textIn 2012, FBI agents arrested a man for the murder of Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska. What they didn't realize was that they'd apprehended one of America's most prolific serial killers: Israel Keyes. Citing a split personality, Keyes went on a crime spree across the country for fourteen years, robbing banks, burning down houses and taking lives. He buried kill kits across the country so he'd never miss an opportunity, and he got away with it for years. After his arrest in 2012, Keyes opened up about his past, but with a few major conditions. This week, we're digging into documents straight from the FBI and uncovering the life and crimes of one of America's lesser known monsters. Tune in for the final chapter of this two-part series. Send us a textOn February 1, 2012, Samantha Koenig was taken from a coffee stand in Anchorage, Alaska. Her disappearance made no sense to investigators. There weren't signs of a struggle, she'd sent an angry text to her boyfriend, and security footage showed two people walking through a parking lot arm in arm. But when a ransom note appeared weeks after her capture, accompanied by a disturbing photo of Samantha, investigators were sure she was in danger. ATM withdrawals would take detectives thousands of miles away to Lufkin, Texas, where they'd arrest a killer who was more monster than man. Police weren't prepared for the psychopath they'd placed in custody, but they would soon uncover chilling horrors and resolutions to questions long unanswered. In part one of this terrifying story, we'll discover harrowing details about this lesser known serial killer and learn just how apathetic he was about his crimes. Send us a textThroughout the entirety of this podcast, we've heard this question over and over: "If UFOs are real, why haven't more people seen them?" It's a valid question, and yet the more we learn about extraterrestrial activity, the more we realize that people have been seeing them! And sometimes even on a massive scale. This week we'll learn about two such examples, where dozens and even hundreds of folks saw the same thing around the same place and time. First, we'll travel to Western Massachusetts in 1969, where a hot September evening saw inexplicable lights and crafts over multiple towns. Next, we'll cover what is quickly becoming halee's favorite UFO sighting! We'll discuss the 1994 Michigan mass sighting, where hundreds of puzzled residents wondered what on earth they were seeing above their houses. We'll talk about radar data, listen to some seriously cool 911 calls, and hear halee's renewed passion for Ufology (and Paul Mescal). Not only do we want to believe... we do believe! Believing her captors were part of the Yakuza, she did as she was told so as not to endanger her family. She was raped, beaten, forced to eat roaches, kept from showering and set on fire. Send us a textOn February 9th, 2004, 21 year college student Maura Murray made a series of decisions that have haunted, puzzled, and captivated folks the world over for the past 20 years. Maura sent off an email informing her college professors that she would be out of town due to a death in her family, despite no such death having occurred. Send us a textSpooky season is in full swing, witches, and what better way to celebrate than with a terrifyingly true ghost story. In the late 70s, a family of five in Enfield, England would experience one of the most prolific ghost encounters ever documented. Knocking could be heard throughout the house. Marbles were thrown from unseen hands. Furniture was moved across the room, and dozens of people were there to witness it. The haunting centered around Margaret and Janet Hodgson, both going through puberty, and it continued to escalate for the next two years. Janet started speaking in a different voice. She'd levitate from her bed and even claimed to move through walls. Was it ghosts? Or was it the results of a fractured family, with a young girl seeking attention? Send us a textIn 1845, a crew of 134 men set out in search of the elusive Northwest Passage, hoping to find a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Armed with thousands of canned goods, gallons of lemon juice and a passion for adventure, they set forth on the HMS Terror and Erebus, ready for a taste of glory. Instead, they found themselves stuck at sea for more than three years, their ships encased in thick, unforgiving ice. When it refused to thaw in 1848, the men abandoned ship and headed out on foot in the hopes they'd find help and a way home. And then... they seemingly disappeared. It would take years before any trace of the men was found, and what was discovered were simply sun bleached bones, scattered in the wind. Today, much of the failed Franklin expedition remains a mystery, but a few clues have been realized, painting a grisly picture for the crew who gave their lives in pursuit of discovery. We'll discuss possible theories, dive into AMC's miniseries "The Terror" and uncover the shocking details that make this 140-year-old mystery so haunting. Elise can't get this one out of her head, and perhaps you won't be able to either. Northwest Passage cruise, anyone? Happy Haunting! Get in touch! Send us a textOn June 4th, 2004, Marvin Heemeyer embarked on a rampage in his fortified Komatsu bulldozer that would forever change the town of Granby, CO. But before Killdozer, there was Marvin the welder, who loved snowmobiling and being outdoors. How did this seemingly normal man go from well-loved community member to the manifesto spouting anti-government character in the headlines? This week we'll explore the origin of this sad and shocking story, and ask ourselves the important and difficult questions. Was Marv a folk hero or a lunatic? Is it possible he was a bit of both? You know we have strong opinions and we aren't afraid to share them! Tune in and form your own opinion about Marv and this wild story!Happy Haunting!
Send us a textOh coven, you're in for such a treat this week. You may have figured out last week from our subtle hints and spooky foreshadowing that we're bringing back a tried and true favorite- spooky hour! We finally tackle one of our shared obsessions... glitches in the matrix. Have you ever lost time that you couldn't account for? Had a strange occurrence that you just couldn't explain? Sometimes the answer is simpler than we might realize- we actually live in a simulation and sometimes there are errors in the code. There really isn't any better explanation for the stories we're sharing this week! We scoured the internet to find our favorite glitch in the matrix stories and can't wait to share them with you. Listen with your feet firmly planted on the ground or you may get sucked into this rabbit hole, folks! Happy Haunting!
Send us a textAs the title suggests, this episode is anything but linear. We're taking you on a roller coaster ride of tangents, all the way from Elise's opinion on Longlegs to politicians helping the homeless. Of course we'll bring you some actual news, including one theme park's ridiculous law suit and the solving of a 40-year old cold case through DNA. In an episode of true tangents, we'll also discuss how DNA gets into the hands of law enforcement and ask whether we should be giving it away so willy nilly. Happy haunting!
America's National Parks are as inspiring as they are humbling. Their vast landscapes provide a place for adventure and exploration, but solitude can turn deadly if you're not prepared. At 3.4 million acres, Death Valley is the most sprawling and desolate park in the Lower 48. Reaching temperatures of 134 degrees, much of its landscape is inhabitable and unforgiving. In 1996, four German tourists entered the park completely unprepared for the kind of topography and environment they'd encounter. When they missed their return flight home, the four were reported missing, seemingly without a trace. Three months later, their rented minivan would be found two miles down Anvil Canyon, with no clue as to where the four had gone. Thirteen years later, dedicated search and rescue volunteer Tom Mahood refused to give up on this decade-long cold case and set out on his own to uncover the truth of what happened to the “Death Valley Germans.” Was it aliens? A government coverup? Or does Mother Nature simply take no prisoners? You'll have to tune in to find out. Happy Haunting!
What a week, coven! From Irish moms giving orangutans nursing tutorials, to Floridians doomsday prepping in the worst way, there's plenty of strange news to discuss. We'll cover the latest in UFO sightings, the world's worst breakdancing, and most importantly, the shocking and fascinating story of a reincarnated 911 victim. You don't want to miss this weirdness, folks! Happy Haunting!
It's time for another cryptid roundup, and this time we're heading to halee's homeland to learn all about two famous PNW sea monsters! First we'll talk about Caborasaurus, a long, creepy serpent with a horse's head that has been spotted hundreds of times in the Vancouver Island area (and beyond) in the past 200 years. Is it the real deal, or the desperate imaginings of 2 quasi-scientists? Next, we'll discuss a cryptid you've heard us mention before... the infamous Ogopogo. We'll dig into the First Nations origins of the story, and learn about how much cooler this lake monster was before it became commercialized. This week Elise surprises and delights with an unexpected treat that you won't want to miss... Tune in for all that and more! Happy Haunting!
It's our first news update in what feels like forever! And you better believe it's a good one. We're covering crime-fighting eleven year old girls, babies who survive the unthinkable and idol culture in Japan. We'll hear about Halee's latest obsession - a self-published memoir laden with conspiracy theories, gifted by a fellow islander. Elise promises a future reading from a sure-to-be classic in erotic vampire fiction, and we'll give our opinions on the hotly debated Ballerina Farm expose. Need I say more? Happy haunting!
We're back, witches! Did you think we'd leave you for months again? Not this time! We're diving back into the world of true crime with a cold case from Breckenridge, CO. Bobbi Jo Oberholtzer and Annette Schnee went missing within hours of one another on a snowy night in 1982. Their crime scenes would hold two key pieces of evidence that would have investigators asking if this was the work of one man. Premonitions, playing cards and episodes of Unsolved Mysteries would all play a part in solving this 40 year whodunnit, but the answers lay in DNA. And the results are nothing short of shocking. Happy haunting!
Happy Friday, coven! This week brought all sorts of weird and wonderful news and of course we are here for it. We'll hear about the latest innovations in robot technology, and- spoiler alert- it's not great. We'll get some updates on Charlotte the stingray and Sherri Papini, and hear about a scandalous true crime story out of Boston. And then we'll ask the important questions- who is your dream dinner guest? And is God real? We'll tackle all this and more on this week's episode!
In 2016, Keith and Sherri Papini appeared, by all accounts, to be a picture perfect family. They lived in a quiet suburb in northern California with their 2 beautiful children, and Sherri lovingly referred to their life as her 'happily ever after'. But when Sherri vanished without a trace on November 2, 2016, their lives would be turned upside down andf those around them would come to realize that all was not as it seemed. This week we're covering the stranger than fiction tale of Sherri's disappearance, and for fear of giving away too much, all we can say is you don't want to miss this truly twisted tale! Happy Haunting!
The world is just as depraved as it was last news update, folks. Maybe even more so. And it seems a lot of the depravity resides in Florida! A man killed an entire family and then burned the evidence, but not before FaceTiming a friend with everything visible on camera. A woman murdered her boyfriend by zipping him up in a suitcase as she filmed his struggle, and later claimed she just fell asleep. There may be many criminals in the Sunshine State, but they're certainly not the brightest. Halee brings some updates regarding the pedo dad who drugged his daughter's friends, and reminds us that just when we thought Mothman couldn't get any sexier, he does. Tune in to get our latest hot takes and dumb jokes. Happy Haunting!
The world of the ooky spooky doesn't belong to cryptids, ghosts and aliens alone. Turns out, we humans are pretty spooky, too, particularly when it comes to matters of the heart. The heart is synonymous with love and the soul. But what would happen If you received the heart of someone else? Would you still be you? Is it possible that you'd take on traits and attributes from your donor? Sounds crazy, right? Turns out, your cells might hold on to memories, and should you ever need an organ, those memories may become yours. This week, we're digging into science and learning the ins and outs of heart transplants. We'll hear insane stories from the families of heart donors and recipients and learn that there's clearly so much more to learn about our incredible bodies and the cells that we're made of. Happy Haunting!
It's a most joyous occasion, coven! Your two favorite witches are reunited and recording together at last... and we are joined very briefly by 2 guests who will only make you appreciate our charm and wit even more! This week we have a great roundup of all the strangeness happening in the world. From UFOs and whatever the underwater version of a UFO is, to a plethora of true crime updates, to one of our favorite past times (making fun of Hilary Baldwin saying cucumber,) we have lots to talk about. And the tenacity and bravery to continue having the important conversations, even when we're targeted by advanced government tech that cut our power part-way through the episode, is nothing short of exemplary. It's full of excitement, drama, and spookiness, and you don't want to miss it!Happy Haunting!
The days are getting longer, the weather is getting nicer, and the summer season is fast approaching. But as you prepare to travel and spend time adventuring in your local forests- heed these cautionary tales of the creatures that lurk in the dark. This week, we're covering not one, but TWO classic American cryptids. First, we'll learn about the Flatwoods Monster, spotted in West Virginia in 1950. When a mom and a group of teens followed a bright light streaking across the sky, they could not have anticipated what they would find. Next, we'll travel up to Dover, Massachusetts where a creepy creature was spotted repeatedly in 1977. Of course Joe Nickell has simple explanations, but we don't buy them for a second. Tune in to this week's episode and decide for yourself!
This week, everyone's "good thing" is going to be that Halee went to UFO Fest and has returned to delight us with her findings. Shocker - aliens are real. Duh! We'll hear compelling firsthand accounts from military whistleblower Ryan Graves, and best of all, we'll get Jessiah's take on all things spooky. In the news, we'll hear about witches and warlocks duking it out (aka, old people being taken advantage of.) We'll learn that cheese mongers don't just specialize in cheese, but also defend themselves with it, and we'll get some pressing updates about past stories. There's all that and more in our weekly news update. Happy Haunting!
In 1959, the town of Holcomb, Kansas was a quiet farming community. People left their doors unlocked because nothing really bad ever happened there. But all that changed on November 15 when the Clutter family was found brutally murdered inside their two-story farmhouse. The motive wasn't clear. Was it a revenge killing? A robbery gone wrong? Maybe a serial killer? Detectives sifted through hundreds of tips before receiving a call from a prison inmate who claimed he knew who killed the Clutters. Truman Capote read an article about the murders in the New York Times and decided he needed to tell the story in his own words. Over the next five years, he'd immerse himself in the community of Holcomb and try to understand the mind of a killer. In doing so, he formed unexpected friendships and created what he called the first non-fiction novel. “In Cold Blood” was published to wide acclaim, but it didn't come without its own set of drawbacks. Capote would never be the same, and neither would Holcomb. Tune in to learn how this gruesome tragedy helped shaped the true crime genre as we know it. Happy haunting!
