Did you ever watch the Staircase docu-series on Netflix? Or the 2022 HBO MAX adaptation? I watched both, and still wanted to learn more about the divisive trial over the murder of Kathleen Peterson. Did her husband Michael kill her? Or was he railroaded by a justice system that held a grudge against him? Or, did Michael kill not only Kathleen, but also a woman in Germany years earlier? And did he have anything to do with the recent death of his first wife? Join The Bad Girl, The Playa, and our new co-host Tiffany Star, as we complete the POS Peterson Trilogy and examine the controversial case of renowned author Michael Peterson. Michael Iver Peterson (born October 23, 1943) is an American novelist who was convicted in 2003 of murdering his second wife, Kathleen Peterson, on December 9, 2001. After eight years, Peterson was granted a new trial after the judge ruled a critical prosecution witness gave misleading testimony. In 2017, Peterson submitted an Alford plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to time already served and freed. Elizabeth Ratliff, a friend of the Petersons, who died in Germany in 1985, had also been found dead at the foot of her staircase with injuries to the head. Her death had been investigated by both the German police and U.S. military police. An autopsy at the time of her death concluded Ratliff died from an intra-cerebral hemorrhage secondary to the blood coagulation disorder Von Willebrand's disease, based on blood in her cerebrospinal fluid and reports that she had been suffering severe, persistent headaches in the weeks leading up to her death. The coroner determined that the hemorrhage resulted in immediate death, followed by Ratliff falling down the stairs after collapsing. The Petersons had dinner with Ratliff and her daughters, and Peterson had stayed and helped Ratliff put the children to bed before going home. The children's nanny, Barbara, discovered the body when she arrived the next morning. Peterson was the last known person to see her alive. Did Peterson get off too easy? T.I.F.O.! In this week's Flightless Bird, David Farrier talks to Terra Newell, who you may well know from the Dirty John podcast. We look at what makes the True Crime genre such a big deal, and some of the ethical questions it raises. David also shares his favourite 10 True Crime bits of media with Monica and Rob - which are: Dear Zachary (2008): A filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend's ex-girlfriend announces she is expecting his son. Blackfish (2013) / The Cove (2009): A documentary following the controversial captivity of killer whales, and its dangers for both humans and whales. The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst (2015): Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki examines the complicated life of reclusive real estate icon Robert Durst, the key suspect in a series of unsolved crimes. The Staircase (2004): The high-profile murder trial of American novelist Michael Peterson following the death of his wife Kathleen Peterson in 2001. Last Call (2023): As the AIDS crisis intensifies in the early 1990s, homophobia and hate crimes increase, and a serial killer preys on gay men in New York City by infiltrating the queer nightlife to identify his victims. 6 The Thin Blue Line - 1988 (Errol Morris): A film that successfully argued that a man was wrongly convicted for murder by a corrupt justice system in Dallas County, Texas. Paradise Lost (1996): A horrific triple child murder leads to an indictment and trial of three nonconformist boys based on questionable evidence. Capturing the Friedmans (2003): Documentary on the Friedmans, a seemingly typical, upper-middle-class Jewish family whose world is instantly transformed when the father and his youngest son are arrested and charged with shocking and horrible crimes. The Imposter (2012): A documentary centered on a young man in Spain who claims to a grieving Texas family that he is their 16-year-old son who has been missing for 3 years. In The Dark Season 2: The second season of In the Dark explored the legal odyssey surrounding Curtis Flowers, who was accused of shooting four people to death inside Tardy Furniture, a Winona, Mississippi store, in July 1996 Honorable mentions: A Very Fatal Murder, American Vandal Other OGs: Helter Skelter (1974), In Cold Blood (1966), Making a Murderer (2018), Serial (2014) Learn more about your ad choices. True Crime Podcast 2024 - REAL Police Interrogations, 911 Calls, True Police Stories and True Crime
The Murder Of Kathleen Peterson [Crime Documentary] Kathleen Peterson worked for Nortel at the time of her death, and Michael Peterson was a published novelist. It all started in 2001, when Michael Peterson called 911 to report Kathleen having fallen down the stairs. He called again that night, and by the time emergency personnel got to the residence, Kathleen had died. Blood coated the walls and the stairs of the stairway inside the home. Michael Peterson was convicted guilty of killing his wife in the subsequent trial. He was eventually freed from prison after entering an Alford plea. This indicates that, while he maintains his innocence, he acknowledges that the evidence would be adequate to persuade a jury of his guilt. Michael Peterson tells a lot of falsehoods. He was allegedly injured during military action and was awarded two purple hearts as a consequence. These injuries were caused by a vehicle accident. Michael Peterson also claimed Kathleen Peterson was still alive when he discovered her, despite the fact that she had been dead for hours. Kathleen Peterson had a $1.4 million insurance policy, therefore Michael Peterson may have needed the money to pay off his $143,000 credit card bills. Michael Peterson had no real money of his own, so if Kathleen left him or lost her job, as seemed inevitable, he may lose everything. The problem is that one of his writings was being made into a film, which calls into doubt the concept that financial concerns drove him to murder when he was really receiving his own influx of cash. They were also not impoverished, with a net worth of $2 million, and could have paid off the bills. It appears improbable as a motive for murder. However, the money did not wind up going to Michael Peterson, but rather to her first husband and her daughter Caitlin. Michael Iver Peterson (born October 23, 1943) was convicted in 2003 of the murder of his second wife, Kathleen Peterson, on December 9, 2001. After eight years, Peterson was given a new trial after a judge decided that a key prosecution witness provided false testimony. This second trial was supposed to start on May 8, 2017. Peterson entered an Alford plea to the reduced charge of manslaughter on February 24, 2017. He was condemned to time served and then released. The Staircase, a documentary miniseries about Peterson's case, began filming immediately after his arrest in 2001 and tracked events until his ultimate Alford plea in 2017. In 2019, he shared his own story of his life since the loss of his wife Kathleen in an independently published book titled "Behind the Staircase."

One of the most studied murder trials in recent history is the case of Kathleen Peterson, which was featured in the TV series, The Staircase. Author Tiddy Smith recounts the story in his book Death by Talons and focuses on the most controversial part of the case…the owl theory. In 1998, a Utah publisher released “A World of Faith,” a children's book by The Salt Lake Tribune's award-winning religion writer, Peggy Fletcher Stack, with illustrations by celebrated Latter-day Saint artist Kathleen Peterson. Praise for the volume was wide and deep, including from former President Jimmy Carter. A commemorative version followed in 2001 to celebrate Salt Lake City's hosting of the 2002 Winter Olympics. The book's approach is simple: Take many of the world's major faith traditions, write a one-page explanation of their history and beliefs, make the text easy enough for youngsters but interesting enough for seasoned readers, and pair each entry with a gorgeous illustration depicting aspects of that religion. Yes, it's a modest model, but behind it rests a profound pursuit: Eliminate religious bigotry through increased understanding and turn today's readers into tomorrow's peacemakers. Now, 25 years later, BCC Press has issued revised second edition of “A World of Faith,” with an additional six non-Western religions added into the mix. The authors join us on this week's show to discuss the expanded book — what they learned; the challenges they faced (including how to handle the “Mormon” term); the commonalities, differences and beauties in religious diversity; and Latter-day Saints' awareness of other faiths. With the book's release, we're also making this special offer: Join Mormon Land on Patreon by Monday, May 15, and you'll be entered to win one of five signed copies of the volume. Current patrons will also be entered.

Greetings! In this episode we are joined by Marlene Sharp to discuss all things THE STAIRCASE. We cover a little bit about everything: the HBO series, the Netflix true-crime documentary as well as the Michael Peterson case itself. If you are not familiar with the events of THE STAIRCASE, here's essentially what happened.. Back in December 2001, Kathleen Peterson (48) was found dead at the bottom of the staircase. Her husband of four years, Michael, called 911 and reported the death. The autopsy concluded that Kathleen died by homicide. Michael was then arrested and charged with the murder of Kathleen. What happens beyond that is a wildass, bonkers-as-hell courtroom drama. Listen on as Marlene and I break it all down. Enjoy! True Crime Tuesday presents Death By Talons with Author Tiddy Smith! On December 9, 2001, Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in her Durham, NC home. Kathleen's scalp was laced with deep incisions and her blood strewn from outside to inside the house. The sinister truth of that night turned her murder into North Carolina's most enigmatic criminal case, capturing media attention across the globe. While police zeroed in on Michael Peterson, the husband, and charged him with murder, a neighbor, Larry Pollard, claimed an owl had attacked Kathleen outside her house. He said it sliced her scalp with its fierce talons and caused her to run inside, collapsing at the stairwell, bleeding to death. It was an outrageous theory. Author Tiddy Smith joins TCT to talk about the case, and why the classic formula of solving a murder doesn't fit here, and how potential corruption ran rampant throughout the justice system in this case! In the early hours of December 9th, 2001, a man named Michael Peterson made a panicked phone call to 911, telling them that his wife, 48 year old Kathleen Peterson, had fallen down the stairs and they should hurry because she was still breathing. Six minutes later he called back and reported that Kathleen was no longer breathing, she was gone. Initially, it appeared that this had been a tragic accident, but as first responders and law enforcement began to arrive at the scene, the tension was palpable. The Peterson family and friends felt that Michael was being unfairly targeted, that the police were only suspicious of him because he had been loudly outspoken and critical of the Durham North Carolina Police Department in his role as columnist for a local paper. The law enforcement professionals on the scene claimed that from the moment they walked in, it felt as if something wasn't right, and there was far too much blood for the death of Kathleen Peterson to be attributed to a simple fall down the stairs. December 9th, 2001 was an unseasonably warm night in Durham, North Carolina. At 2:40 a.m., a novelist named Michael Peterson called 911. He was frantic. He said his wife Kathleen had an accident. She had fallen down some stairs. Within 10 minutes, paramedics, police and the fire team swarmed the house. They were all startled by the amount of blood. Kathleen's blood was everywhere. It covered her body, the staircase, and the floor. Soon, homicide detectives were called to the scene. For the next 16 years, Durham law enforcement officials would pursue one fundamental question: Was Kathleen's death an accident?Hosted and produced by Erica KelleyResearched and written by Andrea Marshbank and Erica KelleyOriginal Graphic Art by Coley HornerOriginal Music by Rob Harrison of Gamma RadioEdited & Mixed by Next Day Podcast & Erica KelleySources: https://www.southernfriedtruecrime.com/the-neverending-staircase-part-1Prose is the healthy hair regimen with your name all over it. Inspired by a true story, the HBOmax original series "The Staircase" looks at the 2001 suspicious death of Kathleen Peterson and the life of her husband, Michael Peterson. The series' creator and executive producer Antonio Campos joins CBS News' Jamie Wax to discuss the complicated true crime story and the strong feelings that have surrounding the case since the beginning. He addresses criticism from the real-life Michael Peterson and others about the series getting things wrong. Campos shares how the concept for the project evolved from a movie to a limited series.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We continue our cross analysis of the HBO Max scripted version of "The Staircase" starring Toni Collette, and how it stacks up to the true events in the death of Kathleen Peterson. Laura and Jim both question the 911 calls made by Michael Peterson compared to how it was depicted in the show. Laura focuses on the gap in the timeline of these calls. We also discuss the three scenarios leading to Kathleen's death that the scripted show dramatized. On December 9, 2001, Kathleen Peterson died a terrible death, suffering for over 2 hours, bleeding from scalp lacerations and blunt force trauma while she lay in the stairwell of her North Carolina home. Her husband Michael Peterson was convicted of her murder after a contentious trial where all sorts of theories about who or what actually killed Kathleen were posited. Had Michael killed her in a fit of rage as the prosecution argued? Or did she fall down the staircase in a freak accident as claimed by her husband? The world became fascinated by this case due to a documentary called “The Staircase” which chronicled the run up to Michael's trial as well as his post conviction appeals through 2018. HBO Max has made the docuseries into a scripted show, starring Toni Collette as Kathleen and Colin Firth as Micheal. The RCP team looks back at our original coverage of “The Staircase” documentary and compares it with the new show. How do both projects stack up to the truth? The story of Michael Peterson, the mysterious death of his wife Kathleen Peterson, and the subsequent investigation, trial, and fallout on their family has challenged and fascinated audiences for years, starting with the 2004 true crime documentary series by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and now with HBO Max's "The Staircase." Written by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, with Campos directing six out of the eight episodes, the series has garnered critical acclaim for its performances and the exhausting detail which went into the research behind one of the most puzzled over mysteries of our time. Campos and Cohn joined us for a discussion following the show's finale to discuss their work on the series, what they really think happened to Kathleen Peterson, how the original documentary filmmakers are reacting to their portrayal in the series, and more. Michael Peterson said he found his wife at the bottom of the staircase after a fatal fall. But authorities believed when Kathleen Peterson learned of her husband's double life, he beat her skull with a blow poke in a fit of rage. With the support of his family, a top-notch defense attorney, and a French film crew documenting his every move, Peterson stood trial in a case filled with twists and revelations. Despite holes in the evidence, the jury convicted him of murder. The MAX Original 8-part drama “The Staircase” starring Colin Firth and Toni Collette takes the story beyond where its namesake documentary left off. We see Peterson's challenges in prison, his family's personal struggles, clashes over bias in the film - and yes - evidence that an owl attack accounted for Kathleen's wounds and disorientation. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF HBO'S "THE STAIRCASE" BEGIN APPROXIMATELY IN MINUTE 38:00In crime of the week: all shook up.
December 9th, 2001, novelist Michael Peterson calls 911 telling the operator that he's found his wife at the bottom of stairs in their home. She is still breathing, but there's lots of blood coming from her head. Kathleen Peterson later dies. When police and emergency personnel first enter the home, Peterson's injuries are characterized as accidental and the scene is not handled properly, forensically. Soon, however, the facts do not add up and Michael Peterson is charged with murder. Kathleen Peterson has seven head injuries. So where does the owl come in? The owl theory speculates that an owl attacked Kathleen, precipitating her fall, but in fact, this theory never makes it into court. Michael Peterson is found guilty at trial, and sentenced to life in prison. Eight years later, he is granted a new trial after evidence comes to light that a prosecution witness lied. Peterson is eventually released. New charges aren't filed because Michael Peterson takes an Alford plea. This allows him to not admit guilt, but rather acknowledge that the state has enough evidence to convict. Peterson said he simply didn't want to go through another trial ordeal. He was sentenced to time served. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Swedish actor describes himself as "quite a mellow guy." Playing a Viking warrior in the film The Northman gave Skarsgård a chance to tap into his animalistic nature. We talk about being a child actor in Sweden, growing up in a bohemian family, and his roles in Big Little Lies, Succession, and Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" music video. Also, John Powers reviews HBO Max's new drama series The Staircase, inspired by the true crime story and documentary series about the 2001 suspicious death of Kathleen Peterson.
