Meet Our Makers

Time to play some catch up! In this episode, we get to meet award-winning filmmaker of His Three Daughters, Azazel Jacobs. Full disclosure: this chat (and the one that will constitute my next episode too..shh!!) was actually recorded back in the spring, but life things and other deadlines kept pushing it, and now here I am embarrassingly in early winter only publishing it now. But, as it happens, I was already playing catch up with Azazel, who had released the magnificent His Three Daughters - starring Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne - about the year prior, which had come off a nice run of awards notice, including the prestigious Robert Altman award at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards. So it was great fun to look back on his eventful year, which felt like a bit of a breakthrough into a new echelon of visibility and acclaim for him. We talk a lot about that film, including what it was like to work with this cast, and with such a deeply heartfelt and personal story. We talk about his early foundational films he found as he was discovering his voice, his love of cinema, and how he comes at the art of moviemaking. It was a great chat, and even though it's coming out a bit late, I think you'll still find a lot to love about this deep talk with a talented filmmaker. Thanks for listening.

Is the cinema experience still king, or is streaming taking over the throne? In this episode of the Netflix vs. Cinema podcast, host Tosin (from Bromsgrove, UK) and London correspondent Holly Nesline dive deep into the latest theatrical releases and streaming gems to find out where your time and money are best spent. In This Episode: At the Cinema: We review the high-concept sci-fi rom-com Eternity , starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner . Tosin breaks down the film's unique depiction of the afterlife and why it's a "top-level rom-com" you need to see before it leaves theaters. Box Office Giants: We discuss the massive global success of Zootropolis 2 (Zootopia 2) and why its half-billion-dollar opening weekend is keeping it on the big screen well through the holidays. Must-Watch Streaming: Holly shares a glowing 5-star review for the gritty Indian crime series Delhi Crime on Netflix. We discuss the show's evolution across three series, including its powerful portrayal of the 2012 bus case and its exploration of sex trafficking. The Tarantino Cut: Resident expert Sean gives his take on Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair . Is the four-hour extended cut a "whole new film," or just for die-hard fans? Documentary Spotlight: Sharon introduces All the Empty Rooms , a "quietly devastating" short documentary by Steve Hartman and Lou Bopp that explores the lasting impact of school shootings through the rooms left behind. The Industry Shift: We also debate the changing landscape of film distribution, including Apple and Netflix moving into theatrical spaces and the rumors surrounding Netflix's potential acquisition of Warner Bros.

This week, we stepped into the afterlife with Eternity, where forever isn't just a concept, it's a choice. Joan, played by Elizabeth Olsen, finds herself facing the world's most stressful romantic dilemma: spend eternity with her longtime husband of 60 years, Larry (Miles Teller)… or reunite with her first love, who heroically died in the Korean War but is suddenly very much back in the picture (Callum Turner).Needless to say, things get complicated fast. We're breaking down the film's biggest swings, the emotional chaos, the standout performances, and of course answering the ultimate question: Is Eternity worth the trip to the theater, or is this one better saved for a cozy night on the couch?

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the long Thanksgiving weekend 2025. The plentiful offerings during the long Thanksgiving box-office weekend offer many options for your viewing pleasure. Starting with the highly enjoyable  "Zootopia 2," which brings the animal (and reptile) gang back to the big screen for the first time in 9 years. The whole family will enjoy this one! The grown-ups will have a bit more fun with "Eternity", where Elizabeth Olsen has to choose how to spend eternity and which husband she'll spend it with. It's a tough choice, but someone's gotta do it! On streaming, Mark Wahlberg's family action comedy from a couple of years ago gets a sequel called "The Family Plan 2".  If you liked the first one, the second one is more of the same bloodless action with some dad jokes thrown in there for good measure. Also available on streaming is the first four episodes of the final season of the Netflix megahit "Stranger Things.” But you will have to wait until New Year's Eve for the final final episode and the close of the saga.   The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.  Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow. The comic fantasy "Eternity" takes the romantic triangle concept to a multidimensional level. Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner star in the tale of an afterlife weigh station, where a woman must decide whether to spend eternity with her husband of many years or her first husband who died decades earlier. The concept is better than the execution, but a likable cast gives this rom-com a considerable boost. The animated farce "Zootopia 2" is a worthy successor to the 2016 hit. In this lively, funny and smartly executed tale, a fox and a rabbit uncover the mystery of why reptiles are prohibited from a city where most animals live together in relative peace. It's a family film in the best sense of the term. It's a beautifully animated offering with zany slapstick for the kids and sly cultural and political commentary for their parents. Can't wait for “Zootopia 3.” "Left-Handed Girl" is an edgy Netflix drama from Taiwan. A struggling single mom opens a food stand in a busy Taipei marketplace. She contends with the troubles of her two daughters, one a wayward teen and the other a 5-year-old kleptomaniac. Although it's the first effort of director Shih-Ching Tsou, Sean Baker of “Anora” fame is the co-writer and editor. “Left-Handed Girl” is a shrewd movie that takes viewers to places they may not expect. A solid performance by Josh O'Connor is the main attraction of “Rebuilding,” a convincing if stubbornly low-key drama about a group of people living in Fema shelters after losing everything in a devasting Colorado wildfire. “Rebuilding” is an effective, deliberately paced tale of resilience anchored by inspired casting.

The coldest place in the nation today is near Nashville, Tennessee, where temperatures in Gatlinburg hit 3 degrees. Tim explains that technically we’re still in a long-term ice age, but in a warmer “interglacial” phase that began 2.6 million years ago, with the last deep freeze ending about 12,000 years ago. The forecast for Southern California has changed — expect six straight days of rain. Tim reminisces about Disneyland’s Autopia, comparing it to how L.A. streets now look cluttered with trash, asking why people have stopped caring. Mammoth Mountain delays its opening day by one day due to the storm. On a lighter note, Elizabeth Olsen told Seth Meyers she’s a fan of Dodgers reporter David Vassegh. The show wraps with Tim thanking listeners for all the birthday cards and gifts he received. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

James Gunn Says No Darkseid For DCU, Elizabeth Olsen on MCU Return, Stranger Things Finale to Hit Big Screens

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesDuring a recent round of interviews with various comic-centric YouTube channels last week, James Gunn seemingly revealed that despite rampant speculation, his DCU is not building toward the character of Darkseid as a “big bad”. As to why he's not pursuing what many fans might argue is the obvious direction for the studio, he cited the efforts of the comic book cinematic universes that paved the way for his own, saying, "Using Darkseid as the big bad now is not necessarily the thing... because Zack did it so cool in his way and because of Thanos and Marvel." Gunn expanded his thoughts on both, acknowledging some of the shortcomings of the DCEU and detailing how similar Thanos and Darkseid are that it wouldn't feel fresh for audiences. While Marvel has yet to confirm the much-discussed Scarlet Witch's return to the MCU, in a new interview with beauty, fashion and pop culture outlet InStyle, Elizabeth Olsen reiterated that she's ready to step back into the role. "It's ridiculous," she said of making MCU movies. "We're grown people behaving like children on a playground. We're flying. We're shooting things out of our hands. And it's a character that I've gotten to return to so many times over 10 years. It's good to put her down and then I miss her, and I want her back. I'd jump at the opportunity to be in her shoes again." Last week, Netflix revealed its plans to release the feature-length finale of Stranger Things' final season in theaters, reversing course after the streamer had previously rejected the Duffer Brothers' theatrical release pitch. Theaters will screen the finale starting Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. PT — coinciding with its global Netflix debut — and continuing through Jan. 1, 2026. Disney+ will begin streaming The Fantastic Four: First Steps on Nov. 5, following the film's $521 million worldwide box office haul over the summer.Over the weekend, Sony's Crunchyroll released Chainsaw Man – The Movie, which topped the domestic box office with $17.2 million and reached $108 million globally. Black Phone 2 continued its solid run, surpassing $80 million worldwide. Regretting You debuted in third place with a better-than-expected $22.9 million, while the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere disappointed with $16.1 million in its opening weekend.Paramount Pictures is finalizing a deal to acquire Ti West's adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, with Johnny Depp set to play Ebenezer Scrooge. The film will release on November 13, 2026.Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are in talks to star in Joseph Kosinski‘s big-screen reboot of Miami Vice.Sony Pictures Animation will produce a sequel to its 2021 Oscar-nominated feature The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The film will be released on July 31, which means it's debuting right in the middle of a pretty crowded IMAX season: the live-action Moana and The Odyssey are arriving on July 10 and July 17, respectively.Disney has officially exited its partnership with the BBC on Doctor Who after two years. We really enjoyed this extremely cringey comedy, but we wish it had gone further with Ingrid and Taylor's relationship. Ingrid's behavior was unhinged, for sure; but it wasn't Saltburn level unhinged.  For those who have not seen the movie, the plot centers around Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) who moves to LA specifically to stalk the Instagram influencer (Elizabeth Olsen) that she is obsessed with. While we fully understand the point they are trying to make about parasocial relationships and social media, we can't help but root for Ingrid the entire time. She may have gone about everything in a really convoluted way, but Ingrid does love Taylor (unlike Taylor's husband, who seems to hate everything about her). It feels a lot like Killing Eve, where you can't help but root for Villanelle to “get the girl” even as she is killing people left and right.  We know one thing for sure, Ingrid Goes West Should've Been Gay. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesIt appears as though Marvel Studios much speculated film that was slated to release between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in July 2027, won't be happening after all; or at least not that July, as Disney has replaced the untitled project with a sequel to The Simpsons Movie dated for July 23, 2027. The move comes as a surprise to many Marvel fans who anticipated a possible Doctor Strange or Shang-Chi sequel to take place between the Avengers tentpoles but is in keeping with what Bob Iger and Kevin Feige have promised about a slowdown in production. Elsewhere, with Marvel Zombies premiering on Disney Plus last week, Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum teased a possible season 2, but emphasized that would be contingent on viewership and new Disney Plus subscriptions. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Olsen took the opportunity to share that although she recorded lines for the series, she doesn't remember anything about the show or plot. It was a huge week for trailers from a bevy of our favorite franchises, so lets run them down with another good old fashioned Trailer Park:Insomniac and Sony released the first gameplay trailer for Marvel's Wolverine on the PS5, which will release in fall of 2026.Lucasfilm unveiled a new trailer for Star Wars; Visions Volume 3 which also announced the cast that includes Anna Sawai, Freddie Highmore, George Takei, Harvey Guillén, Jodie Turner-Smith, Judith Light, Simu Liu, Stephanie Hsu, and Steve Buscemi. The final trailer for Jon M. Chu's Wicked: For Good released last Wednesday morning to much acclaim. And finally, a new trailer for 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash teased more of the villainous faction and stakes.Director Denis Villeneuve shed new light on his upcoming version of 007 for Amazon/MGM; sharing that the casting process will begin next year after he's completed production on Dune: Part Three for Warner Bros and that he is looking to cast a “relatively unknown” “fresh face” actor in their 20s or 30s. Additional criteria the filmmaker included is that the performer must hail from the British Isles and be male, as well as his desire to capture what Fleming called “a blunt instrument” — the lethal but “extremely dull, uninteresting man to whom things happened.” If Villeneuve and team stay true to these parameters, it potentially rules out many fan-casted favorites and seems to be in more alignment with the Broccoli family's traditions with the character than expected with new creatives in control.Mark Ronson is slated to reunite with Greta Gerwig to score her Chronicles of Narnia adaptation at Netflix. Ronson previously served as executive music producer for Gerwig's Barbie.Amazon MGM Studios‘ adaptation of Rebecca Yarros' bestselling novel Fourth Wing is closing in on a new showrunner. Notably, that new date will cover the Juneteenth holiday as well as Father's Day. It previously was dated for June 25, 2027.Comedian Bill Burr is in talks to join the cast of Aaron Sorkin and Sony Pictures' sequel to The Social Network, after Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White were officially cast. The film also has been retitled The Social Reckoning and will officially hit theaters on Oct. 9, 2026.A newly created AI “actress” named Tilly Norwood, designed by the studio Xicoia under Particle6, has reportedly drawn interest from Hollywood talent agencies.
