Here's another early 20th century poet singing a faery song. Instead of Yeats, this time it's the American poet Elinor Wylie with a poem called "Escape." When Wylie writes here of "a little house I'll build" in some magical natural setting, I can't help but think of the Irish poet's "The Lake Isle of Innisfree." I'm sending this song version of Wylie's poem out today to anyone who needs to imagine for a few minutes an escape from the problems of life. The Parlando Project takes various words (mostly literary poetry) and combines them with original music in differing styles. Episode No. 761 features artists Denzil Forrester and William Wylie. Forrester is featured in "Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaetón" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago through September 20. The exhibition explores and expands the visual, political, and spiritual histories of dancehall and reggaetón through contemporary art produced in the Caribbean, New York, London, and beyond. It was curated by Carla Acevedo-Yates with Cecilia González Godino, Iris Colburn, Nolan Jimbo, and nibia pastrana santiago. A catalogue will be published by the museum and DelMonico Books in July. It is available from Bookshop and Amazon for $60-65. The Grenada-born Forrester is best known for paintings that mine London's dub reggae culture and music clubs of the 1980s for subject and verve. The drawings he made in urban dance halls then continue to inform his work. His paintings are full of references to diaspora, the policing of Black people and culture in the UK, and dub reggae music itself. White Columns, New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City have presented solo exhibitions of his work in the US; in the UK, Nottingham Contemporary, the Jackson Foundation Gallery, Cornwall have too. His work is in the collection of museums such as the Tate, London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Wylie's new photobook is titled "The Eighty-Eight: Photographs from a Japanese Pilgrimage." It features pictures from Wylie's experience fo the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a trail that vists 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) on the island of Shikoku. The book was published by George F. Thompson Publishing in association with the Center for the Study of Place, and features an essay by Pico Iyer. Amazon offers it for about $42. This is Wylie's seventh book. His pictures are in the collection of museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Yale University Art Gallery. Air date: June 4, 2026.

The Microsoft offices in downtown Houston initialized something in 2010 that its founders never intended to scale. Michael Farnum and his team triggered a regional conference with 120 attendees, built for the Texas cyber community. No grand ambitions. No national aspirations. Just a gathering for people who knew each other, wanted to learn together, and could afford to show up without corporate sponsorship covering a $2,700 entry fee.Meanwhile, Philip Wylie was running monthly meetups in Denton, traveling constantly, and discovering that building community meant something different than building an audience. The former professional wrestler turned pentester had launched DC940, authored bestselling books, and established himself as a global keynote speaker. But by fall 2024, the logistics became unsustainable. He stepped down from his DefCon group leadership role.That same night, walking away from the venue, an idea crystallized. The Dallas-Fort Worth area housed one of the world's largest cybersecurity communities, yet lacked a proper hacker conference. So Wylie sent a text message to Farnum. No expectations beyond advice. Within weeks, they had formalized a partnership that would bring CyberHackCon to the Plano Event Center, the same venue that hosted DalHackCon two decades earlier.What started as Houston's 15-year regional experiment had evolved into a national conference ecosystem. Companies were bypassing Black Hat and RSA entirely, sending whole teams to what was becoming CyberSecCon instead. 4-7-26 Tonight we're getting back together with Carlos Herrera, owner and Meadmaker at Texas Longhouse Meadery in Wylie, Texas. Carlos is the owner and mead maker of Texas Longhouse Meadery, where Nordic inspiration and Texas craft meet in the glass. With over two dozen awards and a passion for building community through mead, Carlos is also the President of the Texas Mead Association, working to grow the mead industry and bring more people into the Longhouse. Carlos, an Army Veteran, a Paramedic, and a Diplomatic Security Specialist, started learning how to make mead from an outgoing mentor. After learning the basics from his mentor, Carlos was injured at work and was sent home to recover. While home recovering from multiple surgeries, he set out to improve his new hobby. After many hours reading, researching, and experimenting Carlos fell in love with mead and really started to hone his craft of mead making. Miss Elkins's fourth grade class at Wiley Elementary is conducting a book drive to collect books for underfunded schools. They have a goal of 5,000 books and are currently at 3,500. The collected books will be donated to an organization called Making Spirits Bright, which distributes them to underfunded schools through free book fairs. "Fiat Lux". From the living breath of Genesis to the Kikuyu's sacred seed, from the Greek cosmic egg to the Sulawesi tale of the earth-shaking boar scratching its itch — across countless traditions, humankind has always sought to explain the origins of the cosmos. Perhaps fewer people are aware that humanity has also tried to explain the origins of technological life, with ‘technology' here meaning the discovery of activities that enabled progress: agriculture, the construction of more complex structures, brewing, and the domestication of animals. The myths, or stories, that describe how humankind, often with the help of divine or supernatural beings, came to acquire such knowledge are known as "civilisation myths".Western scholars (ethnographers, anthropologists, linguists, and archaeologists alike) were often fascinated by the collection of such stories from remote or so-called ‘exotic' places. These narratives were variously published in richly illustrated children's books or in dense and rather austere academic volumes. Among those who ventured into this field was Nicholas J. Allen, who explored both physical and conceptual terrains that were ‘new' only to Western audiences - for those who lived there, they were part of everyday life and cultural heritage.During his fieldwork in the Solukhumbu District (Nepali: सोलुखुम्बु जिल्ला [solukʰumbu]; Sherpa: ཤར་ཁུམ་བུ་རྫོང་།; Wylie: shar khum bu dzong), Allen studied the Rai, a division of the Kiranti peoples inhabiting the middle hills of eastern Nepal, and in particular the Thulung, one of more than a dozen Rai subtribes, each with its own distinct language. His attention was drawn to the peculiarities of the Thulung, which set them apart from other Rai groups. Through comparative linguistic andmythological analysis, Allen hypothesised that, although the Thulung had been influenced by Hindu immigrants, they showed virtually no trace of Tibetan or Buddhist influence and were hence the result of very ancient cultural heritage pre- dating Buddhism in Nepal. Yet, this observation was only the starting point of our own exploration, not its goal.In our work, we turned to the Jaw-Khliw cycle, a civilisation myth that culminates in a wedding. We sought to express this story through sound, following Khakcilik on his journey as he learns to build a house, prepare a swidden, and brew beer thanks to a woman called Wayelungma. His path is accompanied by the sounds of animals known to inhabit elevations between 1,400 and 2,000 m near Mukli, where the original soundscape was recorded in 1970. These include the dark-sided flycatcher, ultramarine flycatcher, Nepal fulvetta, and wild boar (the latter also mentioned in another of Allen's myths).The soundscape does not mirror the narrative point by point; instead, it employs evocative sounds to express key moments in the story, such as the Nepali gong introducing the three siblings, or the shimmering textures that evoke the magic of Wayelungma. We did not introduce one sad moment, as our intention was not to recount loss, but to dwell on the wonder of knowledge and of learning, with the aim of nourishing soul and intellect. The journey of Khakcilik and Wayelungma culminates in a marriage, for which Nicholas's 1970 recording was used. The names and lives of those who married and celebrated their love and were recorded by Nicholas may now be lost to history, but, in a romantic (and perhaps slightly naïve) gesture, we wished to honour love as one of the possible driving forces of civilisation itself — a celebration of the journey of Khakcilik and Wayelungma. Jaw and Khliw, the greater and lesser hornbill, try to kill their younger brother Khakcilik. Destroying an effigy of him, they fly off. After a quarrel the younger is eaten by an owl, then resuscitated. Meanwhile, Khakcilik, who lives by fishing, repeatedly catches a stone which he eventually deposits in his house. The stone, really a woman called Wayelungma or Nagimo, sweeps and cooks for him while he is out until one day, following advice, he hides behind a winnowing fan and captures her as his wife. Wayelungma instructs him how to build a house but in the process their first child is crushed under the central pillar. Also under her instruction and with her help he prepares a swidden, brews beer from its grain and invites, and when this fails, entices, his sisters to return home for the wedding. Helping others was just what her family did. So when life flipped the script and she found herself needing help? That was hard. “We’ve always been the ones giving,” she said. “To be on the other side of it? It’s rough.” Edwards, 50, had been juggling two jobs, raising her teenage sister, and caring for her mom, whose health was failing. Then came the rent hike—73%—and suddenly, they were living out of their car. What came next was Families First, a nonprofit that doesn’t just help—it acts. Edwards calls her caseworker, Angela Wylie, her “angel.” Wylie helped her find housing, food, and job resources. Edwards is still in a hotel, still searching for stability, but she’s hopeful. STORY 3: Ethics board dismisses complaint over Holtkamp's transit videos Gwinnett County Commissioner Matthew Holtkamp got some relief Tuesday when an ethics panel ruled he didn’t violate county rules by filming a video on a Ride Gwinnett bus urging voters to reject the 2024 T-SPLOST referendum. “I’ve been completely vindicated,” Holtkamp said. “This had no merit, and it’s unfortunate we had to waste resources on it.” The complaint, filed by a resident in Holtkamp’s district, claimed he improperly used county property for personal advocacy. But Holtkamp argued he paid his bus fare and had a friend—not county staff—film the video. The ethics board agreed, saying his actions didn’t break the rules. We’ll be right back Break 2: Kia Mall of Georgia - GCPL Passport STORY 4: Gwinnett County, Lawrenceville get federal funds for water and police projects Gwinnett County and Lawrenceville just scored over $2 million in federal funding for water upgrades and public safety improvements. U.S. Rep. David Scott announced the approval, with $1.09 million earmarked for Snellville’s water infrastructure—upgrading a booster station’s electrical system and adding backup power—and $1.03 million heading to the Lawrenceville Police Department. The police funds? They’ll cover new patrol cars, trauma kits, breaching tools, and other gear to boost safety for both officers and the public. “This $2.12 million investment will make a real difference,” Scott said. “Better water, safer streets—I’m proud to deliver for Gwinnett.” STORY 5: Dacula Boys Basketball Seizes Region Lead with Victory at Central Gwinnett Dacula’s boys basketball team just keeps rolling. With a nail-biting 60-57 win over Central Gwinnett on Tuesday, the Falcons snagged first place in Region 8-AAAAAA and stretched their win streak to 11 games. Now sitting at 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the region, Dacula handed Central its first region loss, dropping them to 5-1. Case Presley led the charge with 21 points, eight boards, and three assists. Josh Brown notched a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds), while Kenny LaRue chipped in 10 points and some clutch playmaking. FALCONS: The Atlanta Falcons officially introduced Matt Ryan as their new president of football on Tuesday, and honestly, it feels like a full-circle moment. Brandon Wylie, who was inducted into the International Lineman Hall of Fame in 2023, is the guest for Part 2 of our Hall of Famers series. He has more than 27 years of experience in the power line industry and currently serves as a regional director of training for Quanta Services in the Southeast. In this role, he leads workforce development, safety and leadership training initiatives across multiple operating companies. Before joining Quanta, he served as vice president of apprenticeships with Northwest Lineman College (NLC) and director of training and safety at Electric Cities of Georgia, where he spent more than 15 years designing and leading training programs for lineworkers and safety professionals. He has served as a chair of the APPA Safety Committee, vice chair of the National Association of Journeyman Linemen and a board member of the International Lineman's Museum and Hall of Fame. He's a certified utility safety professional, and he's proud to be a second-generation lineman. He's also the writer of "Highline Cowboy," a song inspired by his life as a lineman that was later featured in "Storm Soldiers" and "Life on the Line," starring John Travolta. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Kyle Wiley, Assistant Professor of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Texas at El Paso, about how social and traumatic stressors during pregnancy become biologically embedded and shape maternal and infant health. Kyle shares his path into biological anthropology and discusses his biosocial research on perinatal health disparities in the United States and Brazil. We explore his work on interpersonal violence during pregnancy in São Paulo, Brazil, focusing on how trauma affects maternal and infant cortisol regulation and what this means for fetal programming and intergenerational health. We also discuss his recent research on pica among Latina pregnant women, which takes a novel approach by examining stress hormones and inflammation rather than micronutrient deficiencies.
