In April 2005, Ha Smith, a prominent Vietnamese-American fortune teller, and her adult daughter, Anita Vo, were found brutally murdered in Smith's home. They had been beaten and stabbed. The killer had stolen cash, jewelry, and credit cards, and poured white paint over the victims' heads and hands, a detail that initially led police to consider that it had been a ritualistic killing. The Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico has a pretty unusual spiral staircase – it winds round and round like a DNA helix, and has no visible center “bar” for support. But the story of the staircase's origins is even stranger.
