I'm very pleased to bring you my interview with guitarist Brad Gillis of the legendary 80s rock band Night Ranger. Brad was kind enough to tell me about the making of the excellent new album ATBPO (an acronym for "and the band played on," which is how Night Ranger responded to the COVID-19 pandemic last year). With live venues shut down, the band started writing via Zoom calls and eventually put together a killer record that just came out earlier this month. Brad also told me about his early guitar heroes, playing on the rock and metal famine relief record "Stars" by Hear N' Aid in the 80s, making videos, the gear he used on ATBPO, and more. Check out the new album and I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. Find out more about Night Ranger at their website. I appreciate you listening! First up on the show, it's Jack Blades from Night Ranger. Their new record comes out Friday. It's called ATBPO, or And The Band Played On. He tells me about the unusual writing process due to covid and gives a taste of what the album sounds like. He talks about playing with Corey Taylor a few weeks back, some Damn Yankee's talk and the story of Prince and an awards show. Then, it's the host of the Appetite for Distortion podcast, Brando. He went to the opening night of the GNR tour and gives me a full recap, as well as how Wolfgang Van Halen sounded. Today I sit down with Bay Area legend Jack Blades of Night Ranger and dive deep into his musical history. Jack has been killing it for years starting all the way back in the 70's in his Rubicon days playing Cal Jam 2. I was a young kid hanging out at rock clubs in the Bay Area watching bands like Night Ranger, Y&T, Huey Lewis and The News, Eric Martin and Gamma just kill it on stage nightly. The Bay Area was rich with Music and I was very lucky to grow up in that time period. Night Ranger has a new record out this Friday called ATBPO and I highly recommend it. Do yourself a favor and go back and listen to all of their records and loose your mind on all their killer songs. Thanks for tuning in. DDR
The band began writing the album in early 2020, amid the onset of the global pandemic. After narrowing down the song selection and tightening them up to their well-known rock ‘n roll sound, the band hit the studio, although separately, due to the times we are in. Throughout "ATBPO", we hear Night Ranger continuing their hot streak that kicked off with 2011's "Somewhere In California". Ten years on, and two highly acclaimed albums later, "High Road" and "Don't Let Up", the band's latest studio work shows them still burning with that high octane hard rock energy they are known for. Night Ranger has always had a knack for killer melodies, intricate instrumentation, and captivating lyrics; "ATBPO" delivers all of that and more.
