Viola Kanevsky, OD, was born in the former Soviet Union, but after a family “adventure” they settled down in New York City when she was a child. Like most optometrists, she worked in several modes of practice early on, but today, she owns a specialty pediatrics practice in Manhattan. She loves seeing children and considers it “play time” rather than an exam. Her advice for working with kids is to think outside of the box, be patient, and follow their lead. She shares her tips on how to fit infants and small children with specialty contact lenses (psst... The secret is keeping the parent calm). Her practice does not take vision plans or medical plans (other than Medicare) because she wants to be able to prescribe what is best for each patient. She also discusses her family's passion project called “The Ship of Tolerance.” You may have seen her witty posts and comments as a group expert in ODs on Facebook, but now it's time to get to know Dr. Viola Kanevsky better. Episode 42 of Season 5 kicked off at 19h00 on 20 Oct 2022. The show was live on Rebel Rock Radio and made up for last week's disaster after the lightning strike. Apologies again for that little abortion, it's nice to be back in control and with a new inverter to keep the load shedding at bay. The show kicked off with Accept and a track called “What's Done is Done' off The Rise of Chaos. Mark Tornillo on vocals and Wolf Hoffman on lead guitar. Then we took a listen to a band that was new to me called Dead City Ruins and a track called 'Preacher'. They've got four albums out and they hail from Australia. The classic rock flag flew for a while while we heard from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and ACDC before chilling to Audioslave with ‘Like a Stone' and then ‘Rats' from Pearl Jam. 'Like a Stone' hit a billion YouTube views this week so that was worth celebrating. We also checked out KISS with the seldom-played 'Do You Love Me'. This was off Kiss Alive IV and has Peter Criss on drums and Tommy Thayer on guitar, check out the interview I did with Tommy Thayer in the podcast list on 28 Nov 2019. What a nice guy. The Johnny Kongos classic 'Tokoloshe Man', recorded back in 1971, sounded great and stands up well as did another South African classic from a band called Big Sky. We got into the heavier stuff with Motorhead and UFO and from there it was guitar time and a track from White Lion called 'Fight To Survive' featuring the amazing Vito Bratta on guitar. The story of Mike Slammer's involvement with Warrant and Joey Allen, was briefly covered then we got into some metal courtesy of Claymorean and South Africa's own Infanteria out of Cape Town and some more local music with Jasper Dan and Black Bone Nation. This week the Punk came from the USA in the form of Green Day with 'Welcome to Paradise' off 1991's Kerplunk. We also heard a track, relevant to the whole world right now called "The Economy Is Suffering' by Anti-Flag. Dave Hause with his track 'Bearing Down' off Kick was a highlight for me and is pretty deep. In This Moment showed us all how good a rave could be if Maria Brink was running the show and we went heavy again with Parkway Drive and Megadeth. the show closed with Lamb of God and a track called 'Ditch' off their new album Omens. I said that we would play out with Slipknot but then changed my mind and did the LOG instead. Artists featured: Accept, Cancer Bats, Dead City Ruins, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, Black Label Society, Joe Bonamassa, Audioslave, Pearl Jam, Godsmack, KISS, Judas Priest, Johnny Kongos, Big Sky, Motörhead, Warrant, Anti-Flag, Green Day, Claymorean, Infanteria, Black Bone Nation, Jasper Dan, Crowded House, Dave Hause, In This Moment, Marilyn Manson, Parkway Drive, Megadeth, Tribute To Leslie West, Wonderboom, UK Subs, My Chemical Romance, Lamb of GodThe Story of Rock and Roll. Ideal Para Llevarte O Regalar Productos Del Podcats De Ivoox.

Right out of the gates off of Sunset Strip with their debut album, 1989's "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich", D.R.F.S.R., also a song on the album. First single off the album, was "Down Boys". But the second single was the ballad "Heaven"; it went to #2. It was denied the #1 position by Milli Vanilli's "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You", so in hindsight, if the Grammy can be stripped from Milli Vanilli, seems that Heaven should be rewarded with the #1 spot. The album spawned other hit singes as well, "Big Talk" and another ballad "Sometimes She Cries". And a fan favorite, "32 Pennies" in a Ragu jar... The band consisted of former Plain Jane band members Jani Lane on vocals and Steven Sweet on drums. Along with Joey Allen on lead guitar, Erik Turner on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Dixon on bass. The following year in 1990, they would release their follow-up to "D.R.F.S.R.", "Cherry Pie". The title song "Cherry Pie" is the song that would define the band, even bigger than the success of "Heaven". The song was a last minute addition, due to record management insistence to have a new sort of 'rock anthem' added to the album for marketability of the new record. So, Jani sits down and pens the track in 15 minutes. This is one of the rare cases of a Music Exec being right, but it was Jani's brilliance that made this tongue in cheek song such a mega hit! The other bandmates weren't even around the studio at the time, so it was recorded like much of the album and like "D.R.F.S.R.", with studio musicians... this I just learned. And they even work in the title to their previous album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich"! Although, it is commonly known that the 'trained professional' reference is to none other than C.C. DeVille of Poison. CC is responsible for those licks and solo in Cherry Pie. This didn't help much with all of their comparison's of sound and appearance to Poison or due to the fact that they were touring partners. But "Cherry Pie" would be the song that Jani would come to resent and hate. It you google "Jani Lane ha", "tes Cherry Pie" comes up and autofills in the search bar for "Jani Lane hates Cherry Pie". He regretted writing the song, because he felt that it delegitimized him as a songwriter. That and that we would be remembered for this one song, "Cherry Pie". He shared his disdain about the song on a VHI interview, by saying "I could shoot myself in the fucking head for writing that song". He hated that he would be known for that song and be forever known as, the "Cherry Pie guy". He regretted writting the song, because he felt that it delegitimized him as a songwriter. In this episode we are joined by Warrant guitarist, Joey Allen. We talk about Warrant’s current touring, what Robert Mason brings to the fold, when we can expect a follow up to Rockaholic, possible solo music from Joey, our mutual love of Dog Eat Dog, how he started working for Pearl Drums, the weirdest ‘thing’ he has autographed, and a lot more. There is some slight feedback early on for about a minute, but once that clears up it is smooth sailing. The back end of the interview with Joey features a soundtrack of some kick ass beats from Warrant drummer Steven Sweet during his soundcheck. Before we get into the talk with Joey we discuss new music from Sevendust, The Winery Dogs, Trivium, and Children of Bodom. We also play a track from a great Oklahoma independent band, Dryvr. Thanks for listening, and please share!
Joey Allen (Warrant) gives us a full overview of his career. He discusses the early days of Warrant, and their heyday in the late 80's. He also shares why he left the band after Dog Eat Dog, what he did in the years before his return, reflects on Jani Lane, and looks forward to the next cd, and when that will be recorded.
Join me as I have one of my favorite axemen of all time Warrant's Joey Allen as he discussed the LA Music scene when it was popping and Warrant's mercurial rise to fame and the effects of grunge, the 90's for an 80's band and much much more. You can find him along with the rest of Warrant on Facebook and Twitter and you know you can find Earl Skakel on there too!!! Please enjoy as Joey is a fantastic player and has a lot of great stories on the rise and fall of both bands and individuals from the era we all know and love!
