“You'll be divorced, alone, and flaccid…” Let's go back a few years, back to a time when we were young and impressionable and just starting out on our respective metal odysseys as fans and purveyors of all things metal, including (but not limited to) the hard rock of our childhood years in the late 70's to the plethora of NWOBHM, thrash, and other classic metal bands we discovered during our teen years in the late 80's and early 90's. Back to a time when wearing a newly purchased tour shirt from a show the night before to school the next day was a sacred badge of honor, a time when local bands gave out flyers for shows that included “treasure map” style instructions for locating the venue, and a time when we each had our own personal attaché case containing the cassettes we'd recently procured (or otherwise came into possession of) on our unquenchable thirst and unending quest for anything and everything metal. Imagine what “Miss Piggy with laryngitis” might sound like and remember to never do people dirty, because just like Pepperidge Farms, karma remembers. Get ready for a “crombination” of “skythes…or scythes”, discover some of the most absurdly talented drummers and bassists in the world today, and prepare to behold one of, if not the best, thrash bands from the local scene back in the day when you JOIN US as we travel back in time to THE METAL DAYS OF YORE: OUR FORMATIVE METAL YEARS. Welcome back to The Metal Maniacs Podcast, the loudest podcast in the pit, hosted by your riff-obsessed guides Jay Ingersoll and Modd. For Episode 94, we're throwing ourselves into the hurricane that is thrash metal—a genre born of rebellion, raised on speed, and forged in the fires of punk and NWOBHM.This is not just a list of greatest hits. This is a deep dive, a dissection, and a love letter to one of the most influential and enduring subgenres in all of heavy metal. If you've ever air-guitared to Slayer, circle-pitted to Exodus, or worn out the rewind button on Kill ‘Em All, this one's for you.
In the first installment of a multi-part series, I chat to my good friend, and sometimes co-host, George Silano about the NWOBHM stalwarts, Angel Witch. Throughout this series of episodes, we'll be delving deep into the discography of this influential band, who are sometimes (perhaps unfairly) deemed a one-hit, or one-album wonder. We'll make our way through their releases chronologically, and as such, this episode starts with the 1978 Demo. Clips featured in episode: 1. Angel Witch - "Angel Witch" - Angel Witch (1980) 2. Angel Witch - "Baphomet" - 1978 Demo (1978) 3. Angel Witch - "White Witch" - 1978 Demo (1978) 4. Angel Witch - "The Sorceror" - Demo 1979 (1979) Follow me: @feckinmetalcast on Twitter https://x.com/feckinmetalcast @feckinmetal on BlueSky https://bsky.app/profile/feckinmetal.bsky.social

High and Dry: Def Leppard's Gateway from NWOBHM to Arena Rock KingsBefore Hysteria took over MTV and Pyromania lit up the charts, Def Leppard were loud, raw, and hungry. Their 1981 album, High and Dry, was the crucial turning point—bridging the grit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) with the polished, hook-laden sound that would dominate ‘80s rock radio. But does it get the recognition it deserves? This week, we go deep into Def Leppard's unsung classic—breaking down the ferocious dual-guitar attack, the emergence of the power ballad, and why this album is the missing link between underground metal and stadium rock dominance. If you love AC/DC, Scorpions, Van Halen, or Judas Priest, this episode is for you.

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts!Songs this week include:Blue Murder – “We All Fall Down” from Nothin' But Trouble (1993)Streetfighter – “She's No Angel” from Lightnin' To The Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection (2005)Tygers Of Pan Tang – “Blackjack” from Spellbound (1981)John Sykes – “Pride And Joy” from Crossfire: A Salute To Stevie Ray (1996)Derek Sherinian – “God Of War” from Mythology (2004)Thin Lizzy – “Cowboy Song” from One Night Only (2000)John Sykes – “Cautionary Warning” from 20th Century (1997)Blue Murder – “Still Of The Night” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Blue Murder – “Jelly Roll” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

fWotD Episode 2822: New wave of British heavy metal Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 25 January 2025 is New wave of British heavy metal. The new wave of British heavy metal (commonly abbreviated as NWOBHM) was a nationwide musical movement that started in England in the mid-1970s and achieved international attention by the early 1980s. Editor Alan Lewis coined the term for an article by Geoff Barton in a May 1979 issue of the British music newspaper Sounds to describe the emergence of new heavy metal bands in the mid to late 1970s, during the period of punk rock's decline and the dominance of new wave music.Although encompassing diverse styles inherited from rock music, the music of the NWOBHM is best remembered for drawing on the heavy metal of the 1970s and infusing it with the intensity of punk rock to produce fast and aggressive songs. The DIY attitude of the new metal bands led to the spread of raw-sounding, self-produced recordings and a proliferation of independent record labels. Song lyrics were usually about escapist themes, such as mythology, fantasy, horror and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. The NWOBHM began as an underground phenomenon growing in parallel to punk and largely ignored by the media. It was only through the promotion of rock DJ Neal Kay and Sounds' campaigning that it reached the public consciousness and gained radio airplay, recognition and success in the UK. The movement involved mostly young, white, male and working-class musicians and fans, who suffered the hardships brought on by rising unemployment for years after the 1973–75 recession. As a reaction to their bleak reality, they created a community separate from mainstream society to enjoy each other's company and their favourite loud music. The NWOBHM was heavily criticised for the excessive hype generated by local media in favour of mostly talentless musicians. Nonetheless, it generated a renewal in the genre of heavy metal music and furthered the progress of the heavy metal subculture, whose updated behavioural and visual codes were quickly adopted by metal fans worldwide after the spread of the music to continental Europe, North America and Japan.By some estimates, the movement spawned as many as a thousand heavy metal bands, but only a few survived the advent of MTV and the rise of the more commercial glam metal in the second half of the 1980s. Among them, Iron Maiden and Def Leppard became superstars, while Motörhead and Saxon also had considerable success. Other groups, such as Diamond Head, Venom and Raven, while reaching limited chart success, never achieved popularity of the above-mentioned bands, but were a major influence on the successful extreme metal subgenres of the mid/late 1980s and 1990s. Many bands from the NWOBHM reunited in the 2000s and remained active through live performances and new studio albums. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Saturday, 25 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see New wave of British heavy metal on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Danielle.

Kicking off 2025 with an interview with John Gallagher of Raven. They have a new EP coming out on February 14th. It features five new songs and three live tracks, all from different decades. He told me about the songs, and one he said is the heaviest song Raven has ever done. John also told me they're well into working on new music, so it sounds like they have a lot of material ready to go. We discussed their early tours, taking Metallica on the raid, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the bands they influenced. As far as the NWOBHM was concerned, that era didn't last long, but it did produce some legendary bands. You can watch this interview on the RIFF TV section of wrif.com to see some of John's classic basses, as he pulled a couple of them out. It's a great way to kick off 2025 on Talkin' Rock!

Gunter gleiben glauchen globen. We're talking about the NWOBHM legends, Def Leppard! You read that right...forgotten by too many, this band was around, and heavily involved in, that magical time that was defining the term "Heavy Metal". Welcome old buddy and new co-host Markisan to the Endless Metal Podcast! As previously discovered in an earlier episode, Markisan listens to more metal than any other human being on planet earth. He's also a kind hearted fellow cat lover and all around great guy, so we are thrilled he will be joining the brotherhood! Like so many middle-aged metal fans we love Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, and other gods of metal. But our typical sonic assaults of choice are of the more death metal variety--where inhuman growls and torn throat rage--rule the infernal roost. Here, we step away from the mayhem and madness, and dive into six albums released this year with ALL clean vocals. Needless to say, there are many phenomenal vocalists carrying the NWOBHM torch and its endless legacy into 2024. Is Nü Metal the most divisive music subgenre of the 1990s? It sure seems to generate a lot of hate, but is also beloved by millions of fans. Eschewing the traditions of classic NWOBHM bands (guitar solos, leather, fist-pumping athems), Nü Metal rose from the same underground that embraced both hip-hop and mosh pits, with its own style (baggy pants, tracksuits, baseball caps) more reminiscent of Run D.M.C. than Judas Priest. In the same way that punk was a response to the bloated stylings of 70s corporate and progressive rock, Nü Metal stripped away the overindulgence of previous metal incarnations and focused on rhythm and catharsis. Bands like Korn, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park wrote about the dark underbelly of suburban home life, with varying musical approaches, while others like Slipknot, Mudvayne, and Static-X added a layer of theatrical presentation in their looks. We revisit not just the Nü Metal period, but also what came before it, bands like Anthrax and Public Enemy teaming up, the alternative approaches of Primus, Faith No More, and Rage Against The Machine, and explore the looks, the sounds and legacy of Nü Metal. Jana and Mark start the show with a guest and chocolate! Mike Rawsthorne joins the show again and this time we're talking about his 3 man NWOBHM band, Crisis. Crisis has been melting fans faces off since 1980. Mike takes us back to how it all began and what the band is doing now.
Welcome to today's episode, where we dive into the explosive year of 1986—a year many consider the greatest in the history of thrash metal. We'll explore the rise of "The Big 4 of Thrash," the decline of punk (as well as hardcore starting to morph into crossover) as the dominant subgenre for disaffected youth, and how metal, especially thrash metal, began to roar into the mainstream. This was a year when Metallica gained significant exposure by touring with Ozzy Osbourne, and just a year after Motley Crue catapulted into the record-selling stratosphere. The "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" had established itself, transitioning from the "new" phenomenon to a major force in the arena circuit in the U.S. and beyond. ### Was 1986 the Greatest Year of Thrash Metal? #### The Rise of "The Big 4 of Thrash" **Metallica:** - 1986 saw the release of Metallica's seminal album *Master of Puppets*, which is often hailed as one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The album's complex compositions, aggressive sound, and critical lyrics elevated thrash metal to new artistic heights. How did *Master of Puppets* influence the thrash metal genre and its acceptance in the mainstream? - Metallica's tour with Ozzy Osbourne in 1986 was a pivotal moment for the band, exposing them to a broader audience. How did this tour help Metallica and thrash metal gain mainstream recognition? **Megadeth:** - Megadeth released their influential album *Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?* in 1986. The album's politically charged lyrics and technical prowess set it apart. How did Megadeth contribute to the evolution of thrash metal with this release? - Discuss the impact of Dave Mustaine's previous association with Metallica and how it shaped Megadeth's sound and rivalry with Metallica. **Slayer:** - Slayer's *Reign in Blood* also debuted in 1986, known for its brutal speed, intensity, and dark themes. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album pushed the boundaries of thrash metal. What was the significance of *Reign in Blood* in establishing Slayer's reputation in the metal community? - How did the album's controversial themes and aggressive style influence the thrash metal genre? **Anthrax:** - Anthrax released *Spreading the Disease* in late 1985 and followed it up with *Among the Living* in early 1987. Although slightly outside of 1986, these albums were critical in shaping their influence in the thrash scene. What role did Anthrax play in the diversification and popularization of thrash metal? #### The Decline of Punk as a Dominant Subgenre **Punk's Waning Influence:** - By 1986, punk's initial wave had largely dissipated, giving way to more diverse subgenres and a shift in youth culture. How did the punk movement's decline create a space for thrash metal to rise? - Discuss how the ethos of punk—its DIY spirit and rebellious attitude—continued to influence thrash metal bands, even as punk's mainstream presence waned. **Anarchy vs. Apathy:** - Punk had often been associated with anarchy and a rejection of societal norms, but by the mid-1980s, some elements of the punk scene had turned towards apathy and malaise. How did this shift affect punk's relevance to youth culture? - Compare and contrast how thrash metal's more structured rebellion and complex musicianship offered a new outlet for disaffected youth. #### Thrash Metal's Mainstream Breakthrough **Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne Tour:** - Metallica's tour with Ozzy Osbourne in 1986 was a significant boost for the band. How did Ozzy's endorsement and the exposure from the tour help solidify thrash metal's presence in the mainstream? - Discuss the broader impact of established metal acts like Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden embracing and supporting the thrash metal movement. **Motley Crue's Success:** - Motley Crue's rise to fame after opening for Ozzy Osbourne in 1985 set a precedent for other metal bands. How did this success pave the way for thrash metal bands to achieve similar mainstream breakthroughs? - In what ways did the success of glam metal acts like Motley Crue contrast with the rise of thrash metal, and how did these two subgenres coexist in the mid-1980s? #### The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) **Cementing the Legacy:** - By 1986, the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (NWOBHM) had firmly established itself. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard were now major arena acts. How did NWOBHM influence the development of thrash metal? - Discuss the transition of NWOBHM bands from new and emerging acts to established, influential forces in the global metal scene. **Cross-Pollination of Genres:** - How did the NWOBHM's success in the early 1980s pave the way for the thrash metal bands of the mid-1980s? - In what ways did NWOBHM and thrash metal bands influence each other musically and culturally? ### Conclusion 1986 was indeed a landmark year for thrash metal, marked by iconic releases from "The Big 4" and significant mainstream breakthroughs. This year saw the decline of punk's dominance, as thrash metal emerged as the new voice of disaffected youth, blending punk's rebellious spirit with metal's technical prowess. As the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" transitioned into established arena acts, thrash metal began to carve out its own place in the mainstream, setting the stage for its enduring influence on the music landscape. This week heed the call of the sumo wrestling, battle-axe-wielding, baby seal-faced man! All hail Johnny the Mighty Tior!!! Yep, it's another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We're talking about a seminal New Wave Of “Not So” British Heavy band turned Power Metal trendsetters: RIOT! Infamous as much for horrible album cover visuals and weird heavy metal mascot, Riot is a true heavy metal tour de force that is still kicking ass in 2024. We focus our listening on the first half of their career from their start in 1977 until their transition to pure power metal in 1990. They were always slightly ahead of the curve and trends, but never achieved the success of many of their peers or bands they influenced. We think RIOT shoulda been huge!!!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode covers a band clearly in the Lost category for most and forgotten for others. As always, we hope that we turn you on to something new. You can check out the documentary we referenced several times during the show here: three-part documentary: Riot – Fight or Fall, available here on Youtube Songs this week include:Riot – “Warrior” from Rock City (1977)Riot – “Road Racin'” from Narita (1979)Riot – “Don't Hold Back” from Fire Down Under (1981)Riot – “Loanshark” from Restless Breed (1982)Riot - “Born In America” from Born In America (1983)Riot – “Thundersteel” from Thundersteel (1988)Riot – “Little Miss Death” from The Privilege Of Power (1990)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
