In this extraordinary episode of Takin’ A Walk, host Buzz Knight sits down with Oscar and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Rick Korn for an intimate conversation about the power of music to transform lives,.Rick’s latest documentary, “Cat’s in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives,” explores one of the most iconic and emotionally resonant songs in American music history, revealing how Harry Chapin’s timeless classic continues to influence musicians, families, and communities decades after its release. Rick Korn has built his remarkable career around creating socially conscious documentaries that don’t just document history—they inspire people to take action and make a difference in the world. Rick has dedicated himself to telling inspiring music stories that illuminate the intersection of artistry and activism, showing how musicians can leverage their platforms to address society’s most pressing challenges. His work with legendary artists and humanitarian causes has positioned him as one of the most important documentary filmmakers working in the music space today. The conversation begins with Rick sharing the origin story of his deep connection to Harry Chapin, the singer-songwriter whose commitment to fighting hunger and poverty was as legendary as his musical talent. Harry Chapin wasn’t just a hitmaker who gave us “Cat’s in the Cradle,” “Taxi,” “W.O.L.D.,” and other chart-topping songs—he was a tireless activist who gave away an estimated half of his concert earnings to charitable causes. In 1975, Harry Chapin co-founded World Hunger Year, which later became WHYHunger, an organization that continues to fight food insecurity in 24 countries around the world, affecting millions of lives every month. His impact on the philanthropic world was so profound that he received the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists to use their fame for good. Rick explains how this song, written by Harry’s wife Sandy, became more than just a hit record—it became a cultural mirror that reflected back to America the consequences of misplaced priorities, the pain of missed opportunities with loved ones, and the universal struggle between career ambitions and family responsibilities. The song’s narrative about a father too busy to spend time with his son, only to find that same son too busy for him in later years, struck a chord that continues to resonate more than fifty years after its release. What makes Rick’s latest documentary so compelling is the diverse range of voices he assembled to explore the song’s impact. Billy Joel provides fascinating insights into the craft of songwriting and how “Cat’s in the Cradle” achieved something rare in popular music—a perfect marriage of melody, lyric, and universal truth that transcends generations. Billy Joel’s own relationship with Harry Chapin as a mentor and friend adds emotional depth to his reflections on the song’s enduring power. He discusses how opening for Harry Chapin’s band taught him not just about performing, but about using music as a force for positive change in the world. Rick shares the story of interviewing Darryl DMC McDaniels and being struck by the raw honesty of his reaction to “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Despite coming from a completely different musical tradition, DMC connected deeply with the song’s message about fatherhood, presence, and the choices we make about how we spend our time. The documentary also features Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, whose interview began with him declaring his dislike for acoustic music, only to confess that “Cat’s in the Cradle” was the one song that broke through his resistance. This moment perfectly illustrates the song’s unique power—it can reach people who might otherwise never connect with folk-influenced storytelling music.Support the show: https://takinawalk.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Show Notes Episode 259: “We're Not Gonna Take It” This week Host Dave Bledsoe puts a Twisted Sister pin on his uniform and drunkenly shouts at himself in the bathroom mirror just to feel like someone else is with him. (The man is desperately lonely and drinking too much. You know, just normal Dave stuff) On the show this week we travel back to 1985 to examine the Parents Music Resource Council, an issue so unimportant and trivial to the modern context that it should distract you for a good half hour from all the crazy shit in the world. (You're welcome) Along the way we meet the White Wives of Washington who decided it was their job to censor artists. (They were the Karen's of the 1980s) We introduce to you to each of the Filthy Fifteen the list of songs the PMRC deemed so vile and offensive that children must be protected from them at all cost. (God forbid they learned about getting off from Cyndi Lauper!) We hear from the artists who defended the list, even though some of the Metal songs are just BAD songs. (Not evil, just really poorly written.) Finally, we learn why Tipper Gore felt it was SO important we have warning labels on music. (Hint, it was so parents didn't need to talk to their kids.) Our Sponsor this week is Columbia House Records, who want you to know they are back and they are coming for what they are owed. We open the show with Dee Snider getting real with the Senate and close with Sunkissed Music being adorably rebellious! Believe it or not, it's been 40 years since the P.M.R.C. senate hearings. For the young 'ens, The Parent's Music Resource Center was an organization of Senator's wives that were all about censoring music they didn't like. The Senate hearings were a momentous occasion when Frank Zappa, Dee Snider and John Denver (!) stepped up for Freedom Of Speech. Recently it was the anniversary of this dark day for democracy. So we decided to do a deep dive into the hearings. As well, we go over ringleader Tipper Gore's "Filthy 15". A list of "controversial" songs that got Tipper in a tizzy. This is probably our most politically charged episode yet. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we acknowledge the anniversary of the loss of the late, great Cliff Burton. Musically, we crank some Impaler (one of Tipsy's faves), Piledriver, Black Death, Tipper's Gore, Victim and we introduce (Canada's answer to The Mentors??) Powerload in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!!
This week, we have a special guest. Strap in for a breakdown of one of the most 90's movies of the decade, the Dee Snider written STRANGELAND. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “Under the Blade”– Twisted Sister

Is this an appropriate time to talk about censorship? How about freedom of speech? How about the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States Of America? We didn't plan it this way but history is rhyming in a big way right now, so we're actually glad to be taking a narrow-eyed look back at the past. 40 years ago this month Washington was abuzz with pending legislation to make laws determining some music obscene and ripe for censorship. Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center had the government all up in your business in 1985, and thankfully three REAL free speech warriors - Twisted Sister's Dee Snider, Frank Zappa and the unlikeliest of heroes, our man John Denver told Congress TO THEIR FACES to back off. Tipper's crusade against arbitrarily-deemed "filth" yielded ATTT a project. The so-called "Filthy Fifteen" is a list that's ripe for review, and the ATTT All-Stars are more than up for the task of ranking these songs using our patent-pending Worst To First format. Picks 7-1 are featured here in Part 2. Dee Snider joined Eddie Trunk to announce Twisted Sister's return for their 50th anniversary in 2026. After turning 70 and reflecting on the band's legacy, Dee decided it was time for one more run despite previously vowing never to reunite. He discusses the lineup changes, including Joe Franco replacing the late A.J. Pero on drums and Russ Pzutto taking over bass duties due to 'irreconcilable differences' with Mark Mendoza. Dee candidly shares his concerns about maintaining the high-energy performance style that defined Twisted Sister while explaining they'll focus on festival appearances rather than grueling tours. He also reveals they'll perform a setlist curated using AI data to identify their most popular songs worldwide, with a visual presentation that strikes a balance between their iconic 80s look and a more age-appropriate approach. Following that, Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover reflects on the band's iconic live album Made in Japan and its new reissue. He shares stories from his time with Rainbow, discusses working with Ritchie Blackmore, and reveals Deep Purple's plans for a new album and future touring. Glover also touches on the band's current lineup and their approach to live performances. In 1985, a group of powerful "Washington Wives" led by Tipper Gore formed the PMRC to clean up rock and roll, sparking a culture war that culminated in a dramatic Senate hearing. This episode of Rock N Roll Archaeology, "The Three-Body Problem," performs a forensic autopsy on that manufactured moral panic. We explore how the unlikely, chaotic alliance of John Denver, Dee Snider, and Frank Zappa dismantled the PMRC's case piece by piece. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this week's Wrestling With The Topics, Lee & Tammy tackle a wide mix of headlines—from real-world shockers to wrestling news, rock music updates, and everyday life as a college transfer student.
40 years ago this week our nation was under assault by forces of evil. These forces were conspiring to control artists and take away Americans' constitutionally-guaranteed rights to freedom of expression. In the halls of the United States Senate, three righteous warriors - Frank Zappa, Dee Snider and John Denver - stood up for artists and free speech by directly confronting the evil in power. The evil in power were the so-called "Washington Wives" - spouses to powerful Senators that were weighing a bipartisan violation of the first amendment to the constitution. The head of this clan otherwise known as the PMRC, or the Parents Music Resource Center, was the dreaded Tipper Gore. In the name of "protecting children" Tipper and her friends aimed for censorship. In the process, they gave us a weird but fascinating playlist they dubbed "The Filthy Fifteen" - fifteen songs they deemed to be obscene. This playlist is worth another look, and ATTT has decided to enlist our friends the ATTT All-Stars to give it our patented Worst To First treatment. Shannon Hurley, Gabe Scalone, Joe Lavelle, Matt Dinan and David Daskal were on hand to rank these songs and wax poetic about what a fucked up time the Reagan years were. oel Hoekstra is a powerhouse guitarist known for his technical skill, versatility, and relentless work ethic. Born on December 13, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa, and raised in a musical household, he started out playing cello and piano. But everything changed when he saw Angus Young of AC/DC on TV—at that moment, he knew guitar was his calling. That inspiration launched a career that would span Broadway stages, stadium tours, and studio sessions with some of the biggest names in rock.Joel first gained wider recognition playing with Night Ranger in the late 2000s. Around the same time, he became a fixture in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, performing eight shows a week while juggling touring commitments with rock bands. His ability to seamlessly shift between hard rock stages and theater pits set him apart from most guitarists in the scene. He later joined the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, known for their elaborate holiday arena tours, and in 2014, he landed a major gig as guitarist for Whitesnake. Since then, he's toured the world with the band, appearing on albums like The Purple Album and Flesh & Blood, where he also contributed as a songwriter. He's also performed alongside Cher, playing guitar for her Las Vegas residency and her “Here We Go Again” tour, proving he can hold his own in any musical environment. In addition to his high-profile band work, Joel leads his own project, Joel Hoekstra's 13, a melodic hard rock supergroup featuring players like Russell Allen, Vinny Appice, Tony Franklin, and Jeff Scott Soto. The project has released several critically acclaimed albums—Dying to Live (2015), Running Games (2021), and Crash of Life (2023)—with a new one on the way in 2025. The music is a blend of soaring vocals, powerful riffs, and sharp songwriting that showcases Joel's full range as a musician and producer.Outside of performing, Joel is a respected session guitarist and educator. He's contributed to albums by Foreigner, Dee Snider, and many others, and he's shared his expertise in magazines like Guitar World. Whether he's tearing it up onstage with a rock legend or composing intricate solos in the studio, Joel Hoekstra continues to prove why he's one of the most in-demand guitarists in rock today.⸻

“Wait, the reason you cut your hair was for 2 dudes?” It's officially our 6th anniversary! That's right, 6 years of metal discussions, ludicrous nonsense, and beers of the episode, and what better way to wrap up our 6th year in podcasting excellence than with STEEL PANTHER, the parody band that helped make 80's hair metal FUN again, with every hyperbolic metal cliché you can think of that makes them the epitome of everything that made late 80's hair metal so awesome. If S.O.D. is thrash metal with a generous side of hilarity, then STEEL PANTHER is quite obviously their hair metal counterpart. Find out what happened “three or four days later…after the crying stopped”, discover which Slayer song is considered their “ballad”, understand why it's healthy and fun to maintain the silliness of your youth as you get older and JOIN US as we celebrate 6 years of metal and nonsense by going deep INSIDE THE METAL of a band that blends hair metal and nonsense together on a level that our inner 8th grader would have greatly appreciated with the kings of L.A. hair metal absurdity, STEEL PANTHER. On this episode of Talkin' Rock, it's one rocker, an author, and the woman who runs Metallica's very successful All Within My Hands foundation. Up first, it's the legendary drummer Gil Moore of Triumph. The Magic Power - An All-Star Tribute To Triumph drops on June 6th, and it's packed with rock heavy hitters—Slash, Alex Lifeson, Dee Snider, Dorothy, Tommy Aldridge, and a TON more. Then, he talks about upcoming plans with the band, including something called a mixed reality tour. I don't know what that is, Gil said no one does because it hasn't been done before. He explains that part of it. Next, it's music journalist/author, Martin Popoff. We discuss his new 666-page book on Iron Maiden called Hallowed By Their Name. Martin has written over 130 rock books, so he knows a thing or sixty on the topic of rock and metal bands. We did get into some rock talk, which I really wanted to do. We talked about why Maiden has had so much success around the world, specifically outside of the United States. He speaks to who he thinks is the biggest metal band in the world and lots more. I'll have Martin back again in the future, he's a great guest. Finally, Renee Richardson, who runs Metallica's All Within My Hands foundation. She speaks to what they do, the birth of the foundation, how she got involved, and more. She also co-hosts the Metallica Report podcast, which is very well done. Fun conversation with Renee. Thanks for listening!

We're back to discuss all the latest, greatest, and strangest in the rock world with Geekwire! Here's what we're chewing on this time: David Lee Roth performs Van Halen hits at the M3 Rock Festival. Reactions were mixed. We give ours. A behind-the-scenes book on This Is Spinal Tap and its sequel is set for release in September. We hope it's in Dubly. Rikki Rockett says Poison gets a strong offer for a 2026 headlining tour; but it's up to Bret Michaels. Will The Cat get Dragged In again in 2026? Wolfgang Van Halen explains why he dropped the "WVH" from Mammoth's name and we try to decipher what he's talking about. Kirk Hammett unboxes Metallica's remastered Load deluxe box set and enthusiastically celebrates it's artwork. A fan spends $12,495 to be Gene Simmons's roadie and shares the experience. Was it worth the dough? Henry Rollins discusses large-scale Punk Rock Museum project and we speculate on it's possible Nashville location. Dee Snider explains why he moved his family to rural North Carolina. Was it worth The Price? A dump truck crashes into the Whisky A Go Go ahead of a Boy Hits Car concert. We really do live in a simulation, eh? George Lynch launches a new band, George Lynch & The Mob, with a rotating lineup. Basically, Lynch Mob. Motörhead's previously unreleased 1976 album The Manticore Tapes gets a release. We share our excitement. A rumor circulates that Led Zeppelin plans a new album and 2026 tour. But, is it even true? Additionally, we touch on listener-submitted topics including Sammy Hagar (yes, again), new releases from LA Guns and Faster Pussycat, Steve Perry collaborating with Willie Nelson, Sleep Token, the live return of Savatage, an upcoming Stryper Christmas album and more. Yesterday was Met Monday, one of the most anticipated days of the year for unemployed social media trolls and haute couture enthusiasts. This year's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," gave many celebrities the opportunity to showcase some questionable (and downright ugly) fashion choices. From Kim Kardashian seemingly auditioning for "Spy vs. Spy" to Chappell Roan cosplaying Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, this year's Met Gala was a disappointment for many.
