Tonight's episode is a full-throttle dive into classic rock greatness and hands-on guitar geekery! We kick things off with none other than David Lee Roth—Diamond Dave—returning to the stage at the M3 Rock Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland! Roth brought the house down with a blazing set packed with Van Halen classics and fan favorites. Full Setlist: • Panama • Drop Dead Legs • You Really Got Me • Unchained • Dance the Night Away • Runnin' With the Devil • Mean Street • Atomic Punk • And the Cradle Will Rock… • Jamie's Cryin' • I'm the One • Everybody Wants Some!! • Romeo Delight • Hot for Teacher • Ain't Talkin' ‘Bout Love • Jump After that epic breakdown, we shifted gears to some '80s guitar nostalgia and gear talk. I gave my vintage Hondo Fame bass a deep clean—bringing back that showroom shine. Ron got technical and upgraded a Floyd Rose tremolo system itself, dialing it in for maximum performance. And I wrapped things up by changing the strings on my Firefly Ghost, a John 5-style Telecaster that's ready to scream. This episode is wall-to-wall rock history, hands-on gear upgrades, and pure guitar passion. #DavidLeeRoth #M3RockFestival #VanHalen #MerriweatherPostPavilion #LiveSetlist #HondoGuitars #FloydRose #GuitarUpgrades #FireflyGuitars #John5 #GuitarMods #GuitarTalk #RockLegends #VintageGuitars #GuitarGear #TalkingGuitars #JohnnyBeaneTV

As the premier season of the show comes to a close, Richie Sambora sends it off with a fun, free-wheeling episode that looks at his high-drama fingerwork on “Only Lonely” from Bon Jovi's second record, 1985's 7800° Fahrenheit. (The song's music video is everything you'd ever want from mid-'80s hard rock.) Richie joins Shifty subterranean-style, from his mother's basement in New Jersey, where he's equipped with a reverse-headstock Charvel, complete with a Floyd Rose system. It's a busy time for Sambora: His first new single in 11 years, “I Pray,” dropped in late April, alongside a brand new, four-part Bon Jovi documentary. For “Only Lonely,” Sambora recalls that he used just a 50-watt Marshall and a yellow Boss overdrive pedal to push it to the limit. Producer Lance Quinn captured the performance at the Warehouse in Philly in spring 1985, and Sambora hasn't slowed at all since that day. Shifty takes a run at a few of Sambora's blistering lead screeds before Richie takes the reins and brings it home. They don't leave it at “Only Lonely”; as an added bonus, they run through Sambora's famous licks from “Bad Medicine,” too. Between solo runs, Richie talks about his current rig (no modelers for him, just old-school tube-amp goodness) and addresses the rumors: Will he rejoin Bon Jovi after 11 years gone? Stu Levitan's guest is UW history professor Stephen Kantrowitz, whose new book should be of special interest to those of us here in Teejop. It's Citizens of a Stolen Land: A Ho-Chunk History of the 19th Century United States from the good people at the University of North Carolina Press. If you are like most Americans with an immigrant background, you probably think citizenship is a good thing, because it confers rights and privileges. But for Native Americans in the 19th century, it was something quite different – it was a way to destroy their collectivist culture and ultimately steal their land. Until some Native peoples – notably the Ho-Chunk – figured out how to use citizenship and private property rights to reclaim land and preserve their identity. The Ho-Chunk story in the Removal Era is one of both settler/colonial violence and conquest, but also one of Ho-Chunk resistance, persistence, and return. It is a story Stephen Kantrowitz is very qualified to tell. He is the Plaenert-Bascom and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of History an affiliate faculty member in American Indian Studies and Afro-American Studies, here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, teaching courses on race, indigeneity, politics, and citizenship. His previous books are More Than Freedom: Fighting for Black Citizenship in a White Republic, 1829-1889 (Penguin, 2012) and Ben Tillman and the Reconstruction of White Supremacy (UNC Press, 2000).And of particular interest to me, he co-chaired with Dr. Floyd Rose, president of 100 Black Men of Madison, the chancellor's committee in 2018 that produced a very knowledgeable and nuanced report on KKK on campus.

El ex miembro Floyd Rose también es mejor conocido como el inventor del sistema de trémolo de bloqueo de guitarra Evan Sheeley Bass, Keyboards, Sequencing Gary Thompson Drums, Drum Programming, Percussion Rick Pierce Guitars Floyd Rose Guitars Jonathan Scott K. On this episode, Rhett and Zach discuss the relationship that they each have with the guitar at this point in their careers. Making a living doing the thing you love is great—in fact, it's something that so many players aspire to. But it changes the relationship between player and instrument when the instrument is a source of work. How do they stay excited about their work? And how do they get excited when they're in a lull? What keeps their creativity flowing? These are big questions, but our hosts are both having their own renaissances with their guitars. And—surprise!—it's because they've both come into some new key pieces of gear.Zach reports that he has been rippin' totally sweet Metallica licks on his sick new ESP LTD Kirk Hammett Signature Series KH-602. He's a longtime fan of the band—and has conveniently fallen back in love with Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning—and says he's wanted a Hammett signature guitar for his entire guitar-playing life. When he saw this one at Nashville's Guitars To Be Played, he fell in love with everything, from the skull and crossbones fret markers to the Floyd Rose. And you know what? The Floyd Rose isn't hard to set up. This guitar, Zach says, is kickstarting his “love of the guitar again.”Meanwhile, Rhett has been enjoying his new Soldano SLO-100 head and matching 4x12 cabinet, even if he does keep the cab a few flights below his control room. He's stoked about the story of Soldano, who he admires for being one of the early boutique amp builders, and has been playing this new 100-watter all week. When it's time to dip a rig, it's hard to find any faults. No spoilers, but it's a nice one (and an easy gig load). And in the shill zone, Zach talks about the importance of running a brown box for owners of older amps and talks briefly about the difference between the Brown Box and a Variac.Subscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintone Dipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals https://mythospedals.comPremier Guitar https://www.premierguitar.com/

This edition of Dipped In Tone has a great guest—Foo Fighters' Chris Shiflett, but … wait! There's more! Hosts Rhett Shull and Zach Broyles tackle a pressing question: What band has recorded the most songs that you—and they—first learned on guitar? The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Nirvana, Zeppelin, the Stones....? Who gets your vote? Also, Zach opens the mail, and it's a box of Hotwound Dual-Rail single-coil-sized humbuckers for his 1982 Strat (with a vintage Floyd Rose) from Dipped In Tone sponsors Stew-Mac. (If you're looking to update, mod, or build a pedal, guitar, or amp, check out stewmac.com/dippedintone for a 10-percent discount.) More important, Shiflett steps up to the plate to respond to Rhett and Zach's “aggressive critique” of his recent Premier Guitar Rig Rundown. But before that, he joins the host in dipping a rig—submitted by courageous DIT Patreon member Rob F., who has been playing a little over a year. His rig: a hot-rodded and Plecked Squier Affinity, an Orange Dark Micro 20, two 2x12 Zilla cabs, and a pedalboard with a JHSJ Series Fuzz, a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe, a PolyTune, and a Lehle splitter to switch between Orange and Joyo heads, plus a JHS attenuator. The verdict? Listen to find out. What else? Chris tells a story about his older brother's full stack, which became his first band's PA. Then it's time for him to share his thoughts on Zach and Rhett's critique. And to talk about the new Foo Fighters rig he's having developed—with MIDI-triggered scene changes, an off-stage switcher, and more goodies. He also talks about his current 4x12 Vox cabinets, and how one got a hole burned in its grille cloth by the Foos' stage lasers. He also discusses about his trust issues, the Strymon Deco, his classic Les Paul Custom, vintage gear, his solo rig, and his upcoming solo album recorded in Nashville … and takes questions from listeners. Be on the watch for the next DIT in early January.Get 10% off from StewMac when you visit stewmac.com/dippedintoneSubscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintoneProduced by Jason ShadrickDipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals

Few cases are more heavily debated online than the death of Kendrick Johnson. When the 17-year-old was found dead inside a gym mat at his high school, his family was devastated. But when the police told them the death would be ruled an accident, they were confused and angry. They exhumed the body and hired an independent pathologist. Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis is rock 'n' roll's loudest low talker. Onstage, the reserved frontman is overshadowed by his three full stacks, summoning up President Teddy Roosevelt's quote: “speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” Fellow volume-dealing stalwarts Emmett Jefferson Murphy III (drums)—better known as “Murph”—and Lou Barlow (bass/vocals) helped J form the band in 1984 after their first group, Deep Wound, dissolved. Both left Dinosaur Jr., and then rejoined in 2005. This core group has released eight studio albums of dynamically rich rock that teeters between a runaway locomotive fueled on feedback and buzzing riffs, and hooky, melodic, pop-soaked nimble rhythms that carry more than they crush. While never reaching the mainstream stratosphere like some of their contemporaries (including Nirvana, who opened for Dino Jr. in 1991), this consummate power trio have remained popular in the American underground by continually selling out theaters, splashing into the Billboard 200 (climbing even higher in the Independent and Rock charts), and headlining alternative-music festivals. All along the way, their soft-spoken shredder has ascended as a guitar-hero among musical outcasts. Before Dinosaur Jr.'s sold-out show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, Mascis reconnected with PG's Chris Kies to talk Teles (yes, you read that right; he's touring with more Telecasters than ever), including the development of his new signature T that's based on his studio-perfect '58 model. We also witness two firsts for J: a Phantom-Tele-Jazzmaster Frankenstein and a Floyd Rose-equipped guitar. What drew me to him was his amazing talent and his awesome choice of guitar - a lime green Suhr. This was a guitarist with all the right influences (Eddie, Dimebag, Yngwie, Petrucci, Chris Amott), yet you couldn't find a more interesting image. He doesn't use a Floyd Rose bridge, but a two-prong vibrato. He doesn't play a Jackson or a Dean, but a Suhr. And yet, his tone, sound, look and feel is in my opinion a cut above the rest. He lets the music talk for him, and I think you will be hearing about him in a few years if you don't already know. #ifyoudontknownowyouknow Born in America and raised in Bangladesh, he moved back to the states and started jamming with like-minded musicians to form The Poynt, a rock band that's taking New York City over. He also contributed to live performances with F-Bomb, where he recently performed a flawless rendition of “Eruption” by Van Halen. Adhnan was happy to see one of his guitar heroes in the audience to witness his performance who then sang his praise (he talks about it in this episode). We also talk about his various endorsement deals (Friedman Amplifiers, EMG Pickups, and Morley Pedals - a rarity for independent musicians). In my opinion, Adhnan Sulaiman is the American dream personified - a kid from a humble background who put his talent to use and is achieving goals.

Very sadly on Tuesday October 6, 2020 65-year-old Eddie Van Halen passed away from a long struggle with throat cancer. His son Wolfgang stated “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken, and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.” Not just the guitar world, but the universe has lost an amazingly talented guitarist, songwriter and innovator. He was our Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Segovia who unknowingly changed the sound of music forever. As a confirmation of his impact, music stores like Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Sam Ash have seen a huge increase in sales of EVH branded guitar products. Guitar goodies like EVH effects pedals, amps, pick-ups are now on back order. In fact, the world has been reawakened to Eddie’s music since his death as it has been reported that Van Halen streams have gone up an astonishingly 1,300%! As a teenager in the late 70’s I saw firsthand what Eddie did for all of us young guitarists. A shear tsunami engulfed the guitar community worldwide with his alarming two handed technique and reckless spirited solos with pinpoint accuracy. To this day a smile comes to my face when I think of those candy-striped patterns on his guitars; first white & black, then yellow and black then to the iconic red, black & white striped Kramers. When I hear early Van Halen it takes me back to my high school days and my band, REIGN, as we attempted to play You Really Got Me, Runnin’ With The Devil, Dance The Night Away, Outta Love Again, Unchained, Pretty Woman and others for bars and dances. His tone, sounds and guitars gave us all a green light to modify our guitars to get that so-called “Brown Tone”. Yes, we were all very dangerous with a router, spray cans and Floyd Rose locking tremolos. It was a time of unbridle freedom from the stock norm Gibson and Fender guitars. Who wanted stock-No Way! I’m going to build my own guitar with pick-ups of my choosing and a smooth maple neck. Oh yes none of those closet queen guitars from 1958, we wanted custom everything. Yes, Eddie made it okay for the world not to except mediocre stock guitars and Man I miss those days of unbridle guitar passion! All I can say is the legacy Eddie leaves behind is far greater than the mortality of the man himself!

An Aussie triple-header this week! First up we speak to Jimi Hocking of the legendary Screaming Jets. Jimi talks us through the 'Jets latest album, upcoming tours with Boom Crash Opera, Jimi's award winning solo career and much more. Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley drop in to give us the low down on their Brooke and Adam album, the first album produced by the husband and wife team as their regular gigs -the McClymonts and the Adam Eckersley Band - are taking a brief break. Finally, we speak with Ian Cook of V Trem Guitars. Ian has ingeniously designed and patented a locking tremolo system that has all the stability of a non-recessed Floyd Rose style bridge, whilst still being able to both raise and lower the pitch. Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross get to the bottom of L.A Noire. It's 1947. The war is over, and changed men are returning to a changed nation. Cole Phelps, a Marine-turned-cop, must face down his own demons while tackling corruption in the system.
