There is a reason Judas and the crowd came to arrest Jesus at night; they didn't want anyone to see their actions. Even in the midst of this dark moment, Jesus speaks to the shadows, casting light into the darkness. How can we be a people that brings light to the shadows of our lives? This message is taught from using the passage of Luke 22:47-53.

In this episode, I have an enlightening conversation with artist Carla Falb, who shares her unique journey through art, spirituality, and personal growth. We explore the profound influence her father's role as a Methodist minister had on her early understanding of mysticism and creativity, and how these experiences shaped her artistic vision.-----------------------------Since 2002, Carla Falb has been creating paintings of roller coasters from images she captures on her GoPro while riding in the front car. Facing the initial fear and the adrenaline rush of the ride is infused into her work – like a 21st century J.M.W. Turner tied to the mast of a ship witnessing a storm at sea. To the casual viewer, her series depicts mere amusements, yet her underlying intention is that the roller coasters symbolize our experience in this life, with all its peaks and valleys. After the death of her mother on Christmas in 2016, her emphasis shifted to nighttime imagery with light bursting through the darkness. For Falb, the light in her paintings represents our divine sparks or higher selves, connected to one another in a universal field of consciousness. Carla Falb was raised in Philadelphia and spent her summers at the Jersey Shore. She was very close to her father, a Methodist minister, who shared his interest in mysticism with her, as well as his quirky sense of humor, love of art, music, dancing, and amusement parks! Falb received a B.F.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art and a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1983. During that time, after learning traditional drawing and painting techniques, she created paintings based on imagery from her dreams and visions. Twenty years later, Falb returned to Philadelphia and attended the University of the Arts for her M.F.A. where she began painting roller coaster structures. In addition to her painting practice, Falb has taught art full time since 1987. She received a Dodge Foundation Fellowship for Artists/Educators that funded her travel to Southern California in 2009 to record source imagery for her Roller Coaster Series. During her visit, Falb fell in love with the area, and relocated to Orange County in 2017 where she is currently a tenured professor at Fullerton College. Exhibition highlights include solo exhibits at the Billis Williams Gallery in Los Angeles, where she is represented, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Alumni Gallery. Her work was also featured in exhibits at the Preston Contemporary Art Center in New Mexico, and at the Noyes Museum of Art in New Jersey. The Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts recently commissioned and acquired one of her HangTime paintings, which feature the light streams of a roller coaster captured on a nighttime helicopter ride. January 13, 2025 I noticed the other day the intense feeling that I suddenly got throughout my body when I was having a conversation with someone. That sense of flight or fight was real. My reaction to it was to protect – and that looked like judgment, anger, hiding, superiority, etc. But the situation didn't warrant my reaction. What was really going on? When we are confronted with a situation that triggers us, our immediate reaction is often fight or flight or freeze. It can feel like a crack has opened in our lives that is dark. Yet if we stay in that darkness, we are unable to see what is really going on in us. We have to let the dark crack be filled by light as we stabilize our bodies and get our minds quiet, giving some breathing room for what is really going on in us. Then we will be able to see what we are gripping onto, what we are trying to control or hide from, and let properly put those things where they belong – out of our hands. Our listening portion today is from the bible, 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (cowardice, fear), but a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.” photo credit: Joe Gardner on unsplash

In Pastor Travis Hearn's Christmas Eve sermon, My Light in the Dark, he reflects on the founding of Impact Church, emphasizing its mission to shine as a beacon of hope in a dark world. Drawing from Philippians 2:15 and Matthew 5:14-16, he connects the imagery of stars and light with the transformative power of Jesus, the Light of the World. The message highlights three areas where Jesus brings light into our lives: emotional darkness, offering peace amidst struggles like anxiety and despair; relational darkness, healing broken relationships and offering forgiveness; and spiritual darkness, bridging the gap caused by sin and bringing us closer to God. Through personal stories, biblical examples, and heartfelt encouragement, the sermon reminds listeners to embrace Christ's light, shine brightly for others, and find hope in His promises, even in life's darkest moments. The service concludes with baptisms and the powerful symbolism of candlelight, reflecting the glory of Jesus as our eternal light. In this episode, Kat chats with sports commentator Harry Everett about his own mental health journey and the challenges men face in opening up about their struggles. Harry shares some personal stories, tips for getting through the winter blues, and how being real with others can make a huge difference. KEY TAKEAWAYS I used to hate this time of year when you'd go to work and come home in the dark. Now I do outdoorsy things like going for a run or a cycle during the day and I'll go to gym when it's dark. I'm lucky, being self-employed, that I can do that others might not be so lucky. But, if you're employed and can't run, cycle of exercise during the day, simply making sure you get outside on your lunch break can be enough to overcome seasonal affective disorder. In recent years I've not been very good in my own company, I get bored easily and have to ring people to talk to someone. Maybe I'm too extroverted or ADHD but feel like I need to be busy all the time or around people. I'd like to be more comfortable with just myself on my own and I've started testing myself when I'm away for work by going out to eat on my own, but it's a work in progress. My best mate, Max, killed himself when he was 19. I never got over it and always wanted to try to help and support him. At my wedding recently I didn't have a best man because Max was always supposed to be my best man, luckily I had some very understanding and supportive groomsmen! Instead we had a charity box set up for people to donate to MIND which was a positive way to honour him. If you give up an hour of your time to talk to someone, on a podcast for example, and show your vulnerability – it might make you feel uncomfortable, embarrassed or cringey, but that doesn't matter. You never know, your conversation could end up saving someone's life. BEST MOMENTS “During the Winter one of my friends has started to go to bed at 10pm and get up at 7pm to make the most of the daylight hours.”“There have been nights where I've woken up and taken myself to A&E because I've been considering doing what Max did. Probably because he did it is why I haven't done it because I've seen the pain it caused his family and friends.”“I want to raise awareness of mental health because it's an elephant in the room and a subject that people don't talk about enough.”“Anyone can do Movember for free, it costs nothing not to shave.” ABOUT THE GUEST Harry Everett is a freelance sports journalist, compere, host and coach who spends a lot of time commentating on Somerset cricket on their award-winning livestream and for BBC Sport on football and cricket amongst other more niche sports media roles such as Media Manager for Badminton England and work in pickleball too. He has also commentated on England Lions and Sri Lanka and South Africa's international sides and is regularly invited on other sports podcasts. He also tries to be a positive advocate for mental health and in getting young men speaking particularly too, you can donate to his Movember page here: X Instagram Do get in touch with him if wanted for speaking at any events ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

There are many myths that have built up around serial killer Ted Bundy. The public imagination indicates that he was handsome and charming, a supposed ladies man. The reality is far different. He was a loser. Consistently, Ted Bundy wasn't charming. His murders were brutal and never the result of seduction or charm. He was violent and ruthless. He's been played by superstar actors in movies which lends him a persona of glamour. But author Kathy Rubin Rubin Kleiner is dispelling the myths and legends of popular culture. Her book, A Light in the Dark, is about the victims of Ted Bundy and their stories are not about his charm, his charisma, or his good looks. They are stories of a brutal, violent, and desperate creep. And Kathy Rubin Kleiner knows this first hand. Kathy herself, survived being attacked by Ted Bundy. Kathy Kleiner joined Wake Up Tri-Counties this week.
