Under namnet Mammoth gör Wolfgang Van Halen maffig grungerock. Wolfgang Van Halen joins us to talk all about his new album: Mammoth - The End.Listen to Primordial Radio 24/7
Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsOnly recently I celebrated my five-year anniversary with HEAVY Mag and over the years I've had the privilege of meeting and interviewing some of the world's biggest music stars, living out my wildest music nerd dreams. Nerves come and go depending on who it is that I'm interviewing, and ‘normally' I hold my shit together. Today? Oh boy… Don't get me wrong, I jumped at the opportunity to have a chat with Wolfgang Van Halen, although it wasn't until I somehow blasted through THREE, yes three, whole pages of questions I wanted to ask that I sat back and reflected on the gravity of the occasion. I thought about what his music means to me, what his family's music means to me, and how insane it was that I would be casually chatting to Wolf from my little office in Australia.Wolf's newest album from his band project Mammoth, The End, is due for its release on October 24, and this was a major topic interview. I wanted to know how this recording experience at the legendary 5150 Studios varied from his other Mammoth albums and what it was like to work with Robert Rodriguez on his self-titled film clip that honours the 1996 Quentin Tarantino horror film From Dusk Till Dawn as it celebrates turning 30 next year. If you haven't already, do yourself a favour and watch it. Many Easter eggs await to be spotted… I'll wait, hurry back...Being a man of many hats, or instruments rather, I felt I already knew what his stance would be about this particular question, although trying to be a good journalist, I wanted to ask about AI/technology and see how he felt about its place in the music industry. His answer was pretty much F$%K AI. "There's no soul or heart behind it. It makes hot dogs - it's all gross stuff and none of it is real". Great answer, and honestly, if I'm going to trust anyone's opinion on the matter, it's going to be the guy who's taught himself instruments without asking a computer to ‘fill in the gaps'. AI has its place in mundane tasks, not in our creative community. This was such a fun interview. We covered a lot of ground mapping out his music journey this far, dropping cool stories and treasured memories from over the years that only a Van Halen fan could subtly sprinkle in. Look, I could carry on all day - this is only meant to be a quick summary, go ahead and check out the video below and have Wolf tell you all about it himself!Get ready to have your f*#$king socks blown clean off. The End is near, and for once, everyone is running towards it. Be prepared to turn it up LOUD with your air guitar and drum sticks ready on stand by.Bye, legends!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Wolfgang Van Halen on A Different Kind of Truth: “The Fact That It Happened at All Is a Miracle” In a recent interview with Paul Cashmere of Noise11.com, Wolfgang Van Halen reflected on his role in creating A Different Kind of Truth — the final Van Halen album and the band's first full-length studio release since 1998. Wolfgang, who joined Van Halen at just 15 years old, played alongside his father Eddie Van Halen from 2006 until the band's final tour in 2015. He recalled how the 2012 album came together from the ground up: “It just felt like the right time for Van Halen to release new music,” Wolfgang said. “We'd toured, and the next logical step was to record something. Some of the demos started as early as 2009 — it took years. The fact that the record even happened is kind of a miracle.” According to Wolfgang, many of the songs were based on unfinished demos from the 1970s, which he discovered and helped bring to life. “A lot of those ideas were from the band's early days,” he explained. “It was a great way to get everyone back into that old creative mindset. It was fun — a lot of work, but I'm really proud of what we did.” Streaming Drama and Band Tensions The album made headlines again in June 2024 when it finally returned to streaming platforms after nearly two years of being unavailable. In a 2023 interview with Eddie Trunk, Wolfgang revealed the delay stemmed from internal disagreements: “Some people involved with the record don't like it,” Wolfgang admitted. “We've been trying to get it back up, but it's not easy. Let's just say those people were part of the record.” When Trunk asked if the person “with three initials” — a clear reference to David Lee Roth — was the issue, Wolfgang simply replied, “Probably.” Shortly after, Roth responded with a tongue-in-cheek YouTube video titled “Family Therapy.” In the skit, he mocked Wolfgang's frustrations about the album's streaming issues, even comparing A Different Kind of Truth to Muhammad Ali's late-career fights, suggesting it wasn't one of the band's finer moments. Wolfgang on Roth, the Band, and His Father's Legacy Over the years, Wolfgang has spoken candidly about his limited relationship with Roth: “We were cordial, but it was very business-related,” he told Rolling Stone. “We were always cool, but we only really saw each other onstage.” In later interviews, Wolfgang also hinted that Roth's difficult personality was a major reason why a proposed Eddie Van Halen tribute concert never materialized: “Some people made it really hard to get anything done when it came to Van Halen,” he said. “The fact that we managed to do three tours, release an album of new material, and a live record — that's a miracle in itself.” Wolfgang also set the record straight on how Van Halen operated behind the scenes: “People love to pin everything on Dad, but Al [Alex Van Halen] was the brain,” he explained. “Dad just wanted to play guitar. The Van Halen philosophy was always: if nothing's happening, there's nothing to talk about.” Eddie Van Halen passed away in October 2020 at age 65, surrounded by family and friends. With the band inactive since its 2015 U.S. tour, A Different Kind of Truth remains a rare and powerful final chapter in Van Halen's legendary story — and, as Wolfgang says, “a miracle that it even happened at all.” #ExclusivelyVanHalen #VanHalen #WolfgangVanHalen #EddieVanHalen #DavidLeeRoth #ADifferentKindOfTruth #VanHalenFans #VanHalenFamily #RockHistory #RockLegends #ClassicRock #GuitarGod #5150time #VanHalenNation #RockInterview #MusicNews #HardRock #VanHalenLive #SammyHagar #JohnnyBeaneTV

In a recent interview with Guitar Interactive Magazine, Paul Reed Smith opened up about his unexpected connection to Eddie Van Halen. “I made the 5150 pickup. I made the 5150 guitar. I'm the one who bolted it together and got it working at Kramer,” Smith revealed, recalling his hands-on role in shaping one of rock's most iconic guitars. Although a signature PRS model for Eddie never materialized, Smith did craft a custom guitar for him years later. The collaboration nearly happened—an “almost” that has since become part of guitar legend. “I did make one for him… He was a sweetheart. He was so nice to me,” Smith said. “It just wasn't meant to be.” We dive into a recent Guitar Interactive Magazine interview where Paul Reed Smith claims he built the Kramer 5150 pickup and the guitar itself!
A sad show today, remembering the life of Ozzy Osbourne. Chaz and AJ spoke with Zakk Wylde back in March, about his excitement in joining the Ozzy farewell show. (0:00) Jimi Bell was one of the very last guitarist tryouts to be considered for the band, before Zakk Wylde was the selection. Jimi was on the phone with Chaz this morning to talk about the tryout process, having dinner with Ozzy, and jamming with Zakk after watching all the other guitarist hopefuls be sent home. (5:44) Live Nation's Jimmy Koplik was on the phone to talk about Ozzy's death, the rare sell-out feat Ozzy achieved in Connecticut, and explained why Connecticut always seemed to be able to book OzzFest dates. (27:20) Tribe memeber Kelly was on the phone to talk about the live tribute to Ozzy from last night in Hartford. Wolfgang Van Halen brought the house down with a rendition of "Mama, I'm Coming Home," and the Creed tribute was so Creed. (39:39) Doc McGhee, KISS manager, was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to talk about bringing Ozzy to Russia, and his close friendship with Ozzy and Sharon. (44:10) Carmine Appice, who drummed with Ozzy, was on the phone to remember his friend and bandmate. Carmine shared a story of Ozzy immediately being smitten with a Long Island burger joint after just one visit. (53:25) Don Dokken was on the phone to talk about the Jam at the Dam coming to Connecticut this weekend, but spent most his time remembering Ozzy Osbourne. (1:01:53)

Recorded at the iconic 5150 Studios and produced once again by trusted collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette, "The End" finds Wolfgang pushing his creative boundaries. Fans can pre-order "The End" now in a variety of collector-worthy formats, including limited-edition colored vinyl, a signed insert edition, and exclusive retailer bundles.

Wolfgang Van Halen returns to Talkin' Rock. We discuss is latest song and video, The End. It's horror-themed, so we had to talk about horror movies a little bit. He told me why he isn't going to the final Black Sabbath show, how he works on his music in the studio, and more. To close out the episode, it's John Jackson from the Bon Scott estate. It was interesting talking to John about how he got his job, working with the legendary AC/DC, seeing some recent shows, and a special concert coming up to celebrate Bon's 79th birthday. Yes, there will be some very cool guests who will be in attendance to honor the late singer. Thanks for listening!
Are you still reading these silly show notes? Honestly, bless your heart. You're a true Time Machiner. Or you're just really bored at work. Anyway, on this week's episode, Dave and Milt climb into the Time Machine and rocket back to June 21, 1975 — the land of lava lamps, fringe vests, and an absolutely bonkers Billboard Top 10 Albums chart. We're talkin' Elton, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beach Boys, and even Alice Cooper giving us all the Welcome-to-My-Nightmare vibes (spoiler: it's not a lullaby). But wait — Milt's back from Africa! That's right, our Chartmeister went on a literal safari. Lions. Giraffes. Possibly cursed sand. He's got stories, and Dave is mildly concerned for his health and sanity. Oh, and intern Jack "The Fact Machine" Nathanson drops in to host a chaotic 80s music trivia quiz that somehow leads to Warrant, Mr. Roboto, David Lee Roth, and yes, Michael Bolton co-writing a KISS song. You can't make this stuff up. The episode ends (because it has to) with the boys politely kicking some albums off the list and replacing them with stuff they actually like. Sorry, Chicago, but y'all were in your weird phase.
Michael Anthony Opens Up About His One Big Regret: Van Halen Deserved a Thunderous Farewell, Not a Whimper For Michael Anthony, former Van Halen bassist, the ride with one of rock's most electrifying bands was nothing short of a dream — until the ending, which still haunts him. In a recent episode of Get on the Bus, Anthony revealed his biggest career regret: how Van Halen's legendary run came to an unceremonious close. “It should have gone out with a fricking bang that shook the world,” he said, “and it was more like a whimper, the way everything ended.” Though he described the band's heyday as “living the dream” and even “a fairy tale,” the behind-the-scenes reality was far from perfect. As years went by, tensions and personal rifts—particularly with guitarist Eddie Van Halen—created a lasting fracture. “Unfortunately, Eddie and I never made amends,” Anthony shared. “We had some issues, and I'm sure that if he had not passed when he did, we would've reconciled… we would've calmed all that stuff down.” In a bittersweet twist, Anthony revealed that there had been talks of a massive reunion tour featuring the original members — a true full-circle moment in the making. “I talked to Wolfgang [Van Halen], and he said there were plans to bring everyone back together,” Anthony recalled. “At that point in Ed's life, he was more like, ‘Hey, the past is the past... water under the bridge.'” But time ran out. Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020, and with him went the final chance for the ultimate Van Halen reunion. Now, years later, Anthony holds onto the music, the memories — and the what ifs. “That's the only regret I have,” he said. “We were supposed to go out with thunder. Not silence.” Michael Anthony - The TRUE Van Halen Story You've NEVER Heard! https://youtu.be/oKzjBY-OarA?si=TXZlTWyqxHjeu_tB EVH Van Halen guitar keychains - https://www.vanhalenstore.com/page/VH/Little-Guitars/KEYSET-456
Sammy Hagar is up first this week. His new song "Encore, Thank You, Goodnight" is out now. Sammy talks about the song, how it came to him in a dream, and why Wolfgang Van Halen didn't play on it. Sammy is really upfront and candid when he talks, which is appreciated. He also shared his thoughts on playing the last Ozzy/Black Sabbath show and the songs he'll be singing. Doug Aldrich from The Dead Daisies is next. Doug fought a cancer battle last year and talked about that. I'm very happy that he's come out of it, and he says he gets stronger every day. The band dropped a new album called Looking For Trouble, where they cover classic blues songs. He told me how the idea came about and spoke about the recording process and location. He also shared stories of rockers, including David Coverdale of Whitesnake, Ronnie James Dio, Reb Beach, and the first time he met Randy Rhoads. I could talk to Doug all day! Finally, singer Nate Peck joins me. This is the first time I've ever had the chance to speak with Nate. The Michigan-born singer talks about being on American Idol, through getting the job with Firehouse. The first gig they played, he didn't even get to rehearse! Nate speaks of his influences, singing these classic songs, and lots more. It was great to connect with Nate!
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we talk about Sammy Hagar's bold invitation to Wolfgang Van Halen to join him for a special Van Halen-themed residency, the dream that inspired his emotional tribute to Eddie, and why he still holds out hope for more musical magic—even without Alex Van Halen. Sammy Hagar is turning up the heat again—and this time, he's calling out to Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, with a heartfelt and electrifying offer: “Hey Wolfie, let's do a residency someday—just one show of Van Halen songs!” In a new interview with WRIF, the Red Rocker didn't hold back his admiration for Wolfgang, praising the Mammoth WVH frontman for blazing his own trail. “He's not trying to be his dad, and I love that,” Hagar said with genuine pride. “Let that boy boogie!” Despite Wolfgang's past statements that he won't perform Van Halen songs live, Hagar is holding out hope for a one-night-only celebration. But that's not all. Sammy revealed something even more surreal—his new song Encore, Thank You, Goodnight was inspired by a dream he had where he wrote a song with Eddie Van Halen himself. “I had a friggin' dream and wrote a song with Eddie!” Sammy shared. “That's as real as it gets.” He describes the track as a final chapter, a spiritual jam session that gave him the closure he needed. “The ‘what if' is gone now. I feel good. Healthy, even.” The track features none other than Joe Satriani, who Sammy says completely captured Eddie's essence. “The intro… I don't even try to figure out what Joe's doing,” Hagar laughed. “I ain't torturing myself with that.” One person not involved? Alex Van Halen. “Al and I… we've got a problem,” Hagar admitted. “You'd have to ask him what it is. I don't know. But I knew he probably wouldn't be part of it.” Still, when asked if he regrets his time in Van Halen, Sammy didn't hesitate: “Oh, hell no! The only regret I have is that we didn't make more music. Eddie and I were just getting started. We were capable of so much more.” And as a bonus, Hagar revealed he'll be part of Black Sabbath's farewell show, originally planning to sing No More Tears until Ozzy Osbourne himself asked to sing Hagar's Rock Candy! So now? Sammy's cranking up the volume on Flying High Again. You won't want to miss this episode of Exclusively Van Halen—packed with heart, history, and one seriously rocking dream. #VanHalen #SammyHagar #WolfgangVanHalen #MammothWVH #EddieVanHalen #JoeSatriani #AlexVanHalen #OzzyOsbourne #BlackSabbath #RockNews #ExclusivelyVanHalen #JohnnyBeaneTV Want to create live streams like this? Just two days after their 2025 MMRBQ performance, Mammoth came back to Philadelphia to perform in the very intimate club setting of the Foundry in a Pierre Presents session. Along with playing a set for some very lucky WMMR listeners, Wolfgang Van Halen sat down for a conversation with Pierre Robert in between songs, recorded in front of a live audience full of fans. The pair discussed Mammoth's latest single "The End," including the wicked music video directed by one of Wolf's favorite directors, Robert Rodriguez. They also talked about the legendary 5150 and how Wolf incorporates vintage Van Halen gear into this new music. When Pierre brought up Mammoth's very first single, "Distance," and moving through grief with music, you'll hear the impactful moment that brought the room to a standstill; anyone who's lost a loved one will be able to relate. Wolf is always honest about how the loss of his father, Eddie Van Halen, has affected him, but he's also hopeful and the future is bright for the band. He's preparing for the Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne tribute in Birmingham, touring with Creed this summer, and putting out more new music. WOLFGANG VAN HALEN INTERVIEWED BY BILLY CORGAN!
We dive into some killer guitar stories and surprises! First up, we touch on Billy Corgan's interview with Wolfgang Van Halen—but don't worry, I'll be covering that in-depth on Exclusively Van Halen, so stay tuned for that episode! In other news, Bruce Kulick reveals the worst gig of his career with KISS—and trust me, it's a wild one. Plus, we check out what Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits says is his most challenging song to play live. That's not all! I show off my Silvertone guitar, and Ron makes a bold promise—he's going to paint a Stratocaster pink!
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we celebrate the anniversary of A Different Kind of Truth!
While the first of our two year in review episodes focused on the albums we reviewed and authors & podcasters we hosted on the show, Part 2 drills down on the live concerts we talked about and the 15 artists & legends we had the good fortune to interview on UAWIL in 2024. We knew that when The Wolf left Europe for the American midwest, there would be fewer opportunities to see live shows by the bands we love. But we made the most of it with some killer concerts including taking a disappointed 9 year old to see Journey (He's not the leads singer of Journey!?!), taking Action Jackson to his first Steve Hackett show, laughing and singing along with Colin Hay and finally seeing Wolfgang Van Halen live. But the real story is around the amazing performers we welcomed in 2024, almost doubling the number we hosted in 2023 and tripling the number of Rock N Roll Hall of Famers. We welcomed Steve Hackett (Genesis) for the 2nd time as well as his fellow Hall of Famers Guy Fletcher (Dire Straits) and the legendary Steve Howe (Yes, Asia). We also spoke with members of or worked with bands we loved growing up like Simple Minds, Vixen and Eric Clapton. We also spoke with some new generation rockers like Kiran Roy (October Drift) and Scott Holiday (Rival Sons) as in order to keep rock alive, we need new bands to fly the flag. The Wolf & Action Jackson are grateful to all our many listeners all over the globe, to our sponsor RareVinyl.com, to our friends at Pantheon Podcasts and to each other for putting together the best year we've ever had!! For Wolfgang Van Halen, learning the drums, guitar and bass came easier than learning to deal with the trolling and resentment he faced for being the son of Eddie Van Halen. Wolfgang tells Marc how touring as part of Van Halen taught him what to avoid in his career and helped him gain perspective on the type of music he wanted to make on his own. They also talk about the universal experience of grief and how Wolfgang has been able to move forward after the devastating loss of his dad. Hosted on Acast.
