(1969) Nesting at extreme polar latitudes by non-avian dinosaurs Featuring the music of Snale https://snalerock.bandcamp.com/releases Intro: T-Shirts. Outro: Death of a Dream. The Text: This week's text is Version 4.4, spanning from pages 120 - 126. Synopsis: Wu approaches Hammond to discuss restocking the park with Version 4.4. The dinosaurs are too fast, but he thinks he could tweak them so they meet the visitor's expectations, but Hammond isn't listening anymore, and dismisses him. The second of 50 horror movie commentaries, Atom Age Vampire is...a movie, that's for sure. The survivor of a very weird car accident (she loses control of the car, somehow, it goes over the edge of the road and spontaneously bursts on fire) is scarred for life. Enter a doctor/psychiatrist/definitely not an MMA fighter who fixes her through the power of love, err Derma 25. It fails and he must obtain something from female victims (I'm really not sure what, just says "glands" in the plot summary on Wiki), which kills them. Questions are raised, such as what is happening? Wait, what? What is this movie? This movie may have broken me. A stripper is horribly disfigured in a car accident. A brilliant scientist develops a treatment that restores her beauty and falls in love with her. To preserve her appearance the doctor must give her additional treatments using glands taken from murdered women. His unexplained ability to turn into a hideous monster helps with this problem but does nothing to win her love. The doctor's woes multiply as the police and the girl's boyfriend begin to close in on him.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 486 This week we kick off a new running series where we focus on sci-fi movies. Listen as discuss the 1960 Italian feature Atom Age Vampire. The poster is awesome, the trailer is amazing... but does the movie itself hold up as a science fiction classic? And while we realize we’re still just geeks digging through our uncle’s video closet, we also address… FunFlicks, The Orville, Larry Cohen, Veronica Lake, dressed up in a trench coat like she's a spy, Ursula K. Le Guin, she’s clearly wildly in love with this wooden man, I do really like mad scientists, I am always kind of defined by my worst joke, Lethal Weapon, relationship bonding, back when we kept our geekdom in the basement, humor is valuable partly because it allows us to say the things we can't say, suffering against suffering, Rod Serling, there’s a great progressive shot of her face, Star Trek: Discovery, the Los Alamos Isotopes, it's unleashed a primordial malevolence, I’m freaking right the hell out, Hiroshima bottles, your limp body is the only thing that holds these scenes together, Fred Savage, porn addiction, Jigsaw in Punisher, radical therapy that can make you pretty again, I guess culture is ham-handed, a winding road by the sea, Eyes Without a Face, scientific gobbledygook, a cardio encephalograph, just a lot of hugging and rolling, Q: The Winged Serpent, social capital, Looney Tunes dodo dimension, the worst sin that he commits… not as a person but as a movie person, this fabulous high-collared leopard print coat, Godzilla, caught on an alien world humping a statue, Jonathan Frakes, the mute factotum, The Expanse, Hammer Horror, it's long and graven, discussing social issues in art, who the bulk of the suffering is placed upon, there is an escaped gorilla from the zoo that must have done it, Pierre and Jeanette, one makes you pretty again… one turns you into a monster, don't be boring, swanky music, strictly stereotyped, Monique and Sasha, the trenchcoat brigade, we've got all the space... we need to use all this space, Reptilicus, that could become the defining moment of my life, The Stuff, in fact he seems straight-up bored, bursts into flames, film at least until the digital age was not in imperishable medium and glands excretions. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for Atom Age Vampire… so go watch the movie before you listen. “...and he's like ‘Cool... come down to my mysterious lab and let me inject you with things’.”
Scott and Jeff see the new HALLOWEEN movie on opposite sides of the country, but they come together to completely disagree about it. Then it's Compare & Contrast Day, as they watch two different versions of the same mid-century Italian horror film. Jeff sits through the American release, ATOM AGE VAMPIRE, while Scott subjects himself to the complete European cut, entitled SEDDOK, THE HEIR OF SATAN. They learn that sometimes more is less, but less is more confusing.
You listen to the group Honey Cone, described today as early feminists, and they are talking about a universal truth and in memorable pop terms. No hatred of men here, just the emotional recognition that if you don’t love her, she can’t really love you. Love between a man and a woman is a two-way street. (Unlike God’s love for us, which at the center is a one-way street.) If you don’t understand this and are a man, you are in for trouble “Further on Up the Road” (Clapton and the Band, 1978). I learned this from more than one source, which I talk about in the cast; but the main source was Honey Cone. Or rather, they told me it before I could hear it. And now I am telling you. Oh, and I also learned this (crucial) life lesson from “Atom Age Vampire”. “Atom Age Vampire” is one of those brilliant artistic and sadistic Italian horror movies from the early 1960s that if you saw it once, you never forgot it. (If you see it now, you’ll never forget it!) Those movies are stocked with wisdom, communicated mostly in “Grand Guignol” situations of, shall we say, existential urgency. But the wisdom is there. “Atom Age Vampire” teaches us about the nature of real love, trustable love, and faithful love. Versus… well, you’ll see. In short, we love because we are first loved, and then we love back. LUV U!
A mad scientist is hell-bent on making a woman beautiful again after a waffle iron accident leaves her mildly scarred. Tom and Ryan discuss all the ins and outs of this cheesy sci-fi horror flick, such as the ways in which all-engulfing flames can leave minor scars, the things that Billy Idol and this movie have in common, and the many mistreatments of women that can be packed into an hour and twenty minutes. Load up on Derma-28, because it's time to discuss Atom Age Vampire! For years, animator Scott Bateman was best known for his left leaning political cartoons and animations featured on Salon and The Daily Kos. Frustrated by the state of politics, not to mention journalism, Bateman invented Disalmanac, that now spans a blog, Twitter, podcast, and book "Disalmanac: A Compendium of Fact-Like Facts." He also directed his first animated film Atom Age Vampire and a trailer for a Dinosaur Jr's album. In 2014, Bateman had the joy of winning enough money on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to work on his next film. In our conversation, Bateman reveals his tricks of the trade and encourages others tot have fun and give game shows a whirl if you want to find money quickly. Our interview was taped live at the Writers Guild (WGA).
